Jimmy Fallon as Conan's successor?

Feb 22, 2007, 11:52 AM | by Michelle Kung

Categories: Deals, Television

Fallon_l On Saturday Night Live, he co-anchored "Weekend Update" with Tina Fey and hosted a talk show as Barry Gibb in a recurring sketch. But is Jimmy Fallon ready for a real-deal hosting gig? NBC apparently thinks so; the New York Times reports that the network is currently discussing a "holding deal," which would secure Fallon's on-air services, with the comedian and his representatives. Though the agreement wouldn't guarantee Fallon a late-night job, NBC has been putting out feelers for successors to Conan O'Brien after the redhead host takes over from Jay Leno on The Tonight Show in 2009.

So far, the only other announced contender is Carson Daly, who has made no secret of his ambition to succeed O'Brien, and can't be terribly happy with the news that NBC may pass him over after his years spent working the network's post-Conan graveyard shift. And I'm sure Ryan Seacrest wouldn't mind being considered; after all, the host-bot is only on television for 50 hours a week.

So who would you like to see take over for Conan when he leaves Late Night? And do you think Fallon can refrain from cracking himself up for a whole hour?

Matt Iseman's the person; quick one liners, zany, HOT eye candy, insanely funny, great delivery !!!!
Matt's THE MAN !!!!!

NOT Funny, not funny at all..

Sergio Sun, May 18, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

Terrible, terrible choice, NBC. It's like no one did their homework and realized viewers hate him, and his talents as an interviewer? Well, Fallon subbed for Letterman not too long ago and was HORRIBLE. Youtube 5 star horrible. I cringed at his interview with Conan on the day of the announcement as he was trying so hard but was NOT FUNNY. You're an ok performer, Fallon. But host of Late Night? This is going to be painful. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

grophrackolum Fri, May 16, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon. Not Funny, Not Funny at all.

infamous Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

Just shows how dumb NBC are to hire a broke unfunny comedian. Jimmy Fallon was the downfall of the ledendary Saturday Night Live. Ever since Will Farrel, Chris Kattan, Rob Snyder left the show and these new Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Horitio Sans came in was downhill from there. Come'on Horatio Sans? I don't know if that's a math problem or a font! He's just as worst as Jimmy Fallon, can't keep a straight face and looks at the camera when the skit isn't even funny. What a dumb bunch of people.

AJ Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

This is just proof to me that television is seeing the end of its days. The Internet is where it's at. Jimmy Fallon? PASS. Thank you for giving me no reason to watch TV at night anymore.

Tom Horseonovich Colligan Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

Hello. My name is Tom Horseonovich Colligan, better known simply as Horseonovich (you can Google me for more info).

I happen to be quite knowledgeable about Jimmy Fallon as we live in the same neighborhood (Gramercy Park). He frequents a rather lame and overpriced coffee shop that I walk past and scoff at with great disdain. Here are my thoughts (shared, I see, by most of the viewing public that have been exposed to Jimmy Fallon).

This guy is not funny, not charming, not talented, and worse, is actually annoying and a turnoff to most people on earth.

I am posting this simply because I want to be able to point back to this post a year from now when Fallon flops miserably in Conan's seat and the network cancels his contract. I enjoy being right, and I have a perfect record to date - we circumferentially challenged guys have to be sharp to get any action, if you know what I mean.

All the best,

Horseonovich (Google me!)

Bill Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

When Ryan Seacrest is a better choice, we've reached the bottom of the barrell. Seacrest out....

Kyle Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is not funny ever. Has anyone laughed at themselves more and never been funny. We get it already you wish you were Adam Sandler. Actually you are just like Sandler, just not funny.

swb Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 02:56 AM EST

It's hilarious how little any of you know. You spit out names like any of it actually matters. You've obviously never of anything called a "contract". First off, they would have to find someone that's not currently under a binding contract, which leaves out 90% of the people previously listed in these mindless rants. Which means they have to find someone that has little to no career, like Jimmy Fallon, to fill the space. Secondly, after locating someone they believe has the talent and free time to fill the space, this person also has to AGREE on the terms of the forementioned contract. So, spitting out names means absolutely nothing.

