Bond: Back, blond, and Brit-beloved

Nov 6, 2006, 05:23 PM | by Scott Brown

Categories: James Bond

143219__cr_l Attention, colonists: It is official. The British love their new blond Bond. As far as the papers are concerned, he's as good as knighted, his license to kill renewed at least for the duration of the Gordon Brown administration.  The Daily Telegraph says he "steps with full assuredness into Sean Connery's old handmade shoes" and has a face "like an Easter Island statue." They do not come out and say that some of his predecessors had faces like an Easter bunny statue, but they come close. They praise his tough physique and “acting.”

I haven’t seen this film. But that’s not going to stop me from agreeing wholeheartedly with these mysterious British critics. Or, at least, hoping they’re right. I’ve been a big believer in Layer Cake’s Daniel Craig from minute one, and the earliest trailers (with their tamped-down paranoia, flecks of inelegant brutality, and basic theme of “how a womanizing government thug becomes a debonair murder artist”) got my martini in a twist. (That last phrase… worst thing I’ve ever written? Or worst thing ever, period? Vote below!)

“How James became Bond.” That’s a nice tagline. We’ve all wondered. And this is not an acceptable theory, I’d argue.

According to http://www.rankopedia.com, Casino Royale is the second best James Bond movie ever, behind Goldfinger.

Anonymous Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 12:59 AM EST

Or perhaps after the age of 45, he could replace M or [even] Q and eventually became the director of the MI6?

Anonymous Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

There is also no Q or Miss Moneypenny.

Anonymous Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 10:48 PM EST

I wish that they would had this set just after World War II, so that it would be more literarily accurate. In addition, I feel that, since the world is beginning so globalised and the Cold War has been over for more than fifteen years, active espionage would not that exciting anymore. I think that Ian Fleming have had the literary character been born unquestionably in 1922 and "dropped out of school" in 1939 to fight in WWII. Then afterward, he could be a spy thoroughout most of the Cold War(mandatory retirement should be at the age of 65, rather at 45.)

Anonymous Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 10:35 PM EST

Mr. Craig is too uncouth to be James Bond. He is also not handsome or young enough(though not to insult him.) James Bond must be refined, for he is already openly immoral. Being both unrefined and promiscuous strains his character's admirability too much.

Robert Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 07:59 PM EST

Just because he was good in Layer Cake doesn't mean he'll be good in an action movie, let alone the iconic James Bond. Ladies get all googly over his body, but too bad his face is butt-ugly. It's cool that they're doing an origin story, but this looks like the Borne Identity. The problem here is that every guy wishes he could BE James Bond...I don't wish I could be Daniel Craig. Remember he was in Tomb Raider too.

Maggs Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 04:09 PM EST

Ok wait a minute...so if i had a nephew and they named him after me he would still be Jr?
Or maybe Mr. Bond is so sex crazed that he actually slept with his sister and therefore his son is his nephew and then he could be named after him and still be Jr...am i thinking too hard about this?

Martin Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

I heart Daniel Craig, too: http://moviemartin.blogspot.com/2006/08/simply-irresistible-pt.html

brandonk Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 02:23 PM EST

PS: My sudden possible openness to seeing the movie does not mean I agree with the casting choice or in any regard the previous four Bonds as "unmanly." Thank you.

brandonk Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 02:21 PM EST

OOOOH, dammit. I just saw a commercial for the movie and now I want to see it. I feel like a traitor to my long-held preconceptions and Pierce Brosnan!

Alice Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 02:19 PM EST

I don't get why everyone was so mad about DC being cast as Bond. His hair was too light? Are you kidding me? They finally cast someone for their acting skill NOT because he looked like a Ken doll with a gun.

Dave Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 12:36 PM EST

Love the concept for the movie, love that tagline, and absolutely love Daniel Craig as Bond. He is tough, hot, ruthless, hot, and the right actor to take the franchise in a new direction. And did I mention he's hot?

Mab Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 12:09 PM EST

I want to second Winn's rec for "The Mother". He a complete jerk...bad boy? But, God, he's just superb to watch in it.

kittycat Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 12:01 PM EST

Worst thing you've ever written but not the worst thing ever.

I wasn't sure about Craig until I saw the trailer with him walking out of the water in his little powder blue swim trunks -- then I became a believer -- YOWZA! First "real man" to play Bond since Connery. I'll be the first in line.

Anna Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 11:25 AM EST

Daniel Craig is only 35?! He looks a good 10 years older than that.

I'd always thought the worst thing written was:"And don't forget... I'm also just a girl... standing in front of a boy... asking him to love her." from Notting Hill but that Anakin quote is pretty bad.

no-idol Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 11:06 AM EST

I thought as Scott Brown did, from minute one, that Craig was an excellent choice. Bond's an attitude more than appearance. Anytime there was a pic or something from the film, all I could think was he's got what Sean Connery had that made him so great as Bond...and that is what's se*y. A confident man, one not afraid to get dirty, and who doesn't give a shi* what you think (do I look like I give a damn)....that is pure se* appeal...who cares what his nose looks like.

ag Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 09:31 AM EST

Daniel Craig is absolutely gorgeous, first of all, and he's mezmerizing to watch on the screen. I just finally saw Layer Cake, and he's amazing. I've been dying to see this new Bond flick, and I'm totally happy to see him and his performance turning the doubters around in the initial reviews.

