If I could change one thing about 'Ugly Betty'…

Categories: 'Ugly Betty', Television

Eric_l Not to be a Debbie Downer about a show I truly, madly, deeply love, but if I ran the Ugly Betty makeup department, I'd dial down the foundation, blush, and frosty pink gloss on Eric Mabius' Daniel Meade. After all, he's not the Meade sibling who just underwent gender reassignment surgery. You're with me on this one, PopWatchers, yes?

pete Sun, May 11, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

Daniels makeup is nothing compared to Betty's father's. It's unbelievable! Would somebody please tell him he looks like an effeminate jackal?

sja Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

they already put amanda in a betty-esque outfit. it was a few shows back...very funny.

"If Betty's dad is an illegal doesn't that mean his children are too"

Um, no actually. Hilda, Betty, and Justin were born in the States, which makes them legal citizens.

If your thinking was actually the case, none of us would be citizens.

jane Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 12:23 PM EST

I know I'm saying something unpopular, but if I could change something, I'd fire Eric Mabius and hire someone good looking to play Daniel Meade. Mabius does a good job, but he is way too passive to play a company president. I realize Betty is supposed to be his backbone, but come on. And besides, this show is about Betty steering through a world of people who look incredibly hot. Why is Betty more attractive than her boss? But short of recasting, I'm with the comment about too much makeup on Daniel. He looks like a scarecrow.

Amber Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

My husband and I comment on his makeup every episode. They need to tone it down!

Care Bear Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 09:59 PM EST

If I could change one thing about Ugly Betty it would be...wait I do not know I just do not like the show or any of the actors on it.I wish it would simply fade away!

Hmm Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 06:57 PM EST

If I could change one thing I would loose the story line about Betty's dad being an illegal alien. If Betty's dad is an illegal doesn't that mean his children are too and if so how could Betty get a legitimate job at MODE, and Justin go to school. I just dont get it!!

Over the weekend, I just caught up on all 5 episodes of Fugly Betty that I've collected on the DVR. I've always noticed Eric's makeup, and it is annoying!
When he was on The L Word (loved him in it but no nudie shots - whaa!) he never wore makeup and he always looked good. I don't know, maybe it's the whole New York slash fashion slash metrosexual thing making him wear so much.

P.S. I think Betty's fam should get a spin off series and move to L.A. She could doo hayr for the industry and her son could gay it up even more!

sadiesue Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

How about a dream sequence where Betty becomes the boss? She would stay the same, suddenly her style is THE style. All the assistants would have to start dressing like here, Marc & Amanda would kowtow to her (just seeing Amanda dressing "Betty" would be hilarious).

gogo Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

OMG!!!! I love the show but the bad makeup on the guys has bothered me from day one. If the can't improve the makeup then they should work on the lighting.

Ben W Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

I think that he could benefit from makeup as a lot of guys out there could but its just too heavy..I watch the show online and still see it. they could darken his foundation/powder and then the blush or bronzer wouldnt look so noticeable. Slezak u have it on the money once again.

Dan Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

Too funny!!! I was complaining about Eric's eyeliner during the entire show last week. VERY VERY annoying and distracting. Tone it down!!

it's like they want to keep the "oompa loompa" gag running.

OMG i thought I was the only one who noticed! Horrible!

Jujube Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 09:22 AM EST

Like the character, hate the obviously bad dye hair job and pale and awful make-up. VERY apparent how bad it looks on HD! They need to fix that, it can be distracting. But otherwise, like him, good in his role.

Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 08:42 AM EST

I agree that he is the weakest link. And why do they insist on making Vanessa Williams look 60? She's only in her 40's! Tone down the makeup on her, too!

Louise Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 08:13 AM EST

I noticed it for the first time on last week's episode. I think he's using the new Cargo line.

Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 04:08 AM EST

Don't forget the mascara!

Luis G. Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 01:16 AM EST

Yes.

Fatima Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 10:26 PM EST

I guess I've never noticed. I'm just realizing I've never once seen Ugly Betty on a regular TV. Because of NBC comedies,I watch this show online during the weekend. Guess I can't see it so well. I'd tell the cast to have less pixely faces!

