The most important seven minutes in history

Mar 23, 2007, 06:29 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: 'American Idol', 'Dancing With the Stars', Reality TV, TV Traffic Jam

Mills_l Enough! These two rivaling supershows need to stop acting like children. Big news today: American Idol will intentionally run long on Tuesday night — seven minutes, in fact — just to mess with the elimination edition of Dancing With the Stars. So from 9 to 9:07, no one at home will know what to do! Give whatever contestant slated to sing last the time of day, or sit slack-jawed for seven minutes hoping to catch a closeup of Heather Mills (pictured, with Jonathan Roberts)?

Right now I'm picturing two toddlers in a colorful, plastic sandbox who refuse to share the "huge crowd of unconditionally smiling people" toy. Idol baby has a fun, generic, geometric patterns-okay-corporate-logos-BAD onesie on, whereas Dancing baby looks terrif (swathed in a giant pink ruffle exposing her sexy midsection), but is sadly drowning in a pit of glitter she dug herself. I don't know why Idol toddler is being so selfish with the huge crowd of unconditionally smiling people toy, because his My First Ford pickup is just outside the sandbox, and he hasn't ridden by the video camera in it for like seven minutes. Time is of the essence, Idol toddler! Let's wrap this up!

What do you think about Tokio Hotel? >:)

I love both American Idol and Dancing with the Stars. Nothing interfers with me seeing both programs as I can tape either if I wish. I tape them anyway. Greatest programs ever.

Michael Slezak comments on TV Review were so far fetched. He cut Jordin down to nothing. The girl is beautiful inside out and sings like an angel. Who does he think he is. I hate that he has influence a multitude otherwise. Blake is getting boring, not Jordin.. Same thing over and over. I vote for Melissa as number one and then Jordin. My two picks...actually they are both Number1 for me.

Tuesday evening was,by far, the best Idol show I have ever seen. Hooray for the producers of the show. Keep up the good work.

Diana Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

I think that david should shut his stikin mouth because all he is doing is saying a stupid expression and that is "get a life" well if you are going to do that thne you may not have a life. and you think that if yuo can't have a life then nobody can because nobody has to feel sorry for you david you could life outside cold and alone. Because you DO NOT have a life! You hear me!!!!!!!!

cindy Wed, Apr 25, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

thank god sanjanya went home i thought everyone had hearingaide and the batteries where dead.

idolby Wed, Apr 25, 2007 at 12:19 AM EST

Does ANYBODY else think that the judges are over rating Jordin? It seems as if there is invisible backing behind the judges comments! She is NOT the best singer out there. She screeches her high notes to the point that I have to cover my ears and she breaths into the microphone like she is running a marathon when she sings. Someone teach her breathing technique please! She gasps for air into the mike loud and clear! Why haven't the judges pointed this out? It is annoying with every song and shows she does not have proper training. I just don't see why all the fuss over this girl. Paris was a lot better than Jordin last season, and the judges did not oooh and aaah over her like they do Jordin. They act like Jordin is some kind of god up there and that she can do no wrong! Tonight she screeched through her high notes and yelled out a pretty song. It was the song that is pretty, not Jordin's performance. Yet Randy says that was one of the best performances over 6 seasons? Gag Me!

THANK GOD someone finally stepped up and told Melinda to stop with the PHONEY surprise looks THANK YOU SIMON
it gets a little sickening 3 time a week from her she is a good singer why be so corny she is phoney

Royale with Cheese Sat, Mar 31, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

Well, whoever wrote that last little comment isn't really me. Takes a real man to hide behind someone else's screen name.

Your cowardice is what isn't accessible to most.

"Dicked Up" It means most people are detectives... Get it?

I knew you all would understand once I explained my deep, deep thinking that isn't accessible to most.

James Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

Sanjaya has admitted he isn't the best singer. Despite the negative publicity he has the courage to come out and has become entertaining and doen't take himself seriously. He is a lot of fun to watch his detractors can mute the sound if they like.

ABBEY WHAT DO YOU WATCH THAT IS SO GOOD? IF YOU ARE NOT A TV PERSON THEN DON'T GO ON THIS SITE.