Winn Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 09:29 AM EST

After the British tabloids decimated everything about Daniel Craig's casting, my first thought was, "Wait until you see the freakin' film!" Yeah, just like I thought, hypocrites! Daniel Craig is ultra hot and a brilliant actor. Everybody mentions "Layer Cake" and "Munich", but also check out "The Mother" and "Enduring Love" if you want to see more examples of his greatness, and his ridiculous sexiness. Hot, talented, believably tough and convincingly suave...Bond hasn't had it this good since Connery, and I loved Pierce Brosnan!

Karen Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 09:18 AM EST

My dh saw a pic of Mr. Craig in a magazine and asked, "Who's the ugly guy in a tux?"
That about sums it up for me. He looks like a boxer who's had his nose and other facial bones broken one too many times. I wouldn't have a problem with him playing another espionage lead, but James Bond? No. James Bond is supposed to be dashing and suave and debonair, not looking like he needs plastic surgery.

j.fo Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 09:08 AM EST

Not only do i think he's a fine actor, I am absolutely hypnotized every time I see him coming out of the ocean in that blue boykini in the commercial. My husband is mad jealous.

Brian Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 08:57 AM EST

The movie looks ok, Ill wait to rent it, not worth as trip to the movies

jakesboy Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 08:23 AM EST

Can't WAIT to see this movie!! I think Craig is going to be PERFECT as 007!

He's gonna be the Hottest Bond yet!!!

Nov. 17th!!!

Christopher Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 08:13 AM EST

Why on earth did you put the quotations around acting? He was brilliant in Layer Cake.

stef Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 02:49 AM EST

ahh
the blonde bond
i canNOT wait for this movie to come out
Daniel Craig ay be the best bond ever
bringing the franchise back
and hes dead sexy too

Doug Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 02:00 AM EST

Craig is simply not good-looking enough to be Bond, and at 35, he's too old to be "becoming" Bond and going on his first double-O mission.

Doug Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 01:56 AM EST

For me Craig just doesn't have the looks to be Bond, and at 35 he's too old to be "becoming" Bond and going on his first double-O mission.

brandonk Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 01:14 AM EST

So not interested. I like my Bond debonair, not thuggish.

Silas Bent Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 11:18 PM EST

Daniel Craig is so hot he’s ridiculous. I think old-fashioned gays would call him trade, as will I. It’s about time Bond was butch. Amen.

borf Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 10:30 PM EST

For the record, James Bond Jr wasn't about James Bond growing up. Jr was James' nephew.

Jen Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 09:32 PM EST

'martini in a twist', I like it. Of course, If you knew how many I drink per week, you'd understand why. I must spread your phrase among the lush community. In addition, thank you for that link to 'James Bond Jr." For the sake of full disclosure, I admit that I remembered the ENTIRE theme song. It has to be one of the worst ever written. Whoo!

Oscar Dahl, BuddyTV Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 08:57 PM EST

Daniel Craig is a very good actor. Just look at Layer Cake and Munich. Hopefully, Casino Royale will be a little less silly and more edgy that the last couple of Bond films.

Ceballos Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 08:42 PM EST

By the way...thank goodness movie producers behind franchises are casting people that can act first...as opposed to someone that "looks" the part. Imagine that...casting someone who can act to carry your movie...what a novel concept. First with Christian Bale in "Batman" and lately with Robert Downey Jr. as "Iron Man", I hope Hollywood keeps it up.

Fagqua Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 08:06 PM EST

I'm sorry but I'm going to unleash my gayness all over this blog. Daniel Craig is freakin HOT! I don't go to Bond movies because I don't like blow up movies; but when I saw him in those tight trunks I got all wet.

Daniel C does nudity like it's going out of style. An old copy of Playgirl has some frozen bits of his nasty bits. HONIES, DON'T LET THE SCREEN FOOL YOU, THIS MAN HAS A NICE ONE! He "manscapes" quite nicely too.

Everything about this man has me in a twist, I'll be first in line to see this new Bond movie.

Mr. Williams Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 06:51 PM EST

I am very interested in seeing the latest Spy Thriller starring Bond. Its time for the franchise to get back on track. . . Trying something new with the character will be a joy to see. Bond vs. Osama Bin Laden would be a great film. . . Bond teamed-up with Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner)and fighting SPECTRE would be an even greater film. Or how about a World War II black & white Bond story. . . See, the ideas are endless.

Miles Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 06:39 PM EST

I don't care if the last phrase was the one you ever wrote. All I care is that Daniel Craig is BOND, and I consider him one of the finest actors around. cannot wait.

Ceballos Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 06:28 PM EST

Everyone knows the worst thing ever written was this:

Anakin: "I don't like sand. It's coarse, rough, irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft…and smooooth..."

Ah...what will the movies do without George Lucas.

Lora Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 06:02 PM EST

maybe the worst thing you've written, but not even close to the worst thing ever.

Daniel Craig can twist my martini anyday ;)
