Would you see a Tom Cruise/Ben Stiller comedy?

Tom_l Oh, Tom Cruise, that comedian. He's made us laugh so many times in recent years. Jumping on couches. Setting up home with the star of First Daughter. Wielding the word "glib" like a battle ax.

Well, it seems, he's ready to be wacky again — though this time he actually means it: TMZ is reporting today that Cruise may appear alongside Ben Stiller in The Hardy Men, an updated version of the Hardy Boys mysteries, which finds the junior crime solvers all growns up. Funny. Now, get this: While his personal life has devolved into a bit of a punchline in recent years, Cruise has never starred in a bona fide comedy before. (Yes, there was that Austin Powers cameo, and, no, it doesn't count. Neither do Jerry Maguire and Risky Business.) So this is something of a first.

And, you know what? I applaud it. I've been waiting for a big-screen teaming of Cruise and Stiller ever since their hilarious "Tom Crooze" sketch at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. ("Let's call it Kickin' Impossible!" Brilliant.) The action star proved the perfect foil by showing a willingness to make fun of himself. Which is a big reason why a comedy like The Hardy Men sounds like a good idea for a star who's spent so much time lately being laughed at. You know, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Moreover, maybe muted domestic box office for Mission: Impossible 3 ($134 million) means a bit of a career shift is in order. Still, I wonder: Is this a mission you're willing to accept?

I'd see a movie with Ben Stiller but with the weird no way! Maybe Tom should make a movie with him playing L.R.H.. It can be called "An idiot who worships an idiot."

Paulito Tue, Feb 13, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

Isn't everybody overlooking the fact that Tom Cruise is already planing his own comedy movie, about Scientology - with Victoria Becham as an alien? sounds funny enough to me!

Love Ben Stiller. PLEASE do not burden him with the awful Tom Cruise whose self-righteousness and phony laugh and good humor make my skin crawl.

This all seems very forced. Tom Cruise painted himself into a corner with the whole crazy thing and now is conspiring with his handlers on how to get back into the good graces of the public so that he can make a few more hundred million dollars. Kinda sad. It's too bad his situation can't be dealt with like he's a fading athlete. If that were so, he'd retire and everyone would kinda forget how insane he is until he reappears at an autograph session in 15 years with a foil hat to protect his thoughts. Duh.

Maybe Ben Stiller could play a seemingly sweet guy who gets overwhelmed in a situation that's out of his control. For inspiration, they could rent any of his last 439 movies.

Blech.

Well, as someone who unfortunately has a RX for prozac, I am put off by Tom Cruise. That aside, I don't think he can do comedy. Does anyone remember when that reporter squirted water in his face, and he went ape s***? I do. He can't take a joke, even a bad one.

Francis Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

Cruise as Scientology's next Christ is comedic material. Stiller in another buddy remake not so much.

Why not make them Siamese twins attached at the ankles? The general public can watch them successfully trip over each over and fail as comedy's 2000 version of Martin and Lewis.

Until, mega-man Spielberg decides a prequel to Jurassic Park needs to be made. They can play two overachieving scientists, with dyslexia, who stumble upon some dino DNA.

Jujube Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

Can't stand Ben Stiller or Tom Cruise and together, even worse...yuck! Me thinks Tommy boy is desperate.

Phil Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

Rosie is a Lesbian, Tom appreciated her smothering because he is a Homo too. And I still think Suri isn't his, its Chris Klein's. The TomKat marriage and birth could be Scientology's greatest illusion ever. If the TRUTH is ever fully reveled, NOW THAT WOULD BE ONE HELL OF A DARK COMEDY. As far as Tom doing a comedy with Ben Stiller? Don't seeing it being much of a success eventhough the inevitable pairing to promote said film will be a shot as co-hosts of SNL. The greatest comedic role Cruise COULD have successfully parlayed was the new Joker in the upcmoming Dark Knight, but that role has already been landed by Heath Ledger. Yeah, chew on THAT. That would be the only somewhat "believable" comedic role for Mr. Cruise, that is outside the current circus that's his personal life!

Deb Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

If it's anything like "Meet the Parents" then I'm gonna look forward to that. Mr. Cruise has an understated appreciation of comedy. He was always gracious to Rosie who smothered him when he visited her talk show, and he was great at the MTV sketch he did with Stiller about 7 yrs ago. I will keep an open mind and see before I judge.

tam Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

No, no, no. Not interested.
Tom Cruise is a walking joke, he can't be funny. A friend of mine has been saying forever that Tom Cruise is the Devil in disguise. This is a belief she's held well before the couch jumping. To me, he might not be the devil - that gives him way too much power. But, he is well past his best before date. Everything he does reeks of desperation - an attempt to validate himself in a way that is insincere. Tom Cruise as a Hardy Boy? I think he's hitting rock bottom. Does that mean he'll go away for good soon???

Stephanie Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Trw: Zoolander was funny, but it was not because of Ben Snorer. He is a good writer, and an *eh* actor.

Dave Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

I think this is a great idea. Ben Stiller's shown he is great at comedy and can work with a variety of costars beyond the Frat Pack (DeNiro, Hoffman, Williams, etc). And Tom Cruise could use a change of direction as well as a movie he doesn't have to carry on his own. This could work.

Rev. O.J. Flow Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

Call me crazy, but if they go in a remotely STARSKY & HUTCH direction with this, it could be a stitch. Have Ben as the younger Joe who always gets overshadowed by The Cruise as Frank?? I'm intrigued. :)

Ginger Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Tom Who ??? He makes me SICK :)

Nicole Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

To quote the wise sage W. Houston, hell to the no. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to watch any Tom Cruise movie that comes out at all, ever. I can go back and still (somewhat) enjoy oldies like A Few Good Men and Top Gun, but anything released in the last few years and in the future is tainted with crazy, so I just can't do it. When I look at him now, all I see is "crazy alien-worshipper who lobotomized a promising young actress and made her his wife and won't stop until all of Hollywood is firmly attached to an e-meter".