RE: 'get a life' is the most hypocritical and overused phrase here.

Wow, I'm glad to see someone else say that besides me. Like the people saying it AREN'T wasting their time reading and commenting like the rest of us.

I got so worked up over someone telling someone else to "get a life" yesterday that I went into a rant that I think got me banned from posting for the day.

I hate it. It's just stupid. "Get a life" simply because someone has a different opinion? How freaking annoying.

Just goes to show you how dicked up most people are!

Disgusted in Connecticut Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

What a terrible shame - Sanjaya has no talent, cannot sing and is being used to get rid of American Idol. "They" have succeeded. I've watched now since the beginning, but this is it, I won't waste my time watching very talented people being voted off and keeping such a non-talent on.

MYMYMY Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Yall so crazy!! Do you have a life at all to sit and go back and forth on EW.COM. Let me sum things up for you NO Lifes. I love American Idol- but this year is the worst. I have no favorites. Sanjaya really needs to go home. Melinda seems to have the edge. I was pulling for Lakisha - but I don't know now- Kisha seemed to have formed some type of attitude alreaday. Jordan is precious and she is doing great! Haley is a little whorer. Don't mention Kelly Clarkson name ever again. That ungrateful...... and I LOVE SIMON. Without Simon the show will be nothing at all especially this year. NOW!!! Shut the .........UP.

LINDA Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

FIRST OF ALL DANCING WITH THE STARTS HAD TWO HOURS LAST NIGHT. THAT INTERFERED WITH AMERICAN IDOL. ALL THE BIG SHOWS RUN 1-3 OVER SO YOU DON'T WANT TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL, THANK G-D FOR DVR'S, TIVO AND VCR'S. THAT WAY YOU DON'T MISS ANYTHING PEOPLE. DON'T GET SO EXCITED. GET ONE OF THESE DIVCES.

Jeri Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 09:40 PM EST

Oh, did American Idol run over seven minutes? I'd no idea. I was too wrapped up in Dancing With The Stars.

m.Sardo Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

Most of the idol contenders sing better than pros...Diana Ross, Noone, et al. Idol is not a contest for thee best singers, it come down to the best looking, a visual contest..check out the losers,...fat, beards, long stringy greasy hair, and baldies that look like the elf in Lord of the Rings are nada no matter how good they sing.

Janice Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

To Abbey...What's the big deal? You come in here to bash people for their right to say what they want. You did that too. If you don't like the shows, then why are you commenting at all? Is is just to tick the people off that do make comments?

Bekkah Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

To David.....seems the only life you have is telling people to get a life when in fact you come in here to read the comments so therefore.....you need to get a life.

t3hdow Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

David, please shut the hell up. Second to 'jumped the shark', 'get a life' is the most hypocritical and overused phrase here. Quit using it, because it doesn't make you clever and superior over everyone else. It just makes you look more stupid than the people you're trashing.

I don't care for either show myself, but just don't post if all you're going to do is bash the fans.

Royale with Cheese Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

I agree with Ep. TiVo is the greatest invention, and Fox is only going to alienate people with this stunt.

Bit of historical clarification for you guys. Did you know that in the late 70's/early 80's, TBS was the first network to run their shows five minutes late/early?

Granted, there was no TiVo back then, but I think they had the same general idea about hijacking viewing habits. Didn't really work then either...

Ep sato Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

I love that people were all dissing on TIvo and DVRs forever, when it's now clear the impact these are having on TV viewing habits. Thanks to Tivo, I can watch one show and record the other, but if a show starts 7 minutes late will my tivo record it?

Rather than try to fight us consumers with DVRs, the networks need to figure out how to work WITH us. 30Rock, My Boys and Idol all use product placement to get ad revenue now that no one watches ad. Why can't folks be creative like that?

