On the Scene: Alexa Ray Joel at the Mercury Lounge in NYC

Mar 1, 2007, 04:01 PM | by Leah Greenblatt

Categories: Music

Arj_l Dozens of promising unsigned musicians perform at New York's Mercury Lounge every year — but very few precede their shows with a dinner at a pricey downtown boite for some 20 guests, many of them boldface names. Then again, very few are the sole offspring of two '80s superstars: Piano Man Billy Joel and his onetime Uptown Girl, model Christie Brinkley. At the downtown bistro Schillers, Alexa Ray Joel, a slim, brown-haired 21-year-old with her mom's cheekbones and her dad's large, downturned eyes, welcomed a group that included novelist Jay McInerney, fashion designer Nicole Miller, Wes Anderson collaborator Waris, and other NYC social fixtures (Brinkley was absent due to last-minute back surgery).

When the entire troupe, stomachs full, heads up to the Mercury to watch the show, they clearly differ from the venue’s usual crowd (indie-rock scruffs clad in weather-beaten black Converse and indifferent expressions). And so does Alexa Ray: poured into a black mini-dress, she takes to the stage and greets the crowd with seasoned showbiz confidence. An album is due out later this year, but for now, the only recorded material is a self-released six-song EP, Sketches (available through her website, streaming on her MySpace page or at Target stores nationwide), a collection of breezy, piano-based pop tunes with Broadway-baby vocals. At least she seems to realize her retro sound isn’t exactly commercial: “It took a couple years to figure out that the songs I like to play / Are often not the songs you hear about on the radio today,” she croons on “Songs of Yesterday.”

Joel is, of course, hardly the only celebrity offspring to try her hand at music-making: the current crop includes Hulk Hogan’s daughter Brooke, Sean Lennon, Growing Pains actor Alan’s son Robin Thicke (currently in Billboard’s top 10), and Elvis Perkins, the singer-songwriter son of late Psycho star Anthony. Schadenfreude tends to run rampant when it comes to kids who were already born on third base trying to score home runs, which makes it hard to decide objectively whether Alexa can transcend her background.  And while her lyrics contain the kind of clichés and faux-jadedness that only the very young can get away with, she’s clearly inherited at least some of her father’s talent for melody. “The Heart of Me” is a rollicking mid-tempo rocker, and the pointed, acerbic “Now It’s Gone” — which she dedicated at the show to her mother — should make Brinkley’s philandering ex-husband, Peter Cook, shiver in his Polo sweater. Joel may never become a great star, but then again, she very likely needs neither the money nor approval. As  her dad once sang, "I am the entertainer, and I know just where I stand." And indeed, unlike most peers her age, still struggling to find their identity, she seems pretty sure of where she is.

Aww come on guys! I don't think Alexa is ugly!! Sailor is adorable and she looks very much like Christie. Jack is gorgeous! He looks like his mom and his dad (Rick Taubman..is that his dad's name?).
Are you people blind??!!
Either way, I bet none of you are good looking.

Tanya Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 09:20 PM EST

The other daughter, Sailor, is fat and also rather homely. Being Christie comes off as a complete egomaniac I wonder how she feels about having ugly kids.

jb Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 12:44 AM EST

I am sure she is a talented girl...but she did not get an ounce of her mom's good looks. In fact all of Christie Brinkley's kids are ugly...poor things. wonder how that happened?!?

Pam Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

BLAH!!!! This is Brinkley's daughter? She must cry when she thinks about getting NONE of Christie's looks and all of her father's and he is one ugly man.

Pam Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

That is one ugly girl! Must be hard to be Brinkley's daughter and have a face like that!

Festus Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

I think what we have here is the music industry equivalent of the Spellings (Aaron and Tori). I don't think I need to say anymore.

