Is this season of 'Idol' the worst ever?

Mar 15, 2007, 04:41 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: 'American Idol'

Idol_l Or were we just spoiled by season 5? Hard to say. Lots of buzz around here (and when I say "buzz around here" it usually means "Slezak and I are IM-ing") that people are just not havin' it with Idol this time around. It's clear on the message boards too — as the appropriately named reader Bored2Death pointed out this morning, "this is the weakest AI ever!!!! There is talent up there on the stage but NOTHING like in seasons past." Four exclamation points indicates that Bored2Death means BUSINESS.

Now, I am by no means an Idol-through-the-years expert, but I am completely underwhelmed by this season. So what's to blame? Song selection? Randy's vocab? Commercialism (pictured) at all costs? Haley's uncanny ability to remind us of the Lunesta butterfly? Will you be patient or ride it out or (gasp! but it might be okay, try it!) quit watching altogether? Which past seasons were your favorites and which did you find utterly ghaaaastly? Whoa, that was eight questions in a row. Do I really need to know all the answers right now?! Yes!

To Royal With Cheese Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

What is with your Gay Obsession? You could have said all that in one post.

Poor Sanjaya, he probably gets teased by blockeads all the time.

Jar jar binx Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 09:46 PM EST

Season four is by far the best Amercan Idol ever!Carrie Underwood is a fantastic singer and she deserved to win that 100%!I loved season four it was the best!Last year was alright my favorite was Kellie Pickler. This season overall sucks.I can't even bring myself to watch it.

idollove Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 09:30 PM EST

shame, shame, shame.. shame on you! All of you who vote the worst should be ashamed. While you vote the worst some of the best, who have worked their boodies off are being voted off. shame on you :(

Nancy Walker Sat, Mar 17, 2007 at 11:44 PM EST

Clay Aiken
Ruben Studdard
Aimie Adams
Ricky Smith
Latoya London
Jennifer Hudson
The worst: Camille Velasco, Makalah Gordon, John Stevens, And Keith from Atlanta. I know, he was not part of the top twelve, but was worth a mention.

sarah Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

i think last year was way better then this year. their are a few people who shouldn't be on the show

J.Me Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

Seaon 6 is by far better than last year, when no one on the show had any sense of humor (Chris Daughtry) or personality (except Kellie Pickler, who wasn't the greatest singer, but entertaining nontheless). I already feel 6 is better, and I am just waitng for the shocking elimination when LaKisha or Melinda is sent home prematurely.

Stephanie Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

I think that this year there were some really good singers like Tami, Ebony, and Sundance. However, to Have an actual contest where all of the singers are on key would not be American Idol would it?

Stephanie Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

Is it just me or does Chris Sligh look like the love child of Flo from the 60's band The Turtles?

jason Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

bill, i totall disagree with you about last season. watch katharine and elliott at their first auditions, then watch their final performances. you didn't see growth for those two? wow. i think they became quite the "idols" throughout those weeks. but that's just MHO.

*lauren* Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

If you are not an R&B fan (like me) this is not a season for you. I loved last season because all the genres were represented. This season the girls (except for Gina) are all going after the same sound. I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that some of the boys will get better, and make this interesting.

Joe C Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 09:47 AM EST

The problem is, this is the 6th season, and so repetition is taking it's toll. From Randy always saying 'yo dawg' to Paula's incoherent babbling to Simon and Ryan's tired verbal sparring, we've heard this before. It will get worse not better regardless of the quality of the singers.

DR Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 09:17 AM EST

This is certainly an underwhelming season, to say the least. As someone else pointed out, AJ and Gina are both recurring auditioners. Kinda makes you go "hmmmm". Last season was the spoiler for me. Great Top 10. This is reminding me of Season 3, where there were a few good belters (J Hud, LaToya, and Fantasia) who were so far beyond everyone else it was just dull. I agree with a few of the posters who say that AI ought to go on hiatus. Give us a break for about a year, tighten up the audition process, and try to pick decent singers instead of "cute but mediocre" singers. And stop the theme nights, make the audition songs relevant, and just make the show overall more exciting. So much time was spoent on crappy wannabes this season that Hollywood was what, 1 hour, then we went to the top 24? Not enough time to invest myself in good singers. Hiatus, retool, and come back.

