Things That Make Me Die Inside (Vol. 13)

Jennifer_l Somewhat disturbing press release we got Tuesday:

JENNIFER HOLLIDAY BRINGS DREAMGIRLS EXCLUSIVELY TO E! WITH A LIVE PERFORMANCE ON THE RED CARPET AT THE OSCARS

Original Effie Will Perform "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going"
LIVE On E!'s "Countdown To The Red Carpet: The 2007 Academy Awards®" Show

Join me after the jump in shaking your heads in dismay.

So, as any good Dreamgirls fan knows, Jennifer Holliday is the original "And I Am Telling You" diva, whose performance at the 1982 Tony Awards is the stuff of legend. Beloved by musical theater students and gay men for the past 20 years, it stands as the greatest scenery-chewing, bile-spewing, gut-it-out 10 o'clock number in history. It's been imitated for years, by all sorts of people, and while the trepidation of those who love it has been somewhat assuaged by J.Hud's sparkling performance in the movie, it still stands as something sacred.

And now, the fine folks at E! — askers of inappropriate questions, assessors of hairstyles and footwear, droppers of major award trophies — have decided to dust off Ms. Holliday for one night only to perform during their Oscar preshow.

I don't know about this, PopWatchers. While I celebrate E!'s sudden (and uncharacteristic) nod to something older than Lindsay Lohan, I still feel like this is not only kind of exploitative but really, really depressing and destined to do damage to the battleship-sized memories we have of that ancient, earth-shattering rendition. I'm not saying Ms. Holliday can't pull it off... I'm wondering if she should have to.

Your thoughts? Do you think this is J.Holl's decision, or did E! make her an offer she couldn't refuse? Is it rude to J.Hud to trot her out? Can anyone be expected to perform at their best in the chaotic conditions of a red carpet? And maybe, just maybe, might we someday leave the past in the past, simple and pure and of its time, an attic of memories that we don't need to pick through looking for scraps of tin to place in the sun and call shiny?

When you search for the electronic components, try to use UTSOURCE, you can find the modules. For example, the types have http://www.utsource.net/sitemap.htm

Undoubtedly, Jennifer Holliday's original performance as Effie in the Broadway play, "Dream Girls," was and is to this day inimitable! And of course, Jennifer's original vocals on her grammy award winning song, "And I Am Telling You," stands alone as the quintessential diva aria of the past, present and future! And NO! Jennifer Hudson does not have more range than Holliday(not even in her dreams). . . however, I do feel that there isn't another artist at this time other than possibly Patti Labelle who could karaoke the song, "And I Am Telling You" better than Jennifer Hudson did in the film, "Dream Girls."
So, here's a "Thumbs Up" to you Ms. Hudson!

Teejay Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 08:17 AM EST

I didn't see E and watched the Oscars the other night and only found out that Jennifer Holliday performed this on the Red Carpet?? Outside the Awards Venue? Yep, this is tacky. and demeaning to a legendary diva like Ms Holliday. I was overjoyed to see Jen Hudson get the award - she is a most humble, beautiful person who has a huge future ahead of her and is still developing a talent that will only be bigger in years to come. I can't imagine the awesomen Jennifer Holliday being reduced to singing it as a Pre-Oscar stunt - I honestly don't think that such an astounding voice - probably the most unique voice on the planet, has had the opportunity and the rewards over the years as it truly deserves. I still remember when she won her first Grammy - she beat Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and Donna Summer for that one. I agree people should stop making comparisons between Hudson and Holliday. Thank God for both and for a song that will always be up there as one of the greatest.

JohnMichael Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 09:00 PM EST

So, this is my first post on Live Journal and I want to start it off with something that just made me ill to my stomach.

For the past few months, I have quietly sat by and watched friends "debate" the Jennifer Holliday/Jennifer Hudson paradox wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a riddle.

Who's the better Effie?

Answer: Who the hell cares?!

I loved Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls and though I never saw Ms. Holliday do her thing in the '80's...I am sure she was just as amazing in her own way. (Yes, yes, blasphemy...blah blah blah)

What gets me is how so many people who want to utter the ridiculous lines, "Well Hudson was good...but she's no Holliday." "Hudson is great in that one song but is she acting?" "Holiday would have chewed her up in her day."

Again...I don't really care either way. I just know that my $10 was well spent last Christmas Day when I saw Dreamgirls.