Tortelli Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Well yes I guess the reviewer was being "mean"; on the other hand, I don't think this messageboard would have anywhere near the number of posts had the review been "nice." Most of the "supportive" reviews seem to have been inspired as counterattacks to negativity, rather than springing from any genuine admiration/enthusiasm.

MontanaBob Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

Well - it's been a few months. I have heard precious little-to-nothing regarding Ms. Joel. She has her myspace page - and her own website. All I find new on her website is SPAM, SPAM, SPAM. No mentions of tours or any other appearances. Meanwhile, Colbie Caillet has had umpteen hits on her myspace page. Hmmm...

Ellie .. x Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 02:20 AM EST

I Don't Understand.. How Is That A Bad Pic ? She Looks Beautiful ! I Read An Article In Sugar Mag About This Blog Entry, And Looked At Alexa's WebPage.. People Who Will Compare People To Their Parents Are Just Sad Loonies. Don't Listen To Em, Alexa ! :-)

Ollie Sun, Apr 8, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Wow. You guys remind me of a bunch of bullies I used to know in junior high who picked on my friend for being skinny. First of all, Alexa is a gorgeous girl. Go to her my-space page and see for yourself. Secondly, who are you to speculate that Alexa was "buying" good reviews? If her manager planned the show as an industry show, and artists NEVER plan their own shows to begin with, then what exactly is your point? Secondly, if Alexa was just another "fake" as you claim, Janet, she wouldn't stay after shows for 2-3 hours to meet fans (which she does on a regular basis-I've seen it). She also would have used her father's connections to get a deal already. Thirdly-is she not allowed to have a teeny pic up of her & her mom on a slide-show? Is she not allowed to list her father as one of her musical influences? What, is she supposed to pretend her parents don't exist? Why don't you go pick on someone with no grace, beauty, or talent--somebody your own size, like Paris Hilton.

Christina Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

Why are you all getting so angry and CRUEL on here? Do any of us really know what it's like to try to follow in such legendary footsteps, to be trying to make it on your own, writing your OWN music, and to constantly be compared to famous parents? Sure it's not easy, but I've been following Alexa's career, and she she been slowly building a remarkable amount of credibility on her own terms. On my-space, her fans sometimes ask her about her parents, like "how is your mom doing?" and she answers their questions as gracefully as possible. As to the Mercury dinner, it is very standard for unsigned artists to hold dinners for industry people before a show. I spoke to Alexa after the show (which was fantastic, by the way) and she said, "well, my manager planned this one, but next time I'm doing an NYC Show I want my fans there!" So until you actually bother to learn a little bit about this girl you peg a "fake", why don't you reserve some of your hostile judgment. It's hurtful stuff.

Cookeetta Sat, Mar 31, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

I really like AJ's music. I love the way her piano sounds. It is hard differentiate the new singers and songwriters in the radio because most of them sound the same, but this girl is really talented. Her music has a lot of personality, plus I think she is beautiful. Don't be mean, you have to accept that she IS pretty. She is not perfect, but who is?!!

janet Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 11:26 PM EST

Friends or groupies of Joel are arrogant idiots, accusing the writer of all kinds of things, even of intentionally choosing a bad pic. They should apologize to her. Joel is 21 and was able to invite all these people to an expensive dinner in exchange for...a good review? What does that tell you? Making it on her own? The show was just passable. Joel thinks she is a Jazz singer, which is laughable. A comment below by Mia is completely wrong. Joel mentions her father 4 times on her my space home page and more on blogs, where she mentions her mother too. I think that the critique is very generous. I see nothing wrong with the expression "faux jaddedness". It is true. Doesn't daughter Joel have a song about life being so hard that she can't cope. Give me a break! This is not art. Joel is just another fake.

shedevillover Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 12:17 AM EST

Says Jimmy Riot:

"LEAH GREENBLATT had dinner before the show on Alexa's tab. Then she came to the show on a ticket Alexa paid for."

