Will you watch an all-star 'Amazing Race'?

Nov 22, 2006, 11:00 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Reality TV

According to this morning's Variety, CBS is planning an all-star edition of The Amazing Race for its upcoming 11th season. While there's no final word on which former Amazing Racers made the cut, the cast is expected to include reality veterans Rob and Am-buh, their nemeses Joyce and Uchenna, as well as David and Mary.

I know I've been cranky about everything all morning, but to me, all-star editions of reality series are Rated Boooo!, much better on paper than on the actual screen. Half the fun of shows like TAR is watching how average folks will respond to the extraordinary rules of the games they're playing, watching them push their physical limitations and occasionally devolve into Ugly Americans. Once a player has been through the experience -- not to mention been deemed a "fan favorite" -- the freshness is lost, and oftentimes, you end up with folks playing out the preordained characters they think they're expected to embody, rather than keeping it real.

That said, since it appears CBS is committed to this All-Star edition, they better include Team Cha-Cha-Cha. What say you, PopWatchers?

john yoiung Sun, Mar 11, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

rob and amber lose.

Sam Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 10:29 PM EST

Rob & Amber made it on the confirmed list as almost everybody here predicted

Diane Sun, Dec 10, 2006 at 10:12 PM EST

We are so excited Rob and Amber are getting another chance..CBS robbed them of the million last time! We don't really believe that Uchenna and Joyce got on that plane all by themselves, do we? I hope Rob and Amber win the money, and we will be watching TAR again because of them!

Tanya Sun, Dec 10, 2006 at 10:09 PM EST

Ron and Amber are the reason many of us watch reality TV. They are fabulous and open about their scheming and backstabbing. It is so irritating to watch people claim to "play with integrity" - um, until their backs are against the wall. The constant and misguided self-righteousness from so many players is beyond ridiculous. Rob and Amber are who they are - like them or not, at least they are real. That is the idea, yes?

Corran Mon, Dec 4, 2006 at 08:01 PM EST

Rob and Amber...grr...cant someone get rid of them! THEY ARE SUCH AN INGRATIATING TEAM! I want HAyden and Aaron back. They were my favorite couple ever :)

Becky Sun, Dec 3, 2006 at 10:36 PM EST

I think it would be great if Kevin and Drew from the first season were on. Who wants to see Amber wining to Rob.

lachlan Tue, Nov 28, 2006 at 07:30 PM EST

What is everyone's problem they are just like characters in a book if we didnt have them then there wouldnt be a show so get over youselfs because every team that has enterd has done amazing things.

Seriosly what is wrong with the family edition its awsome and i went for the weavers and they rocked.

I am so happy to see Rob / Amber back they are awsome and are here for our entertainment, they is no such show where everyone is perfect so either get over yourself or go and enter and we will judge you like you judge these people, i will judge you like pigs on how discusting use are and that will make television.

Jim Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 04:17 PM EST

I'll be watching it just for Rob and Amber. They are a fun couple, and I hope they win this time around!

Janet Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 12:54 PM EST

As long as there were no past winners and Charla and her cousin...then I'd watch. Just no more Family editions, that was awful.

KW Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 12:32 PM EST

I agree 100% that All Stars reality shows are hugely disappointing. Most of the people that are willing to do a second run are the ones who want to milk whats left of their "fame" for whatever its worth.

Abby Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 12:16 PM EST

I loved Meredith & Gretchen, but being as they are even older now, I am not sure they would be physically able to do it.

slashslut Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 07:12 AM EST

yay, team cha-cha-cha! they are my favorite team of all the seasons so far! i hope they come back for the all-star edition.

Laurie Sun, Nov 26, 2006 at 06:55 PM EST

Rumors that an All-Stars version was in the works have been swirling for a while now, and I guess I should have realized CBS would shove Amber and Rob down our throats yet again. Still, I was shocked when I read the article on variety.com that confirmed Amber and Rob are supposed to be racing again. It made me kind of sick to my stomach, frankly.