The rub is that Holliday no matter how good she was...well, her time was in the 80's. Today is Hudson's time and i

Naester Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

This stunt was not just rude to Hudson is was the mean act of a desperate woman and a desperate, vicious network. It is embarassingly pathetic that Holliday would allow herself to be used in this manner. She looked ridiculous and sounded awful on that roof top. I saw the play and happily join the legions of fans who were and continue to be floored by her performance. But I have also choosen to live in the present unlike Holliday. In the end the most she could have gotten out of this debacle -besides cash- is having pissed off almost anyone who could help her regain a full career. Reality check- like Hudson, love Hudson, hate Hudson she has some very powerful people in her corner from Oprah to Clive to TWO industries that are in love with her right now.
And I wont even address Holliday's insane ranting...

Laurie Mann Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

As much as I avoid E! during awards season because I dislike Joan and Melissa Rivers so much, I will watch tonight to hear Jennifer Holliday sing. She was GREAT back in the early '80s, still has a fine voice (she was on CBS Sunday Morning today) and she deserves at least a little publicity. Granted, she probably was too old to play Effie now, but it was a major shame that she was in no way invited to be involved with the Dreamgirls movie.

Alexandra Karova Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

I am just sorry that I never got to see her live, but am so excited that E! is having her on tonight! God Bless You! I am definitely watching! Whoever put this together...God is working through you and his angels will bless you for giving credit where credit is due...to the Divine Jennifer Holliday. Her volunteer work for AIDS is phenomenal, and her talent always makes me feel like the Holy Spirit is loving us all. That's just what her voice does, as does Jennifer Hudson's, but Jennifer Holiday's is better, which is hard to believe but actually true.
Please watch Holliday's You Tube videos of "I Am Telling You" and you'll know it's true.

Karova Sun, Feb 25, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

Jennifer Holiday was the greatest singer on the planet when she sang "I Am Telling You" on a PBS Special "My Favorite Broadway Leading Ladies" & on Rosie O'Donnell & on the 1982 Tony Awards. She was also an exquisite actress. I am glad all these performances can be seen on You Tube. I wish people would give her more work and am sad I missed her on E! But God Bless any place that gives her good exposure and financial appreciation for her artistic genius. I also love her for being so human and humble about suicide, weight & depression which I amd most Americans deal with being that we have an obesity epidemic according to the news. I love her & you would too if you saw any of those performances I mentioned, and so does America because Jennifer Hudson's break out performance is great & reminiscent of Jennifer Holiday's who was even better! Long Live Jennifer Holiday! Praise the Lord for her! She also has done charity work for AIDS & is a very loving soul. God Bless Her!

MEL WILLIAMS Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

I haft to say that I'm glad Jennifer Holliday is having the opportunity to sing her signature song. Although, it may seem inappropiate, it's simply away for her to reconnect with her old and new fans. Campbell if you read this let Holliday know that she still has fans out theer who love her and wish her the best.

THIS IS GREAT WE GET 2 C 2 DIVAS BELT OUT THE SAME SONG! Y R YALL COMPLAINING?

Doubleh Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 10:23 PM EST

All the hype is ridiculous because both renditions of the song are great! J-Holiday should find another way to display her displeasure instead of attempting to upstage another young, Black woman who is only getting the opportunity she herself got 24 years ago.

Miss Thang Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 08:09 PM EST

I just don't get why Jennifer Hudson hasnt sung the song LIVE! Can she do it??? This blogger offers some insight on it--> http://claycane.blogspot.com/2007/02/holliday-vs-hudson-both-scheduled-to.html

lili put Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

I agree that Holliday shouldn't do it. But, maybe if Condon had let Hudson sing the song everyone wants to hear publicly, nobody would want to listen to Holliday. People want to hear AIATY live and, for whatever reason, Condon doesn't want Hudson to do it, at least not yet. So, yeah, I think it's a stupid stunt, but I'll certainly tune in to watch her sing it.