This is pretty standard for reviewers, but maybe not for those riding the coattails of celebrity offspring. As a "seasoned" bass player you'd think Jimmy would know better. Or maybe not. He is Alexa's boyfriend after all. I was at this show and it was average at best. The only reason anyone is even aware of Alexa is because of her last name. There are hundreds of equally and far more talented girls out there that would have her spot if it wasn't handed to her. Money gets things for you. Until she understands this she'll remain another wannabe. Leah is right - she's not famous yet. Acclaim is earned regardless of who your parents are.

Continued from previous entry:....

generation, would be more to her liking. Ms. Greenblatt should probably avoid using phrases like “faux jadedness” when she is obviously, such a jaded poser, herself. Perhaps she was trying to impress us with German words like “Schadenfruede.” To include Alexa’s looks in the review, although she is a beautiful young woman, is completely beyond pointless. One last thought for Leah Greenblatt: Please, DO give up your day job; you stink on ice!

If Leah Greenblatt possessed one iota of professionalism, she might have written a fair and objective review of Lex’s work. I took the time to listen to several of her tunes, and feel she is remarkably talented and developed for such a young performer. If Leah had read any of A.R.J.’s Blog postings, she ought to be hard pressed to spout some of the mindless B.S. she wrote in her hatchet job review. Alexa is such a grounded young lady! I’ve been seriously involved in music for 30 years. I’m a bassist and singer, and play mostly blues, funk, and jazz. My parents (in their 70’s now) are both musicians, and my dad played professionally. Should that be any reason for me not to shamelessly exploit the talent (they) passed on to me genetically? Likewise, should an artist’s choice of musical styles being “retro” or not “exactly commercial” have anything to do with the tenor of the review? I suppose some nice hip-hop-pop, or rap, or over-produced pabulum coming from the American Idol

Leah Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

Hey guys, I'm glad you're all interested enough to leave comments on this board, but I have to say I'm pretty perplexed by the vitriol. We don't grade on Pop Watch, but if this show review was graded it would probably be a B or a B+...

I listened maybe half a dozen times to her EP, which I liked, and enjoyed the show; I also can't fail to acknowledge that she has two very, very famous parents, one of whom was slated to host the pre-show dinner. And that an expensive meal featuring boldfaced guests is rare for an unsigned artist. That's all!

p.s. Editors pick the photos that run on this site, not the writers. Promise.

Gabe Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 02:23 AM EST

This blogger makes no mention about the music or the show. Instead she wrote a hack job critique of the EP. Why fixate on Alexa's appearance and background like she’s not entitled to have any artistic inclinations because of how and by whom she was raised? Talk about missing the point of why people become artists in the first place…
It's lame that EW has turned into a gossip rag and the site is infested with small-minded vipers that want to insult musicians for doing their thing. I’m sure all these haters would love it if some schmuck came to their job and told them catty things about their thighs chunky thighs and how no one will ever love them. That would be as asinine as this review. What about those of us who actually want to know what’s going on in the music scene? I have subscribed to EW for years, but if these are the types of superficial articles I have to look forward to, then I will cancel my subscription and buy one for OK! instead.

I think these people who think that Alexa is a spoiled rich kid riding on her father's coat tails have not taken the time to find out anything about her. Alexa recently did a show at the Mohegan Sun Casino in CT. After the show she signed autographs and talked to every fan who wanted to for over three hours. This resulted in her not getting home until 4:00 am. Does this sound like someone who is taking the easy road to success. Of course some of the attention Alexa is getting is because of who her parents are, but that is unavoidable. Ultimately she will be judged on her talent, just like everyone else. If you would like to see some of the performance at the Mercury Lounge that was the subject of this review, go to Alexa's MySpace page, watch the videos she has posted there, and decide for yourself.