Auriana Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

I thought Season 3 was the worst. No one I wanted to win and I couldn't stand any of the final 4. Last season was definately the best. This season is proving to be a little boring but at least there's a couple (Gina and Chris Sligh) that I have some vested interest in.

Chili Dog Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 08:29 AM EST

Not the worst. They have all been pretty bad at this point because the judges go for style over substance and they have cut some fine singers who aren't so fine to look at and kept some that can't sing because the have a "look." Case in point, SANJI.
What a Loser. Kiki is an exception only kept because she is so damn good.

johnnyD Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 08:19 AM EST

I spend the fall waiting for TV to become fun again in March (forget the shows before the top 24). This is not fun, people.
Melinda is great, but no one wants "office secretary" idol. As past seasons have shown, Lakisha will suffer the "no personality" ouster. I long for Blake to be as good as he thinks he is.
Tuesday was total amateur night.
Last year spoiled us.

mike Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 07:53 AM EST

i thought season 4, besides bo bice and the robot carrie underwood, was pretty bad. and although season 5 had a lot of great characters let's not forget that bucky covington, kevin covais, melissa mcghee and kelli pickler were all in the top 12 and none of them were that great.

Tim Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 07:48 AM EST

A bad season was bound to happen eventually.

I agree: some better singers were eliminated early. I hope some of them are invited back during a wildcard night, if there is a wildcard night.

There's only one judge's opinion that counts: Simon. Randy's 'dawg' and 'yo' lines are old and stale. Paula would make positive comments if Hitler or Saddam were performing.

And get rid of Seacrest!!

And AI producers, if you read this: quit focusing on your favorite contestants. It's pretty obvious you have your fave and give her (oops, ;) ) more camera time than others.

Bill Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 07:44 AM EST

Even though I still enjoy AI, I agree that it has gotten boring. I think in earlier seasons, the contestants really wanted to WIN, not just "get exposure" and then sneer at the show. I think that's why people are connecting with Melinda - she seems so stoked to be there, you want to root for her.

Also, the contestants come in more polished, so we don't get to watch them develop as performers week to week. In Season 2, it was fun to watch Kim Locke bloom from her crappy week 1 "Heat Wave" into a serious contender for the top spot. I think that's missing lately. The singers suck or they don't, but they don't really develop week to week. Last season's Top 5 didn't change much from week one to the week they left. That's boring.

Maeve Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 07:35 AM EST

I'm with some of the other posters here who blame the judges. I feel like Tami Gosnell, Baylie Brown and Jori Steinberg were eliminated way too early. And there had to have been more talented people than Hailey, Sanjaya and Antonella!
Worst season ever.

andyM Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 07:04 AM EST

I definitely think this is a really blah season, resembling season 3. I never got the whole Fantasia thing, she was screechy and the only thing holding her up was her personality (though annoying to me)and backstory. I agree with the majority that Melinda this year is impecable, while Lakisha is a competent singer, but devoided of a compelling personality. I also like Jordin bubbly and sweet stage presence. Still, last season was truly incredible and I even miss Taylor "drunk uncle in a wedding" antics. Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice and Elliot Yamin are in my opinion the most talented male contestants ever, with Carrie, J.Hud, and Kelly C being the most talented females. I blame the producers and judges for this year's debacle, I wonder why they didn't let Tami Gosnel through, there's a contestant with a classic rock flavour! And Bailey Brown? I know she botched her lyrics in Hollywood week, but so did Antonella. And I'm sure there has to be some other talented contestants we didn't even see

beb Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 06:50 AM EST

They need to get rid of these theme nights - it really doesn't allow the audience to see the "package" they're supposed to fall in love with and shell out money for.

Alex Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 04:36 AM EST

BTW, Stephanie and Blake are my dark horse picks.

