'The O.C.': How Ryan got his groove back

175540__oc_l Welcome back to The O.C., lovely person! I've watched last night's season premiere 27 times on MySpace and I think I'm finally ready to write about it! Here we go.

Because The O.C. is a lot like Greek and Latin poetry, shiz began in the middle. Oh, "Hey." It's Ryan, washing his hands in his decrepit troll cave. I actually loved that we got to see this scene twice -- it made the haunting song extra goosebumpy, and I simply cannot get enough of dirty running water! The repetition also made Ryan's Fight Club-esque rematch against the nasty bald beast more powerful. Before, Ryan was in peak glutton-for-punishment mode when he chose to go up against the beast -- we can assume getting wailed upon has been a key part of Ryan's pecuilar grieving process. But after the family's intervention and some time to process what Julie wanted him to do about Volchok, Kid Chino the pugilist rallied for the win. (He got a good warmup from that uncharacteristic shove he gave Seth -- WTF was that?!) So now that he's reached inside to figure out how to nearly kill a guy, Ryan seems set to take it up a notch.

That comic book intervention scene was about 40 different types of cheese, and by that I mean awesome. It's so fun when you know you're gonna start crying in a few seconds, even though what's on your screen shouldn't really warrant it. But then, damn, Seth had to go and draw some classic moments, including the one with the bike and the skateboard and both guys' maniacally New Friends on the Pier grins, and I was a goner. The comics were great, but my fave part here was when Ryan grunted, "I can read." Sometimes we need a reminder! And the following Sandy-Ryan car scene was among that pair's best. Did anyone catch when Ryan slammed the door and tried his best not to look back at Sandy but then tossed a slight full-body jerk his way just to show he cared? Wow, I'm sick.

Summer (Rachel Bilson, pictured) was on hand to help orchestrate the Save Ryan campaign, but not before we caught her fabulously cliched dorm room and new friend Che over at Brown. It took me a full minute to process that she actually made it to college, and another to fully grasp the concept of Summer willing to associate with a chunky sweater striped in all sorts of earth tones. She flew back to Rhode Island before having any sort of meaningful conversation with Seth (save "Give a hoot, don't pollute"), but she'll come around within a few episodes. Girl's got to grieve. (If only she could watch this video of every time Marissa's said "Hey" over the years.)

Speaking of which, the Cooper women really delivered last night. Julie's oblivious "Oh, that's nice" reaction to Kaitlin's reminder that she wasn't at school because it was Saturday night was my favorite line of the night, and put me in an excellent mood just a few seconds in. The reincarnation of Season 2's Yard Guy, Julie is acting just like comic-book Kirsten, trapped inside an "impenetrable force field" with only odd jobs and pills to keep her company. She didn't even flinch when Dr. Roberts admitted to an affair with his ex-wife. Oh, and I love that after countless references to Summer's "stepmonster," we finally get to see her and it's just the back of her head.

Where is it all going? What does it all mean? How awesomely fake were Taylor's photos of France? Discuss.

I LOVED this episode, and having seen the next 3 as well, they just keep getting better. Everyone better watch Wednesday at 9 so they will move the show there permanently. I was so happy to see Chris Pratt, even if it did make me miss Everwood. Also, Grey's has been pretty boring this season, and I would gladly pick The OC instead...like there was ever a doubt in the first place.

the ep was good, still on the fence if i am gonna keep watching though...but i am soooo glad they got rid of no talent mischa. best thing they could have done.

OK...here's the deal. OC has SUCKED the last two seasons. BUT WAIT....ITS BETTER THAN EVER!!!! I LOVE THE NEW SEASON! I'm astounded at how good these new episodes are. We cannot let it get cancelled...

so to remind everyone...NEW episodes next week WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY at 9PM. The only reason FOX is doing this is they have a renewed faith in the show!!

jake Sat, Nov 4, 2006 at 01:15 AM EST

The OC will be on two nights this week -- wed at 9 and thurs at 9 -- both NEW EPISODES. If more people watch it on Wed after BONES -- it will move there permanently -- so please SPREAD THE WORD. THE OC back to weds at 9 this week! Congrats to Fox for making a quick decision.

love love loved it. the very fact that kirsten finally woke up from her robotic slumber was enough to make it good, but everyone else was in top form too. actually, maybe not taylor...yet.

Lorenzo Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 10:44 PM EST

Last night was.....okay. Like an apology letter given to the fans for all the suckage they brought from the past 2 season (ooh, evil Jeri Ryan!). The highlight of the episode was, of course, seeing Chris Pratt. God, watching him made me realize how much I miss Everwood. Wishing Amy and Ephram will get back together after they break up and break up and break up and break up and break up and break up and break up.