Mia Mon, Mar 19, 2007 at 09:31 PM EST

Wow, what a bunch of ignorant people we have here, criticizing Alexa for not "making it on her own", and "using her parents connections to get ahead", when, meanwhile, that's the exact opposite of what she's been doing. If we wanted to make it the easy way, she wouldn't be writing her own songs--she'd have someone else write them for her. She also wouldn't be touring and working her way up slowly, as a real, credible, touring artist, doing gigs like "Jazz Fest" and interviews for underground magazines like "Keyboard". I have followed Alexa's career from the beginning, and met her personally after shows, and she is an extremely grounded, sweet, beautiful young lady who NEVER brags about her parents. On her my-space page, she rarely mentions her parents--she discusses her music. Her music is unique and doesn't fit in a box. If she was taking the "easy route" she would be doing the same generic sound as everybody else--not dabbling in jazz, country, and blues.

Brad Sun, Mar 18, 2007 at 08:23 PM EST

There seems to be a problem with an idiot/groupie/friend of Joel right below. Of course Joel is using her privileged life to advance her career. You've got to be dumb to not see that.

Lisa Sun, Mar 18, 2007 at 07:44 AM EST

Josee, stfu. Alexa does NOT ride on her parents coattails at all. She rarely mentions them, nor are there any photos of her parents on her myspace. Why am I even responding to such a moron ?

Josee Sun, Mar 18, 2007 at 05:45 AM EST

Are we talking about the same A. Joel who keeps referring to her famous parents as if to let people know "hey I am famous already, all I need is a little push" and then turns around and complains about comparisons. On her myspace site, there is mummy here and daddy there, all over the place. By the way, there is nothing wrong with the picture and the article is not negative. It is actually rather objective. It kind of says "prove yourself" but I guess it's not enough for Miss Joel. She wants to be treated like a star. Poor little rich girl!

ZoniePaul Sun, Mar 18, 2007 at 03:57 AM EST

She said "Schadenfreude tends to run rampant when it comes to kids who were already born on third base trying to score home runs, which makes it hard to decide objectively whether Alexa can transcend her background. I say - I think they need to get a reviewer who can understand ARJ then, as this reviewer obviously doesn't "get" Alexa at all. Lex seems to put everything into making it on her own and NOT depending on the fame of her parents to be successful.

From someone who has actually met Lex and the band and chilled out at the bus talking with the group (AWESOME show at Rhythm Room in Phx!), I think it's pretty uncool to talk down on something the reviewer obviously knows little about and doesn't seem to want to make the effort to understand.

Just my two cents...

David Lee Roth Sat, Mar 17, 2007 at 08:01 PM EST

I want to lick Alexa where she pees...

Lourdes Sat, Mar 17, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

Excuse me everyone, celebrity rear kissers, I don't quite understand. Was ARJ buying good reviews with that dinner invitation? a rich girl criticizing today's music and hoping to get ahead. I find this snobbish. But then again, that's no surprise.

Valerie Sat, Mar 17, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

I guess it's clear that those who cannot do, review. ;-)

What Gives? Here's What I Think Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 08:05 PM EST

This reviewer doesn't give the proper kudos to a young singer/songwriter/musician who is daring to break out of the "Britney Spears/Jessica Simpson" mentality that is the music industry of the millenium....that's what I find shameful about the review.

Ok, so the reviewer admits that Alexa knows who and where she is..that's nice. But this review doesn't show any music appreciation.

Thanks.

What Gives? Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

You know, rather than marvel at everyone's witty (albiet sophmoric) banter, I actually read the article. What exact was so terrible about what the reviewer said? It wasn't a GLOWING review, but it didn't seem as harsh as you all are making it. If anything, I'd be more upset at the jackasses on her making such a big deal about Alexa's appearance.

Royale with Cheese Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

Witty, scathing comebacks, Lisa? I think I am in love...

"Greenblatt drank Alexa's wine, then spat in her face. What a b*tch."

Wow. I second that.

