What song would you choose for an 'Idol' audition?

Jan 30, 2007, 12:00 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Music, Reality TV

Bow_lIf Andy Roddick were auditioning for American Idol, he'd select a number by Bananarama or Menudo. Katie Couric? She'd bust out a little Linda Ronstadt -- "Faithless Love," to be specific. And Neil Patrick Harris would sing "Rocket Man." At least that's what all of 'em told People magazine recently. That article sort of made me realize, deep down, probably 90 percent of us have mulled what song we'd perform if we got dragged out in front of Simon, Paula, and Randy.

Me, well, I'm not gonna pretend I'm so cool that I haven't occasionally mistaken a karaoke stage for the Kodak Theatre, nor will I hold back on sharing my Idol audition track: "Let's Dance" by David Bowie (pictured). Think about it. The range isn't all that demanding, there are plenty of pauses where an untrained warbler like me can catch his breath, and most important, who's gonna be able to resist that bit about "THE SERIOUS MOONLIGHT!"? It's a guaranteed winner. Now tell me: Which song is going to get you your golden ticket?

chris Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:40 PM EST

i have finally moved over to jorden fan. I believe that you can make the grade. I just pray that you don't become a spoild brat like alot of others in the music business.
I will be cheering for from my home i hope you can hear me. Go Girl.

pam Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

All i have to say is Sanguai is HORRIBLE i don't know who is voting for him but as far as i am concerned he should have never even made it to Hollywood i like chris and melinda

Ron Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 10:39 PM EST

Sanjaya! It has been fun, and it a bundle of laughs! Now it's time to get serious, get get serious! you can't compete with the professionals. Time to go home.

Teresa Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 03:40 AM EST

WHY IS SANJAYA still on, Gina is a lot better than he is, he should have been one of the first to go. When you look at the ratings, Gina was 4th and he is 9th, what is up with that?????? Oh and if I was trying out, it would be She's Got You by Patsy Cline, Summertime from I think Billy Stewart or from Porgy and Bess. I also do Time after Time by Lauper and can do a great Tim McGraw, or John Micheal Montgromery.
Teresa

rachel koehler Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:54 AM EST

Sanjaya? What a joke - I will never watch IDOL again! Thanks for what is considered by some entertainment.

elaine Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 08:10 PM EST

I think there should be some restrictions on the dress code for the idols,Hayley's dress on 4\3 was too revealing, what are we teaching our teenagers who want to be stars?

jerry Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 06:09 AM EST

If Chris Sligh wants to win;do some songs from meatloaf, would be perfect for him.

Kat Thu, Mar 22, 2007 at 05:58 PM EST

I would do "This is a Man's World".

kla94 Thu, Mar 22, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

if i were aditioning for American Idol i would sing "You Give Me Fever" becuase i think i can sing that fairly well

John W Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

I would audition with "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas. This is one of the best songs ever written...a timeless classic.

arizona scrambled Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 01:12 AM EST

I would like to see someone pull off "Air that I breath" beautifully. I vote for Jordin...Awesome and going FAR

Tue, Mar 20, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

Lakisha should sing The Weather Girls song, It's raining men. She would blow everyone away on that night.

jerome Mon, Mar 12, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

A guy singing a girl's song works (IE "you really made it your own.") Simon loves sappy 70's & 80's ballads, seen in his A&R'ing of Westlife in the UK - so, I'd sing Olivia's I HOLNESTLY LOVE YOU.

leelee Sun, Mar 11, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

There is nothing better than a song that tears you apart emotionally - if I could sing, I would choose: 'Every time I See Your Picture I Cry' by Luba; 'Stand Tall' by Burton Cummings; 'Beth' by Kiss; 'China in Your Hand' by The Thompson Twins.

HoneyDove Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 04:25 PM EST

I am a Country Girl and adore the late Patsy Cline. I would try to Wow them with a heartfelt

"Crazy"

StaC Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

"Gimme Some Time" by Dan Fogleburg

Adam Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

Saving all my love for you. ( definatly to show off dinamics and the ability to flip your voice seemlessly.)

Rob A Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

Desperado!

Yup, I have it down. :)

fearsomepenguin Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

I would definitely sing "Stormy Weather".

Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

i would sing till

Monica Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

I would have to choose "Fly like a bird" By Nelly Fertado.

Liz Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

"Sweet Dreams" by Patsy Cline. It's such a classic, and it drips with emotion. Nothing like a little heatache to really sell a song!

