Domo arigato! We really are become Viral!

Categories: From Our Staffers, Television, Web/Tech

Last June, EW writer Scott Brown and I teamed up to write a story about trying to become viral video stars. We had an exciting and excellent video ready to unleash on the then-newish YouTube and Google Video worlds (remember how cute it was when they were two different companies?) — and then our lawyers told us to "forget it, Jacks." So we made a second video that was, well, not bad. And then we — or should I say Becca, the mannequin star of our video "Cheater!" — receieved a note yesterday in our/her YouTube inbox:

Hey man, we'd love to show your "Cheater!" video on our show Monday (tomorrow) as part of our "YouTube Star of the Moment" segment. In the segment we show 3 YouTube videos and our audience votes for their favorite. The show is Attack of the Show! and it airs on G4TV at 7pm EST/PST.

Not bad? Not bad? Man, were we wrong! So please vote for us today! Right now! You know, as EW.com managing editor Jay Woodruff just pointed out, looks like there is something to this Long Tail theory after all. Thanks, Chris Anderson!

I actually watched G4's AWFUL "attack of the Show" and voted for you guys just to see you all win! Dude, that has got to be the WORST non show on tv right now. The hostess is cute, but they are in clear desperate need for better writing. With all the nerds who watch G4, aren't there any decent writers among them? Sad sad sad.

Congrats on winning though!

Red State Update was depressing (because everyone in the flyover states is a moron, I get it). Crabtown was poor, it was barely even a movie parody.
Your movie wins hands down. "I'm gonna go blow bubbles in the park with my friends" is inspired.

Here's your competition: one video about red necks reporting the news (that I couldn't even sit through), and one about a crab that steals a guy's wallet. I think you're going to win this one!

Heheee! Scott Brown & Jason Adams the next stars on YouTube? I can totally get behind that!

Scott brown is amazing, so naturally I'm supporting him. Go scott!

I'm going with Fat-one. I mean, he was on Broadway.

Scott Brown is a favorite so I voted for ya'll and I'll pimp this out to my friends. Good luck to you both!!

I mean, I'd LOVE to get behind you guys and all (I especially love Scott Brown's writing...come back to Popwatch!), but this video is just not that funny. The punchline (and only really funny part) comes toward the very end, and by then I've already stopped paying attention.
To be honest, the most compelling thing about the video are the freakishly skinny kitchen cabinets in the background.

So, who reads Becca's Myspace email? Scott Brown and Jason Adams? Totally awesome, as them two are among my fave EW writers. It also explains the "rift" between becca and Scotty B.

And the video was good, but nothing beats the Chinese guys who sing "I want it that way", or the star wars fanboy who was so funny that even Arrested Development did a parody...