Jimmy Riot Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

P.S. ABOUT THE AUTHOR--LEAH GREENBLATT:

LEAH GREENBLATT had dinner before the show on Alexa's tab. Then she came to the show on a ticket Alexa paid for.

This being Greenblatt's 2nd unfavorable review of Alexa, it's obvious that she was planning on writing a curt, ignorant, biased, and parochial review. As anyone that was at this show will tell you, Alexa put on a hell of a show--it was undeniably great. I don't know why Greenblatt even came to it. Greenblatt's review would have been the same. Greenblatt even references songs that weren't performed that night.

Greenblatt drank Alexa's wine, then spat in her face. What a b*tch.

Mindy Moak Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

No pun intended but your review seems to speak "volumes" about what might be some of your own personal issues... Alexa's inner and outer beauty, as well as her talent, will no doubt triumph over occasional and unfortunate pettiness.

Jean Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Alexa is a beautiful person, inside and out. If you want to talk about her physical appearance - she looks a lot like her Dad, and has her Mom's smile and cheekbones. There is no doubt in my mind that she has inherited her Dad's musical talent, but she's clearly got her own style. No one should expect her to be just like her Dad.

She is a breath of fresh air in this day and age of Britney Spears and other talentless "artists." Alexa has a fantastic voice, writes her own songs, and is well trained in piano. While she is the daughter of two famous people, everyone must remember that she is ALEXA JOEL. She's her own person with her own talents. Many college kids who have watched her perform had no idea who her parents were. They were simply blown away by this very talented performer. Alexa's career will be huge, and I cannot wait to purchase her CD's and watch her in concert! My only hope is that she stays true to herself and plays the type of music that she likes.

Julian Sage Miyata Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

I think you are talented, pretty, kind, and have a BIG future in front of you Alexa! I'm only 11 and I will be growing up with you as my role model for how people should be. (Alexa invited me to see her show backstage at the Mohegan. She's great!)

You friend,

Julian Sage Miyata

Krista Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 10:37 AM EST

By the way, Leah, how can you call it responsible criticism to compare a 21 year-old emerging artist developing her own original sound to a musical LEGEND like Billy Joel who, I might add, had his share of ridiculously malicious reviews?? Daughter or not, it's plain stupid to compare the two. But for the record, let me just say that I think Lex has every bit the talent her father has, and every bit the potential to be as big of a star as she wants to be. Luv ya, Lex!

Royale with Cheese Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

Krista Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

I gotta tell ya, this is one of the most blatant personal attacks on a talented artist that this magazine has ever had the nerve to publish. This entire article is garbage and deserves no place in a so-called professionally written publication. Judging from the cheap shots taken by the author on Alexa (that would be "Ms. Joel" to you, Leah), it's obvious that this entire review was written in the type of mean-spirited, shallow, childish, vendetta fashion that makes it worthy of nothing more than middle school note-passing. If you have nothing better to do than crack on someone's looks, check yourself out in the mirror and go to work...I'm sure you'll find alot more things to say about yourself than you could possible say about Alexa, who by the way, is BEAUTIFUL,inside and out. Alexa is a VERY talented and compassionate individual who inspires thousands, if not millions, of people everyday. Get over yourself, Leah. Music fans LOOOOVE Alexa, this article won't change that. HATE ON IT.

Kerry Krassner Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 09:02 AM EST

I didn't have enough room to say everything I wanted to say in my last comment, LOL.
I'm shocked that people are still so superficial as to judge people solely on their looks!!!
I think she looks as BEAUTIFUL in this picture as in any other I've seen of her.
Miss Joel is BEAUTIFUL on the outside as well as on the inside.
That first time I saw her perform, she made a point of coming out and talking to people after, the show, signing autographs, taking pictures, etc. She is GENUINE & I don't think you can say that much anymore about people in show business.
It's the same reason I am a huge fan of her father. They both know that the fame & fortune don't really matter at the end of the day, it's being able to do something that you love & being recognized by people who appreciate you for your talent that really matters.
LOVE YA LEX!!!
KERRY ;)

Kerry Krassner Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

"Kids who were already born on third base trying to score home runs" does not apply in the case of Miss Joel!!!