NYC Girl Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

I've never watched AI (yes, you read that correctly!) and even I've thought about it-- "On My Own" from Les Miz.

yawn Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

"At Last" by Etta James

Evie Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

Great question!!! I would sing "Out Tonight" from RENT :)

Renee Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

I have a feeling Nelly Furtado was being sarcastic when she chose Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

My personal choice? Did I Shave My Legs For This? by Deana Carter. Not a big country fan but oh how I love me some Deana Carter.

Nancy Walker Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

I just hope they eliminate "unchained Melody" from the lineup because, no one sings it quite like Bobby Hatfield. I would like to hear a fine rendition of "Your are everything" by the Stylistics, great song!

Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

"Signed, Sealed, Delivered" (even though "Superstition" is my favorite Stevie Wonder song, that just wouldn't sound the same without the funky bass line).

plushpuppy Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 10:25 PM EST

Big shot by billy joel or Come together by the Beatles because neither of them require much singing. Also I would dedicate Big Shot to simon.

Mary Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 10:06 PM EST

I had a dream the other night I auditioned with "Killing Me Softly", but I'd prefer to do either "Something to Talk About" by Bonnie Raitt, "My Favorite Mistake" by Sheryl Crow, or "Come To My Window" by Melissa Etheridge...that's more my voice style.

Dean Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

"Reflections of My Life" by The Marmalade or "The Air That I Breathe" by The Hollies.(Simon loves the early '70's)

abp Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:48 PM EST

P.S. Auriana, I agree! That's a terrific choice: "Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly/I gotta love one man 'til I die...." : )

abp Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

"Yesterday" by the Beatles. Lovely tune, a classic, nice range. I great audition song, methinks!

Cherry Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:41 PM EST

I'd out-do scooter girl and come in singing Queen's "Bicycle Race" (on a bicycle of course).

bb Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:22 PM EST

Van Morrison's "Moondance" because I just love that song!

Alicia W. Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

"Stronger Than Me" by Amy Winehouse or "I Don't Know Why I Love You" by The Brand New Heavies. Both are in my range and wouldn't have been sung to death.

eddie Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 05:58 PM EST

Mariah Carey's: "Without You or Love Take's Time". With Randy Jackson there, I'll make it straight to the Finals! Not that I can sing like Mariah, but I'll try my best.

Sarah Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Even though I am a total Seth Cohen Rock girl (totally stole that from EW), my audition would have to be a country standard. Stand by Your Man, Walkin' After Midnight, or I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. Flight 309 to Tennessee by Shelley West would be awesome. All the songs I can't do on karaoke because no one has ever heard of them. Love the Crystal Gayle shout-out.

Bexter Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 05:18 PM EST

I'm totally obsessed with 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' sung by Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole. IZ rocks!

Dana J Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 05:10 PM EST

"To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn...fo sho!!

Dana J Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 05:10 PM EST

"To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn...fo sho!!

Christina Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 04:46 PM EST

"With or Without You"- U2 or "Good Mother"- Jann Arden

Jean Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

Total Eclipse of the Heart. It would show my inner fire.

Miriam Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

A little Pat Benatar, for sure. Say, "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" or "Invincible"

Matthew Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" is totally what I would sing. And then I would twirl in circles with a scarf over my head!

Dreams unwind, love's a state of mind . . .

Julie Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

"Down on My Knees" by Trisha Yearwood or "This is Love" by Mary Chapin Carpenter. This is complete and utter fantasy since I can't sing for crap.

Greg Angelo Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

I once sang "Let's Dance" at a Bowie tribute for that very reason -- it's easy to sing, and yeah, even a neophyte can put over that "serious moonlight" business.

ericalina Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

"levon" by elton john, for sure.

and ellipsian, "you and i both" is one of my most favorite songs, good call!

Sean Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

In The Still Of The Night

Madeleine Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

"Just Call Me Angel in the Morning" (can't remember who sings it!

Dave Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

I'd go with Material Girl or Like a Prayer to show my devotion to Madonna and prove that, yes, guys can sing those too. Then, when the judges are finished laughing their asses off, I'd probably go with a Billy Joel classic, only because I know all of his lyrics by heart.

Chris Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

What Slezak...no comments on Elliot's debut CD coming out in March, as announced on the American Idol website? As a fellow Elliot fan, I expected you would have this scoop! (Sorry for this post being off subject!)

hulahoop Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison or The Warrior by Scandal. When I'm in the car alone, I sound better than Patti Smyth any day!

