Again, Sarah Michelle Gellar is a toon hero's sidekick

101025__tmnt_l Growing up, my younger brother was obsessed to two things: Transformers and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This, then, has been an excellent week of nostalgia for him: First the Transformers movie trailer — which he said was "okay, though the Transformers are too shiny" and look like "a visual rip-off of Lego's Bionicles" (being a non-techie, I'm taking his word for it) -- and now, some news on the new TMNT casting front. Although the turtles themselves will be voiced by unknowns, Sarah Michelle Gellar will provide the vocals for TV reporter April O'Neill, The Fantastic Four's Chris Evans will be Casey Jones, Zhang Ziyi (or Ziyi Zhang -- however Americans choose to print it) wil be baddie Karai, and just for the heck of it, Kevin Smith will cameo as a diner chef. (Trailers for the the all-CGI film, which opens March 23, are at the TMNT website.)

Poor Sarah Michelle. Her last two films tanked and were virtually indistinguishable from each other, and her next, January's animated Happily N'Ever After, doesn't look like such a winner either. Plus, January? Even six-year-olds know that's the month movies go to die. That's not to decry Ms. Gellar's taste in animated features, however: she's previously done episodes of King of the Hill, The Simpsons, and Robot Chicken. What say you, PopWatchers, on this bit of vocal casting?

Okay she can't be doing Buffy stuff all the time. I saw TMNT and thought it was pretty cool. But as for the animation departmen this isn't the last of her. It's said that she is gonna use her voice as Alice in the movie Alice, based off American McGee's Alice. I can't wait for that one. But this is notthe last of Sarah Michelle Gellar. ((At least it's better than the Grude. I quickly got bored with that movie.))

Sarah is such an underrated actress. Anyone who's sat through Buffy knows this! She just needs a good character, script and not have to carry everyone else through her movies.

SMG...something about her is annoying, no matter what role she plays. I'm not surprised her career is not hot. She's Buffy and that's about it (like Jennifer Aniton who can't escape Rachel).

There are MANY more actresses in her age group (Rachel McAdams, Reece Witherspoon, ect), who are ten times more appealing to watch than SMG and who can actually act!

To chris & lis, I believe the comment about the January opening was concering the other release Sarah provides voice work in, HAPPILY N'EVER AFTER, not TMNT.

I love SMG, and sadly yes, the Grudge 2 sucked, but out of al her work, I never really liked the first Grudge either. I even saw the Return. What a terribly dark movie. My only hope is that the limited & cheap locales saved them money in that portion of their budgets since it made nothing at the box office.

My only hope is SMG returns as Buffy Summers in a movie sometime soon. Fanboys & girls across the world share my prayers of hope...

Re: Chris regarding a March release date. Rottentomatoes.com lists it as a January 5th release

a part of me feels that the current state of smg's career is karma for bailing on buffy and the other part thinks its karma for scooby-doo. having said that i would be first in line to see her bitchy side again; she was great in cruel intentions and as kendall hart on all my children.

SMG, is one of the most underrated actresses in hollywood. she's going through a transitional period at the moment, and hell, i would do crap movies for a paycheck, beats what I have to do now to pay the rent. But I believe she will wow people one of these days with a role that will leave everyone speechless, and with any hope I would have written it. :)

I HEART SMG, and she's providing a voice, not appearing in H'NE-A, alright.
I really hope Sony will release Southland Tales, and I'm curious about The Air I Breathe. The Girl's Guide to... should prove a departure. Let's not bag on her re: Buffy - that's very 2003, and it's like she alone made the decision to stop doing the show.

Since SMG quite trying to even pretend to act in 2001, I think the current state of her career explains itself (or maybe it's a case of she never could act. She simply managed to hide that with soap opera tears and teenaged histrionics early in her career but once required to do anything remotely subtle it was revealed that there wasn't enough talent there to do so).

SMG quits Buffy for crap like the Grudge movies and Grudge wannabes? She needs to either fire her agent or beg, plead, whine to Joss Whedon to take her back.

When the first TMNT movie came put, my brother, who was about ten or eleven at the time, begged me to take him. I had to sit through corny jokes (okay, I did laugh at the Kodak moment comment) and bad acting. But he loved it and I survived.

Sarah needs to do something like Cruel Intentions again. She's fantastic in that movie. Enough of this heroine nice crap. Even though I love her as Buffy, I want to see her play the b*tch!

chris Thu, Dec 21, 2006 at 11:53 AM EST

Um, you do realize the movie comes out in MARCH, not January, right?

paige Thu, Dec 21, 2006 at 11:52 AM EST

can't blame her for needing a paycheck... plus, shes got to support her husband. and id rather see her do bad horror movies than bad rom-coms.

Diane Thu, Dec 21, 2006 at 11:22 AM EST

Love SMG as Buffy. I almost hope all her movies tank so she'll maybe get behind and support a Buffy movie. (And please God no more Scooby Doo movies!)