I will admit that my curiousity was peaked when I saw her name listed on a newspaper ad for Toad's Place in New Haven, CT & that being a huge fan of her father's work was a driving force for my attending her show.

However, that being said, I found her to be a TRUE TALENT in her own right & immediately fell in love with her singing. Yes, she does not possess the "typical sound" of most of today's artists & that is REFRESHING! She's more ecclectic, like Norah Jones or Fiona Apple, & I do believe that I've heard a song or two from them on the radio.

If you are judging Miss Joel on the basis of some words written by an ignorant reviewer or by other people's comments, don't. Listen for yourself, check out her myspace page, her website, or even better yet, check out a live show, then make your decision. I'm sure you will see her for the talent she truly is.

Lori Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 08:20 AM EST

I think it's a bit ridiculous to compare Alexa Ray Joel to her father in that his influences and life experiences were quite different than hers. Also, what do looks have to do with talent? The problem with music today is that everyone coming out now has to be sent for "grooming" or they don't make the cut! Two perfect examples? Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Paris has absolutely NO talent and while Britney can dance, she can't sing! What if we criticized musicians in the same way in years past? We wouldn't have Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell or Ella Fitzgerald because they didn't fit the bill that critics today seem to need.

Shame on you guys for not embracing someones daring to be different from the "cookie cutter" pop that is out there today. This is why I never rely on a critics opinion about anything anymore, because quite frankly, that's bought and paid for too.

The Big Orange Chuck Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 05:40 AM EST

I enjoy Alexa's music very much and understand everyone has different tastes but are the personal attacks on someone trying to persue their dream needed. If anything, I think Jimmy was very controled to come to her defense and am glad those who like her and enjoy her voice defend her. I was a huge fan of her fathers because I love someone who can just sit down to a piano and entertain me and thats why I also enjoy the talent and creativity of Alexa. I can write words but I only wish I had the gifted voice and music writing ability she has. Keep up the great work Alexa and ignore stuff like this, I am sure even your dad got bad reviews at times as well and he is one of the great story tellers of all time.

Jimmy Riot Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 02:52 AM EST

Hats off to all of you for sticking up for Alexa--I second everything you guys said.
To those losers that called my girlfriend "ugly" and said other really ignorant things about her, besides the obvious (which is "F**K YOU"), is that you're sad and little, and I guess that's why you take the time to talk sh*t about wonderful, beautiful people that you don't know and judge someone by one lousy photo. However, your jaded, scathed, miserable little leader Greenblatt didn't give you much else to go on in her negatively biased piece--not even commenting on Alexa's voice... Greenblatt, along with all of you, can kiss my ass.

Debbie Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 11:49 PM EST

Well..she is not relying on her dad to put her on some tired Reality Show and she is not trying to be the next Britney (thank goodness!) She actually has talent which is rare. We have so many popular singers out there that do nothing but shake their butt to sell albums. Their managers find people to write their songs and engineers amplify their voices to make them sound like they can sing. And, many of these so called artists can't even play a single note on an instrument. Alexa has a great voice, writes her own music, plays piano and she is trying to be herself. This picture was not the best picture I have seen of her, but it is not horrible either. Those of you who are criticizing Alexa’s appearance should be ashamed of yourselves. Grow up!

Margaret Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 11:19 PM EST

Blame and critiscism are charecteristics of low self esteem...people who put down others have to have someone below them so they can feel better than someone...because they don't like themselves. Pray for people like that..they are lonely and unappreciated....

