Who's elated about the return of 'Medium'?

145221__medium_l Day Break, Shmay Break! The premiere I'm most excited about tonight is the third-season opener of NBC's wickedly creative Medium. I like to think of it as the creepy little drama that could. It doesn't get the ratings of CSI, even though its crimes are often more creative. It doesn't get the buzz of Lost, even though it's frequently just as gripping and innovative. And it does family drama as well (and as realistically -- see the rumpled clothes and messy kitchen counters) as any show on the airwaves.

Now, according to the folks at Sci Fi Wire, series creator Glenn Gordon Caron is fulfilling a long-running ambition by infusing tonight's episode with 2-D animation techniques, and better still, they'll be used during the dream sequences of my favorite child actor, Maria Lark (quirky middle kid Bridgette). Let's just hope Emmy-winning star Patricia Arquette's decision to pull a Felicity (see her stark new bob, pictured) -- and the show's new time slot -- don't result in a ratings dip. Who's joining me to watch Medium tonight and ensure that doesn't happen?

I want my hair cut like hers!!
She is amazing...

Love the show and patricia.
The red carpet Golden Globes comment above:
Patricia had already spoken to the red carpet interviewer for at least a minute, about the show. She asked Patricia a REALLY stupid and lame question, and the announcer was saying "please come inside tos tart the show", so Patricia did the right thing, even though a little abrupt.
I met sweet and lovely PA in person and chatted with her. let me tell you, she is anything but rude. She is a wonderful person.

I don;t get it. Why do people love this show. It's a two-bit procedural.

Barry Stinson Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 06:30 PM EST

I'll just join the crowd and welcome Medium back. I can't quibble about the new time slot, and I enjoy Studio 60 - Those that didn't watch the recent 2-parter featuring John Goodman
missed some classic TV. Good luck to PA and her brood for this season, and hopefully more to come.

Donna Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 02:34 PM EST

People, don't get your undies in a bunch. Tonite is a two hour special starting at 9, but it's regular time slot will be at 10. You can have your Lost *and* your Medium. You'll just have to record CSI:New York and lose The Nine. Anyway, that's my plan. What to watch while Lost is on hiatus, I don't know.

But, yes, I'm glad that Medium is back. This is one of the few shows where the home life and the work life are equally well done. I think the girls are so natural in their characters - I wonder if some portion of their parts are ad-libbed?

I am so excited! There are a couple of points:

1) Why the hell isn't this on after Heroes?!
2) Her new haircut is so freaking cute
3) I can't wait to see Mr. Dubois and hear his sexy voice

*HAPPY DANCE*

dee Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 01:34 PM EST

I'm elated but i hate that they moved it to another time slot. Why oh why did they do this? Doesn' it premiere opposite Criminal Minds and Lost? Please return it to its original time slot, pronto!

Liza Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 01:25 PM EST

I was a huge fan in season 1. I stopped watching the second season for no particular reason at all. I'll give it a chance tonight since Lost is on hiatus, but as of Feb 7, I'll go back to Lost.

jane Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 12:33 PM EST

If you ask me, Lost went on hiatus just in time. I totally would have abandoned the island in favor of watching the DuBois family. The show isn't fancy, but it's solidly written, well-acted and there hasn't been an episode yet that I didn't like.

ag Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:37 AM EST

I love this show! The new time slot seems stupid, but I won't have to worry about conflict til Feb., I guess.

Best reason to watch: Jake Weber as Mr. Dubois. He's DEAD SEXY.

Will Holston Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:36 AM EST

They need to move it back to Mondays behind heroes!! I can't watch it Wednesdays but I LOVE IT!

brandonk Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:29 AM EST

I'll be there! I have been impatiently awaiting this premiere since the beginning of the season. I am a little leery about the creator using another "technique" after the 3-D episode, but whatever. Love Patricia's hair!

GayJay Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:59 AM EST

I don't think "elated" is the correct word here... Maybe more the phrase "regressing into a child-like grin and school girl gleeful giggle" (or is that the same thing? I can't tell anymore--I swear, I've been waiting for new "Medium" since "Studio 60" got moved to it's rightful timeslot)

mc Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:53 AM EST

i LOVE patricia arquette and her down-to-earth persona. i've been an avid fan of 'medium' since its inception and have waited seemingly forever for its return to nbc's lineup. as for the new 'do, it's wonderful. patricia is gorgeous. the show rocks. the young actress who plays bridgett will be getting more air time in the upcoming season, and for that we can all be grateful. this is a talented kid! as for "miss arquette's ample bosom" (see previous comment by 'spud'), who could miss it? it is one of the co-stars of the show, what with all those late night bed scenes with arquette's on-screen husband who, btw, is also sexy.

dw Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:48 AM EST

LOVE Medium. Especially love Mr. Dubois... I am so excited for its return tonight!

fredric Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:45 AM EST

Slezak, you of all people should know that it wasn't the haircut that killed Felicity's ratings... they took the show from it's post Dawson home run ratings night and put it on Sundays against The Simpsons!