Jimmy will be amazing in Conan's spot. He is a likeable guy and very good with people and probably one of the more nicer comedians in showbiz. I want him to take over for Conan because I cannot imagine anyone else besides him (except for maybe Tina Fey but she has 30 Rock). But I honestly believe Jimmy deserves to take over for Conan.

The sketches from the time he was on SNL, a lot of them that were labeled the best had him in it which had him laughing.

Cowbell, Debbie Downer....

anyone?

Yeah, haters be pwnd.

He also gave Lorne the idea to hire Andy Samberg whom a lot of his haters love. You should be thanking Jimmy Fallon instead of ridiculing him. Jealousy is one of the biggest downfalls of society.

Jonathan Sun, Aug 19, 2007 at 01:35 AM EST

sienfeld / gaffigan is an awesome idea. Fallon and daly are both just god awful ideas. But hey dont worry for all ytou conan fans...check out the craig fergesson show...a pleasant surprise!!

Emily Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

I think Jimmy Fallon will be a great replacement. He's hilarious and people already have a good sense of his personality from snl. I think this might also get more teenagers to watch the show

regular guy Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:32 AM EST

They should give Tina Fey a chance to host.If you look at 30 Rock, you can see she would fit in great with the type of format of Conan's show...Witty..low brow
...Zany..She would take the show further...to new heights

Teff Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

Fallon or Daly? It's like deciding whether to be strangled or drowned. Someone suggested Jim Gaffigan which would probably be an excellent choice, another person who I'd LOVE to see is Norm MacDonald as his personal self is always so hilarious compared to his on-screen (movie) acting. If either Daly or Fallon tries to fill Conan's show I know for sure NBC will lose alot of viewers, yours truly included.

Jim G Rules! Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Jim Gaffigan. Hands down. He would kick butt. And he's part of the Pale Force!

Phil Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

Amy Sedaris!

hananah Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:58 AM EST

i concede with the majority of people here. carson blows...his show is painful to watch. fallon would be a decent improvement in his place, although neither of them could adequately fill conan's shoes. seacrest? pshaw. jon stewart was a good suggestion, and a female host would be an interesting consideration, although no one specific comes to mind. i'm really not much for t.v. in general. only the ginger headed lizard man could lure me from time to time.

Scoop Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Right first name. Wrong last. Try "Kimmel"

Mel Mon, Mar 12, 2007 at 11:13 PM EST

The Carson Daly show makes me want cable.
Chris Parnell would be so funny in his own late night show. SNL should've kept him. I love his straight guy rap/bit.
Yup, and Andy Richter should be considered also to take Conan's place.
Jon Stewart, another great to do late night!

Vanessa Sat, Mar 3, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Scott P,

Please die. That whole he laughs line is lame. You act like a few sketches is his entire life? Eat me.

Vanessa Sat, Mar 3, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

I'd love to see my Jimmy on the tv every night! And shame for the Chris Parnell insult in the magazine. Parsny owns.

NYCGirl Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 02:07 AM EST

I like the idea of Jerry (Seinfeld) or Tina Fey.

Sarah Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

Agree with some of the previous posters: Ellen, Ellen, Ellen!
She's perfect for the job; actually, I would prefer that Conan stay where he is and that Ellen replace Leno.

Tom Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 05:41 PM EST

Fallon might be good--but sometimes he talks so fast with mushy enunciation that I can hardly understand him. Carson Daly is smug and boring.

brandonk Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

Andy Richter, of course.

poochie Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

I think it should be D L Hughley, who should have won the spot instead of Craig Ferguson.

EP Sato Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 08:25 AM EST

David Spade's a bad choice. His "Showbiz Show" is so wack that he straight up lifts lines from the "comments" section Popwatch and then rehashes them as his on jokes on TV. Remember his joke about Tom Hanks' Hair? Popwatch had made the joke two weeks earlier. His news clips and tidbits are not only unfunny, but they are painfully uninsightful and unoriginal.

Spade's best work was as the sassy receptionist. His cynical take on hollywood could rarely make anyone in the audience laugh, much less in the country. I'd watch a show hosted by BILLY BUSH before I'd watch Spade without Farley to prop him up.