LisaMarie Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 10:52 PM EST

Alexa is an amazing young woman. I think some of you have nothing better to do than waste your days away reading these blogs and shoving cheese fries down yout throat at the keys. The person who wrote this OBVIOUSLY picked a bad photo and that makes her as guilty as the rest of you losers who have nothing better to do than spew nonsense online. Go to Alexa's MySpace page and listen to her music. I LOVE the fact that she is playing what she WANTS to play and not what the radio stations want. Kudos to her!!!

I have to agree with Cynthia. PCD, Nelly, Paris, etc - that kind of garbage is what's wrong with music. I haven't heard Alexa, but I will give her a chance. I personally don't view her any differently because of who her parents are. I actually feel happy for her about that. I wish Billy Joel had been my Dad...lol!!!

Royale with Cheese Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 10:51 PM EST

Everyone judges. It's human nature. If you didn't judge, you would let your children play with "strange men" probably. We have no more time on our hands than someone who is leaving a positive comment. Old, tired, lame arguments. Us calling her ugly had nothing to do with you. Stop inserting yourself into that part of the conversation. Piss off.

Erin Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 10:42 PM EST

The lady who wrote this obviously has a chip on her shoulder about something. It sounds like she wrote it before she even watched the show. Is it so crazy that she would want to pursue a career in music with the obvious talent that has been passed down to her???
And to all the people who are actually calling her "ugly" in this picture... get a life! Alexa is a beautiful and talented girl- check out her myspace page and see for yourself instead of judging one picture. I don't even know what to say... people have way too much time on their hands and apparently this world is filled with perfect people who think they have the right to judge others.

Mrs. Whosit Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

She is very beautiful, and very talented. That is truly an awful picture that you chose to publish, I hope that everyone that reads this goes to her Myspace profile and listens and looks at her other pictures before they chime in with nasty comments. But WHY are we criticizing MUSICIANS for their looks anyway??? And what 21 year old should be compared to a LEGEND like Billy Joel, no matter that she is his daughter? This piece was VERY biased and unfair.

TBK Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

What is wrong with you people?!?!?! Alexa ia gorgeous inside and out. Why the attack on her looks in this specific picture? Her music is genuine and she may have an extra advantage on all of us other musicians, but as a musician I think she is extremely talented...this is only the beginning for her.
When will people stop confusing a bad picture day with talent and true beauty?
The ugly people are the ones who think their critique of Alexa's outside appearance within a not-so-perfect picture or otherwise is helpful to a young lady's career.

What a wonderful world we live in when we can all sit here and attack someone without getting a response back. Shame on all of you--Grow up!

scoop921 Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

So what if she's Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley's daughter? She is so talented in her own right and people need to stop being down on her for persuing her dreams. Yeah, she may have it easier ~ but then again, not really because she's going to have to overcome all of the skepticism of infantile boneheads that just want to call her names because she has famous parents. People that only post comments that put people down to make themselves feel big need to grow up. Personally, I think that she's a unique beauty with awesome talent.

Cynthia Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

Clearly, those who have judged her, have not heard her! I was at her show at Mohegan Sun, and it blew me away! The presence that she has on stage can be matched by none. She has a phenomenal voice, and is an excellent song writer. Maybe she doesn't have aything that would be ready for radio, but that's only because groups like the PussyCat Dolls (a former burlesque act) and Nelly Furtado (as I recall, she started out as a pop singer, and has just recently turned trashy) currently dominate radio air time. What decent artist has a shot with that kind of trash on the radio?

Bottom line: the apple did not far from the tree. She is just as talented as her father, and may even surpass him one day.

BTW, I would like to see the high school photos of those who judge this photo. I'm sure we'd all have a great laugh!!!

Lisa Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

Lex is beautiful inside and out, which is something you all cant say for yourselves. I bet 70% of you are 250+ lb pigs who live hand to mouth.

She was raised with music, she was raised to play it,create it, and love it; and that's what she's doing. If you dont like it, you can go scratch.

You minimum wagers, wearing size XXXL, with zero talent at anything, only WISH you were Alexa Ray Joel. Whether you admit it or not.