And YAY I am glad Medium is back. I can't wait!

julie Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:35 AM EST

Yes! So glad this show is BACK! I agree with some others about this show getting no press, while other shows are shoved down our throats every second. Glad Lost is over, didnt want to watch Daybreak, glad there is something to watch. Love the family and bridget is my fave. Everyone... tell a friend to watch this show and maybe people will pay attention.

Stephen Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:34 AM EST

Great show with great actress and look forward to another intriguing season! I'm with you!

Ed Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:20 AM EST

I don't like Patricia Arquette ever since she dissed Lisa Ling on the red carpet. I think it was 2 years ago when Medium came out and it was all the rage; the Golden Golbes gave it all sorts of noms.

Patricia was late and she was coming in with her husband, Lisa tried to ask her whether she believed in ghosts and Patricia gave her a dirty look and said, "I can't answer that, I'm late for the show". It was so obvious that Lisa twitched and said, with a fake smile, "that's it from here".

I'll never forget that Patricia Arquette, you're mean!

P.S and your show SUCKS, sorry Michael.

spud Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:57 AM EST

Concur on the loving the show, and the family interaction is dead-on realistic (the main reason the wife watches the show). But I think people miss the wonder that is Patricia Arquette's amble bosom. I just got through watching a Charlie Kaufman-penned pic called "Huamn Nature", which features many shots of Patricia's sweater puppies, so I am primed for the return. She likes to wear the conservative clothes, but we all know the magnificent mounds that lie underneath!!

Dan Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:48 AM EST

I love "Medium" and am soooo excited for tonight's episode!!! Glad to see that others even know this show exists as it has absolutely ZERO press coverage!!

Not only is the main idea of the show creative, but, the portrayal of the family unit is the most realistic of any show on TV right now.

PS -- I think Patricia's haircut is adorable.

Deb Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:47 AM EST

Been a fan since the begining, can't wait till tonight!
I guess better late then never.

EM Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:43 AM EST

Yep. I'm with you!

Josh Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:41 AM EST

Thank you.

The first short season, when it debuted in midseason, I was skeptical. Arquette won the Emmy, though I wasn't sure if it was deserved. I thought it would get repetitive and predictable, with ghost after ghost.

Luckily I wasn't a fan of "CSI: Miami" and found myself tuning in on occassion during season two. I noticed the show becoming more creative, erasing away my previous fears. This wasn't just a procedural show with a twist, this was a show growing into one of television's finest hours.

But none of the critics seemed to notice. As people talked about "The Office" getting better in its second season, and about "Desperate Housewives" getting worse that season, "Medium" seemed ignored. My favorite shows often align with critics, that's just the type of taste I have, and I began to wonder if I was off or if they were.

So thank you for confirming what I came to know during season 2. Not only does it have one of TV's best relationships (and you're so right about Maria / Bridgette - one of TV's finest scene-stealers), but it also is truly one of the most creative shows out there in terms of storytelling and directing/editing/producing.

My ony worry is that I've also become a fan of "The Nine", but at least tonight I don't have to worry about the conflict.

e Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:36 AM EST

I'm so excited. I wish it were still on Mondays (with Heroes . . . wouldn't that be a great block?!). I'm glad I don't have to wait til January for the show to come back, that's for sure.

Jeff Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 09:04 AM EST

I'm sooooo there tonight! Love this show, but it's gonna have to battle at this timeslot, but my DVR will definately be recording it! PA is great and the girls, are good too. Can't wait to see how grown they are now! Should make for some good story lines!

Garry Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:30 AM EST

I've loved "Medium" since its premiere, and I was thrilled to see Patricia Arquette win the Emmy for her performance (and I don't think her new haircut is bad at all!). I've been missing it since the end of last season, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the ratings stay strong. NBC would be foolish not to support it for as long as the show is on the air.

Allen Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:18 AM EST

Mike...

Normally I'd join you, but I'll just have to look forward to your recap instead.

Jakeem Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 06:25 AM EST

I only hope that NBC is embarrassed that this show was shelved in favor of "Studio 60" on Monday nights. Maybe the return of "Medium" will be one thing that the Peacock Network actually gets right this season!