For the first time since episode three of the first season, I won't be watching TAR until they're eliminated. If that means missing the entire season, so be it. CBS, I've stuck with this show through thick and thin - ratings in the toilet, hiatusville, more timeslot changes than you can shake a stick at, those dreadful Weavers - but I've had enough. Sorry, Cha, sorry, Kevin and Drew, but no.

theresa Sun, Nov 26, 2006 at 01:33 AM EST

PLEASE NO ROB & Amber havent they had enough chances??? I am tired of watching them. I would love to see BB7 Will and Boogie aka "chilltown"

Elizabeth Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 10:33 PM EST

I love this show and I wouldn't mind to see Rob and Amber against the other Stars. Yes, they have made a lot of money and have experience in Reality TV but this time the other contestants wouldn't be new. I think the race would be very interesting. I'd love to see Kevin & Drew, Nancy & Emily, Blake & Paige, Cha Cha Cha. Please, no Colin & Christi or Freddy & Kendra or anyone who says "baby" every 5 seconds.

Connie Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 05:02 PM EST

My boyfriend lives with one of the hippies now, I'd love for him to win again ;-)

Sheila Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 09:14 AM EST

It still would be better than the gawdawful family edition.

alexsandra Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 06:46 PM EST

I guess I will watch it because I don't like missing the show ( although I didn't watch the family ed). I just don't like the idea of an All Star show. One of the best parts for me is seeing how people handle themselves in a different part of the world. The people have already been there...so its not so fresh. I also don't like Rob and Amber and can't believe TAR would put them back on. The have already won tons from Survivor and sold their wedding for $$$$$. I think they should only look at either people who finished either 2 & 3rd or give the ones who never made it past the first or 2nd leg another shot. The one exception would be the bowling moms..they were great.

Ashley Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 06:22 PM EST

Former Reality stars do NOT count as stars...

Nikki Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 04:43 PM EST

I would watch it for sure, but please no Rob and Amber. I think they got enought chances and they are super annoying. I really enjoyed Big Brother Allstars and think Amazing Race Allstars would be tons of fun. Hope it happens

Logan Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 04:31 PM EST

I'd watch it... but I agree: as much as I liked the hippies, previous winners should not be allowed to compete. As well DO NOT bring back Rob and Am-buh - they are Survivors, not Amazing Racers...

dap Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 03:20 PM EST

Whatever, I will probably watch it...too bad they can't bring back all the miserable couples like Tara & Wil, Johnathan & Victoria, Flo & Zach, Colin & Christie, Lake & Michelle, Rob & Kimberly.
I liked the hippies but they shouldn't bring back previous winners. Bring back the Frat Guys, Kevin & Drew, Al & Jon, Kris & Jon, Jill & John Vito and Oswald & Danny to balance out the miserable couples. Oh and Paige too if she brings that bathing suit back :)
Assuming Rob & Amber are going to be on, everytime TAR identifies them onscreen, they can be "Rob & Amber - Media Whores"

Mark Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 11:06 AM EST

"Molly Mole! Molly-molly-molly-molly-molly mole!" What was her name? She had the best lines of series so far. Also, would love to have Cha-Cha-Cha back, as they did such a wonderful job of making it look effortless. While some stopped to pray, Cha Cha knew that a caramel machiatto was essential race strategy. And I believe they were right. To see Cha Cha on with Reichen and Lance Bass, that would be verrrry interesting TV.

While I recognize that some of the 'driven' couples (and by that I mean supercalifragi-crazy) made good TV, I always enjoyed the show more with the couples who really seemed to be enjoying it themselves. Romber, this is not you, why can't you go on Meerkat Manor? How about appearing on Shark Week? This would accomplish twin objectives, raising their ratings and providing me the wonderful knowledge that after your appearance as 'bait', I can safely watch TV again.

Lori Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:22 PM EST

I don't like the idea of an All Star edition but will probably watch because I hate missing out on TAR. I can't believe Rob & Amber are going to be foisted on us yet AGAIN - those camera whores will never get tired of it, so it would be great if somebody would see the light and stop casting them. Kevin & Drew would be so cool to see again, though, as would Colin & Christie. Colin provided me with my favorite TAR quote ever - "My ox is broken! This is bulls***!"

bootsycolumbia Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 07:24 PM EST

If they did an all-star edition with some sort of twist, I'd be into it. Like, pick the first team eliminated each edition...or the toxic teams who really hate each other's guts...or couples who've broken up...as long as they put some thought into it, and don't include Romber, I'll probably watch. Besides, it can't be as horrible as the family edition.

