Fightin' Dwight Schrute

Categories: 'The Office', Games, Reality TV

PopWatch has not yet confirmed the delicious rumor that both Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams will be directing episodes of The Office. I hope it's true; I'd love to see Dwight, armed with his goose-carving knife and gaydar wand, combating vampires and/or polar bears. Until then, I'll settle for having Dwight fight another scary, undead creature, Donald Trump, in NBC.com's Apprentice/Office battling bobbleheads game. (Thanks to reader Mike Morrison, a.k.a. the PopWatch Star Wars Virgin, for the boxing-businessmen tip.)

UPDATE: Awesome! NBC Universal has confirmed to EW's Dan Snierson that Whedon and Abrams are indeed both directing episodes of The Office. Watch for them to air around late February.

Larry Charles is a director who has helmed countless episodes of Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and the Borat movie.

Mark Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Who the heck is Larry Charles? You mean Larry DAVID?!

"I think anyone from the Curb Your Enthusiasm crew could easily do The Office (I think Larry Charles from Seinfeld is one of their main guys)"

The truly dark mash up would Joss directing an episode of "My Name is Earl". I find an interesting symmetry between "Firefly" and "Earl".

UKStevieB Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 06:57 PM EST

After Joss the only other director I would like to see on this show is Christopher Guest.

Aramis has got it! Gina Torres as an Amargosa-like character who scares Michael Scott and into submission and who plots all the officeworkers against each other. JJ Abrams would then have her turn out to be a spy for Staples, giving the show's sponsor a "pos-men" and all of us reason to smile.

Chaddogg, I am not sure if flashbacks would work in this show. The whole premise of The Office is that it is a supposed to be a documentary crew filming the lives of people working in an office. The camera can only see things that happen (they can't see into people's minds) plus for the most part it is only handheld cameras (no crane or aerial shots). There are no sound effects and there is no sound track, unless it is music the characters are listening to. Unless the documentary crew was there filming the day Jim met Pam they wouldn't be able to show it.

Chaddogg Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

Well, Abrams could do a "Lost"-esque Office episode....you know, full of character flashbacks (Pam's first time meeting Jim, Dwight's interview with Dunder Mifflin). Tremendous opportunities there...

I think AngKnee is write directing doesn't necessarily mean writing. And based on the format of the Office how much control will the directors really have. Is Abrhams going to try and show the end of the episode and then start the episode "72 hours earlier"?

major blogger faux pas, popwatch! how can you mention michael morrison without pointing people towards his delightful blog?!

Oops. It just occurred to me I didn't say where Joss' comment was.

I think anyone from the Curb Your Enthusiasm crew could easily do The Office (I think Larry Charles from Seinfeld is one of their main guys) since they're similarly filmed and acted. However, it'd be cool to see what J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon can bring to the table, given how different their shows are. And I totally agree with Chaddogg that Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith could do some innovative things with current TV shows. Just think what a Tarantino-directed ep of Desperate Housewives could be like.

Chaddogg Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

What other directors would be awesome with "The Office"?

Seeing the great work he did on ER years ago, and CSI recently, I really want to see Quentin Tarantino direct an episode of The Office, or Kevin Smith (imagine the pop-culture references in those episodes!) Of course, I'm also dying for Tarantino to direct episodes of 24, House, Lost, and Heroes, so he'll have a busy TV guest directing schedule if I'm in charge....

How about Larry David directing an episode?

Aramis Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

Okay, I HATE this new posting format on Popwatch. I can't review my comment and correct those damn TYPOS! I can't help it if my fantastically intelligent brains works faster than my slow ass fingertips! GRRRRRR.

AngKnee Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

Direct doesn't mean write, though, does it? And the show can't veer from mock-documentary. So the coolness lies where exactly? (I love The Office just the way it is.)

Aramis Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 10:51 AM EST

Ep - I'm going to bounce off your comment. I'd like a see Gina Torres (a la her Jasmine "Angel" role) vs. Donald Trump show down. To vicious monsters duking it out, with the victor swallowing the loser whole. Castmembers of 'The Office' will play the civilians standing in awe of the raging battle of evil vs. evil. I definitely watch that schit!

Kim Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

If you look under the Jan 8th posts regarding this rumour, he posts:

Yes, people, it's true. I am the ideal mate.

Does this mean cameos by the 'Firefly' crew on the Office? Adam Baldwin would be money as Jim's mean older brother.