But, also, I wish everyone would stop acting like Jennifer Hudson is some kind of superstar all of a sudden. She had one role, mainly singing, and, I thought did just an okay job of immitating Jennifer Holliday. I guess because she's been on American Idol she's somehow better than everyone else. Ugh, I hate the Idol fans. The most obnoxious fans on the Internet. Part of me wants to see anyone else win besides Hudson, because I'm so tired of the crazy Idol fans.

djm Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

Yeah, I don't think I'd mind if it didn't reak of desperate publicity. Campbell - if you truly are JHo's friend talk her out of it. Tell her to get over it and move on.

jj Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

Wow, this really shows how little class both the E! network and Miss Holliday have. I really enjoyed her performance in the original Broadway production, but now it will be forever tainted by this moronic publicity stunt

KC Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

Sorry...as one of the few who has not jumped on the JHud bandwagon & was not impressed with her alleged "acting" or her rendition of '...And I Am Telling You' (though she did a terrific job with 'I Am Changing, IMO), I say do your thing Ms. Holliday. Let the people know who the real deal is. If it wasn't for her iconic performance/never to be duplicated performance, Dreamgirls would've been long forgotten (just like Sparkle).

So I look forward to tuning in with great anticipation.

Bob G. Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

Does this mean that everytime a broadway musical is nominated for an Oscar, the original cast members get to come out on the red carpet and sing a song from the show? I don't want to hear Jennifer Holliday's version---this isn't the place. Let her sing it on the Tony Awards red carpet. I'm suprised that the Acadamy would even allow this to happen.

tk Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

I'm not sure why JHoll wasn't invited in anyway to be a part of the movie like Lorretta Devine was...but that's all water under the bridge now, JHoll turned the song upside down and she has been perfroming it on and on and on since the 80's, since JHud did such a good job with the song, JHoll should just let it go. I think it's really tacky that she would even want to sing the song on the red carpet, she's making it look cheap and tawdry & she should just get over herself, pass the torch, your time for this one song (out of millions) is gone, get a new writer and get a new band and sing a new song.....just get over yourself...it looks dumb and pathetic

soxgirl Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

Tacky! Trying to upstage Jhud for sure and it will probably backfire.

E! is an embarrassment. I'll boycott it.

Matt Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

It DOES seem like Jennifer Holliday's trying to own a role forever. Someone else did it, and did a great job with it. Time to move on. Enough of the sour grapes. How many other performances from a quarter century ago are still remembered? Most performers don't even get a glimpse of the spotlight she had then. She's so talented, I don't understand why she'd want to rehash this old stuff - why she wouldn't want to focus her efforts on the future, and on new stuff. I can see the producers not wanting her in the Dreamgirls movie, thinking it might be a distraction. (And, love her or not, she does make a lot of public noise.) They make Broadway musicals into films all the darn time without using the original cast members. You'd think someone in the entertainment industry for so long would have a thicker skin. Get back out there, Jennifer - go get a great new Broadway role! You can do it! I'd love to see you back on stage!

matchkitjohn Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

If she got a cameo in the movie then she would want lines, then more lines, and then "Hey why can't I do a song?" It would have never stopped.

matchkitjohn Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

Tom Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

I think Jennifer Holliday needs to get over herself. She complained when Whitney sang the song on an awards show, and now she's trying to move in on J-Hud's shadow. We all loved Holliday's version, but we also love J-Hud's. Holliday needs to find a new role we can love her for. Her Effie was 25 years ago. It's not 1981 anymore.

RobinG Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Let's bring Queen Elizabeth II to troll the red carpet. And why not exhume Idi Amin and display him on the carpet too. After all, all these imitators are getting nominations!

Sue Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

It's Jennifer Hudson's night. She's most likely going to get an Oscar, and if she gets it, it's really an award for singing that song. Let her have her night, E. Just because she won't be singing it at the Oscars herself (since it's not an original song up for an award) doesn't mean you should remind her that someone else sang it first, and maybe even better.

Stephen Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

Ok, Ok, while I would LOVE to hear Jennifer Holliday sing this song.. she should be singing it ON THE OSCAR STAGE and NOT on the red carpet.. Oh god, I feel terrible about this. Somebody should really listen to how absurd this is and put an end.

STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING!!

Campbell Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

J. Holl is a friend of mine and I can tell you quite honestly she was hurt that they A)Never asked her to even do a cameo in the film and B)Used her voice to promote it for over a year without any real compensation. She's still got it and will (even 25 years later) sound better than J Hud does on her best day. Does it make me feel a little icky that E! is doing this? Of course...but secretly I'm a little glad that people will be able to hear the song the way it's supposed to be sung.

