Justin Timberlake gets boxed in on 'SNL'

Dec 18, 2006, 02:53 PM | by Gilbert Cruz

Categories: Saturday Night Live

144041__dib_l If you havent yet seen "D--k in a Box" (pictured, featuring digital clip master Andy Samberg and guest host Justin Timberlake), the genius new digital short from this past weekend's Saturday Night Live, please click here for the unbleeped version. (Clip is very NSFW; children and others with more delicate sensibilities ought to pass.) Everything about this clip is amazing: the dead-on send-up of Color Me Badd (down to the goatees, ridiculous suits and even the way the last syllables of the chorus go increasingly up), Timberlake hanging from a basketball hoop with a box on his crotch, and the simple, yet necessary instructions ("One, cut a hole in the box. Two, put your junk in the box."). What a way for JT to cap off what has been a fantastic year for him. Can SNL just focus on digital shorts from now on? We're in the aughts now; kill the "live."

yomama Tue, Sep 11, 2007 at 07:23 AM EST

TamTam, you are an idiot! The skit is hilarious though.

steph Mon, Apr 9, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

justin is my hero, i think he is great, ive always been in love with him but when i saw him on snl, i fell in love with him even more!!! It was hilarious, the soup sketch, the bee gees, and the d**k in a box were all brilliant, i even taped it and keep watching it over again lol. I laughed all the way through, well done justin, you can sing, dance, u look great and now you can make me laugh, god i wish i was your girlf!!! lol

JC Thu, Dec 21, 2006 at 02:47 PM EST

"Girls, what's my weakness? SOUP. Okay then."

TamTam Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 09:02 PM EST

All of you white guys want to think the song says c*ck because that's how you refer to your members -- however the name of the song is "D*ck in a box" because it is more a parody of the 90s R&B bands, and black men say "d*ck" - that's only a cultural difference. If it's funnier for you to say one vs. the other, so be it!

Kim D. Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 02:34 PM EST

Amusing? It was HILARIOUS! I have watched it several times and it is just so funny. I love how the girls look so annoyed when the guys are putting the flower and the feather in their faces. This is as funny as any classic SNL.

Michelle Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 12:13 PM EST

Amusing, but I liked it better when Mr. Show did this exact same thing (blatantly ripping off something is the sincerest form of flattery, sure, but do any of these SNL digital shorts have ANY originality since there have been three other instances where they are almost 100% exactly like someone else's work?) with its boy-band duo Three Times One Minus One and their hit, "Eww, Girl, Eww."

Winona Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 11:56 AM EST

Great - thanks SNL, now my husband said he doesn't need to go Xmas shopping for me. ;-)

Tyler D Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 11:41 AM EST

Like Alison, I'm a bit surprised that everyone has forgotten that Timberlake got his start on the Mickey Mouse Club, which means he's comfortable doing these types of shows. Certainly a great episode and some hilarious sketches. Timberlake is just as good as Baldwin for hosting duties. I'm really enjoying Kristen Wiig. I really expected her to be a wasted talent on SNL, since some of her characters are so eccentric, but she's really done well this past year. Her expressions in the D*ick in a Box sketch are great and her A-Hole character is also fantastic ("Mer" "Wha?"). Now if only they could find something more substantial for Bill Hader and Seth Meyers. "Over at your parents' house... Midday at the grocery store... Backstage at the CMAs..."

yssys Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 10:21 AM EST

It was funny, although i still prefer the Natalie Portman video (That one brought tears to my eyes) and i`ve always loved when timberlake is on the show: The Barry Gibb talk show is great, the song hilarious... and i laughed out loud when he did the omeletteville sketch and danced to the rhythm of Britney's I'm slave 4 you...LOL

Rod Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 10:14 AM EST

SNL has become really dependent on their hosts from week to week. The Paris Hilton and Ludacris episodes were so horribly weak, but when they get guys like Alac Baldwin and JT the show is very very funny. If SNL does a better job of getting A list hosts to commit, the show will be better.

jeff Tue, Dec 19, 2006 at 01:20 AM EST

Shockingly, I think SNL's kinda been on an upswing this year. Many episodes have had several scenes that have been funny well into the first hour (which is a miracle for SNL). Alec Baldwin and JT's episodes were really fantastic (with the exception of the Barry Gibb show -- go back to making Taxi 2, Jimmy Fallon). I second the Hip Hop Kids being hilarious, too.

Brooklyn Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 11:30 PM EST

Those Lonely Island dudes have done it again! That was so Kablam-o! ;)

ericalina Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 11:26 PM EST

graeme, go to nbc.com and watch the unedited video. it's d!ck. c()ck may have been funnier, but d!ck is what it is.

