'The O.C.': Sandy Cohen just punched Hercules!

Angry_sandy_l Hercules: Ryan's my son.
Sandy: NOT ANYMORE!

Every so often, The O.C. delivers my favorite kind of episode -- a "The Cohens are a FAMILY!" episode -- and I think this one may have been the best yet. I've tried for years to focus on other elements of the show, but I cannot get enough of Ryan and Sandy subtly reminding each other of their beautiful, two-tough-guys-in-a-mansion bond. In fact, I need someone to make a YouTube video of every Ryan/Sandy moment ever, so I can sit at work and cry while grinning all day. Seriously, I can send you a list of "moment suggestions" just from memory. Do it!

Plenty of these moments occurred last night. My favorite was after Frank left the house and Ryan said "My dad's right here" to Sandy. Ohhhh, my heart! Say it again, Ryan! And he did, seven times, thanks to the power of rewind. If I was more high-tech I'd have produced a short, looping movie of just that one line to put in place of the already-pretty-righteous photo of Sandy at left. Or even better, the movie could alternate between that and Julie/Summer's dry-heaving attemps to pronounce the "ch" sound in Hebrew. It's so cute -- Summer needs a mom; Julie misses her daughter. Challah!

Anyway, the big drama this week was that Frank lied about having lung cancer to lure Ryan into associating with him. I loved the uber-cheesy soap opera moment when Kirsten said "Sandy, Frank is dying" right before commerical break. Julie was in the background with a vacant stare, Sandy faked acting stricken by the news, and there was some tinny, pseudo-orchestral music to boot. Then finally, like a moth to a flame burned by the fire, this happened. Join me: Awwww!

Chris Brown showed up, ostensibly to play a "smart" band geek who has problems enunciating, but really to promote his new Fox-produced movie, Stomp the Yard. You can't fool me, Fox! Also: I hate you.

Seth and Summer... just, ew. I had a hard time sitting through their scenes, to be honest. Wouldn't it have been easier if Seth had interpreted Ryan's suggestion to "smoke her out" in his season 3 fashion and just gotten her stoned? (Again?) The paranoia alone would nix the idea in seconds. Actually, maybe not -- they'd probably end up agreeing their love was as infinite as the ocean (or the Cohens' pool), finalizing the dinner menu for the reception, and feeding each other cookie dough. But I'd still rather have watched that.

What did you guys think?

I will never see O.C. again, because if I watch the O.C. I have to cry all the time. Now its over forever and ever and ever and now the O.C. Kirsten Cohen died for me.

I watched this show from the beginning and I was growing bored with it last year. When the new season started I watched it out of loyalty and, to my surprise and glee, the show was great again. The last show was one of the best ever, that perfect combination of belly laughs and aw shucks moments. I am saddened by its cancellation. While I will defend Fox for having the guts to greenlight such series as The OC, 24, Keen Eddie...and, in some cases, having patience to give a superior series a chance to find its audience, the network can be a bit schizophrenic. They can give an Arrested Development 3 years with terrible ratings and cancel Keen Eddie after what, 8 episodes with NO promotion. When this season began, what TV fan couldn't see the impending cancellation of The OC? Or a better question is what fan couldn't see Fox seeing the impending cancellation? Fox didn't even try to improve things, leaving it against Grey's and CSI. Let's just hope the CW will carry the torch.

I have been waiting for this moment for 4 seasons, and it happens the day they cancel the show. I thought for sure Ryan fianlly realizing completely he was achoen would happen last season, they hinted at it a few times but dropped the ball for whatever you want to call season 3. Thank You for finally giving us the Dad moment without a Your or Seth's in front of it. Noe Kirstan and Seth turn. If not a season five please a full 22 episodes this season to good to go out in February

Shannon Sun, Jan 7, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

I love the OC I cant believe they are taking it off. This is the best show since 90210.

shana Sun, Jan 7, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

I enjoyed the episode but find that now that its cancelled, I look at the actors while watching and just wonder if they'll get work when its gone. I really hope Adam Brody gets some good stuff, movies, a new show, whatever. I realize his range is about zero, you watch his older stuff and its all very Seth, but its a fun one-trick pony. Vince Vaughn can only play one character and its still entertaining. Anyway, I'd like to see if Ben McKenzie can do something different. I'll have to rent Junebug. Maybe Sandy will go back to Broadway. Julie should go to some other soap. Willa Ford should just go finish high school.

im sick to my stomach knowing that FOX has cancelled the one true show i enjoy to watch. i hate fox and will never watch another show on their network again.

the o.c. was the heart of all television shows and was something i turned to when feeling down. this is disgraceful

THOM Sun, Jan 7, 2007 at 12:55 AM EST

theBIGE, i forgot to say something about that, but when it happens i told my brother how funny it was that they did that. His character in Junebug was so much different than Ryan.

theBigE Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

No one has mentioned the significance of the TV program the family is watching at the end - it's about Meerkats! In Ben McKenzie's movie "Junebug," his loser character unsuccessfully tries to tape a program on TV for his pregnant wife. The program was about her favorite animal - the meerkat.

