'Why Wasn't This a Huge Hit?' (Vol. 2)

Nov 21, 2006, 08:55 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music, Why Wasn't This a Huge Hit?

In today's edition of our new PopWatch feature, we discuss Jill Sobule's "Underdog Victorious," the title track to her 2004 album. Do you think Jill could've topped the pop charts if she'd also released a synergistic sex tape or lip-synched this song on SNL and blamed it on acid reflux? Because apparently, an instantly addictive melody and wry, lovely storytelling aren't enough these days. But don't take my word for it. Click here, listen for yourself, and then tell me, "Why Wasn't This a Huge Hit?"

A. Because American radio hit bottom a couple years back and keeps on sinking.
B. Because Jill forgot to include "calling Lindsay Lohan a firecrotch" in her marketing plan.
C. Because nobody likes songs with jaunty "la-la-la-la-las" anymore.
D. Because people secretly like to root for dodgeball bullies.
E. Because, Slezak, you just have bad taste in music.

After your Lina post, i will never insult your music taste Michael!

However, this song isn't the type of song that would have ever been a hit in any decade

Cool to see someone draw attention to this song! I saw her perform live recently, heard this song, and instantly dug it. Thanks for letting other people know about it.

I think it may be due in small part to the fact that it's a story song, and there aren't many of those that make it on the radio. On the other hand, radio sucks, so that's no biggie.

E...it's just OK. The question should be why the Scissor Sisters can't get airplay in the U.S.

This song is a throwback style to early 70s. It's not bad but people aren't listening to stories (like billy joel songs) anymore. So I vote for A, because it's oh-so-true and E, because it's not the best song I've ever heard.

Jenny came over and told me about Fred.
"He's such a hairy behemoth," she said,
"Dumb as a box of hammers, but he's such a handsome guy."

So I opened up and I told her about Larry,
and yesterday how he asked me to marry
and I've not given him an answer yet...
I think I can do better.

So we laughed.
Compared notes.
We had a drink. We had a smoke.
She took off her overcoat.

I kissed a girl.

Mediocre song. A bit catchy but I wouldn't want to listen to it more than once.

Broadway Baby Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 03:38 PM EST

I think it may have failed because the public has come to trust Train with trite, overwritten lyrics and melody. But maybe that's just me.

Miranda Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 03:18 PM EST

I like it. I never heard it before. I vote A, or maybe D.

jo Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 03:08 PM EST

I choose (E)-- this song sounds like Holiday music! Or something on a album for kids. Eek. (And I usually like happy music)!

I agree that it's hard to top I Kissed A Girl. That was a cool song, complete with Fabio in the video.

larry Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 12:39 PM EST

This is an OK song. Nothing can compete with "Supermodel." Now that was a perfect, catchy, pop-perfect, radio-friendly song! Either way, she's still awesome in my eyes too!

Shelby Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 12:16 PM EST

A and alittle B.

I'm just so giddy that someone at a place like EW is actually giving props to an amazing, intelligent, witty artist who hasn't been given the kind of credit and acknowledgement that she deserves.

And I'm extra giddy that it's our Slezak!

Michael, there are always songs that I hear I wish were hits. Back in the 80's, Lone Justice and early Bangles had great songs that didn't make it. THat's radio!

Julia Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 09:56 AM EST

It seem the music business is not for the faint of heart. Really, what mainstream radio station would play this kind of (great) music. And outlet for inventive music doesnt exist except maybe college radio or World Cafe. I've loved Jill Sobule since her "Pink Pearl" album. She, like Aimee Mann, do it on their own (Aimee releases her music on her own label "SuperEgo Records"). Speaking of fabulous music, Rosanne Cash's "Black Cadillac" is brilliant stuff. Why isnt SHE big too?

I hate radio Tue, Nov 21, 2006 at 09:41 AM EST

Poor Jill and other notable, highly talented artists are forced to put out their own music and stand aside while the hideous Simpsons, over-rated Hilton and pathetic Lohan are all on the charts...oh, don't forget the whiney, over-produced, hollow sounds of 'sensitive guys with eye-liner and girl jeans' music. If you are looking for the real deal, I suggest cdbaby.com or other former 'big label', now indie artists like Tegan & Sara, Casey Stratton, Aimee Mann, Cat Power, etc. etc.

Maybe Jill is destined to forever only be associated with her somewhat-mainstream hit "I Kissed a Girl." No matter that she has a great voice and sings other catchy tunes.