Alex Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 04:35 AM EST

Honestly, and point it out if I'm wrong. But during this part of the season there are always a few articles talking about how bad it was compared to the seasons before it.

I have been an EW reader since season 2 and I can remember from that point foward this argument comes around again and again.

As soon as either Lakisha or Melinda gets voted off early, which will happen.

People will start the buzz!!!!!! thats five !'s how bout that?

sam Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 04:11 AM EST

With the exception of Melinda,Lakisha, and Jordin I call this season cringefest. Last year and season 2 were the most entertaining.

MikeknaJ Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 02:35 AM EST

I bet the producers are kicking themselves now for picking Antonella over Marissa Rhodes, as the last girl to make the Final 24. Their strategy of picking not only for talent but for entertaining TV seems to be backfiring this season more than usual.

Kiki Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 12:11 AM EST

Down with the judges!!! Pick better talent! And this year they only got a few right, but they are in the same genre. Definitely the worst season. I mean really Sanjaya, Sanjaya! and what's her name.

Redeye Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 11:40 PM EST

They should have brought back the "wild card" with AJ, Nik and Sabrina. They were all really good, and it would have made this a much more enjoyable competition.

C-LOS Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

Season 3 was my favorite. It had Fantasia, LaToya London, and JHud. It was very interesting to watch but I wish that LaToya or JHud would've won. Season 5 did have the best final five though: Paris, Daughtry, Yamin, Katherine, and Taylor.

Jonathan Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 11:15 PM EST

yes, thank you Sally! Kelly has the whole package (still does really). Amazing vocal talent, huge personality, and fantastic performing skills. Watch those links i posted below and you'll see what Sally and me are talkin' about! thats what this season needs!

Monee Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 11:08 PM EST

i've watched every season except this one so far and i loved the first one. it had a more "pop" feel, not "we're trying to be different" feel. they were all pop singers and that's what the show is about. i loved carrie in season 4, season 3 was horrible. season 2 was competitive but there wasn't any chemistry between the contestants. i'm sorry, but while season 5 was "diverse" it completely ruined AI. all of these "serious musicians" (like chris) sucked all the fun out of it. they took it too seriously. i know america is in love with Chris Daughtry right now, but in a few months, when the new Kelly Clarkson album hits stores, everyone will remember why the original season was the only season that gave us what AI is supposed to give us: a POP SUPERSTAR.

Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

No one is really that good. They are so underwhelming it's sad. We need strong voices, even Lakisha, she sounds good because the rest are not that good. But shes not the best of the best. Againist Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, maybe even Kimberly Locke and Fantasia, she wouldn't hold a candle to star power or likeability.

jeff Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 10:30 PM EST

i used to love the show. now i just tivo it and wait till the end. they have lost my atteneion.

Vance Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 10:29 PM EST

Actually, see AJ Wrights list below. Very comprehensive. Totally right. S6 is not the best season, (that would be 1 (cause of Kelly) or 5 (cause of the unpredictability despite Taylor winning) for me but there are ALWAYS LOTS OF BAD SINGERS in the top 12. ALWAYS.

Vance Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 10:26 PM EST

Totally agree. Season 3 was the WORST. Oh wait. season 4 was worst but I dropped it at that point. I can't believe people are saying this is the worst year when its not even CLOSE. remember AJ or anybody but Kelly in S1? Everybody in S2? Sorry, as fun as it was to see the war between Claymates and Rubennites, they both sucked. S3 was AWFUL. HATED Fantasia. Loved JHud but she was booted out so who cared. S5 was GREAT again so maybe S6 looks bad in comparison but only because there IS a clear frontrunner when last year there really wasn't (except maybe Daughtry but again, kicked out). Still, compare even Haley to half the people in S1-4 and even she's better than most. Okay. Sanjaya sucks, but so did Rickey Smith, Nikki McKibbin, Julie Demato,Charles Grisby, Anthony Federov etc etc.

cidigi Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 10:23 PM EST

Yeh, it's a weak season alright. But it's turned out to be a popularity contest more than a singing one.
John Stevens ring a bell? Really!
And these other sites-votefortheworst.com-which are getting
people to vote in reverse to really
mess things up!
I think voting has to be changed. You vote for the person you want off and only once. Once, not 582 times like
in the past.
I feel for the judges....tho it makes for a good show..for some people.
I watched a little on Tuesday and
maybe other time in May.....

