Embarassing Screw-Up Gazette: Afternoon Edition

Dec 4, 2006, 04:56 PM | by Gilbert Cruz

Categories: 'American Idol', Music, Reality TV

It's the holidays, the one time of the year I allow myself to feel, and my heart reaches out in different but equally genuine ways to both Jessica Simpson and Clay Aiken.

Let's take Aiken first because his is the susbtantially less egregious incident. You can click here to see Clay performing "All is Well" and botching a high note TWICE to the sound of both applause and audience guffaws. While Stereogum recommends the 3:40 mark, the moment really comes around 3:55. It's funny the first two times, but afterwards, it's nothing more than watching someone embarassing themselves, which always makes me feel awkward (don't get me started on Borat).

Thankfully, though, there doesn't seem to be a clip of Simpson's gaffe (unless CBS cruelly decides not to edit this out when they broadcast the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 26). Performing in front of Steven Spielberg, Dolly Parton and Smokey Robinson, Simpson stopped in the middle of singing "Nine to Five" and suddenly walked off stage, later returning in tears. Why? Maybe because after a year of being hounded by tabloid dogs, she managed to mess up what I can imagine is one of her favorite songs (and a foot stomping good one at that) in front of the president, one of the nation's greatest film directors, and the iconic woman who wrote and popularized the song in the first place. I'm surprised she even came back on stage. So, poor Jessica and Clay (the first and last time I'll write that).

CLAY AS YOUNG AND UN-EXPERIENCE HE IS
PROVED THAT HE CAN SING DEPENDING OF THE SONG CHOICE. NAME ME ONE SINGER IN HIS STARTING DAYS OF HIS/HER CAREER THAT DID NOT HAVE A BAD PERFORMANCE ONCE OR TWICE. REMEMBER WE ARE JUST HUMAN AND I KNOW EVERYBODY HAVE GOT THE FREEDOM TO GIVE HIS/HER OPINION BUT THANK "GOD" WE ARE MADE TO DIFFER.

Came back to say I saw three of Clay's concerts this past weekend and he was amazing! No voice problem at all. He was funny and engaging with the audiences.

But what was most interesting is the many people who had never seen him were totally amazed. All of those I spoke with completely enjoyed the concert and were amazed by his humor and beautiful voice. One man said to me "I just closed my eyes and could not believe what I heard", he was wonderful".

Again go see him just once, you might be surprised. He is the real deal and no phoney (spelling?). Plus he had them rolling in the isles with his jokes!

Tas:
I have watched moms who have killed their children pretend to be grief-stricken. I am not saying that Nick did not love Jessica, I am saying none of us knows that for sure. His family is going to stick up for him-I hope, because that is what families usually do. And you are given a break.

Nancy Walker Fri, Dec 8, 2006 at 07:55 PM EST

Al you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but please get Josh Groban's name correct. He is an excellent singer! I was not aware that he had been on any reality show. Would you care to share where he appeared? As far as Clay goes, he does have a good voice, unfortunately he has made some bad career choices. And please let us know where you are going to be showcasing your talent.

pk Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 06:50 PM EST

Al, I appreciate your opinion, truly I do. First, it doesn't matter where a singer is discovered, many greats were discovered on Amateur hour shows, like American Idol.

I have seen many great singers in person, Billy Joel, Elton John, Dione Warwick, The Beatles, Paul McCartney, The Temptations.. the list goes on. But while I enjoyed all of them. I have to admit I have REALLY enjoy Clay's concerts. I have seen him in person about several times.

You may not like him and that is okay. But that kid has some kind of magic when he is on stage that is amazing. Unless you have actually seen him in person on stage than you really can't appreciate the talent he has. Forget the tabloids, for the cover album, just once go see him and you just may be surprised.

Any attempt to make fun of Clay Aitken makes my day a little bit better!

Those are the kind of performances you are going to get when you idolize someone based on singing a few karaoke songs for a game show.

I will never until my dying day understand the Clay mania that people have, but if you are going to pay good, hard earned money to see a reality show competitor make a fool of himself, then good luck to you.

I propose that from now on, Clay Aitken, Josh Grobin and Il Divo should all just merge into one group and save us multiple bouts of pain!

pk Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 05:37 PM EST

Sounds like Clay had a rough opening night. But from reviews and videos since, they are raving about the concert. The man has ALWAYS sang on key if nothing else. So give the guy and break, everyone is aloud to mess up once in a while! Tough crowd, if we can't forgive a mistake now and then. And the crowd was not laughing at him they were laughing with him. He's not afraid to admit he is not perfect.

What amazes me is how much controversey this man causes no matter what it is. Go to a show, if you don't like it, then you can complain. If you are not paying for a ticket then what do you care?

Anna Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

Well, I nearly fell asleep before I even got to the part where Aiken messed up. Except for a few notes around the 2 minute mark, none of it sounded good.

It's great if Clay brings joy and laughter to people but why can't he do that and sing well at the same time? I just rewatched Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" video where he was able to bring joy and laughter without making people's ears bleed.