Valerie Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 06:58 PM EST

Rob and Amber have got to be in an all stars TAR ! I love the mind games ! And I agree with a previous poster that they should bring all the couples that don't date anymore. Such fun !!

Cynic Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 06:51 PM EST

An All-Stars versions of TAR doesn't work for me either, Michael. I can't seem to get the rid of the bad taste of the Family Edition of TAR.

That said, if the "Jedi Bombshell" Janelle would partner with someone else (Will, Howie, Kaysar???) from Big Brother, I might change my mind. Hey CBS, don't limit the contestants to only former TAR contestants.

Sharlin Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 06:42 PM EST

I love Rob and Amber. Let's hope they win this All-Star season.

PJ Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 05:09 PM EST

Yuck! Half the fun of these shows is getting to know the personalities of the contestants. All-Star editions are not the best. The contestants know the game, know each other, know the producers--nothing surprises or enthuses them like their first go-around. And the lack of spark shows onscreen. Count me among the many who have grown to hate All-Star editions. (And blame Big Brother 7 for doing it.)

Vance Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 04:07 PM EST

OH totally agree with Felicity: Blake and Paige, Emily and Nancy, Kevin and Drew, Cha Cha Cha (which i said before).

I like Charla and Myrna, David and Mary, Jon and Al, Kris and Jon, John Vito and Jill and Lynn and Alex too.

Please no Colin and Christie or Chip and Kim please.

Christine Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 03:39 PM EST

Team Cha-cha-cha all the way. They were incredible, season 2. Very laid back, made it look easy. Bring back the bowling moms and the clowns for sure. I think they should bring back a lot of those fourth place teams that were always so great but missed it by some freakish error. (Like the clowns were on a flight that got delayed, bad luck.) Bring back those two models that would get so mad at each other and call each other really nasty names. They were a lot of fun.

Heather Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 03:06 PM EST

All-Stars wouldn't be "All-Stars" without Boston Rob. Oh yeah, and bring Amber too if you insist.

Becky Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 03:02 PM EST

Oh yeah, and I'd love to see Tyler/James back too...win or lose TAR10.

Becky Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

I would love to see Jon/Al, Colin/Christie, Chip/Kim, Lynn/Alex, Rob/Amber, Rob/Brennan and Eric/Jeremy all back for the all stars edition. I can totally do without teams like Freddy/Kendra, Hippies and David/Mary (not even the slightest bit competitive...they got by on their alliance alone). I would also love to see Reichen/Chip back but I know they've broken up so it would be hard for the producers to get them together again for the race. As long as they pick good teams and not crappy ones like David/Mary or the Hippies, I'd be fine with an all-stars edition.

Chris Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:55 PM EST

I'd watch...cause I don't know who these people really are. This is the first season I've seen. But I will not watch if Dustin and Candace are involved. I've almost stopped watching because of their extreme annoyance level. I can barely take it anymore.

WRC Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:44 PM EST

As much as I would love to watch the train-wreck of Jonathan & Victoria--I'm pretty sure they won't be included. They just had a baby about a month ago.

Bring back the hippies, Kris & John, Mary & David (for sentimentality) and OF COURSE Romber!

Liza Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

I'm okay with an All-Star. As long as they leave out Rob and Amber. Their 15 minutes are waaaaay up, and besides they have won enough money. I would exclude all previous winners, just to give the others a chance at winning a million dollars, and that way we're sure that Freddy and Kendra are not back. I really liked they couple who came in second that season, can't remember their names. I'd also like to see Victoria and her wife-beating husband Jonathan, just to see if he's changed at all

aa Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:21 PM EST

bring back rob and amber! i love all of his mind games and especially love how absolutely stupid everyone is around him.

