Weekend To-Do List: Thanksgiving Edition

Nov 22, 2006, 01:15 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Weekend To-Do List

91811__madonna_l Over the river and through the woods -- for some, that's a loooong journey, and one that will require some pop-cultural distractions along the way.  I mean, how much chat about Aunt Frida's goiter can a person handle, right? In that spirit, I present the following version of the (Long) Weekend To-Do List:

- Scientists have proven the polar opposite of discussing Aunt Frida's goiter is watching Madonna: The Confessions Tour -- Live From London (Wednesday, NBC, 8 p.m.). Would I make up something like that? (Alas, Madge and NBC have nixed the disco crucifixion, but she still writhes on a chair, as shown. Will that do?)

- Some twisted sadist at ABC decided to extend Grey's Anatomy (Thursday, ABC, 9 p.m.) to 70 minutes this week. Set your DVR now, before you go into a turkey coma. You'll thank me on Monday.

- Catch The Edge -- no, I'm not going all Xtreme Sports on you, I'm talking about the dude from U2 -- in Bono and The Edge: Off the Record, a sneak preview of erstwhile Eurythmic Dave Stewart's new HBO late-night music/interview  series. (Friday, HBO, 11:00 p.m.)

- On the Web, Worth 1000's "Superhero Casting Call" contest is pretty inspired. My favorite is Batman's sidekick as The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

- The Beatles' latest, a remix album called LOVE, gets an A from EW's Chris Willman, and its good vibes might make the weekend's traffic jams slightly less rage-inducing.

- Thomas Pynchon's tome Against the Day also gets an A, from Ken Tucker, in the pages of EW; it could come in handy on Friday, in the event you are rendered inert from the previous day's food-fest.

- And finally, if you're at a loss for what to bring to this weekend's festivities, you cannot go wrong with Chicken in a Biskit. If I have to explain, then it's clear you haven't indulged in a box in quite some time, if ever.

Anyhow, Happy Thanksgiving, and see you Monday!

Show me any other 48 year old woman that can do what she did on that stage, or for that matter even hold her up against the Jessica Simpsons, Brittney Spears, Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans of today - she blows them all out of the frickin' water!

Chicken in a Biskit is mad yummy.

adam Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 12:58 PM EST

Colleen, and anyone else who feels as she does, did you see the concert? Did you think about how the crucifixion was used? There was no mockery involved. Not of Christ; not of Christianity. Madonna used the image to bring attention to the fact that millions of African children are being orphaned by AIDS. We may all have many problems in our lives, but these children know little of anything but misery. And just as she climbs down from the cross toward the end of the song, so should we each climb down from our own and help others. To me the perfomance was less mockery and more a pleading to actually demonstrate "Christian" values.

It will be on Bravo Nov 30, so that's Thursday at 8:00. And I will definitely watch it again. :)

I know I"ll be watching it.. again.

lilly Mon, Nov 27, 2006 at 09:04 AM EST

Does Anyone know if there is a way to watch the concert or if it is going to be rebroadcast? The NBC affilate in South Bend, IN facistly pre-emptied the concert and I couldn't see it!

shelby Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 09:11 PM EST

Get a life Colleen! Chill out and have some sex! Yes you are allowed as a Christian to have sex-so run along! Madonna does not need fans like you anyway!

jason Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 08:01 PM EST

colleen, you clearly do not understand what message she was trying to send. until you hear from her what the point of that part of the show was, do not judge, last time i checked you weren't Jesus.

Colleen Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 06:26 PM EST

I'm so glad that NBC refused to let Madonna be crucified. As a Christian (who USE to LOVE Madonna), I find it incredibly distastful, insulting and heartbreaking that she choses to re-inact the most important and most loving event of our faith. Jesus was crucified on that cross. And for her to imitate his sacrifice makes me so angry! It would be like if she dressed up as Mohammed in her concert. Or if she had a section where she acted like a Holocaust victim. I will never, ever support her again. Madonna - You can dislike Christianity all you like, but it dosen't mean that you need to spit on it and mock it. I don't mock your red kabbalah bracelet that wards off evil glances....

matt Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 03:29 PM EST

Hey just a request-can we get some more headscratcher "guess who this is?" blogs?
I LOVE THOSE!!

Ken Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 12:23 PM EST

Madonna was great, but editing was way to choppy. Should have used a camera panning along with her.

Steve Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 12:20 PM EST

From Jon: >

Uh, Jon? Madonna has co-written and co-produced almost all of her material since 1986. Perhaps you should not commnet on things that you clearly know nothing about.

Maeve Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 07:57 AM EST

Ok it's now November 25 and we haven't had a new PopWatch in 3 days. I know it's Thanksgiving and everything, so I don't mean to sound like a jerk...but come on!

brandonk Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 03:15 AM EST

Wow, Madonna has some good dancers! Pretty good concert, although the editing was way too choppy. I think the longest any shot was held was 4 seconds.

Carlos Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 10:18 PM EST

I totally agree with you Jon. Please haters stop it already!!!