Grow the F*** up.

We love you Lex, Lisa (and Lauren too) XXX Keep up the great hard work. You already ARE making it. You have the talent, the right attitude, a great band, and yes you are attractive. Please do not take to heart the comments of people like this. These people criticize you, and others, so harshly because it makes them feel better about themselves and their own shortcomings in life.

Leah Greenblatt, you seem to get off on tearing people down all the time. Does that make you feel good? Makes you look like a piece of crap though.

Caz UK Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 03:19 AM EST

The ugliest thing on this page is comments from people who think it's OK to make personal attacks on Alexa's appearance. OK, it's not the best photo, I suspect that was very deliberate as there are plenty out there where she looks stunning. But none of that matters anyway, because Alexa is a BEAUTIFUL person. If you bother to take a look at her myspace page, see the messages she regularly leaves for her fans where she bares her soul and embraces their support, you'll see that for yourself. Whether you like her style of music or not, you can't help but like HER for the person she is and what she is trying to do.

Her name is Joel, she was born with it, has every right to use it, and is proud of it. She is not trying to use it, she wants to make her own way and is doing a bl**dy good job so far from what I can see. She has inevitably got some of her fans from her father, but that's because they recognise her TALENT in her own right! Listen to her sing, judge her on her music, please!

kayla Wed, Mar 14, 2007 at 02:37 AM EST

i've seen other pictures of alexa, and i really think she's gorgeous, and that this one's just a bad picture..
and i also really love her music and i definitely think she could become really popular, but it's just not the kind of music that would get played on the radio, that's all...

Phantom Tue, Mar 13, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

Freaking shame that she doesn't look like her Mother. Christie has THE most gorgeous smile ever. Alexa...well, I'm thinking more like The Joker.

Nikki Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

Can that smile be more creepy?

GeeMoney Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

She's about as ugly as Billy Joel.

Yoo Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

the picture reminds me of Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien, where they morph pictures to see what two celebrities' offspring would look like.

Kevin Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

I'm sorry, I know I'm in the minority here, but I think she's quite pretty (though the eyebrows could get some more plucking). What can I say, I'm a sucker for big eyes.

GovernmentGal Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

Is it just me...but I am expecting her to scream out "No more wire hangers"!

really Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 04:15 AM EST

hmm, maybe she just shouldn't smile, Posh doesn't............

Jakeem Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 12:37 AM EST

I suppose it was inevitable that Alexa Ray would have a future in music. After all, she was in a music video when she was an infant!

See: "A Matter of Trust" (Billy Joel)

Jaded1 Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 12:09 AM EST

Man....I guess genetics really is a crapshoot.

really Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

wow, y'all (EW) are mean, that's a terrible pic!

just me Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 09:41 PM EST

Poor kid looks just like her father.

Karla Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

Wow, I can really hear her father's chord structures and phrasing in her arrangements. But that's not a surprise, since she grew up listening to his music. It's probably a part of her genetic code.

I like the songs, but nothing really pops out at me. She's clearly well-trained, but for me, the best troubadours and poets are the outsiders. But I don't want her to go changing or to develop unpleasant social tics just so her songs will become more compelling.

I think it's a testament to her mom that Alexa grew up to be self-aware and self-confident, even in the glare of fame and multiple marriages. Good on you, Christie.

Elizabeth Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

Anyone else think it's creepy that the daughter looks like the new wife? Ew!

Phil Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

I'm not trying to hate but the girl's EYES look ENORMOUS in just about every picture I've ever seen of her....So between the bug eyes & the giant flower in her hair pictured for this item, who can actually concentrate on her music!?

DTK Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 05:01 PM EST

The girl can definitely sing (although she scoops too many notes), and seems to have skills at the piano. That being said, her music has none of the interesting melody or harmony that her dad had, and she certainly hasn't written anything that is radio ready. Will be interesting to see if she can develop into something more.