Liza Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

Oh man! How is he going to pull off the "smelling f@rt" face in a comedy?

aa Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

i watched jerry maguire the other day and it actually made me miss tom cruise. if he can let go and poke fun at himself the hardy men should be a really good movie. if not it should be funny just watching ben stiller try way too hard.

Ed Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

I'm turning 34 years old this year and my face is getting just as fat as Tom's when I smile. It depresses me to look at him because it reminds me of how old I'm getting. The same with Brad Pitt, his face is stretching with age.

P.S. Fatima - I love you - I don't know who you are but with a name like that and an attitude to boot, I bet you're a lot of fun.

Tyler D Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 10:17 AM EST

I don't know whether or not Jerry Maguire qualifies as a comedy or not (I don't really care how we classify and pigeonhole movies), but it was hilarious. I think Crowe's film succeeded simply because it spent most of it's time taking away Cruise dignity as we watched his "perfect" character crash back down to earth. Cruise can be funny whenever he's willing to humiliate himself on screen. Meanwhile, humiliating himself in real life is less funny and more pathetic.

fredric Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

I'd much rather see a Hardy BOYS movie. Or Encyclopedia Brown. No offense to Ben Stiller, but Tom Cruise does not a good comedy make.

maya Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 09:34 AM EST

I get scared when I see Tom Cruise's face.

Heather Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 09:27 AM EST

Wow. Another reason to hate Tom Cruise. And to think, I used to like him. But he massacred the Mission: Impossible franchise, and now he plans on ruining another of my childhood loves? I'm just going to cuddle Parker Stevenson and ignore Tom ever said the words.

Craig Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 09:11 AM EST

Smart idea! It will make a lot of money. Even Robert De Niro's top money-making movies were with Stiller.

Mike Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 09:06 AM EST

Tom Cruise? Ben Stiller? together? talk about desperation!

trw1570 Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 12:30 AM EST

Um, if Jerry Maguire isn't a comedy then what is it? It was funnier than anything Ben Stiller's done.

Joel Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

I would love to see Cruise team up with Stiller. Maybe not the Hardy Men, which does sound like more of a skit than anything else (it was already done as well as it could be with raging clues), but I could definitely see something between these two guys working well.

Jaded1 Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 10:59 PM EST

Yes Sara....the Hardly Men will both have raging clues....

Stephanie Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 10:28 PM EST

The last comedy Tom Cruise did was Jerry Maguire, and I would not call that movie a comedy. Risky Business was decent, but that was what, when he was twenty-two?

Fatima Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 09:41 PM EST

To be fair Mak, I've ALWAYS hated Tom Cruise, even when he was Hollywood's darling boy.

Miranda Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

Kind of playing it fast and loose with the word "hilarious"...

Sara Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 09:00 PM EST

I guess the idea gave him a raging clue...

Noodles Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 08:22 PM EST

I think Cruise would be wise to get away from the action thing and try a comedy, but a smart comedy. Who wants to see a big-screen version of "The Hardy Boys," let alone with 40-something Hardy Boys. The prospect of Cruise and Stiller pairing is fine for a little skit on MTV, but not a feature-length film. Or Cruise should try an entertaining thriller like "The Firm" again, but not this. Hell to the No!

Jane Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 08:19 PM EST

Would I see Tom Cruise in a comedy with anyone? I don't even want to see him in a coffin. Looking at him kills my heart. Theoretically, a comedy would be a great choice for him and would do a lot to save his career, but it would have to be one freaking good comedy. The only way it would work is to cast Tom as a real loser who stays a loser because if he does it with hubris, then you've got another "Starsky & Hutch" on your hands.

EM Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 08:01 PM EST

not no, but hell no....

Nathan Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 07:56 PM EST

Sure I'd go, it would likely be a funny movie. I really don't care what stars say or do outside of their films.
Mel Gibson hates Jewish people, I liked Apocalypto. Matt McConaughey does nothing wrong in his life, but his movies suck really bad. I like to judge them on their work.

Mak Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

Sure, in theory. If it's good. I loved Mission: Impossible III despite knowing that Tom Cruise is a wacko. I don't think it affects has on-screen persona all that much. Russell Crowe chucks telephones at hotel clerks and beats people up in bars if they look at him the wrong way and people still love him (myself included), so I don't get why Tom Cruise is suddenly Public Enemy Number 1 for jumping on couches and acting like an idiot about psychology. There's a long history of celebrities acting unbecoming of their star status. In this tabloid age it seems a lot more scandalous than it really is, but I'm pretty sick of all the headlines about what people do in their private lives.

No TC Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

Please no! But I could be biased. I don't want to see Tom Cruise in anything, let alone a comedy.

Fatima Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

You're telling me I get not one, but TWO of Hollywood's most annoying!? Where do I sign up. Sign up for a suicide booth that is.

Bill Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 05:53 PM EST

Tom's acting range consists of only 2 gears..."intense" and "cocky." He doesn't shift into comedy or ironic very well. One of the hardest scenes to watch in recent years was his "show me the money" embarrassment from JERRY MAGUIRE. He is not believeable doing something funny. HE's not funny. He's scary.

Robert Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

Let me get this straight. We're going to put the craziest man in Hollywood in the same movie with the guy who will do any movie if it means a large paycheck for him? Wow...well, I might've wanted to see it back in 1997, but now? Sorry. Then again, I had no interest in either War of the Worlds or Night at the Museum. Based on box office grosses, I'm probably in the minority.
