Hollywood's least-coveted award nominations

Stone_l Thank God for the Razzies. In these self-serious, awards-heavy months, it's so refreshing to have something as silly -- yet completely dead on -- as the Golden Raspberry Awards, which offer prizes for the year's worst movies and performances. Some of the categories are just fantastic -- Worst Remake or Rip-Off, Worst Excuse for a Family Film, etc.

Leading the nominations are Sharon Stone comeback vehicle (Not!) Basic Instinct 2 (pictured) and the Wayans Brothers' most recent attempt to secure a place in hell, Little Man. Alongside those two in the Worst Picture category are Bloodrayne, Wicker Man, and Lady in the Water. It's my humble opinion that Lady in the Water should win hands down. The difference here is that, as opposed to the other four movies, in which everyone involved probably know they were making something awful, M. Night Shyamalan truly, truly thought he was doing something great. (If you find this hard to believe, pick up Michael Bamberger's hagiographic book about the making of the movie, The Man Who Heard Voices. It really makes Shyamalan look bad.) I'm not going to lie, I walked out of the movie three-fourths of the way through. I was embarrassed to be watching it, and embarrassed for everyone around me. I hope never to hear the word "narf" again.

Going down the rest of the noms, I think Uwe Boll (generally acknowledged as the worst living director of non-pornographic films) is a shoo-in for Bloodrayne. Worst Screen Couple? It's between Sharon Stone's breasts and Nicolas Cage and his bear suit. And while Kate Bosworth is only nominated once for Worst Supporting Actress (for Superman Returns), while Kristin Chenoweth was nominated for three movies, Bosworth ruined what could have been something great. You're no Lois Lane, Kate.

Look at the list, PopWatchers. Who or what do you think deserves a Razzie? Any obvious oversights?

Kristin Chenoweth is an amazing actress and singer who is a Tony winner after all. I think that her transition from Broadway to Hollywood is rough and she's taking anything she can get.

Mozz, Poseidon did land a nomination for Worst Remake or Rip-off. The field was just too crowded for worst picture consideration.
Let's get a chant going for Worst Screen Couple. Bear suit! Bear suit! Bear suit!

Kristen Chenowith is amazing stage actress (and an even more amazing singer) but she seems to have trouble picking good movies. Might be all about the money...

Superman Returns for sheer disappointment, with both leads getting it (I missed Christopher Reeve more after watching this one), plus Happy Feet for Worst Animated Feature. The turn that this movie takes about 2/3 the way in is downright wrong for kids and adults.

What I find interesting is who's NOT nominated. Used to be whenever Sylvester Stallone made a movie it was an automatic Razzie nom. Now he and his "Rocky Balboa" have been passed over by the Golden Raspberry Foundation. I guess this means Sly is finally getting his cred back - al least until Rambo 4 comes out.

You hope to never hear 'Narf' again? What would Pinky say?

Hey, "V for Vendetta" wasn't a bad movie!

Anyway, nominating Stone and her lop-sided boobs seems very harsh, even if the movie sucked.

anyone associated with 'V for Vendetta'

I wholeheartedly agree that Kate Bosworth was seriously miscast as Lois Lane. Still, part of me thinks that Superman Returns would've still been a tepid film with a convincing Lois Lane.

Mozz Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 11:13 PM EST

Hey, where's the nominations for POSEIDON... don't they have a category for Best Unintentional Comedy of the year, cause that movie made me laught like nobody's business.

"Superman Returns" was truly awful. I'm sorry - but Erica Durance IS "Lois Lane." And the kids on "Smallville" do Superman with style!

So how can anyone support sludge like "Borat" when truly amazing comedies like "Scrubs" and "The Office" reign supreme ...on the small screen?

The id and I - "Can you send half of my blogging paycheck to my Ma back in Smallville-?"

What about The Hills Have Eyes? I know there is some sentimental remake value to some people, but it was still the worst film I saw all year. Hands down. Give me Sharon Stone over that garbage any day.

Sorry to say, but worst on screen duo should be Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane in the Producers. Talk about talking a great movie (the original anyway) and overacting the crap out of it. I walked out, and I haven't done that since who knows when. On that note, has MB made a decent movie since taking that day off in the '80s?

Let's review--That dumb xmas movie he just made with Drunky Divito? Crap. The Cable Man? Crap. Stepford Wives? Crap. Crapzilla? Crap.

Ok, he was in Glory, but he was far from the best thing about that pic, and I'm talking to you Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.

Thank god someone pointed out the crap that was Kate Bosworth in "Superman Returns". Yes she was miscast, but so was Katie Holmes in "Batman Begins", and Holmes managed to turn it around and give a pretty solid performance.
Bosworth was just awful. This chick acting like she's in high school has a kid and a Pulitzer Prize? YEAH RIGHT.

Usually I hate the Razzies. Instead of actually nominating the worst films of the years, the Razzies try to be funny and attention getting by deflating big egos and nominating big stars with so-so performances in bad movies. Rarely do they actually nominate the worst. This is why Jennifer Lopez gets nominated in Jersey Girl despite only being on screen for a few minutes. It sure is fun to pick on J.Lo, but also, lazy.

This year, they FINALLY seemed to get things right.

Dalya Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

While I agree with the assessment of "Lady in the Water", don't get all down on "narf" just because M. Night Shyamalan decided to co-opt it for his horrendous movie.

Narf is, and will always truly be the beloved catchphrase of Pinky from "Pinky and the Brain", one of the greatest animated series of all time.

Juba Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Ok, Cheno should not be up for Razzies. She is a great actress who is getting stuck with god awful movies. Her agent is the one that needs to be nominated.

Mark Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

although i vehemently disagree with you about Lady in the Water being the Worst Movie (that title should go to Pirates of the Caribbean 2), i wholeheartedly agree with you about Kate Bosworth being a God awful Lois Lane. she was so horribly miscast i didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Parker Posey would have made a MUCH better Lois.

Vicky Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

Oh Nicolas Cage and that bear suit. I personally love when he screams "Killing me won't save your god damn honey!!!" Oh and I just recently saw Lady and the Water and it was pretty awful. I don't understand why the characters all went along with some "narf" from a mystical world. I'd be like "Who is this chick and why is she always wet and naked???" I'd probably call the cops on the apartment manager (Paul Giamatti).

aramis Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

You honestly think the deliciously vulturisitic bunch that comes up these "nominations" would actually forget some films. "Little Man", "Basic Instinct 2", "Bloodrayne"...sounds like they really thought about this. But where are the Razz noms for "Pirates of the Carribean 2"? That piece of crap movie should be in the running for something. "Largest Grossing Pile of Donkey Doo"? And to think, they're making a part three!