Mad Max Fri, Feb 23, 2007 at 12:25 AM EST

I don't get it,Fallon showed to me little talent on SNL and he's not FUNNY!!

jack Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 10:33 PM EST

Just adding my two cents about Leno, he's terrible, the biggest hack in show business.

As for replacing Conan, maybe Vince Vaughn, he was great when he filled in for Letterman a few years ago.

Theresa Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

I'd prefer Joel McHale to Jimmy Fallon.

Theresa Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

I'd prefer Joel McHale to Jimmy Fallon.

Skippy Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

DAVID SPADE would be great for the job!

Ceballos Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 08:48 PM EST

Ok, the crack thing was out of line...but honestly...Leno's Tonight Show is the absolute worst suckfest on TV...I mean, this is so obvious, that I feel embarrassed to point it out.

Ceballos Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

Carrie...seriously...put down the crack...Leno's stand up is funny, but his Tonight Show is hacksville!

Joe Romeo Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Colbert

Carrie Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

I can't stand Conan. Jay is the best. I saw his show live twice. They should keep Jay as long as Jay wants. He is the best late night host on TV. NBC will regret ending Jay's contract. I hope the Tonight Show remains in LA and does not move to New York. Jay represents our home city of the greatest....Los Angeles.

Mary Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

Amy Sedaris!

Ceballos Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Where's the love for some Andy Richter...ever since leaving Late Night with Conan, he hasn't found the right vehicle, though he's done quality work (Arrested Development guest spot(s), Andy Richter Controls the Universe). His new show'll probably get cancelled just like the others...so maybe he'll be free in '09.
Who doesn't want a Conan/Andy one-two punch?

furry_tom Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

At least Leno will be gone. His funniest bit is reading the newspaper. I hope Conan gets to bring his writers with him.

Kari Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

I think Jimmy would do a good job. I saw him fill in for Dave Letterman once and he was pretty hilarious, but as long as it's not Carson Daly I don't really care. Carson Daly is so boring and completely unfunny, he would pretty much ruin late night tv if he were on at a watchable hour.

Emilee Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

What about Michael Ian Black or Hal Sparks? They were both hilarious on "I love the 80's."

Ned Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

Carson Daly sucks, he's just horrible, no decectable talent other than being blandly handsome. Before I decided to shell out a little extra money for cable, he was the only thing on when I got home from work.

I'm not a big Jimmy Fallon fan, but I'd take him over Carson Daly or Ryan Seacrest any day. Why don't they see if Andy Richter would be interested? Or at least see if he would be willing to be the Ed McMahon of the 21st century on The Tonight Show. Tina Fey might be cool too.

Jason2 Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

No!!!! Good God no! If I want to watch someone laugh at his own jokes more than the audience, I'll have my four year old do stand up.

Peter Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon's problem is that he thinks he's waaaaaaaay funnier than he is, and always breaks character. Also, he is best in small doses.

And carson daly? Yeah right, the guy makes Magic Johnson seem like a late night comedy genius.

Joel Mchale is a great pick. Or Even Zach Galafinakis, of "Late world with Zach" fame. That guys is insanely funny and intelligent, just like Conan.

Mirka Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 03:28 PM EST

How about Janeane Garofalo? She's funny, she's cranky like Letterman, and I bet she has a great take on the entertainment industry.

Please, no Carson Daly. He should only be on at 4am, if at all.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

Can we get Wanda Sykes in there? She is a hilarious comedienne, talk shows love to have her on as a guest, and there hasn't been a good African American host in late night since Arsenio Hall (yeah, I skipped you on purpose, Magic Johnson! ::shudder::)

mike Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

Jimmy would be great. Every Saturday night after watching Update with Seth and Amy, I miss Jimmy and Tina.

Ep Sato Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

Someone just mentioned Jeff Foxworthy, and that's an interesting idea. Why not do these shows from a more blue collar perspective? It might be fun to have a host who asks the guests if they've ever used a beer bong, know what 420 stands for or have ever worn the same underwear three days in a row. At least it would make ME laugh to see A listers uncomfortably answer those types of questions.

yssys Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

Yeah Joel McHale, he is funny and talented, more than those two...