Huh? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 09:59 PM EST

Vivi--Do you own a television or are you joking? Does the name Jennifer Hudson ring a bell?

Vivi Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 09:30 PM EST

I won't say that this season is the worst (that prize goes to Season 3 for I do not remember ONE single contestant other than the winner, Fantasia), but it's pretty damn close to getting there. It is so freakin' underwhelming. You know it's bad when you have only one audition episode (w/ Eccentric Panther...best audition ever!!!) and episodes of Season 5 on your TIVO for American Idol.
Don't get me wrong, Melinda is by FAR the best one there but then who's next. She's pwning these poor people. Lakisha is blah to me. Jordin has some spunk but then what? Gina? Um, no. Haley? Why is she there again? Stephanie needs to step her charisma/personality game up badly. The boys just suck. End of the story.
Compare this to the brilliance that was Season 5 and you wonder, "What the hell happened? What were the judges smoking?". Strange.

MOI Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 09:22 PM EST

Hey!!!! Is anybody listening? The only thing that would liven up AI at this point is to start bringing in the 'wild card'. That will liven things up.
Too easy.... but if it's boredom you want, then whatever...

deb Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

that's an ugly attitude you have allie

peglegmonkey Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

I must say, season 4 was very entertaining and had a good variety of genres represented by the singers. You had perhaps the single most entertaining contestant ever in Constantine, the original rocker in Bo, Nadia's weird faces while she sang, Nikko's smooth R&B, Carrie's general excellence and her country vibe, the bubbly and talented Vonzell, and the polarizing Scott Savol. Great season, great talent. However, the top five in season 5 were unbelievably good: Paris, Daughtry, Yamin, Katherine, and Taylor. Wow!

Ugly Allie Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

Oh, and I'm starting to get sick of LaKisha and Melinda. Okay, we get that they're good, blah, blah, blah. I predict some Kiki and Mindy backlash to start in a few weeks.

Ugly Allie Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:58 PM EST

I thought season 3 had a horrible lack of talent, and this season appears to be another season 3. Maybe Idol has a slump every 3 seasons. Or maybe we're just running out of unknown singers who want to audition.
I'll keep watching, but that doesn't mean I have any sort of emotional attachment to any of the contestants like I've had in previous years

deb Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:48 PM EST

yeah...there's a few more terrible singers than usual..... but melinda and lakisha make it worth watching. they'll both records a big record coming out of this. jordin is cute too. and blake and chris are good eye candy. lighten up people...what else is there to do on a tuesday or wednesday night?

Ashley Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:47 PM EST

I still think season two was by far the most tallented season of the show thus far. Season one was kind of a joke in my opinion-- Kelly stood out by a mile. I didn't really watch seasons 3 and 4 because the tallent pool was no where near the quality of season 2. while 5 was pretty good, this season isn't really up there with 2 or 5.

Jojo Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:39 PM EST

I don't know if this season is any worse. I do know that the formula is getting old and the talent pool is getting thinner. (Exhibit A: Gina Glocksen--reject for several seasons, suddenly a good singer? Nope, she still sucks.) My recommendation which Fox would NEVER EVER DO: Take AI on hiatus. No AI next season. Build up the anticipation, build up the talent pool again, make people miss you, then come back, bigger and better. In addition, cut back on the dumb audition shows to only the truly funny or exceptionally weird so we don't get burned out before the real talent even starts to sing. Give more air time to talented people during the auditions. We really do want to see them. And while you're at it, get me some more eye candy. (Ok, the last one isn't imperative, but I can ask.)

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:35 PM EST

Awwwww, I kinda liked Bucky......he was cute.