Ending shows (or starting them) five minutes late is MTV's gig and it's irksome how they do that (all my Rob&Big episodes are missing huge chunks at the beginning or end as a result of mtv's policy)...

bootsycolumbia Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 04:55 AM EST

I say go with DWTS and check the internet the next day to see who got booted out of Idol. I hate the Idol results shows. I just want to know who didn't make it. They could wrap it up in 5 minutes. Plus FOX needs a dose of strong medicine. Boycott the results show for a few weeks and I guarantee they'll learn their lesson.

logan Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 01:17 AM EST

I would love to see ABC, NBC and CBS put their high rated shows.. Grey's, Desperate, Hereos, C.S.I.,Lost, Survivor, etc..up against American Idol. Fox is coming off like real idiots with this latest gimmick. The Big 3 networks have all stayed away from A.I., and now just because DWTS did so well, Fox has to throw a little temper tantrum!

Josh Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 07:41 PM EST

Did FOX think of the ramifications of this for people watching the first new episode of HOUSE in weeks?? Where is our love and appreciation??

jen Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

Personally, I love to DVR Idol b/c you can skip through the 35 minutes of TV ads. One singer then cut to commercial, give me a break. Now it just makes 42 minutes of commercial.

Wow Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 06:34 AM EST

People are crabby about this new-fangled reality TV, aren't they???

Snarky Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 02:55 AM EST

Sorry, I'm w/Abbey. I can't believe what the highest rated shows are, while smart, funny, and truly entertaining shows struggle and/or get cancelled.

David Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 08:06 PM EST

I know how to fix the problem for all the viewers.....GET A LIFE!!

Ray Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

It is odd to intentionally run over. But what about this. Last week, there were 11 singers over 120 minutes. This week, we have 10 singers over 67 minutes. Are they going to sing for 30 seconds apiece? When there were 10 guys and 10 girls left in the semis, the show was on for 90 minutes for each. At least be consistent.

JKS Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 01:34 PM EST

Abbey, it's ironic you write about the "dumbing down of America" while misspelling "dilemma", don't you think?

E Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

Seven more minutes of Paula and those untalented losers on Idol cannot be a good thing...although if they shipped Idol shows over to torture prisoners at Abu Ghirab at least it wouldnt be a total waste...

Michy Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

They have done the exact same thing here in the UK, the British version of DWTS, Strictly Come Dancing is run at exactly the same time as Simon Cowell's show X-Factor. Its nothing but petty one-upmanship and yeah, childish!!!!

Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

Right, Abbey, because following a blog on an entertainment magazine is oh-so-intellectual. Fyi, just because a person likes one cheesy thing doesn't mean they like everything like that. Way to generalize.

By the way--bashing a reality show's fans is just as cliche following one. Not caring is the new cool.

Abbey Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 03:40 AM EST

Anyone who watches either or both of these "competitions" deserves this stupid dilema. I guess this is just another example of the "dumbing down of America."

Redeye Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 11:21 PM EST

It is very annoying when this happens. I will be Tivo-ing Idol, and Video-ing Dancing(Yes I still use the VCR along with the Tivo). I set the Tivo for the extra minutes option, and set the VCR for a few minutes extra as well. I watch the shows and fast forward the commercials.

Jasper Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

Oh no they di-in't!! I'm so glad I'm over both shows. Otherwise I'd be hot!

Idol threat Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 09:09 PM EST

I don't really care about either show, but it seems to me that switching over to ABC at 9 might be in order...7 minutes less of Sanjaya sounds OK to me...

jason Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 08:58 PM EST

i was wondering when the sh*t was going to hit the fan. idol is my favorite show, but running over intentionally is a little silly, dont'cha think?

Mary Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Yeah that's pretty awful to do. I will be interested to see if there are any negative effects on the poor person performing last on Idol.

MiaS Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 07:18 PM EST

I hate when shows "run over".

1-They don't run over, they just add more commercials and that just pisses me off.
2-Don't they know that we know they are just being jerks by running over.
3-I also know they are doing it for more ad revenue.
4-Running over screws up my TiVo when I watch a full night of tv.

So, I am fighting back and I urge everyone to join me!
I manually record show so they stop taping at the :00 and :30 and then start the other show!
Yes, I even stop recording Grey's Anatomy on time!
Screw them! I can always catch what I missed on Youtube or similiar or read the recaps here on ew.com

I am tried on this "running over" crap and I am not going to take it anymore!