Kayla Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:19 PM EST

Although I would stay away from ahny "all star cast", I look forward to seeing the hipppies again; however, I will NOT watch if that insufferable Rob and her Stepfford Wife Amber or even Richard Hatch are part of the cast. Would love to see, however, an Amazing Race of famous people..... that would be awesome.....

brandonk Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:10 PM EST

MEREDITH & GRETCHEN!!! They gave Josh Wolk some of his best source material ever!
Okay, I'll stop posting now.

brandonk Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:08 PM EST

Oh, I see ericalina has already suggested that...LOL

brandonk Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:07 PM EST

I think they should try to get Chip and Reichen and other teams that have split up or whatever since their race...that could be good for some drama, eh?

brandonk Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:06 PM EST

I've been waiting for this, actually! I love the Amazing Race no matter what, though (although the family edition gets a little less love than the other seasons).

toonces Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:56 PM EST

Oh I see Oswald and Danny- were they hispanic gays? I forget...
Why so much love for them? I'm trying to remember what was so memorable.

toonces Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:55 PM EST

CHARLA AND MYRNA! please!!!! they are the best
Who is cha cha cha?? anyone???
I don't even remember them. I have watched since season 1 and cannot remember everyone

Felicity Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:36 PM EST

I'm for it in principle, but I will absolutely not watch if Rob and Amber are involved.

My top picks would definitely include Oswald & Danny (Cha-Cha-Cha) and Kris & Jon. Kevin & Drew, Nancy & Emily, and Blake & Paige would also be nice to see again. I guess they have to put some "villains" in there to keep it interesting, though.

Tommy G. Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:34 PM EST

I think I'd like to see this - although I hope the producers kick up the tasks and make them harder.

Bring back the clowns!
Bring back Charla/Mirna!
Bring back Rebecca with a new partner! (Leavy Whiny Adam at home.)

RBlues Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:10 PM EST

Count me in! ANYTHING to see hottie Boston Rob extend his 15 minutes of fame on my T.V. screen!

ericalina Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:56 PM EST

i'd also like to say that i think it would be sort of funny to maybe bring back couples that are no longer together - ones for whom TAR did them in. THAT would be okay by me!

otherwise, all star is a lazy idea. ok, i'm done now!

Sarah C Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:55 PM EST

I would watch, because if I can survive the travesty that is the Family Edition, I can endure anything. Plus, I can only imagine how snarky Josh's TV Watches would be on Monday mornings.

My fave team of all time has to be Kris and Jon (the season when Freddy and whatsherface won) -- please bring back the water polo challenge!

ericalina Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:52 PM EST

i'm not a huge R&A fan, but i don't see them using their "celebrity" (and i use that term loosely) any differently from contestants using beauty, abundance of charm, good looks, big boobs, a previous knowledge of a language, or anything to get ahead. TAR should only have unattractive people who can speak english poorly if no one should use their advantages, well, to their advantage.

you don't think the "homlier" contestants might have a harder time getting noticed than the good looking ones?

Kitty Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:50 PM EST

Love the idea of a celebrity amazing race - hate the idea of an all star edition. Haven't Rob and Am-buh had their 15 minutes of fame to the 5th power already? I always thought they had an unfair advantage in AR as they were readily recognized and given much more assistance than their fellow competitors. Could CBS even get 12 teams of celebs (even C/D list) to commit to what - 12 - 15 weeks of this?

daisyj Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:47 PM EST

I love TAR, but I have a feeling I'd hate this. For one thing, if I ever have to see Rob and Amber on my TV again, I may throw it through the window, and glazing is expensive. But more than that, one of the things I hated most about R&A's previous appearance was the way they could use their "celebrity" to get people to do things for them, which I thought violated the whole idea of the race (ordinary people in foreign countries, trying to figure things out on their own).

Kathy Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:44 PM EST

I'm watching ONLY if Rob and Amber are racing. Who cares about the whole 15-minutes-of-fame thing?? I love Rob & Amber!!

Joyce Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:40 PM EST

I personally like to watch all-star editions. It's fun watching the contestants make the SAME mistakes all over again. They don't learn.

Anna Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:32 PM EST

Noooooo! No more hippies! Cha Cha Cha would be great. I'd also like to see Team Guido and the Frats and Frank and Margarita from Season 1.