Sally Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:23 PM EST

To Jonathan: "this season needs a Kelly Clarkson. Someone with some truly awesome on-stage charisma while they perform." Looking back at those performances, she was/is the consummate performer isn't she? Personality, fun, sings on pitch. You're right, we need more of that on Idol. If you have at least 5 or 6 really good/great singers it creates more suspense and controversy as they get voted off. Plus the contestants have to bond with the audience, and the audience doesn't seem to bonding this year do they?

AJ Wright Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

OH and BUCKY?!!

AJ Wright Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

Okay, here is a list to remind us that NO this is not the worst -- but consistent with past years.

Ejay Day
Jim Verraros
AJ Gil
Nikki McKibbin
Vanessa Olivarez
Charles Grisby
JULIA DEMATO
Corey Clark
CARMEN RASMUSEN!!
Leah Labelle
Matthew Rogers
Camille Velasco!!
Jon Peter Lewis
JOHN F-ING STEVENS!!!
Jasmine Trias
Lindsay Cardinale
Mikalah Gordon
Scott Saval
Melissa McGhee
Kevin Covais
Lisa Tucker
Kellie Pickler

There you go -- there has been LOTS AND LOTS of *underwhelming* performers in the past!!

Just remember, Melinda is one of the best Idol has EVER had!

empressoedt Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

Q: Which past seasons were your favorites?
A: The one on CBS this past summer where Dilanadrama came in second to The Lemur King.

Aaron Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

I, for one, blame the judges. They selected a really weak, uninteresting Top 24. (Granted, I'm sure the producers had a lot to do with it, too.) I also blame the boys vs. girls system which I hated when they started it in season 4 and am glad that it has finally backfired. I also blame Randy, whose comments have become not only useless, but actually bring the "quality" of the show down by whole letter grade.

I think, overall, season 5 was the best season, though season 3 had some of the best individual performances ever.

MOI Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:37 PM EST

They need to bring in the 'wild card'.

TJ Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

The audition process ruined this season. Instead of showing us some talented artists, we see some ass in a banana suit. What happened to Tami Gosnell? She was amazing! The judges picked people they thought the audience would like, and it turns out we hate most of them.

So both the judges and producers get the blame for giving a crap product.

Nathan Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:19 PM EST

YES! YES! YES! THE WORST BY FAR!!!!!!!!

Chris Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:17 PM EST

I think the producers put WAY TOO MANY "funny people" in front of the judges for the begining episodes, and not enough of the truly talented people get in front of them.

You just can't tell me that out of 10,000 people in 10 cities, that these are the most talented. There was more talent in my high school! The Big Bird lady wasted the time of someone who might be interesting to watch.

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

In my opinion, Sanjaya's voice isn't all that bad. He's more in tune than Chris R for sure. There's just no depth to any of the guy's voices, no modulation, no character, no "YO" to quote Randy, God help me!

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

I think Blake is cocky, but in a likeable way. Too bad his voice isn't stronger, cuz he sure brings a unique aspect to AI. The rest of the guys are atrociously underwhelming.

Big Momma Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

I sure hope they do something about that poor kid. I get so embararred (for him) when he starts to sing that I change the channel.

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

BrianK, the fact is the effect of VFTW can't be discounted. They're the reason Hicks won last season, and look how long they kept Antonella alive this season, They'll do the sane with Sanjaya unless the producers exercise their perogative to override the vote tally.

Big Momma Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

I even miss Ace (sigh) and Bucky. At least they had some personality and were not smug (BLAKE).

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:06 PM EST

Whassup, Big Momma? I miss Elliott and Chris D!

Big Momma Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:05 PM EST

Well, look at Chris D and Jennifer D.
Maybe just the exposure that AI provides is enough to give truly talented people a break.

Hi D :)

Brian K Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

This season is terrible, and I think the quota system has a lot to do with it. None of the guys is great, and AI is just obviously pimping Richardson just because he's cute and commercial-looking. For me, the show jumped the shark when Daughtry got kicked off. I have very little confidence that either Melinda or Lakisha will actually win this thing. But then again, if there's anything we learned from the last two presidential elections, many Americans just can't be trusted with a vote!

