A staggering performance: Danny DeVito on 'The View'

Categories: Morning Madness

145952__devito_l A little math equation for you Popwatchers: 7 limoncellos + 60 inches of actor = 5 minutes and 51 seconds of must-see-TV on The View (and one prolonged shudder from Elisabeth Hasselbeck). Danny DeVito appeared on the hen-party chatfest yesterday, seemingly loaded ("I knew it was the last seven limoncellos that was going to get me," he chortled) after a night out on the town with pal George Clooney, and proceeded to hoot, giggle and flail his way through a fascinatingly uncomfortable segment meant to promote his new movie, Deck the Halls.

Most shocking moment? I'm torn between the rubber-faced mocking of President Bush -- he actually called him "numbnuts" -- or his fond reminiscences of christening all corners of the Lincoln Bedroom with his and wife Rhea Perlman's love juices. Then again, his nestling into Rosie's lap near the end sort of put the cherry on the whole freakshow sundae.

Personally, I think it was a nice break from the usual stultifying back-and-forth that is these shows' bread and butter, and it's unlikely it will harm DeVito's career much (Curses! Another leading-man role lost to that pygmy hosebeast Hugh Jackman!), unlike Michael Richards' recent tirade.

Still, The View is daytime, Danny -- next time, maybe, save the lewdness (and the limoncello) for Conan. What do you guys think?

Pretty much nothing notable happening. My mind is like a complete blank. I've just been hanging out waiting for something to happen. Not much on my mind to speak of. I just don't have anything to say. That's how it is.

This is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Devito is funnier and more coherent drunk than half the people I know sober. And while I've always disliked Rosie, at least she has a sense of humor about things. You wanna see embarassing drunk, go watch Ben Affleck groping his French interviewer back when while he was promoting Gigli. (It used to be on YouTube, but I guess it must have infringed some pointless copyright. Damn you Google!)

Mike Sat, Dec 2, 2006 at 11:05 PM EST

I don't really get why people are trying to make this a big deal. For a guy as drunk as he was, it really wasn't nearly as embarrassing as it could've been. "Numbnuts"? Who cares? A couple years ago Val Kilmer went on the Daily Show to promote Spartan and he was so high he could barely remember his own name. I never saw it mentioned on the internet once.

bb Sat, Dec 2, 2006 at 12:43 AM EST

DeVito was Larry,Curley and Moe all rolled up into one little bitty ball on Rosie's lap. About as unfunny as they come.

Lene Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 07:31 PM EST

I watched it and laughed me arse off. A non-scandla. Sure, dude shouldn't have gone on TV drunk (where was the producer who let him get on stage?), but compare this to Gibson? Get real!

EP Sato Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 04:42 PM EST

What a week for pop culture, huh? Naked Nana's, drunken Devito, the best episode of 30 rock so far, Wesley Snipes gets made fun of for tax evasion, Kid Rock got his heart broken, Beverly Hills Cop 4 is getting made and folks are saying that Federline should get custody.

Rose Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 03:45 PM EST

By the way, thanks for that charming reference to Danny & Rhea's "love juices", it's just what I needed to top off my week of Britney Spears' crazy, bald, out of control, v@gina! I'm definetly drinking heavily tonight!

Rose Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 03:35 PM EST

I call Bush numbnuts all the time, and I'm cold sober when I say it! I also call him "Shrub", "Commander in Chimp" and sometimes, just "Chimpy" - really, what's so shocking here? Go Danny!

Ned Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 03:30 PM EST

Wow, comparing this to Mel Gibson is really a stretch, to put it mildly. Gibson ridiculed an entire race of people. Devito goofed on one particular person, and not because of that persons race. The two are not comparable in any way. But, like I said, I wouldn't mind seeing what an inebriated republican would say about Nancy Pelosi, or Howard Dean.

EP Sato Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 02:07 PM EST

The President should get together with Britney Spears and do a cover of "Sugar (oh honey honey)".

It seems that since the election, he's become the guy to make fun of. First he loses the majorities in the House and Senate, he gets majorly dissed by author/Senator Elect James Webb and then DeVito goes and calls him numbnuts. It's hard out here for a pimp, and apparently, it's hard out here for a POTUS too.

bob Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 01:48 PM EST

Interesting how it is okay to Divito to be drunk and call the President names, but not okay for Gibbson to be drunk and make anti-semetic remarks to a police officer? As I see it they were both drunk in public and said things that people shouldn't say out loud and in public. Divito is celebrated for it and as Joy on the View says Gibbson should never work again. I guess it only matters if you agree with the drunk or not? That is what is so wrong in America now, wrong is wrong no matter if you like the person or not!

Watching the segment just helps to reinforce the fact that Rosie rules daytime. She's absolutely the most natural at interviewing celebs (way more than even Oprah and Ellen) and her hugging him at the end is priceless.

Ned Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

This proof positive that all guests on The View should be drunk, or at least buzzing, during their interviews. Sure, I agree with him about the prez, but that's not the point. Heck, lets get James Woods or some other republican actor on there after a few too many margarita's and see what they have to say.

jenjen Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 12:29 PM EST

If you believe the critics, Deck the Halls is supposed to be a terrible movie. I'm hoping this is just drawing some publicity to the movie.

