Arcade Fire backlash contest: We have a winner!

Well, I set up a contest to see who could find the best Arcade Fire backlash out there, and intended to let it run for the whole day, but I'm calling this one early, kids, because someone just blew the doors off the joint:

While I enjoyed several of the comments on the board suggested by Michelle ("That's precisely what I think of the arcade fire. I think of a mountain-sized pile of sh-- and a single violin sticking up from it."), agree with Brad in Edmonton and John Kramer that playlouder.com's review is probably the worst out there (”pretty f---ing poor even if by only their own lofty standards.”), and applaud Jen O. loudly for coining "meta-backlashing," today's award can only go to this:

Not exactly backlash, but so pitch-perfect I couldn't not. So now here's the question: Do I give the prize to commenter Lewis, who posted the link to that brilliance ("Can we interest you in some Kenny Chesney tickets?"), or should I track down director Jonathan Emmerling and give it to him? Does it help if you know that the prize is a choice between a Prison Break hat or a Dokken CD/DVD set?

And for the record, of course, I am personally loving Neon Bible as much now as I did the first time through, and still can't stop listening to "Intervention" over and over and over. My only complaint is the amount of time it took me to get the CD out of the fancy cardboard sleeve: approximately two minutes, after which I took it out to the hall and got a co-worker to help me. So, you know. That sucked. In fact, I hate this band now. ARCRAP FIRE!

you hear a lot about florence regarding the renaissance
but the university of bologna was equally,if not more, important

RE: anonymous indie hater hater
Isn't it even more self-important to believe that this post refers to you specifically?

I wasn't on board with the video until the line "They've lit an Arcade Fire in my soul." They earned their Dokken CD/DVD set with that line.

How can I be a part of a backlash for a band I've never heard of? This seems a bit self-important of you, Whitney.

So, Whitney, you don't have anything better to do than set up a hate-on for an indie band? This is pathetic.

Lame, that was like a wanna be Woody Allen movie. Except it wasn't funny and had stolen jokes. The "Chuck eventually gets a ticket" joke was directly lifted from Kevin Smith's Mallrats (when the fat guy acknowledges the epilogue writing that says he will "eventually see the magic eye") Bad choice for this one being the winner.

Late submission:
Someone by the user name "Guy Mann-Dude" had this to say about Arcade Fire's appearance on SNL. I had to clean it up a bit.

"Arcade Fire sounded like a bunch of pretentious, ball-[#*@%ing] wankers."

That's pretty harsh! Below is the url for original posting. sorry it's not hyper-linked.

That was hilarious!

spackle Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 06:21 PM EST

Agreed...not that funny...and in no way is it Backlash.

What were you thinking?

Amanda Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 06:14 PM EST

Ditto to what everyone else said, not even close to a backlash.... It's not even indie rock-specific except for the brooklynvegan comment thing.

Peter Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 05:51 PM EST

How is this Backlash?

Its just a knock on the obsession of Indie rock fans.

Doesn't really make any sense why you chose it.

Mich Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

Great stuff. I say give Lewis the gear, and do a little blurb on the video and director for the print mag.

Eli Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Love it... the hedge fund guys LOST INTEREST. I was that guy who waited forever to get in, and when I did, I finally said... this is it... very uninspired, I have been backlashing ever since, and this film caught the essential unimportance of it all.

Ang Knee Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

This is very cute and funny, but how is it "backlash" against the band? It's a gentle satire on indie-darling fandom. What am I missing?

Steve Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

That was awful. It was like a rejected mad tv sketch done by self righteous indie kids. Blech.

Also, it doesn't really fit the criteria. It's not so much a backlash as it is a failed satire on the bands rabid fanbase.

So you lose twice. Go away forever.

Gary Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

Only Pam and her publicist knew of the final stunt....everyone else was caught off guard. And the "hooker" that Borat meets is an actress, but the reactions at the dinner party ARE real. 85% of the footage in Borat is real. And even though it may lose a LITTLE on repeat viewings its remains a classic