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

I think AI peaked last season. There will never be another pool of talent like Daughtry, Elliott, Mandisa, Paris and Katharine. Pickler was amusing, Kevin was endearing if geeky, Ace was eye candy, Bucky was lucky........so many to choose from, not like this season where there are only two worth tuning in for. The judges have only themselves to blame....they made the choices.

Big Momma Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

brandonk, wait until it is down to the final two(I predict Melinda and Lakisha)and then watch. I think you will find them both very talented.

brandonk Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

I started watching with Season 2, but I haven't really watched this year. I've seen a few episodes cuz my partner watches it, but it's definitely not on my list of "must-sees". I've seen enough to agree that it's a pretty weak field, though.

Amy A Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:49 PM EST

I agree, WORST SEASON EVER! I couldn't finish watching the last episode. I don't care for any of the contestants. Every other year I could pick out and root for a favorite. Not this year.

Big Momma Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:42 PM EST

Have to agree with Amber.I thoughtseason 5 was the best by far. Yamin, Daughtry, Mandisa, even McPhee were a pleasure to watch each week. I never thought Taylor was agreat singer, but I always got a huge laugh when he was perfoming. This season I only look forward to Melinda and Lakisha and with all due respect I think all of the guys s..k. There is not one that I find amusing or remotely talented. Just my opinion.

Amber Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:36 PM EST

Totally spoiled by season 5. I can't remember getting excited by season 3. Sickenly sweet Diana Degarmo got second place? And don't get me started on the atrocity that was third place finnisher Jasmine Trias. Good seasons come in waves, we just have to ride this one out.

mustangDC Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

Ok...why are people really saying how wonderful last year was. The diversity of the type of singers was nice, but are you really saying Bucky, Kellie, Ace had great voices. Um..NO!! Katherine McPhee was pretty but she has a very limited range. Taylor Hicks is by far the most horrid selection as an American Idol. He was a fun underdog to vote for, but a small percentage of his "soul patrol" are actually buying his album. Elliot Yamin has the best male voice on Idol out of all seasons, but people are not running out there to buy his single either. Which is sad, because it is really good. Again, I am just not seeing why people are saying last year was an amazing group of 12 and that they were very superior. Lakisha and Melinda are much better singers then anyone from last year, and Blake is probably the most original male singer Idol has ever seen. Season 4 was probably the most fun when it came to good diversity. Country, Rock, and R&B in the final 3. Just my opinion.

nathan Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

It's been a really really boring season, and in response to simon cowell saying he's bigger than Springsteen, yeah, no.

Eli Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

well, if you pit the singing talents of the males this season against the worst singer on AI ever -- i.e. Scott Savol. Scott Savol would still win. That's how bad the men are.

Ep Sato Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

A little OT, but does anyone else dig that picture? I think it looks kinda fly.

Karla Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:48 PM EST

If this were a game of poker, I'd ask for an entirely new hand. Okay, I'd keep the two queens.

Think of all the people who got cut in Hollywood Week. Yow - the judges really screwed up this year. There are some groaners and howlers on that stage.

Any fool could have pulled Lakisha and Melinda out of the group, but it takes a special kind of fool to choose Sundance and Antonella over the people who were with them on that final day.

Ouch, I want a recount, and a rewind, and all new cards (except the queens).

Banana Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:45 PM EST

Season 3 was the weakest overall except for JHud but even though you couldn't have predicted her success. The group numbers were only good in Season 1 and have been pathetic ever since. Hello fast forward!

Season 5 with Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee, Elliot Yamin, Paris Bennett and Mandisa could of won any other year. That's how strong the talent was last year. Plus the bubbly personality of Kellie Pickler. The unbearable dances of Taylor Hicks. The watching of a star be born with McPhee and Daughtry. It was the most entertaining season ever and makes all others look disapointing in it's path.

