PopWatch Word of the Day: Monkeys!

Jan 10, 2007, 10:13 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Apropos of Nothing

Okay, so either I've just received a flash of divine inspiration, or my antibiotic is making me woozy, but no matter the cause, I hereby declare that the PopWatch Word of the Day is MONKEYS!

Now, it's not just me, PopWatchers: All across the Internet, signs point to our fine simian friends. The good folks at Everlasting Blört have a link to Monkey Punch Dinosaur, a collection of artwork featuring -- you guessed it -- monkeys punching dinosaurs. I'm rather fond of the "Tragi-Comic!" rendition, although I suspect the "minimalist" version is most likely to find its way to a museum near you.

There's also monkey business (sorry) going on at BoingBoing, where you can read the fascinating "TSA guidelines for 'monkey helpers.'" (Seriously.) I'm still grappling with the idea that "the inspection process may require that the handler take off the monkey’s diaper as part of the visual inspection." (Insert silent shudder here.)

And, finally, what's more fun than a barrel of monkeys? (Bad-dum, bum!) Why, a YouTube search for everyone's favorite primates, that's what. If you do nothing else today, I implore you to click here, and see if you can avoid guffawing during this 11-second monkey-canine showdown. (I predict ABC will have the duo signed to a development deal by week's end.) It's also amusing to watch monkeys with mirrors, and monkeys tormenting tigers.

Am I on to something here? Oh, come on, it's useless to resist. On the count of three…one, two, three, MONKEYS!

Hey, and today I'm turning in my dissertation on monkey behavior! You got your finger on the pulse as always, Michael....

Whoa, too creepy-- I was just thinking about monkeys as I was driving to work today. Seriously, it was like, "This moron is driving his Porshe convertable 63 mph in the fast lane... Should I have soup for lunch?... Monkeys are funny... Okay, I'm so passing this guy."

Are you controlling my thoughts, Mr. Slezak?

since you brought up the topic, "The Class" this week featured a subplot involving 'monkey wine.' I sense a conspiracy to make the monkey the "It" animal of 2007.

Your preschooler reads PopWatch!

Jennifer Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

This is weird - I just picked my 4 yr old up from preschool and the first thing he told me was that they sang "5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed".

So, if someone says or types the word 'monkey' are we supposed to go apes--- like in PeeWee's Playhouse or something? :)