Mozz Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 11:09 PM EST

ha ha ha, just in time for christmas. The perfect Christmas gift.

e4ia Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 11:09 PM EST

This video was the highlight of the show that was one of the best in quite a while. My favorite part of this video (besides the instructions on how to make a "D**k in a Box") was Kristin's subtle, slightly freaked-out "OK... enough with the feather" look.

graeme Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 10:51 PM EST

Yeah, it was definitely "C**k in a box"

krushgroove Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 10:11 PM EST

Wow, a sendup of R&B/Boy Bands? How cutting edge! If this is the funniest thing on SNL in a long time, I'm glad I'm not watching anymore.

Jess B. Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 09:02 PM EST

I can't stand Timberlake's music, but I gotta' admit, this week's SNL was a winner and he did a good job hosting. "D*ck in a Box" was classic! I couldn't stop laughing!

For those of you who like the digital shorts, check out The Lonely Island (www.thelonelyisland.com). It's got Andy Samberg, and the two other guys are currently writers on SNL. They're the ones responsible for all the digital shorts, and they've got some great pre-SNL stuff posted on their site, including an unaired pilot for Fox. My personal favorite is "Ka-Blamo!"

Jo-Jessica Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 08:46 PM EST

Man, this was the funniest SNL episode I've seen since the 2001 Alec Baldwin episode. "D--- in a Box" was simply transcendent. Also, Hip Hop Kids absolutely slayed me. "You gotta recognize your sedimentary rock formations" will never not be funny.

Bec Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 08:22 PM EST

I hardly ever watch SNL anymore and just happened to catch Justin Timerlake on this past Saturday night. OH MY GOSH! While I have not been a huge Justin fan, D**K in a box was THE FUNNIEST ever! SNL has not been that funny since the old days of Chris Farley and the other greats. Justin has a knack for comedy too - for sure! And what about the song "What goes around"? AWESOME!!! I am a Justin fan again! SNL... get back to the good stuff like this past weeks show!

brandonk Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:56 PM EST

I wish Justin and Alec hosted all the time! It has to be live, though, cuz the best part of Justin's hosting is the fact that he's always one bad pun away from losing it.

Jessica Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:49 PM EST

I'll take that*box* any day baby!!

Rosie Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:44 PM EST

Oh, my gosh, I was already in love with Justin Timberlake, but am in it even more after this SNL stint. And this song is really catchy, like another poster said. I have watched the digital short so many times since Sat. night. And Justin's performance of What Goes Around, the best song on his album, was so passionate and angry that I couldn't help but think of Britney. lol. LOVED this video and I must admit, the early 90's hair didn't take away anything from Justin's hotness. The chapped lips and stoner wig at Target--now that was a little unflattering. lol.

beb Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:41 PM EST

Too f---ing funny. I'd be a really happy boy if Justin gave me that as his "gift" for Xmas... :-P

P Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:34 PM EST

This is the second time that Justin put in a great performance on SNL. In recent years SNL hasn't been that funny but once in a while they get it right. One of those times was with Lazy Sunday, when Natalie Portman hosted and again on Saturday night. I thought Justin was great and so was the digital short.

paul Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:30 PM EST

i thought it was C**k IN A BOX-

Alicia Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:25 PM EST

I cannot stand Justin Timberfake, but I laughed so hard I cried. That was hilarious! I agree with Sam--he should ditch "singing" and stick with comedy. It is his true calling.

kcholt68 Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 07:08 PM EST

Hilarious! And with that goatee, doesn't Justin look like Charlie on "Lost"?

Melanie Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 06:35 PM EST

I think Justin should be a regular cast member. I only laugh out loud when he hosts.

heidi Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 06:13 PM EST

best song ever! JT is hilarious!

sam Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 05:54 PM EST

I am not a Justin fan, but his hosting of SNL is always hilarious. This was the best show in ages (except for Alec Baldwin's) and I think that it was even more consistently funny than Alec's. Justin has a lot of talent for comedy and impersonations (Robin Gibb--just great)and he should focus on that talent and actually singing (like the second song that he performed) instead of the other stuff that he has been doing lately.

Todd Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 05:24 PM EST

That was the funniest bit so far this season. Loved it!

Chaddogg Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 05:06 PM EST

Can we just make it official, and require SNL to have one episode of each season hosted by Justin Timberlake, and another by Alec Baldwin? Honestly, Justin was freaking fantastic - that was one of the best and most complete SNL's I've ever seen.....reserve a slot for him and Alec every season (each alternating the "Christmas" show, just so we could see more Schweatty Balls, too?) and SNL would be about 25% improved.

RadioSilence Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 05:03 PM EST

Maybe it would've been funny if it wasn't trying to parody music videos from the early 90s. At this rate I guess we can expect a skit from the SNL hacks about something that happened this year in say, uhm, 2022.

j.fo Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:58 PM EST

I've been watching it and humming it since Saturday night - it's hysterical (and mad catchy)! Also, it doesn't just reference Color Me Badd - also Bell Biv Devoe, R Kelly and, really, all the cheesetastic R&B acts of the early 90's. My favorite part is when Maya Rudolph looks in the box and mouths, "Thank you." So funny!