To me this season is very disappointing. Season’s 4 and 5 were fairly strong, but this one so far has been a dud. I partly blame the producers and the judges for putting through such weak male contestants, but also for not finding any variety with the female contestants. It’s their fault were stuck with Sanjaya now. They’re the ones who put him through. This season is unfolding just like season 3, which was my least favorite season, and with my busier than usual life right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if I tune out at some point.

sweet Lord FORGIVE ME!! i have sinned. um yeah, season 3 had jennifer hudson and i did not mention her! i will now go stick my head in acid and listen to william hung

ER Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

The blame is with the 24 that came out of Hollywood week. The judges really should have picked them better. I find it really hard to believe those were the best. Except Lakisha and a few others the 24 sucked. Some good people disappeared! Antonette! How the hell did she get through?

K Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

I'd just like to know who the hell keeps voting for Sanjaya. The deaf?

Royale with Cheese Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Fair enough, t3hdow. I recently just started watch television again - reality shows ran me off. So I'm not as familiar with CSI, Law & Order, and it's various off-shoots as most probably are. I got in on the ground floor with Criminal Minds, and I just stuck with it. I haven't watched the others to compare. I watched Lost from the beginning, but it just got brutal this season. I couldn't justify that hour of my life. I might take your advice and check it out again if it has improved.

Either way, I would take either over American Idol...

jason Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

other people have said it : every season only has like 4 great singers. i just think the problem this year (well not MY problem) is only one of the guys is a great performer, and there are no REAL rockers and no country singers. the bulk of the talent are r&b girls. in my opinion, i would by a CD by at least four of the finalists, just like last year (elliott, kat, chris and paris). it is not the worst, trust me (season 3 anyone? only fantasia was great)

Joes Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

This season is SO BORING! Melinda is by far the greatest singer here...so its like "please, lets have the finale already...Melinda Vs. Lakisha and see what happens!" All the guys suck...i especially dont like chris richardson and blake, someone needs to bring them down their hubris cloud!

Jonathan Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

this season needs a Kelly Clarkson. Someone with some truly awesome on-stage charisma while they perform. Someone that gets the crowd to go manic with their presence.

check these out to see what i mean:

I have to side with those who are bored to tears this season. I feel no real connection with any of the contestants and the two frontrunners (Melinda and Lakisha) are great singers, but just have no personality. Last season had so much going on and so many different types of singers. The only person this season that seems marketable and to have a nice amount of charisma is Jordin Sparks.

I like Season 6 Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

The best season of AI has to be Season 3, when the 3 divas were on: Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson & LaToya. Although some people criticize this season, I think it is great. I stopped watching AI after season 3 but returned to watching it after seeing LaKisha, Melinda, and Stephanie perform. It brings back Season 3 memories.

By the way, are people criticizing this season because all the talented singers are black? Just wondering.

tnygrl Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

It seems like people this season are more invested in the singers who DIDN'T make the top 24 than those who did. I, as a rule, don't usually trust the voting public (Um...Sanjaya? Haley? Need I say more?) So I rely on the judges to put forth a good platter from which to feast. But instead of a gourmet meal, we got ritz crackers and cheese in a can. It makes us wonder about a different menu. And it makes for a truly unappealing season (even though I'm a total Melinda fan).

t3hdow Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

to Royale:

Criminal Minds is nothing more than a poor man's version of Law and Order: SVU. Maybe I'm just biased because I'm getting tired of all these serialized dramas in CBS, but at least SVU offers more compelling storylines and better characters in comparison. I'd rather invest my time in Lost, which has improved lately since its return (almost to season 1 quality). Criminal Minds doesn't even distinguish itself beyond the eight or so other serialized dramas on CBS, but I suppose if that's all what their viewers want, then more power to you.

Fumi Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

the state of this idol's seasom is definitely the fault of the judges and producers... there were many more talented people who auditioned and did not get through

Jason Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:47 PM EST

What happened to Ebony? the waitress on skates who reminded us of a young whitney houston. She was someone who could rival Kisha and Mindy Doo for the top spot with a different sound.

Lucy Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:46 PM EST

While flipping on Sunday, I happened across "American Idol Rewind". Yikes. I'm willing to cut them some slack because it was the first season, but if we just compare the singers, this season doesn't look so bad after all.

karl Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

I think this is definitely the worst Idol ever. The men are all either bad or at best average and there are only two standouts on the women's side.