THOM Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 05:36 PM EST

Everything was going so great in this episode until... CHRIS BROWN. WTF. Terrible stunt casting. He's suprisingly an even weaker actor than he is a singer. He was supposedly the nerdy smart band geek, but his vocabulary wasnt exactly impressive, and his enunciation made me think there may be a chance English for him is a second language. Also, there was absolutely no chemistry between he and Kaitlin. None. And hes not even a looker. Come on FOX, if you're going to cast boring characters, at least make them fun to look at.

A Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

Are you kidding?!?! Fox cancelled the show now that it's finally good again?!?! Killing Marissa was the best thing that ever happened in Orange County. Now the show can have a sense of humor again like those fantastic scenes of Summer and Seth trying to smoke each other out. I'm so bummed!

Tim Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

I HATE FOX! I HATE FOX! I HATE FOX! Do they really think another show is going to do better going up against C.S.I. and Greys Anatomy? At least The O.C. has a built in loyal audience. Some new show in that slot will get killed. And it is extra sad that this has been the best season yet and Fox hasn't even kind of tried to promote. Screw you Peter Ligori and Screw You Fox.

Lorenzo Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 10:12 PM EST

BC and Melissa, I'm, like, 90% sure that it was Johnny's dad, not Ryan's. And speaking bad characters that died, how can you people feel sad for Mischa, er, I mean Marissa? The only thing that girl knew how to emote was the word "hey".

Melissa Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 09:22 PM EST

BC the one you were talking about that episode. I think that was Ryan's uncle or something but I am not totaly sure. Last year I hated Taylor and I am starting to like her even more now! I think the Ryan/Taylor thing is so cute! I hate that the OC will be cancelled. I have never liked a show so much before and just hate when they are not on for a few weeks. The Summer/Seth thing is cute! I am sad I just don't want it to end. I mean yes it did suck when Marissa died but they have made the show good even though she is not there!

Maeve Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 08:38 PM EST

I also get really misty-eyed when the Cohens and Ryan refer to themselves as family. And I was watching last night and thinking I wasn't ready for their story to be over.
I hate you, FOX!
Meanwhile, does anyone know whether the CW will actually pick this up?

karoline Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

Another great episode. The witty dialogue keeps coming. Summer even said "Frack!" - a great homage to those of us weirdos who watch both the OC and Battlestar Galactica - love it! While I'm bummed out that the show's been cancelled, I'm kind of happy to see it go out on a strong note. Wouldn't want to see it limp off into the Newport sunset.

karen Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

i think they shouldnt stop makin the OC cuz that show was all i watched it every thursday, i have no idea y they cancelled the show i think that this show was more popular than any other show on fox.........

Kris Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

I KNOW RIGHT! I totally loved this ep! I didn't even mind the awkward Seth Summer stuff, cracked me up. The Julie and Summer exchange was too hilarious! Taylor just gets better with every ep, I love how nervous she was just wanting to be there for Ryan! I will miss it dearly! Although, i do have to say one thing... what was up with Julie and Frank kissing? what was the point of that?

Vicky Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 05:21 PM EST

When they all sit on the couch at the end of the episode, I just kinda sighed and thought about how much I'll miss this show. I don't have the DVD sets yet, but I'm thinking I'll be watching the first three seasons soon enough.

Raegan Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 05:17 PM EST

Great episode. The last scene made me verklempt. Also, I hate FOX!

Sarah Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

This episode was hilarious!! Summer going "bridezilla on his ass"? There were at least 4 lines in this episode that had me hysterically laughing. Just in time for cancellation:(

Emilee Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

BC, the episode you're talking about is when Ryan went to get some money from Johnny the surfer's dad, and then got beat up. So, last night was the first time we met Ryan's dad.

Jarett Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

The Summer/Julie "chutzpah" moment was one of my favorite OC moments ever! And it's refreshing to know I am not the only one who gets a little choked up to see Lil' orphan Ryan calling Sandy his father....plus, I think Pancakes and Summer's cross-country adventures would be an excellent reality show for FOX's Fall 07 lineup!!!!

BC Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

Someone has to help me here, I swear there was an episode, maybe last year, where they supposedly met Ryan's father, and he sure wasn't Hercules! What am I getting confused here? They went somewhere to meet some guy who worked in a garage, Ryan got an envelope of money from him for something...but not before the guy beat him up...does anyone but me remember this? And why do I think it was supposed to be Ryan's dad? Who was it? Help!! Oh yeah, and FOX, you suck!!

Robert Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Does anyone else think it's possible that Peter Gallagher is trying to be an action star, and begged Josh Schwartz to come up with a scene where he hits someone?

"Come on, Josh, please.... I want to be in Terminator 6 as the middle aged version of John Connor. I just need to prove to producers that I'm tough, and not just the sensitive guy with the unique eyebrows. We need to find someone who everyone agrees is big and tough. Then let me hit him. It'll be great! Hey, why not that Hercules guy? He's available, and probably will be cheap!"

thwarted Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

I already had sort of a mini-crush on Sandy, but man, he was SO hot after that punch. Whoa!