Sarah Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:58 PM EST

My favorite SNL since Justin did it the first time! Too bad he didn't pull out his Jessica Simpson impersonation again this time. I was wondering how they were going to fit the Omeletteville sketch in again. And Jimmy Fallon almost made it through the Barry Gibb sketch without laughing, as soon as I mentioned that to my sister, he kind of broke down. So close, Jimmy!

mike Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:47 PM EST

Normally, I have no use for Justin Timberlake. But, he is great on SNL. It is the best of the year after Alec Baldwin. I loved C__k in a Box. With the digital shorts, it allows the next sketch to be shorter and less painful. Keenan played the stage step-mom bit before with Julia Stiles. The Chipmonks were great as well.

joe Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:40 PM EST

I never knew that JT did anything other than sing. And that target episode was a riot. Does the Target company mind being poked fun at on national TV? Maybe it is good advertising for them. The latest I have heard is that JT and Nicole Richie are the newest couple. Hopefully JT will do another episode of SNL.

jared Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:38 PM EST

this digital short was in fact funny, but if you go back and look at them all it is a bunch of junk punctuated by the occasional lazy sunday hit. so making it just a bunch of digital shorts is in fact a terrible idea. actually now that i think about it the show would be exactly the same...a bunch of terrible with a small beacon of funny here and there.

susan Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:23 PM EST

I agree this episode was the funniest snl this year. I laughed till I just about peed my pants over the d--- in the box film. I also really loved the alvin and the chipmunks opening the homelessville skit and the barry gibb talk show. But now that I'm thinking about it every skit Timberlake was in was good. But the d--- in a box is just hilarious. I loved his perfomance also of what goes around. Timberlake should really do a comedy. He's a great comedic performer.

Silas Bent Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:17 PM EST

That is truly the only gift I am giving this year, so if it’s not appropriate, you’re not getting a present. Sorry, Mom.

Alison Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:10 PM EST

I still watch Justin's first SNL episode on a very fuzzy VHS tape, so I was extremely excited to see him host on Saturday. Every sketch he was in was hysterical. I think people forget that Justin got his start on a variety show, (Mickey Mouse Club, anyone?) so he feels comfortable in this type of comedic acting.

bma Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:09 PM EST

I also thought it was "C--k in a Box", and that sounds funnier. But I still laughed both times I saw it!

Also loved the sketch where JT auditioned to be an elf (in drag, with Keenan Thompson as his mom) -- does anyone know if that was also a repeat character from when he was on before?

Dee Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 04:04 PM EST

JT's SNL was the funniest of 06 so far. JT and Alec Baldwin are my favorites on SNL. They are so versatile that they always find the best skits for them.

MacKenzie Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:54 PM EST

I agree wholeheartedly with everyone. This episode was hilarious. My sister and I were hoping he'd do a sequel to the "Bring it on down to Omeletteville" sketch and we were so excited when he did the "Homelessville" sketch. It was a great way to start the show.

Julie Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:52 PM EST

I thought Justin was fantastic on SNL. I hardly watch the show anymore but happened to tune in on Saturday. D*ck in a Box was HILARIOUS. So was Justin as the rapping cup of soup. And the Gibb brothers skit. And the Target skit. All very funny. Good stuff. I've been sort of ambivalent toward Justin, but he earned my respect on Saturday.

Daniel Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:48 PM EST

I agree with Cruz, Kill the Live! This is what the people want. I want Portman and Timberlake to do one of these together. lol

Kat Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:39 PM EST

Boy when I saw it Saturday, I really thought it was c--k in a box. Can I still pretend that's what it is?

Cliff Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:26 PM EST

Much as I hate to take Alec Baldwin down a peg (he's still my pick for Entertainer of the Year, though, although Sacha Baron Cohen probably has him beat), the Timberlake show was probably the best SNL of 2006. JT was hilarious all the way thru, in the D--k In a Box short, as a lip-challenged Target clerk, and busting a move in a Cup O' Soup suit.

Jeff Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:23 PM EST

I have watched this video five times and am still laughing. This will definitely be on my New Year's party playlist!

dre Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:21 PM EST

I haven't laughed so hard at SNL in a loooong time. I was dying watching this, I laughed so hard I cried, it was so funny. I'm glad it's up on YouTube, it certainly bears repeat viewing.
The Barry Gibb Talk Show was funny too, I love the theme song.

jenn Mon, Dec 18, 2006 at 03:16 PM EST

That was so disgustingly funny. oh man. We recorded that episode, and I wouldn't let my parents watch that. Heck, I probably shouldn't have been watching it myself. Oh Lord, that was funny.