Danny DeVito is my HERO! I haven't laughed that hard in a LONG time.

Kathy Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 10:24 AM EST

What was the big deal? So he was a little drunk and said some silly things. I saw the clip and didn't think anything of it until the media started in. It must be a slow news day.

Juju Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 10:14 AM EST

Danny Devito is a joke, period! Erica, please learn how to write in complete sentences.

EP Sato Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 09:59 AM EST

Danny DeVito's actions on the View lead me to believe his character in "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is not much of a stretch for him.

If this is true, I would really like to party with Danny DeVito. What a wild guy! Oh yeah, no DeVito comment is complete without giving some love to New Jersey.

graeme Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 09:43 AM EST

I saw the interview and didn't think it was inappropriate at all. I was expecting something more outrageous. If he hadn't said he was drunk at the beginning, would we ever have noticed anything?
What I really noticed about this segment is what an absolute pro Rosie O'Donnell is. Rosie kept the interview moving without being short with DeVito or showing her distaste (like the other 3 ladies did, including Barbara). Rosie needs to drop these pointless sidekicks and get her own show again.
She's one of the best.

Marc Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 08:57 AM EST

Oh I`m sure I came in to work a bit tipsy a few times after long nights of partying. I remember my boss passing out on our couch in the staff room the day after we celebrated her engagement. It happens to the best of us. Danny was funny and I fully enjoyed it. Ease up america.

Green Gummi Bear Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 08:50 AM EST

What I can't believe is EW prints "numbnuts", and people here post it and "douchebag", but this stupid filter won't let people post the name P-e-t-e-r or the word a-s-s-u-m-e

Jakeem Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 08:29 AM EST

Is Hollywood going mad? First, we get the tirades from Mel Gibson and Michael Richards. Then the invasion of the pantyless Britpack. And now Danny De Vito embarrasses himself on national television!
Is it everyone's goal to be featured on "Best Week Ever" or "The Soup"?

wow Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 05:39 AM EST

Danny was drunk.... i think most of us at one time or another can make the same claim. He was funny, and right on the head about numnuts. I think we should leave him alone

Tike Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 03:16 AM EST

I Loved Loved Danny's appearance on The View! It was great because he was Real and having seen his movies Deck the Halls the night before just put icing on the cake for me. Good for You Danny DiVito, this could be one of the greatest things you have done and as a result will certainly boosted your career!

Douglas Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 02:34 AM EST

This is the most entertaining Danny DeVito has been in DECADES! This is the first time ever that I wished I seen The View, a show you could not pay me to watch. Well, you COULD pay me to watch it, but it would have to be a LOT!.

Erica Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 01:06 AM EST

I am a born again Christian. Someone who Danny probably despises or thinks I am uptight or whatever. But he'd be surprised to see me defend his point of view. Not necessarily everything, but his right to say it. Going anywhere drunk like that is a definite no-no. He's an actor promoting a film. It's like going to work drunk, don't do it. As far as his opinions, what's the big deal. He doesn't like the President. Who does? I never knew numbnuts was a curse word. And they show more sex on tv then anything he was describing about Rhea. I am a proud American, but this country is full of hypocrites! And the View is such garbage. You go on their to promote a film, album, it's just boring and scripted. That's what that show needs, some spontaneity. Who cares if it's daytime, it's still boring! Barbara should be happy. Between this and the Rosie-Kelly Ripa thing, she's got herself an interesting show.

Ceballos Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 11:23 PM EST

I probably could've gone the rest of my life without having to read/hear about Danny DeVito's and Rhea Pearlman's "love juices". Triple ick.

Honeybee Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 09:32 PM EST

Danny's a family man that probably gets to go party only when he's out promoting a film. And partying with Clooney? Very cool. I actually loved that he seemed drunkenly obsessed with his wife of many years. Kind of adorable. He didn't make any racial slurs, he didn't yell. He's a cuddly drunk. And I'll bet he's not an alcoholic, either. He just partied too hard the night before his View appearence. There are worse crimes than that.

Oscar, BuddyTV Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 08:58 PM EST

That's pretty friggin embarrassing.

Karaoke God Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 08:06 PM EST

Really people..........this is the most non news ever. He was funny, didn't embarass himself or anyone else.

nathan Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 07:35 PM EST

AWESOME! Danny's officially kinda cool again. Just to know he's partying with Clooney is good enough, but calling the douchebag president "numbnuts" on national TV - sweet.

dan cullinane Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 07:10 PM EST

okay, so bush sucks and is a numbnuts and everyone knows that, but devito, seriously, he couldn't have been less funny or more gross if he started finger painting with his own feces, but then it is the view, so no one who matters was watching, and he probably knew that...the reactions were kind of hilarious, all these nattering eggheads trying to figure out what to do...except for rosie who was kissing his ass and egging him on like she didn't realize how idiotic the whole thing was...then again, she's usually as ridiculous,so maybe she didn't

Denise Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 06:21 PM EST

Haha, I saw this show. He didn't really seem drunk to me. He just seemed hilarious. I was laughing my head off during the Bush imitation.

Daniel Thu, Nov 30, 2006 at 06:14 PM EST

So what if he called the president "numbnuts". He's just telling it like it is. I can't believe they bleeped that!