The only reason to include David and Mary is for sentimental reasons. It'd be a lot easier for David to quit his job as a coal miner if he got the million.

ericalina Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:28 PM EST

i am most certainly a glutton for punishment but id love to see linda and karen, the bowling moms; adam and rebecca, the no-longer-a-couple-couple that gave us some of the BEST fights and insults (though she's moved onto to more reality tv since then); meredith and gretchen, the old people; and the loud new york family (the dipolos?).

as well as uchenna and joyce of course :)

Al Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:20 PM EST

Instead of an all-star Amazing Race, why not do a Celebrity Amazing Race? You know, where Screech and Zach from Saved by the Bell race against, say, Andrea and Kelly from 90210?

How about that instead??

nd Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:05 PM EST

i'd love to see the hippies again.

Thad Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 12:00 PM EST

Reichen and....Lance

michael Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:52 AM EST

I just wanna say that I, too, love me some Charla and Mirna. And besides the "I just got electrocuted!" moment, I LOVE when they had to corral the goats on the boat and Charla had the biggest problem and screamed, "MIRNA! That's the mean one!"

Debbie Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:50 AM EST

I'd much rather see a "Celebrity" Amazing Race!

Craig Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:40 AM EST

I am usually right with you Slezak, but I couldn't disagree with you more on this one. I like all-star shows for the most part. I find it interesting to watch people who are already familiar with the nuances of the game compete with one another. For me, it just ups the tension... and that is my favorite part of the Amazing Race. And if Charla and Myrna are back, I will be glued to the tv. "I just got electrocuted!" is my favorite reality tv moment EVER.

Betsy Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:35 AM EST

I think it would be fun to use some of our "dating at the time" couples who progressively hated eachother's guts over the course of the race and broke up after the race was done.

I also love some Terry and Ian!

Vance Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:35 AM EST

Uh, I meant Alliances.

Vance Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:33 AM EST

I don't think this one is as bad of an idea as Survivor All Stars since it's not really about alliaces (as much as the Cho Brothers would like to believe). It's a RACE where the outcome won't really be determined by the dynamics between teams.

Anyways, if Team Cha Cha Cha is in, I am THERE!

As long as they keep the race in places that don't really know them yet (let's go back to Mongolia!) then I think it should be fine.

Scott Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:21 AM EST

While it may sound nice to see some of my favorite past teams again, this would likely devolve into another terrible Survivor Allstars (especially if Rob and Amber come back...aren't their 15 minutes long over??). I think this is a bad idea and I will most likely skip the season (like I should have with Family Edition).

graeme Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:13 AM EST

I'd watch it just to see Charla & Myrna again.
But I don't think I could handle seeing Joyce & Ucheena lose cause them winning was my favorite reality tv moment ever.

Mariane Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:10 AM EST

How are David and Mary All-Stars? It should be a competition of all the teams that came in second. They played a good game and were usually done in by circumstances, like taxi drivers or plane connections, at the very end.

Stacey Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:09 AM EST

I like the idea. Of course I am in the minority and liked the Family Edition. But I disagree about David and Mary being included. While they were nice, they weren't good racers. Sticked around only due to alliance and not their skills. And not one of the top teams ever. The race has to include Dustin and Kandance as they are best all female team ever. I am intrigued by the idea. Because as Survivor showed and even Big Brother. Not everyone the second time around can do it. Especially not the winners. Especially if other teams have seen your strengths and weaknesses. Wish Rob and Amber weren't included, but I am sure they would be. Wow, it' been around 10 rounds. Hard to pick favorite teams, because there have been so many...

Matt Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 11:07 AM EST

I wouldnt watch it period. Big Brother All Stars was freakin insane, and I dont mean that in a good way. I never watched Survivor All-Stars, but CBS needs to lay the whole deal to rest. I knew beyond a doubt that there would be a Race All-stars. This is just something CBS does when they cant think of anything else for these type of shows.

One question: Look at the ratings for all the seasons of Big Brother. They were really good and then look at the ratings for All-Stars. HUGE difference. It even almost killed the show and as a religious BB fan, All-Stars is not how I wanted to see the show go out.