Jon Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 08:30 PM EST

Millie,

Let's pretend she is "done"... she's had a 20+ year career span, has more fans than she knows what to do with, still manages to have her CDs go to No.1 in 29 countries (this, after being written off so many times by people like you), writes children's books, a production company, major ad campaign contracts with H&M, Versace (last year), etc... AND still has time to raise two kids, adopt a third and tend to a husband with an ego as large as hers...

What is YOUR claim to fame?

aron Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 08:22 PM EST

So are you Millie!

Millie Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 07:30 PM EST

Yikes!! Stick a fork in her, she's done.

Liza Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 03:07 PM EST

I have to agree with ABW. I saw Madonna live during the summer, she was AMAZING! but I was a little dissapointed with TV version, the constant camera changes and close-ups were irritating. It hurts me to say so, since I love her.

Nick Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 02:27 AM EST

ABW, be quiet.. thanks. :)

ABW Fri, Nov 24, 2006 at 12:31 AM EST

I think that all of you who got such a big buzz out of the Madonna TV special are going to wake up with a horrible headache. That program was one of the most obnoxiously edited shows I've ever seen. I was lucky to see the roadshow live on tour, and thought it was absolutely thrilling from beginning to end. The TV version, in comparison, was almost intolerable. The endless, non-stop quick cuts resulted in a never-focused blur that gave no sense of the rhythm, look and feel of the actual stage show. Instead, it was like two hours of flashbulbs going off in your face. This network special was a great opportunity for Madonna to display her underappreciated talent, vision and gifts before an enormous audience – and that opportunity was totally squandered.

blink Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 08:59 PM EST

Thanks NBC for showing the best concert ever!!! I took me back to july 23 when i saw live in Miami. I love how they edited, I was sad they cut the "Sorry" interlude since it was one of my favorite parts of the show. But still Madonna it's an incredible performer, and it blew me away once more.

Jon Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 04:27 PM EST

Ok, so I watched that concert three times now.. I taped it (yes b!tches, still don't have a tivo or DVR so it's VHS for me unless you want to help me upgrade) and I can't get over how great it was.

I was giddy like little school girl!... um.. boy?..boi?!

lol

jason Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 03:30 PM EST

with the exception of ALL the commercials (gotta find some way to afford madonna right? haha), the concert was a religious experience. i really liked the "new" version of "erotica", it was cool.

Michael Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 01:20 PM EST

Not the biggest fan of Madonna, but last nights concert on NBC was mind blowing. That probably sealed the deal. There really is no comparison between Madonna and any other artist (male or female) when it comes to putting on a show. That woman is not human.

patrick Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 12:27 PM EST

I couldn't believe I was watching a 48 year old woman last night. Madonna looked so good and sounded so good. My fave is the Music - disco inferno interpretation! Thats so much fun! Thanks NBC!

Brandon Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 11:14 AM EST

Chicken in a Biskit is the God of all foods.

Happy Thanksgiving, Slezak et al!

len Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 08:51 AM EST

Watched the Confessions concert last night, and all I can say is THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, NBC, for making my week!
Show me any other 48 year old woman that can do what she did on that stage, or for that matter even hold her up against the Jessica Simpsons, Brittney Spears, Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans of today - she blows them all out of the frickin' water!

popslop Thu, Nov 23, 2006 at 04:57 AM EST

Excellent concert. By far the best of her career. The brightest spot was the new version of "let it will be". The vocals where real and raw. The distortion, the aggressive sound, and the freak out dance style is better than any other offerings from any other POP artist around. Perfection.

shelby Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 05:00 PM EST

I, for one, Cannot WAIT for the Madonna concert tonight!!! It is gonna blow your socks off, and thats with the crucifixion scene missing among a few other great numbers! Her voice, dancing and artistry merging all at once on that stage is a true gift! No other artist can compete and that is why she is the Queen!!

Matt Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 03:02 PM EST

I knew I liked you for some reason.

Here I find out it's not because of your pithy and entertaining comments on pop culture, it's because you your culinary vision.

Chicken in a Biskit rocks! Now if they would only bring back my childhood favorite Dip in a Chip my life's journey would be complete.

monica Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:54 PM EST

chicken in a biscuit is so gross. my dad got them once instead of triscuits. THAT was a mistake.

junior Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

Hot damn, Slezak you cut out EARLY! I'm still stuck here 'til 6. You write about entertainment all day, get to leave early, have a fab husband, some guys get all the luck! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone too!

jonas Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 02:05 PM EST

I just can wait to see Madonna tonight. Oh my god that woman is so hot! Nathan of course her voice is good I went to the concert in NY and she rocks!

nathan Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:57 PM EST

Forget the crucifixion, what would really shock me is if Madonna's voice actually sounds good when she sings in front of a live audience.

Middento Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:48 PM EST

Frida has goiter? At least she know there's something going on...

(Happy Thanksgiving!)

Ellipsian Wed, Nov 22, 2006 at 01:32 PM EST

Happy Turkey Day, Slezak! Have a great one.