Tony B. in So Cal Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

Carson Daly is not funny at all and his show is horrible. I have never lauged once during the show (which I only watch when I become to lazy to change the channel after Conan) and he does seem into himself. I don't know how his show has lasted for five years. I hope anyone but him gets Conan's spot in 2009.

Kevin Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

So glad I'm not the only one that thinks Joel McHale is hilarious. Joel McHale all the way.

Carson Daly is still alive?

anon Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

I like the idea of Ellen in Conan's spot and Jimmy in Carson's (removing Carson from TV forever - please!). Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert are great in theory, but I like them more uncensored (won't work as well on network tv as they do on late night cable).

redgie Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

CARSON DALY to replace Conesy? Are u kiddin me?? HE SUUUUUUUCKS!!!

Scott P Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:13 PM EST

Well, if they do get Jimmy Fallon as the host, they won't have to worry about getting a laugh track, since he'll be the only one laughing at all his own jokes as usual.

Brad Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon sucks and so does Carson Daly. Don't hire either one of them and hire one of these guys: Keith Olberman, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Jim Rome, Jeff Foxworthy, Jim Gaffigan, Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen Degeneres, etc.
There are so many people that would be more interesting that NBC will probably never consider. Maybe they should do what CBS did after Craig Kilborn quit. I would never have considered Craig Ferguson, but the guy is brilliant. Maybe NBC should try something that they never try and think outside the box a little bit. Don't just go to Fallon or Daly. I have a can of paint in my basement that is more entertaining than either one of them.

Kurt Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

I would assume they want to keep "Late Night" funny, in which case Jimmy Fallon would be a terrible idea.

Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

Let's pass on Jimmy Fallon and try Jon Stewart! I think he would put a great spin on such a network show with his writing team. Let's strive for something above mediocrity, which is exactly what we would get with someone like JF (or Seacrest, or Daly...)

Ed Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

I'm loving Joel McHale as the new host, but isn't he doing a new comedy on ABC this fall? I thought I read somewhere that he was.

Please not Ryan Seacreast, he is a "host-bot". He should do a show with Elizabeth from The View.

Isa Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

Joel McHale! That would be a brilliant choice! He's funny, has the evening edge which the jobs asks for and that both Jamie (too baby face) and Carson (too thin) do not have.

Todd Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

My dog would be a better choice than Jimmy Fallon. And she will work for less cash.

Jane Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

No offense to Jimmy, but he was only funny because of Tina Fey. I like the idea of a female host. Don't know who that should be, but definitely not Rosie.

Howard Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

As long as it keeps him from making "Taxi 2", I'd give him almost any job on television.

alison Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

i totally agree - Joel McHale!!

Frankie Kaufman Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon would probably be the best choice. Carson Daly is, as Mr. Fallon elequently puts it, a tool. I think we've all seen enough of Ryan Seacrest as well. Late Night needs to have a comedian host to be successful and Jimmy Fallon fits the bill.

Heather Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

I'd be fine w/Fallon taking the slot, however, I agree w/some other people here about a female host. I think it would be a nice sort of addition to the late night all boys club. Why should women on TV be stuck in daytime TV? I think there are a few female commediennes out there who could do a really good job in late night. Caroline Rhea is one that comes to mind.
But I would really prefer to see Fallon in the spot over Carson Daily. Have you ever seen his show after Conan? It's horrendous!!! There is no humor to be had there.

Shannon Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

I love something Conan once said in EW's "Stupid Questions" about Amanda Bynes taking over for him. Hahaha!
I believe he was asked to predict the future and said something along the lines of " I'll say 'Good night folks, and stay tuned for Late Night with Amanda Bynes!'" I'm pretty sure there was something about robots and a castle as well, but you get the idea.

mark in nyc Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Really? Jimmy Fallon? That guy hasnt been funny in five years....and even when he was it was marginal at best.