Silv Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

What bothers me is the bad hair coloring. I swear, his hair is dyed; it has no high- or low-light, no variations in the shading, it just looks flat. His eyebrows disappear by comparison. I don't know whether they're enhancing his natural color but it currently looks "done." And watching the show on HD makes all the bad makeup show up more.

lee Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

Eric Mabius is a big part of Ugly Betty's success. He's a great actor and brings depth to what might have otherwise been a shallow character. There is delicious chemistry between Betty and Daniel.
You people have been eating too much cat food.

starchild Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

There is a sweetness and goodness about Daniel and he has great chemistry with Betty. He and Betty are a balance to all the wackiness. You can't have a show where everybody is wacky. His potential makes him attractive. I for one think Marc's clothing sucks though he does have a style.

Madeleine Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

OMG, I've ALWAYS thought his makeup job was the worse. He looks so white and with that sticky-up hair, ugh. I agree, it must cuz his character is rich.

jfms777 Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Actually, I would remove Eric Mabius along with the rouge. He is the weakest link on the show.

Chris Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Slezak, as usual you read my mind. I'm just surprised you hadn't mentioned it until now.

Jessica Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 12:59 AM EST

yeah, i def. agree. he's still cute tho!

sam Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 12:36 AM EST

I don't want to be mean, but I find it hard to believe that Eric Mabius would have women all over him (except for being rich). I think that he was miscast. The telenovellas never make this mistake--their leading men are always perfect for the role.

Jill Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 10:57 PM EST

The show is practically perfect but I have to agree on the makeup. at least on Thursday. I would make Rebecca Romjin a permanent cast member if she isn't already, too.

Jysika Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 10:45 PM EST

Honestly, I think the show is pretty much perfect and wouldn't change a thing, right now anyway.

cekade Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 10:01 PM EST

The one thing I'd change, is the name of the show. She is not ugly-I think
it is insulting to people who wear glasses or have braces.....even
Klutzy Betty would be better!

nycpiscesguy73 Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 08:52 PM EST

i would get rid of Eric Mabus all together. to me, he is the weak link of the show! and pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeaze, i pray they do not put vanessa williams in anymore dominique deveraux outfits like she had on in the 2/15 episode

Fatima Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 07:27 PM EST

Wow I didn't know Ugly Betty could go forward in time and win Emmys!

Jasper Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 07:09 PM EST

yes. I agree and I've only seen the show twice.

Slammy Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 05:32 PM EST

I'd make her Hot Betty.

Karen Thomas Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

The makeup on the Ugly Betty characters does look a little cartoonish. Is that the look they are going for???

Matthew Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

*agrees with shamrock*

I'd also make "Betty" give it's Emmy to The Office. Just awful.

hi Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

one thing i would change is the Alexis story line and the Fey storyline hope both of these storylines are removed....in a good/creative way

Shamrock Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

If I could change one thing about 'Ugly Betty'....I'd take it off the air.

Sally Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 09:01 AM EST

The murder line is getting tedious and where are they going with the Alexis storyline? I wish she would have been held under wraps a little longer.

Simeon Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 04:00 AM EST

Slezak, you are spot on again!! Daniel is the only UB character whose wardobe is out of sync! I know lots of wealthy trust-fund boys and they do NOT dress like that!!

Erin Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 11:49 PM EST

I'd ask the costume designer to stop putting him in purple shirts and ties. Seriously, count them next week. He's always wearing some variation on pink or purple.

Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 11:20 PM EST

Maybe they purposely try to make the makeup of former OC cast members bad so that we can identify them easier?

Victor Perez Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 11:17 PM EST

Heya Slezak! i too did notice the caked-on foundation on Eric Mabius last night.. Of course, all that went off my radar when 'The Chin' (Lucy Liu) ripped his shirt open..
(fans self frantically) My word!..

Tyler Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

Wow. You can tell they have nothing else to do with their time when they start bringing stuff like this up. Nice.

Laura Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

Drop the storyline about the murder. We just want funny lines, Henry and Betty to hook up, and more of Betty's nephew; he's the best!!

Merideth Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 09:19 PM EST

It's not just Daniel Meade. It's just as bad, if not worse on Bradford Meade (Alan Dale). It looks like open casket make-up.

Dara Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 08:40 PM EST

I totally agree!!! How about the eyeliner? Maybe since the makeup artists aren't allowed to make Betty look too pretty they go overboard on Daniel.

Travis Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

I can't believe you mentioned that! I was just talking about it during last nights telecast. This is why I always check in on EW.

Marnie Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 06:49 PM EST

Agreed, Micheal... But where are the pictures of your dancing on a table!!!!
