Tim Gunn balances out Bravo's Paula Abdul mess

Jan 12, 2007, 06:39 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', 'Project Runway', Reality TV, Television

Gunn_l This just in from the Department of Yin and Yang: Bravo has picked up a pair of new reality series -- from the opposite ends of the taste-sanity spectrum.

On one hand, there's Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, in which the natty Project Runway guru (pictured) will be sort of a one-man Queer Eye, bringing chic and elegance to the sartorially challenged. (This is appropriate, seeing as Bravo also announced Queer Eye for the Straight Guy will end its run this summer; no word on whether the network has decided to play it smart and pay Gunn whatever the hell he wants to return for season four of Project Runway.)

And then -- brace yourselves -- the network has also said yes to Hey Paula, a crazy-eye view of American Idol judge Paula Abdul at work and play. If you haven't yet seen Abdul's recent televised appearances to promote Idol, click here and here. Girlfriend does more (actual) bobbing and weaving than a badly bruised boxer in the tenth round, and with her speech slurred, her wig askew, and her facial expressions ranging from "la-la!" to "mommy-the-bad-lady-scares-me!," Paula comes off more like the deranged drag queen you try to avoid on the sidewalk on Sunday morning than a panelist on America's highest-rated television series. But, as Paula slurs it herself, "Any publicity is good publicity! You gotta learn to eat it up and embrace it!" (TMZ, by the way, got an unintentionally hilarious explanation from Paula's rep: The Seattle station had "technical problems with the satellite and her sound was dropped not once but twice. Paula was in a small room by herself with only a cameraman. Paula was distracted and confused by the station dropping the sound. She did not know what was going on," he said.)

In other words, this is going to be the best TV show in the history of ever. Especially if there are scenes of Paula in a small room by herself with a cameraman. And her sound gets dropped. And she doesn't know what's going on. In fact, I call dibs on the TV Watch right now.

Wait, so Bravo will give him his own reality showcase, but they won't give him a raise (presumably what's being asked for...who knows it could be an easier schedule) to continue appearing on "Project Runway". This needs to be straightened out. Pronto!

Sorry EW, but it annoys me the way you don't update this site over the weekend, and apparently only the PopWatch writers have to work today.
Entertainment doesn't stop on the weekends or holidays.

Celebs need to start coming up with something new in order to make news; being interviewed drunk or intoxicated is OLD. Britney, Lindsy and Paris have played it out.

John Mon, Jan 15, 2007 at 02:40 AM EST

She is did a few lines and drank alot.......without a doubt. No painkillers or any of that. (She got the lockjaw effect.) Her people should have canceled the interview. I hope she gets help.....12 step program to start

Thank you Nicholas. I agree. She should be applauded, for being as busy as she is & being a Chronic Pain Patient. I know it is a living hell daily. I think people are just heartless.

nicholas robinson Sun, Jan 14, 2007 at 11:53 PM EST

She is definitely on painkillers of some sort. When you're stinking drunk you can't think as fast as she was, but on pain killers (or barbiturates) you can.

However, her constant movement reminded me of Parkinson's, although when one is high on painkillers it's difficult to remain upright.

"In a room by herself with a cameraman"

Isn't that an oxymoron???

Pam Sun, Jan 14, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

I agree, Tim is the heart & soul of Project Runway. I love him!

kayla Sun, Jan 14, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

Paula is trying to regain her long lost fame, currently supported by the thinnest of threads, thanks to "American Idol" and to her recent appearance, totally drunk on a Fox channel. And now the news that she will have her own reality: how desperate can BRAVO and she be? I got three words for her: "Being Bobby Brown"...

Home-girl has Lost The Plot....

Grow up America! I am a chronic pain patient, as is Paula. So what, so she has to take pain meds to function. I am lucky to be able to sit up everyday. I am proud that she is so productive with what she must experience everyday. People should be praising her. Please walk a mile in a person's shoes before you judge them. I have.

I personally think its irrelevant whether Tim Gunn comes back or not to Project Runway. This show is about the designers coming up with unique ideas for clothes on short time frames. I think they could have any fashion teacher come in and say “I like the direction this is going in.” I mean I don’t get why so many people would be so depressed if Tim wasn’t there. Is it just that they have gotten use to him? I have watched the show all three seasons and not once have I ever thought oh I just cant wait to see what Tim Gunn's going to say tonight.

skbnwinters Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 07:09 PM EST

Tim Gunn? Oh, please.

Devin Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

I hope Paula's show is as big of a train wreck as that interview was. Seriously!

"Good morning everybody!"

Sorry about Queer Eye's end EXCEPT now Ted Allen is free to replace Gail - I need-to-say-ick-for-emphasis on Top Chef. Please let Bravo make this switch. Gail is another 'critic' who confuses critiquing with negativity. She sucks the energy right out of Top Chef every time she comes on screen. Ted Allen has been delightful for each appearance on the show and has provided astute, articulate & decisive criticism with a balance of praise for what he likes.

wow. was she ever drunk in that clip.
embarrassing.

ceejay Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

Wow! Are we really this short of talent, that BRAVO has to resort to having a reality with a one-hit has-been who is even unable to speak coherently while "judging" in American Idol? That's bad!

Ms Daisy Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

Tim Gunn = class
Paula Abdul = Trash

'nuff said.

V.M.L. Sat, Jan 13, 2007 at 03:12 AM EST

Yay! More Tim Gunn action! I hope he comes back on Project Runway!

Mozz Fri, Jan 12, 2007 at 07:40 PM EST

Tim Gunn, not coming back to Project Runway, is Project Runway allowed back without Tim... I mean... the model chick is hot.. when she's not pregnant... but Tim is the spine of that show.