Dylan Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

I'm leaning towards "Wishing Well" or "Who's Loving You?" by Terence Trent D'arby. (Although the second song is a remake) Good song choices... Probably get Randy excited... Maybe even Paula, since they're both from the same time! Hell, it's a tri-friggin-fecta since Terence has the British accent going on, he'll get Simon's interest, too! The perfect choices!!

furry_tom Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

How about OMC's "How Bizarre"? Bonus points for quoting Undeclared when Simon disses you. "I like it. It's catchy."

Janean Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

Laurie, Brass In Pocket was going to be my choice! I'll have to go with Plan B--Sheryl Crow, "Strong Enough."

Stephanie Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

Oh I have one, Case of you- Diana Krall.

Laurie Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

Brass in Pocket by The Pretenders. I can't sing and she talks half the song - so I'm in!!

PS Nelly was being ironic.

Becky Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

"Fancy" by Reba McEntire, and I'd wear a red dress with velvet trimmin' that fit me good, cut clean up to my hip-- gots to get on TV somehow!!

Stephanie Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

I am a blusey alto so I would have to go with what I could pull off:

Hello, it's me/I saw the light-Todd Rundgren (and if I made it to Idol, Bang on the drum)

Yesterday- Beatles

When did things go so wrong- Smithereens

Move it on over-Hank Williams

tuppy Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

bonnie raitt, something to talk about

Nose Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin (she probably didn't write it, but she made it famous) or Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

Auriana Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

My choices tend to be limited as I'm an Alto 2 but I always thought of "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man" from Show Boat or either "Hunter" or "White Flag" by Dido.

Ellipsian Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

Jason Mraz's criminally overlooked non-hit single "You and I Both". Or maybe I'd just go all mainstream and do "The Remedy"; they both show off my range and are hella fun ta sing.

Matt Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

"Yoshime Battles the Pink Robots" by the Flaming Lips... I would just want to see the reaction to someone singing "Don't let those robots eat me."

Nadia Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

You're So Vain by Carly Simon or When Horsepower Meant What It Said by Sandi Thom

Heather Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

If I could sing (I do believe Roddick's full quote is more precisely who I am), I'd have to sing some Elvis. Preferrably something like "Suspicious Minds".

Icc Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

Pink Houses by John (Cougar) Mellencamp. Definitely.

jason Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

"what about me" by moving pictures. it's a song about self-empowerment, triumphing over adversity, it has a huge build at the bridge, but the range is do-able. i would DEFINITELY make paula cry

Padraig Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

"Cool Change" by the Little River Band. So easy for a guy to sing.

wayne Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang(My Baby Shot Me Down)"

furry_tom Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

I'd either do Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" or Spinal Tap's Big Bottom.

Lucy Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

"California Lady" from the cult movie "Track of the Moon Beast"

Laura Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

...or triple post. I don't know how that happened. *ducks sheepishly*

Ceballos Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

For me, Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young"...
I'm a little surprised by Andy Roddick's choice. I would've guessed he'd go with "I Just Got My Ass Handed to Me By Roger Federer (Again!)"

Laura Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

Sorry for the double post!

daisyj Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

I'd love to bust out with a little Foreigner (maybe some "I Don't Want to Live Without You"?) but given my vocal range I think I might have to stick with something simpler. Like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat".

Laura Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Better Off Alone by Katharine McPhee (written by Austin Carroll) - great song. Or Open Arms.

I love how Nelly Furtado said she'd sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to be different. Um, hello? Katharine McPhee? Oh, and then Sarah Krueger this year? I have no problem with her not watching the show, but if you're going to talk like you do, you might want to be informed first, lol.

Laura Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Brandon H Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

The "Sweetest Thing" by U2 since it allows for a lot of flexibility, singing wise. It is also not one of U2's most commericial songs (I never understood why they rerecorded it) but is still popular enough.

Laura Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

Sean Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

"I Can't Get Next to You," as arranged by Al Green.

brandonk Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

David Bowie doesn't look like he's doing such a great job of lipsynching in that video.

Matt Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

Nice semi-obscure Bowie track. You made my day Slezak! My choice would be "Take Me With You" by Prince.

Paul U. Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

"Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" by Crystal Gayle...it's just so showy and over the top, but also in my range!

Jeanna Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

"If I Fall..." by the Dixie Chicks.
