After randomly breaking into my spot-on impression of Sesame Street's The Count ("I loooove to count! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!") during a very silly Thursday night, I spent a lot of time hunting for vintage Count videos on YouTube. Here's a "wonderful" one about mail. And here's one in Dutch. But the greatest clip I found — and have now watched well over 40 times — is the aptly titled "How Crayons Are Made." It was produced at some point in the '70s but recurred on the show well through the mid-'80s. The entire two minutes have been playing, in blurry (but definitely orange) snippets, in my brain for 20 years. It's soooo good to have you back, crayons video. And nice to know I'm not totally insane.

You can't even pick a favorite part. Terrifying closeup of the little girl? Old-woman factory mules lifting hundreds of crayons at a time? I think I'm most impressed by the music, and how the resounding four-note riff comes at two distinct and pivotal moments: hardened wax rising from the grid and crayons getting boxed! And the question that had to be on every kid's mind: Orange?

Who else remembers this?!

Please let me know when you find the lyrics to "I'm a dog, I'm a working dog, I'm a hard working dog." I used to watch Sesame Street with my son and that's all of the song I can remember. Oh and "working like a doggone dog."

I did find the lyrics to another favorite "Let's go riding in an automoblile, let's take a ride in the car..." on a website with Sesame Street lyrics, but the dog song wasn't there...Bummer

This video is just as awesome as I remember. There are so many images that I have distinct memories of seeing when I was little. Also, it's somehow fitting that it's grandmas making the crayons.

Hey Annie-- I'd like to request a weekly "Random Sesame Street Moment". It's so much fun to remember classic '70s and '80s kid TV!! Although I just watched that llama clip and I want to know what they were smoking when they came up with that one. :)

I, too, remember the Crayon-making from Mr. Roger's. However, the song that's still in my head after 20-plus years is from Schoolhouse Rock - 'Hanker for a hunk o' cheese'! I hanker for a hunk of, a slab or slice or chunk of, I hanker for a hunk of cheese! Television is magic!

Thank you thank you thank you for finding this. This has always been one of the most "vivid" memories I had of my old childrens television programming days, some 25 years ago. Though, like another poster, I thought it was Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. I remember I used to take my own crayons and put them in big piles so I could carry them around like the old ladies in the video. Such good memories!

I only vaguely remember this, but when I saw the one about working in the giant letter I ("Capital I," http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vCyupsecJc) it was so cool to feel my brain retrieve the recognition from DEEP within the recesses. What an awesome little song.

The one I'm dying to see is of the lady with the miniskirt and the afro who has to put an "R" into her VW bug to get it to run. Does anyone remember that one? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

I remember it. The weirdest clip from Sesame Street I remember was one called "Me and my Llama." The kid takes his llama to the dentist. Crazy! Anyone remember that?

Thank you for finding this! As soon as I read "How Crayons Are Made" I remembered it vividly. When I was 3 and 4 I wanted to work there because I figured I would get to have all the crayons in the world. I wanted to be the woman who was putting all the different coloured crayons in that machine.

I don't remember that, but I do remember the trip to the crayon factory on Mr. Rogers'...Me and My Llama! My mother and I occasionally reference the song to this day...though I had no recollection of the 'video.' I have to go look up, "I'm a dog, I'm a dog, I'm a working dog, I'm a hard-working dog..." Another one my mother and I still bring up from time to time...

The Yip-Yip Aliens with the ringing phone

Bobby McFerrin and the Count singing about coconuts on an island (hope you found that one!)

And of course, the first (and in my opinion, ONLY) Sesame Street motion picture, Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird. Where's the Special Edition DVD?!?

I totally remember this! My sister and I also always start singing 1,2,3,4,5 6,7,8,9,10....11,12 to each other whenever someone says 1,2,3. Does anyone else remember this with the pinball machine? Such good memories.

Yeah, totally remember this from Mr Rogers, probably Sesame Street too. God bless YouTube for bringing back weird memories of my childhood. Don't remmeber the music being so tinny and strange, but that butterfly she's coloring, the whirlpool of orangeness, the lines of crayons marching down into the boxes... it's all been in my head for a good 20 years.
But why not orange? What else are you going to color a monarch butterfly?

Its great to see clipst that remind you of exactaly what you were doing and where you were when it happened. I know I was sitting in front of the TV playing with my barbie and my two sisters who loved it just as much as I did. Does anyone remember the alphabet clip for the letter O where it was chasing this guy and the guy couldnt get away from it. I am haunted by the letter O till this day!!!!!

When I was a kid in the early '80s, they used to actually take us to the Camel cigarette factory here in Winston-Salem to see the cigs being made. Nice, huh. (We also got to see a 4-foot-tall camel made entirely out of tobacco, but that was just gravy. ) I remember thinking, this is cool, but not as cool as that orange crayon factory! Thanks for the memories...

As I am 22 and definitely remember this clip (thanks so much for bringing me back!) it must have run at least to the end of the 80s and possibly even early 90s. Maybe the networks need to learn a little something from Sesame Street...

Yea Annie!!! I completely remember this!!! Whenever I am home sick I watch Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow. If only 3-2-1 Contact reruns were still on I could rock out like its 1982. I loved Mr Rogers as a kid too, but now for some reason the puppets creep me out.

Of course I remember the crayon factory video! I think the best part is the old woman smiling as the sheet of labels runs through the machine. It's like she's thinking, "I'm making crayons! Whee!!"

I've recently begun watching Sesame Street with my daughter and I'm amazed that there are still animated clips that I remember from my childhood. When something works, it's timeless.

As a parent of 3 year old twins Sesame Street is in heavy rotation at our house and they still play this clip on the show believe it or not. I just saw it again the other day. I also remember it very well from when I was a child and was amazed that they are still playing it.

I have never forgotten this video- amazing, the power of television. Most of my knowledge of how things are made comes from Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow & Polka Dot Door. Sigh. Good times.

I always thought the crayons were associated with Mister Rogers Neighborhood. The crayons have always been my favorite part and I've had a few nostalgia moments with my friends who have agreed. It's funny how they are universally remembered after 15-20 years! So pretty!!

Heck yes I do! Even better, I remember the one about making a saxophone that started by showing large sheets of brass being stamped out, all accompanied by a hardcore funk saxophone solo. Awesome.
