Is this Thomas Pynchon?

Pynchon_morph Check out New York forensic artist Stephen Mancusi's rendering of what the 69-year-old reclusive author Thomas Pynchon might look like today. The portrait, based on Pynchon's 1955 high school yearbook photo (one of the last known snapshots of the Gravity's Rainbow scribe), appears in this morning's print issue of EW alongside Ken Tucker's grade-A review of the writer's long-awaited novel Against the Day.

It's a little jarring seeing the bleary-eyed young author morph into Mr. Feeney from Boy Meets World, but it's also pretty cool. Mancusi's done similar portraits for people like JonBenet Ramsey and Marilyn Monroe. Who else would you like to see artistically aged?

I'd love to see them do J.D. Salinger, but if we have to wait until he has a new book out, it ain't gonna happen

“Pynchon's world is a place of chance, serendipity and constant coincidence.” - David Hellman

--Hey, me too!

Because… I was not intending to…

Because… I am a magical Pisces, like my boyhood hero Richard George Farina…to whom was dedicated Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow …

Because…a couple years after I moved to the City, I met Brice Marden [who married the third Baez sister— Richard marrying Mimi], and taught his son bass in exchange for 2 etchings…This trio of creative young men met at Cornell, some of whose exploits doubtlessly inspired Farina’s Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me

Because… I hardly ever take the bus anywhere…

Because… I did so in order to borrow a dvd of the new Roky Erickson film… [from a Gravity’s Rainbow youtube clip: “the music is 'Slip Inside This House' by Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators - a TP favorite”]

Because…I got out at 1st Avenue and 68th street in order to walk across town and Central Park to the theatre where my friend worked…

Because…I had the week before seen a Youtube feature on stalking Thomas Pynchon with grainy slo-mo footage of a figure allegedly him ambling a NY sidewalk…

Because…I passed a figure ambling north up the avenue [lots of hospitals there] with approximately the same gait; same hairlength, slightly greyer, mustached … had I blindly run out of the bus as its door opened, in the proper arc to head back down 1st to 68th, I’d have run right into this guy… I kept moving, then from a safe distance turned round to note: the receding figure wearing: sandals, shorts, shades, a loudish blue Hawaiian shirt; the legs fit, tanned; mustached indeed, a salt & peppery lip warmer, masking the larger front teeth of…a Mr Pynchon, I presumed, with all my spider senses humming!

Later, the fantasy: A meeting!, a description of my rare Roky dvd quest! “Wow! I’d love to catch that!” A doobie session over to th’ townhouse, watching… Harp glissando, fog, fade to black

I think he looks just like Cameron Diaz.

Actually, the author kinda looks like John Ratzenberg with a thicker mustache.

Wait, last time Pynchon came up, google searches were done and a few other photos came up. click my name for one that was taken in 1957. I seem to also recall that more recent photos can be found, but'cha gotta dig for them as they seem to be as reclusive as Pynchon himself.

James Dean....he was so handsome when he died; it would be interesting to see the handsome older man he would've become.

No no no...I've got for you all...

CHER!

Who isn't curious to see what she is REALLY suppose to look like nowadays, naturally aged without the stitching, pullings, peels, waxes, botox, and god knows what else?

I think we'd be in for the new face in horror. *gasp*