I felt kind of bad for the Dion family since it wasn't their fault that things got messed up. It wasn't a very good song though.

Lily Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 04:07 PM EST

I wonder if Jessica did a little jig before getting off the stage and later blame it on Gastric reflux

Liza Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 04:03 PM EST

If you guys wanna see something really funny, go see this clip. Celine Dion's family sang live on a french TV show, to honor their mother. DISASTEROUS!

What happened to the clip on You Tube?

Tammie Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 12:10 PM EST

Clay is one of the very few singers that doesn't lip sync or use electronics to make him sound better. So mistakes happen. I admire that. You may never hear Justin Timberlake mess up because it's hard to crack on a note when you're lip syncing. I forgive Clay for not being like Ashlee Simpson.

Tas Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 10:10 AM EST

JuJu;
Unless Nick Lachey is a boldfaced liar, he did love Jess. I watched several interviews with him on MTV and VH-I, when he was making his CD. I felt he was sincere, and I don't think his acting is good enough to pull off those tears. His family members also reiterated how much he loved her.

Give me a break!!! I don't base my opinions solely on heresay, or unsubstantiated claims.

El Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 09:21 AM EST

Aparently Jessica was crying b/c she is a friend of that "Prison Break" actor who was in the car crash and she had been told about the accident just before. Hence the crying. (A young passenger died in that car accident--potentially the PB actor's fault as driver) My radio station reported on this this morning.

Juju Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 09:02 AM EST

Taz:
You do not know if Nick really loved Jessica. All you are looking at is what is presented to the public. There are two sides to every story, a flipped side to the pancake.....
As far as Clay goes, his voice is good, but unfortunately, has not made wise choices lately about his career.

Ep Sato Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 07:55 AM EST

How strange. I actually feel a moment of genuine sympathy for Jessica Simpson. Please check my temperature.

May not like her, but it's still a bummer she screwed up a song that is hard not to love. Fortunately, the Kennedy center gives ou this award every year so she can come back and give it another try.

Tas Tue, Dec 5, 2006 at 12:34 AM EST

I saw the clip of Jessica making a total fool of herself on Entertainment Tonight. This only solidifies the fact that she cannot sing, which she showed earlier this year with her "layrengitis" when promoting her CD.
I want to feel sorry for her, but she has showed the public nothing but a talent for self-promotion. Can't act, can't sing, dumped a man who truly loved her; one word - KARMA!

Mary Alice Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 11:13 PM EST

I thought he did great. And, the first time the audience was laughing with him not at him. He is so cute and he looked like he was having fun. So get off his back.

Becky Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 09:27 PM EST

Jessica was most likely intimidated by the fact that she was in the midst of REAL talent....her 'celebrity' is not indicitive of talent, only that she's a product of media hype. She cannot compete with genuine ability....

Alice Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 09:26 PM EST

And what's with Jessica holding her stomach? I saw a clip on MSNBC. It's bad!

derw Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 09:19 PM EST

Oh one more thing, check out the YouTube of "Is he a comic or singer". REALLY funny, that is why many fans come because he is so funny and doesn't take too much seriously. That is real fun of his concerts. Take a look and you will see why they enjoy him. That is the best part of the concerts so much fun and laughter. He makes fun of himself and the fans and they all enjoy it.

derw Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 09:07 PM EST

Okay it is more than about the song. He said right from the beginning of this tour that that song was going to be hard for him to nail every night. Very tough for him. Not sure why he chose it. But if you look at last nights performance he nailed it. What is more important is that he inspires the crowd and they were behind him all the way. Inspire is the key word.

Not only dose he inspire but he brings joy and laughter to people. What more can you ask. Don't be a music critic but appreciate what he brings to people's lives that should be enough. If you are not a fan don't spoil it for those who are. We all have a music favorites and this should not be about bashing Clay or anyone else. If the people who want to see him enjoy it that should be enough.

I will see him perform this weekend and will let you know if his performance was worth it or just the simple joy he might bring in his humor and song.

I saw the vid and it was as bad as reported. To heck with the high note his lower range is horrendous ansd off key.

The next night was only notable that he managed to scream the last note. Pitiful. I don't know what happened but this is NOT the voice I heard sing 'Solitare' in AI.

And he's gotten pudgy, too.

Tricia Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 06:42 PM EST

WOW! This is worth hearing -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVZb1opZMQY

That Clay clip was painfully long, but the ending was so worth it.

Bindi Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 06:33 PM EST

Don't worry about Clay. Check out his performance of the same song the next night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVZb1opZMQY

Josh Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 06:02 PM EST

There must be a clip of JS somewhere, as we had a news story on this that showed video (though I wasn't paying much attention to what aspects they showed).

Tom Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 05:49 PM EST

LOL! Clay sounded awful! How sad is it when the audience laughs at you?

will holston Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 05:12 PM EST

i must know nothing about singing b/c that didn't sound awful to me. just middling clay aiken
