'The O.C.': Once upon a time in Mexico

144023__ben_l Yes, The O.C. was on last night. You had no idea. There's a new one tonight, too, just in time for Thanksgiving. WTF? Fox, you suck.

The Cohens made a family pilgrimage to Mexico, which consisted of one bar interior and a very colorful coffee stand. At first, it was just Ryan's thing, but then Seth needed Chicklets and Sandy wanted to wear his cool litigator shades. Kudos to Kirsten for figuring out Seth's unnecessarily anagrammed note: "angry nudfo chocolate love" clearly meant "Ryan found Volchok." I appreciated how Seth kept pronouncing it "Vol-chock," just to be an ass.

"Mexico" just wasn't the same without the comforting knowledge that Marissa was rotting in an alley a few blocks away. Seth became puppetmaster for once: After getting plastered with the most obnoxious human on the planet (Steve-O? Ew!), he assigned Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie, pictured) and his parents to the same locale while he went to talk to Volchok himself. We thought it was Ryan banging on the door with his nightstick, but really it was Seth! Good fakeout there, with the decrepit building doubling as a magic funhouse. I bet the next door Ryan opened would have contained a bunny... or maybe a rack of rifles... oops, sorry, wrong channel. (That was Lost.)

So, much to Julie's chagrin, Ryan's back home, and Volchok's still alive (and seemingly quite repentant). Julie and Summer are still shutting out the peeps they love. Over at Brown, where there is no homework and one tree, Summer and Taylor barely spoke, which was actually better because Taylor got to interact with the student body ("Move it, hippies"), and the Mexicans who'd intercepted Seth's cell. Even better: Tia Carrere as the new Dean of Discipline. If she were president, she'd be Baberaham Lincoln.

Tonight, The O.C.'s first-ever group supermarket trip! Will you watch?

I really cannot believe I'm saying this, but after watching the 2-night O.C. extravaganza, I miss Marissa! Yeah, she was a terrible actress, her character had absolutely no personality whatsoever (other than she always did the stupidest thing possible) and by the end of season 3, she was down to infant clothing sizes, but it seems like Sethummeryulie don't have much to do without obsessing about what ridiculous bind Mizz M. has gotten herself into this week. And Yellow Bear, I mean Volchek (sorry, I keep using Annie's D.R. nicknames!) and Ryan should have an Odd Couple-esque spin-off!

I was hoping that Ryan and Volchock would fight until they started crying, and collapse in each others' arms, and then make sweet, sweet love...

But I guess Volchock will have to settle for that in prison.

Nice blatant downgrade from TV Watch. =o

Great show first season. Good season 2. Season 3? Doesn't exist to me. Shows hardly find their footing again after they fall. Season 4 just proves it's possible. And oh yeah, Desperate Housewives too. You see what happens when the creator's of their shows kick it in high gear again?

"Hit show! Oh, I'll take it for granted now! Oh crap, it turned Terrible! My bad! I care again! Great season, once again!"
People will never learn.

Who would have ever thought that Ben Mckenzie would turn out so hot.

Wait, can we all just take a second to acknowledge how great Ben Mackenzie looks in that photo? No?

Travis Thu, Nov 9, 2006 at 08:30 PM EST

The O.C. just gets sillier and sillier, but whoa is it still fun to watch.

I love this show and your blogs make it even better the next day. I'll be there for the Cohen Thanksgiving tonight and every week on whatever night it's on.