I think that the judges and selection process are to blame for this.

BoredToTears Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:44 PM EST

This is definitely a snoozer. Melissa and Lakisha are both great singers, but they still have nothing that would want me to go see them perform in person. Blake has a bit a pizzaz in his style, but I don't think I could really stand a full length concert of his. This is really a waste of time. Thank goodness for Tivo. I can get through the two hours of torture in about half an hour.

WDB Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

I feel like it's unfair to compare this year to Season 5. Chris and Taylor were seasoned veterans, so their performances shouldn't be a litmus test for current Idol wannabes. We have to remember that the show is about DISCOVERING talent--which should allow America to discover someone good and watch them become great. And for my money, I am rooting for Chris Richardson and Jordin Sparks, because they have energy, excitement, and they try something new each week. Melinda and Lakisha are good, but so are real pop stars. I want to watch someone grow into their talent, like Kelly did. We rooted for her because of the transformation, not because she began as an amazing performer.

Larry Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

It's not that this season is really any worse, it's just more of the same again. Of course Sanjaya and Haley are going to stick around and pick off some of the more talented ones. It happens every year--Nikki McKibbin, Josh Gracin, Jasmine Trias, John Stevens, Scott Savol, Kevin Covais, Bucky Covington sound familiar? The themes are ridiculous (Diana Ross? Gloria Estefan? Inspirational Songs?) and the judges will say one thing one week and completely change their tune the next.
Ryan and Simon have their ridiculous banter, everyone boos Simon, it's just getting boring.

It's time to shake the show up a bit, IMHO. Some of the talent this year is exceptional. But some of it is clearly not. And while the manufactured drama of the show is part of its "charm" it's all starting to wear a bit thin for me.

Tim Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

Doolitle and LaKeisha are so much better than the other two that it's like watching paint dry as we wonder which of this "minor league" singers will be picked off first.

Lindsay Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

Continuing...
Ace Young vs. Chris Richardson - Ace wins, because he's prettier and because that George Michael performance week one was so much better than anything Chris has ever or could ever sing (if only Ace had continued to shine...).
Bucky vs. Phil - Phil wins. Even if he was in the bottom three, his voice soars and he has the added advantage of not being named after a Beaver.
Mandisa vs. Stephanie - some might say a Mandisa-Lakisha comparison is more apt, but Lakisha is going to place in the top two so that's not a fair match. In this one, I'd say Mandisa takes it. Her "I'm Every Woman" had more charisma than Stephanie could ever summon.
Lisa Tucker vs. Gina Glockson - Gina wins. She may be screetchy but, as Simon might say, Lisa is 100 packets of sugar in your coffee when you only want 1. She gives you cavities.
Kevin vs. Sanjaya - Draw. Both are silly and useless. But Sanjaya does have better hair.
Melissa vs. Brandon - Who?
Final vote: 5-4 for Season 6!!!

John V Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:35 PM EST

This has to be the most disappointing season to date. The judges did a lousy job in picking the people that they brought to Holy wood in my opinion and now they are wondering why these kids can't produce. Get it over with ASAP

JenJen Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

I do think that there are probably a lot of talented people who didn't make the cut this year, in favor of people that were more "commercial". I have to admit though, that even in the best of years the Top 12 isn't always made up of amazing vocal talents. Last year brought us Kevin, Bucky, and Kellie Pickler.

And I have to give the participants a little bit of a break, since we are all comparing them to current artists, who we mostly hear on CDs that took months to put together. All their mistakes are edited out. These people are singing LIVE, and even the most talented of performers is going to hit a bum note every once and a while, especially when they haven't had years of professional experience.

Paul U. Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

I haven't seen all of 'em sing, so I can't speak for their talent...but with a couple of exceptions (Blake!) they are the funniest looking bunch of people ever assembled on one stage. I did see Melinda Doolitle the other night and she gave me goosebumps, but she looks a little strange. It's a motley crew, to be sure.