Jer Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 10:20 AM EST

The main problem here is that Jennifer Holliday has been very vocal with her dismay that she wasn't invited to participate in the film in some capacity (i.e. a cameo). In recent weeks she'd seemed to change her tune, but this makes it look like she's trying to steal some of Hudson's thunder. It's in very poor taste on her part, but par for the course for the E! network.

Michael Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 10:18 AM EST

Jennifer Holliday singing this song for E at that time is as tacky and ridiculous and Barbra S. running up on a stage during a summer stock production of Funny Girl and singing at the top of her lungs over the poor girl who would be playing Fanny Brice. With all due respect to Holliday's legendary original version - demeaning, absurd and inappropriate idea - why don't they just have her walk down a staircase like Gloria Swanson and stare into the camera? Stop this insanity before it happens!

djm Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

I think it is tacky. JenHo had her moment back int he day and she needs to just let it go.

Elizabeth Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

I read an article saying that Holiday is upset because she basically shells herself out to sing this song repeatedly, but now no one is interesting in her version any more. So, yeah, I have the feeling her publicists had something to do with this.

furry_tom Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

This isn't any more exploitative than resurrecting the Police so they could suck at the Grammy's. You have it backwards though, we're the ones being exploited. Holliday's not being coerced, she chose to do this. Rather it's your fond memories of her past performance that are being exploited by E! and Holliday so that they can grab more ratings.

NineDaves Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 09:41 AM EST

Jennifer Holliday has performed the song over and over again since then, on everything from the Rosie O'Donnell Show to the 200 (1999?) Tonys. And she's never as good as she was back in '82. I'm with you EW - just leave well enough alone and let me remember her for what she was, not for what she's become.

carla Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 09:40 AM EST

As much as I'm happy to see JHud success, she did not do the song justice in my opinion. I was so let down when I saw the film (only reason I went to see the film in the first place.

Yes, indeedy let the originator sing it on the Red Carpet! It beats hearing rich folk talk about expensive clothes they didn't pay for.

Please let the original Effie do her thang. JHud shouldn't be the least bit offended given she's reaped the rewards of a great song with mediocre results at best compared to JHol

They should have Jennifer Holliday sing " And I Am Telling You". But, then get Jennifer Hudson to sing it as well. Jake Gyllenhaal will probably be at the Oscars, he could sing it. They could have an "And I Am Telling You" marathon. Two hours of the song would still be more entertaining than Ryan Seacrest asking stupid questions on the preshow.

Luke Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

Yeah, this is really tacky. But Jennifer Holiday is amazing. Her live Broadway version shown on youtube makes the movie look like kiddie stuff.

brandonk Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 08:54 AM EST

E! sucks, and all the points you bring up are valid, Whitney. Hopefully Holliday can pull it off with some style and class and Hudson won't be too offended.

Stephen Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 08:21 AM EST

As rude as this is to Jennifer Hudson (who, in my opinion, offered a bright spot to a mediocre film), I have a feeling she won't be too upset when she's clutching her little gold oscar...

Tiffany Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 08:06 AM EST

I agree with Sally, this is rude to J.Hud especially. It's her night and time to shine, Jennifer Holliday had her time to shine at the Tony's ages ago. I hope E! doesn't go through with this...

Chuck Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 08:05 AM EST

It makes me kind of sad to hear this. I love both Jennifers, but Holliday had her big break back in the 80s and now it just seems like she's not ready to give the spotlight up to anyone else. I wish she could just be happy that someone else is having their moment in the sun and be proud in the fact that NO ONE will ever be able to take away the fact that she was the first and best Effie of all time!!

TorontoTom Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 07:49 AM EST

I wish the Academy had a category called Best Adapted Song like they do in the Screenplay categories. JHud's version of this classic is amazing!

Terri D. Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

The only way this will be acceptable is if JHo gets to sweat all over Seacrest until he manages to wriggle out of her magnificent clutches and flee the red carpet (running like a little girl, of course)...

BB Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 07:33 AM EST

She has a hit with it right now on the dance charts, so maybe it's just promotional. Why don't they drag out the real Queen of England too, after all she originated the role in "The Queen"

EricMontreal22 Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 07:12 AM EST

I don't really see the problem--she sang it a few years back at the Tonys and sounded as good as usual (maybe not peak but close to) and is probably relishing the chance. It's not like she's a 90 year old grandma with no voice anymore being wheeled out...

Yeh, it's rude of E to do this and I think Jennifer Holiday offered herself to do it. The studio certainly didn't ask her to do it. She just won't go away will she?