What was I was doing againg? Oh yeah. Before I go one last thing, I bet anyone a $100 that Summer and Ryan will have some type of love affair before the season is over. Watching Ryan and Summer talk in the bar made me think Ryan should've pick Summer all along when she wanted to "OC-ed" him (not very funny, is it?) but then again she was a super-b*tch in the first season.

The episode wasn't THAT great! Plus, they killed off the wrong Cooper daughter!

Karoline Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 07:12 PM EST

I am an unabashed OC fan - have seen every episode from Day 1 and last night's was one of the best. Josh Schwartz is hinting that this may be the last season - would love to see it go out in style. Luke's younger twin brothers are hilarious, Julie is in prime form, Ryan is back in pout mode, and Seth works at a comic book store! It doesn't get much better than this.

mike Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 06:44 PM EST

The best of the show was the song Running Up That Hill. It was an old Kate Bush song. It sounded like Plecebo singing.
Loved seeing Chris Pratt. They should bring back more actors from Everwood. Maybe they could move the show to Colorado. They could call it the E.W.

bub Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 06:28 PM EST

Ooh, Chris Pratt? Looks like I might be picking up "The OC" this year...

harry Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 05:59 PM EST

I LOVED IT. best episode in so long. where was everybody? People better watch or this show is going down like M.Cooper, yo. But by far the best episode in a 100 years or at least since mid-season 2 (Spider-man! Spider-man!) How great was the comic book scene. So cheezy and so awesome. And unlike Candace, I thought the comic book scene was cool because it didn't work and just made Ryan feel enough to become a psycho lunatic on the hunt of the unfortunately named Volcock. Season 4 could be the all-time season wehave been waiting years for. Fingers crossed. Unless FOX cancels it to air Justice every night of the week.

junior Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 05:54 PM EST

The O.C. is still on? Are you serious? Who knew? Um, I guess I'll flip during "Grey's Anatomy" commercials but without Marissa to laugh at, it's gonna be hard (more Ryan cage-fighting shirtless might help).

p.s. EW, love the demoted T.V. Watch within PopWatch!

Christina Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 05:33 PM EST

A very dark episode, but I loved it. I'm a little worried about the ratings though. Barely over 3 million viewers for the premiere is frightening.

Jenna Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 05:31 PM EST

I definitely agree with sam about Chris Pratt being back on TV!! Wooo next step, bring Everwood back. But back to the OC... I can't decide if I liked it or LOVED it. and was it me? or did Grey's Anatomy try to have some OC sounding music to rival last night...

Raegan Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

I have watched The OC from day one. I will continue to watch until the bitter end. I'm not a fair-weather fan.
Grey's who?

cRAIG Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 05:11 PM EST

not a bad effort at all, and I was more than prepared to jump ship after a horrid Season 3. but it's too little, too late. Summer and the gang won't have a Sophomore year...

theBigE Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:44 PM EST

Hey Candace, I didn't think much of the episode either. Big let down, and I've been a fan of the show since early Season 1. It reeked of Too Much Effort. Hope the next few episodes are better.

Candace Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:40 PM EST

Wow. I was tuning in hoping for some Slezakesque sarcasm and ragging. I must be the only person who thought they tried way too hard and delivered only a mediocre episode. The show didn't live up to my expectations for an OC premiere, though I have to admit that that creepy song was extra good. By the way that comic book intervention scene was about 40 different types of cheese, and by that I mean LAME. That was the climax that made him want to come home after they’ve been hounding him for 5-months, I mean come on.

Vicky Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:36 PM EST

Haha! Love the "Hey" Clip! Definitely a bright spot in my day.

sam Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:25 PM EST

The funny thing is, as someone who went to college in Providence, RI, I know about 15 guys EXACTLY like Che!

HOORAY to see Chris Pratt back on my TV!!!!!

*lauren* Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:15 PM EST

God, I love this show. it's the kind of show that I could watch episode after episode and not get tired of. This was a great big welcome back bear-hug after being gone for five months. OC how we missed you!

Aron Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:11 PM EST

I liked the episode.....and I really liked Summer. Actually wasnt to bad of an episode. I wonder if it was destroyed by Greys Anatomy in ratings.

ag Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 04:02 PM EST

The O.C. (gawd, how I've missed you!) proved once again last night that they do soundtracks better than any other show (overuse of "Halelujia" notwithstanding...)

jaime Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 03:48 PM EST

From that picture alone, I'm very convinced that Rachel Bilson is the hottest woman on the planet.
