Breaking News: 'Survivor' and the Fiji coup d'etat

Categories: Current Affairs, Reality TV

13012__jeff_l The folks who run Survivor (including host Jeff Probst, pictured) may have encountered more twists and drama than they bargained for when a coup erupted on Fiji today -- where the popular CBS reality show is currently filming its 14th season (to begin airing in early 2007). The military seized control of the capital, but not of the million-dollar game show, which, according to an e-mail sent to EW from a Survivor producer, remains in production. More info to come shortly.

Fiji has a coup every few years--and generally, everyone there knows just how important tourism is to its economy. I'll bet they leave 'Survivor' alone. They're not savages; this is a political matter, not a social uprising.

Artic survivor would not work in the winter. You would have to be so much more knowledgeable about survival tactics for those conditions. I live in an extremely cold climate in winter, and it wouldn't work here. Is Ozzy really that visually stimulating in a bathing suit anyway?

This is such a relief to hear. I have a friend who is on this season right now and everyone has been worried about her. So look for Kenia Puertas to kick some butt on S14! You know we are rooting for you girl!

After 12 Survivors, I don't think ratings would drop for lack of bare chests. I really think that the American public would be able to take one season, just one season, of a cold weather Survivor.

I think that it would so completely change the nature of the game, the survival skills, the challenges, etc. people would watch.

Are we so sex-starved that we watch Survivor just for the odd glimpse of bare flesh?

Arctic Survivor would not work. Part of the draw is the scantily clad contestants. How visually stimulating would Ozzy be in a Parka?

Survivor has to do another island if they want to continue with the exile island. Without an island how would they do exile?

I can't belive this. Survivor is being set YET AGAIN in a South Pacific island??? No wonder ratings are dropping. What's next, Survivor Waikiki? Survivor Bora Bora????

If Survivor wants go back to basics and bring back more viewers, why not to a really exotic place? Like the jungles of Papua New Guinea? Or the mountains of Pakistan? Or how a cold weather place, that would bring a whole new set of challenges.

I love Survivor, but other than Guatemala, all they have done over the last several versions is island hop around the Pacific! Boring!

According to Wikipedia, Fiji is comprised of 322 islands of which 106 are permanently inhabited, and 522 islets. So I'm guessing the Survivor cast is far removed from the coup.
