'Women' on the Verge of a Remake

Murphy Brown creator Diane English has been laboring on and off for the last 12 years to remake George Cukor's 1939 film The Women, and the wheels are once again in motion, with reports that Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, Anne Hathaway, and Candice Bergen are attached to star when shooting begins in March.

One can only hope. Here is a list of all the women who have, at one time or another, been attached to The Women:

Meg Ryan
Julia Roberts
Candice Bergen
Blythe Danner
Marisa Tomei
Holly Hunter
Whitney Houston (oh, yeah, put her in it now, that'll be good)
Helen Hunt
Sandra Bullock
Annette Bening
Uma Thurman
Queen Latifah
Ashley Judd

On top of all that, at one point, Mick Jagger was said to have agreed to finance the project. James L. Brooks was originally slated to direct, followed by An Ideal Husband's Oliver Parker, and now English herself is said to be at the helm, although IMDb tells us that she's also got a movie called First Man, starring Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, on her 2007 schedule. (It is times like this that one questions IMDb.)

Anyway, what's all the hoopla? Hard to say. Originally a play by Clare Boothe Luce, The Women has been revived and remade many times (most recently as a 2001 Broadway revival with Kristen Johnston, Rue McClanahan, Cynthia Nixon, and Jennifer Tilly), and it's hardly the freshest concept (ooh, bored high society wives!). Still, if English keeps with the tradition of the original, there will be plenty of meaty roles on which the female stars may chew... and nary a man in sight; Cukor cast all 130 speaking roles with women.

Oh. I think we just figured out why this project can't get made.

I think Meg Ryan's name is attached to it because she has been the one trying to get the movie made for the last twelve years! She and Julia Roberts were supposedly doing it five or six years ago.....and then...nothing happened. I LOVE the original and hope the modern version will be just as wonderful. Candice is a terrific addition to any cast! I assume Meg is in the Norma Shearer role....with Lisa playing her best friend (Rosalind Russell's role) and maybe Anne Hathaway as the homewrecker ? (a very very young Joan Crawford.)That is hard to imagine.

I love Meg Ryan. Sure, she looks stranger now with all that surgery, but she's an underrated, good actress. She needs a good comeback, and hopefully this will be it.

I have been reading about this project for awhile. I think they know it has to be perfect to live up to the 1939 version. The good thing is that the real star of that movie is the dialogue. That said, it is hard to imagine anyone in the Norma Shearer role (Holly Hunter could probably pull it off) and whoever plays Crystal has to match up to, in my opinion, the best Joan Crawford performance. I will wait with cautious anticipation.

I'd be really excited about this if Meg Ryan's name wasn't attached to it. I mean, really, was no one else available?

Lisa Kudrow and Meg Ryan? I hope you're joking. Doesn't anyone remember the last movie they did together playing sisters? Ugh!

YES! I didn't realize I'd be so excited to see this news item, but I love "The Women." I hope some woman or women have enough clout to get it made. I would look forward to seeing a modern take on it.