Ep Sato Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

I too was thinking Tina Fey'd be fun, but she's got a sweet gig with the hilarious 30 Rock. Wanda Sykes would be great, but her unsuccessful sitcom leads me to question if anyone else besides me would watch her.

tuppy Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

If Fallon takes over Conan's slot, CBS should get rid of Craig Ferguson and put someone like Seacrest -- or a woman, like Amy Poehler or Wanda Sykes -- against him, then maybe CBS could finally win a late-night slot.

lw Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

I agree with GOB. Amy or Wanda.

GOB Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

I agree it should be a female host. Amy Sedaris would certainly bring a new twist to late night. I'd also tune in for Wanda Sykes.

Stephanie Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon did a decent job with WU, and I think that he could eventually work as host of Late Night.

I also want to suggest Joel McHale from "The Soup." He's very funny and does a great job hosting on E!. NBC should be taking a look at McHale, because he has some real potential to host in this spot.

Marnie Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

I think you were looking at the wrong half of the screen there, Michelle. Tina Fey should succeed Conando.

Chaddogg Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

Seriously? Jimmy Fallon? I guy who could never get through his own damn skits without cracking up hosting a late night talk show? You've got to be kidding me. (And Daly isn't even a remote possibility).

NBC should be smart and go with someone subversive like Conan was (mainstream humor has moved towards Conan, hence his now increasing popularity)...bringing a minority back to late night would be a great idea....are y'all thinking what I'm thinking?

Dave Chappelle. Give him complete free reign to do whatever he wants. And a boatload of money to do it.

jerry Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

they are smart not to have daly move up. he's not funny. but i don't think fallon is a good choice either. what about (gasp!) a woman? amy sedaris would be an awesome choice.

Chris Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

There's only one Carson that should ever be in late night and that's Johnny. Daly is dead to the world. I've never met someone that says they watch his show. He bored me on TRL. The only thing ever exciting about him was his dating of Tara Reid.

Joe C Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

I'm with cs; Ellen is an hilarious stand-up comic, and she can conduct good interviews, too. The only thing is, she might have too good a gig right now. But I would watch her every night.

Tyler D Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

As long as Carson Daly and Ryan Seacrest don't get the slot, I'm fine with Fallon attempting to create his own late-night talk-show. In fact Fallon could even do his Carson Daly impersonation on the show, which has always been much more amusing than Daly himself. "Hi, I'm Carson Daly, the most mediocre man in America."

Ep Sato Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Fallon seems like a poor choice, but a decade ago so did Conan Obrien. Back then everyone questioned why a former Simpsons writer should be hosting a show when he'd never been on tv before. And remember when everyone was sweating a non Craig Kilbourne Daily Show? Jon Stewart took that show and TORE IT UP! I've got not much love for Fallon's post SNL career, but if he makes this show his own, he's got a chance to turn it into something really funny. Or it could turn into another Pat Sajak show

Sharlin Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

As long as Carson does not get the job. I don't care who replaces Conan.

Jyoti Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

I think part of Jimmy's charm is that he can't help but laugh at everything himself. That he clearly enjoys the joke as much as the audience. Debbie Downer anyone? Remember how hilarious it was when Jimmy was part of it, but then once he left it just wasn't that funny anymore? Well it's obvious now that Jimmy's frequent case of the giggles is what made that skit funny. None of the other players could keep a straight face.

Jimmy also has the potential to be a good talk show host simply because he's relatable. He's like your goofy brother who you can't help but smile with.

I was a fan of Carson's show when it began, when he was more into the guests than himself. He clearly enjoyed talking to these musicians and actors and the it showed to the viewer because I enjoyed watching them interact so smoothly. Cut to two years later and he changes his entire format and suddenly he's like every other would be late night host. Nothing unique about him anymore.

I stopped watching.

Dan Daoust Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

How about two hours of Conan?

nathan Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

Fallon would be alright, as long as it keeps him from doing movies.

cs Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

all those suggested successors are bad choices, in my opinion. the subject of the previous post, craig ferguson, would be better than all of them but an unlikely choice. i think it's about time they add a funny WOMAN to the mix and move ellen to late night. i think she'd be perfect there. and a worthy successor of conan.

Nomers Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

A nightly dose of Jimmy Fallon would be fine by me! NBC don't screw it up this time and bring in the right guy for the job. Conie and Jimmy every night?!?!?! Woohoo!
