Trailer Blazer: 'Nanny Diaries,' 'Underdog,' 'Across the Universe'

Nanny_l The Nanny Diaries (April 20) I was hoping this might be another translation of a ho-hum book into a better movie (a la The Devil Wears Prada), but this trailer is not a good sign. Despite a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson (pictured), Laura Linney, and Chris Evans, the scenes pieced together here might be better titled Failure to Amuse. Only the final line (about a plush toy) made me laugh, although hipness points must be added for using Fine Young Cannibals' ''She Drives Me Crazy'' as a backdrop.

Underdog (Summer 2007) I admit it. I'm a sucker for canines in clothing, and that tagline — "One nation, under dog" — rocks! I'm totally taking my nephews. That's a good enough excuse, right?

Across the Universe (Sept. 28) So here's one that sounds, well, interesting. Julie Taymor (Frida) directing Evan Rachel Wood (remember when she was on Profiler?) in a period musical about young love in the Vietnam War era — built around the catalog of the Beatles. It looks strange and compelling and maybe great or maybe a total train wreck. I'm gonna take a wait-and-see approach.

I have not seen the movie 'the nanny diaries' yet, and,as I am French, I won't see it before october. But the movie really seems to be fun and the novel, which was so marvellous, seems to be respected. I cannot wait to see it!

RE:Hipness points added for the FYC?
I was thinking the same thing. They aren't the Velvet Underground. What would have been more interesting would have been a track off Scar's rumored Tom Wait's cover album. Tango Till They're Sore maybe.
Underdog looks Garfield/Scooby Doo awful. They're ruining my childhood one crappy live action movie at a time.

I'm excited for Across the Universe but more cuz of Julie Taymor's stage work (yes including but not limited to Lion King) than her film work which I find kinda patchy so far--loved Titus for what it was, was let down by Frida for what it wasn't...

But to call it a period musical when it's meant to be--especially the second half so surreal and abstract seems odd to me. Then again these were the 60s... I've heard largely good buzz but a few people have complained it's an overlond music video--my one worry--that gets tiresome at the half way point. Still--I'll be there on opening weekend. Hey it can't be worse than the last similar attempt at using the Beatles catalogue--the BeeGees Srgt. Pepper's film (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKNVa5jnKmw)

When I saw the trailer at first I was thinking "why do I already know all these songs" then realized they were Beatles and this was Taymor's new film--and Evan did some singing on Once and Again--not a bad voice... (I miss that show...

Hipness points added for the FYC? If your baseline is Lawrence Welk, maybe.

Again Hollywood mucks up another favourite cartoon of mine - will they ever learn to leave classics alone?
I might have seen the Underdog movie had they left it a cartoon.
Oh Sweet Polly Purebread.......What's next Hong Kong Phooey??

They changed the name of the main character in Nanny Diaries? That's never a good sign.

The kid in Across the Universe sounds exactly like Ewan McGregor In Moulin Rouge

ummmm......

Is that Underdog trailer REALLY serious? It looks like an SNL skit.

Sally Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

It looks like Laura Linney is totally stealing the movie from Scarlett Johansen. And you know - this may be Scarlett's last time to prove she can open a movie.
