Trailer Blazer: 'The Good German,' 'The Painted Veil,' 'Dreamgirls'

144139__gg_l The Good German (Dec. 8) Oooh, 80 seconds of proof that George Clooney (pictured) is also handsome in black and white. I enjoy the gratuitious swirls of cigarette smoke surrounding the WB logo at the beginning and the title at the end. Whatever this movie is about (post-WWII Berlin), there will be smoking, which makes everything else more authentic. And Cate Blanchett smoking, at that. I can't stop replaying the part where she drawls in her best Euro-rific dialect, "You cahn't ever reeeeeally get out of Berlin." Well, no, not if you're going to keep saying it to me like that! One question: Clooney's an American journalist. Exactly who is the good German?

The Painted Veil (Dec. 15) "Is it a long-drawn-out affair?" asks Naomi Watts. "It's very painful," replies Edward Norton. So may the movie be -- it's about a cholera epidemic in 1920s China, and its tagline, "Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people," appears to have been lifted from a fortune cookie from that era. The trailer's quite lovely if just a touch dull. And who doesn't love misogyny? Show 'em, Na-om!

Dreamgirls (Dec. 21) Who even needs to see the trailer when the "You can do anything!" Kohl's commercial MTV makes you watch is so freakin' inspiring? It makes me wanna follow my dream almost as much as Jamie Foxx urging one of the ladies, "You gotta believe!" Man, Jennifer Hudson is really belting it out there at the end. And Beyoncé, for once, isn't overly styled and looks completely believable as a '60s icon. But can she sing? I'm on the edge of my seat!

Are you sure Dreamgirls is a good movie? I mean, it should be boring - 3 girls paving their way to fame... it's all very lame, don't you think?

It all seems very "STUPID" to me, the film - anyone who wants to change my point of view, my ears are opened.

Dreamgirls looks really good and so does The Good German. I will definitely see both.

Hmm...Dreamgirls is my pick...but I'll wait for the reviews. I saw the Dreamgirls trailer and I saw the Broadway show 2 times when Jennifer Holiday starred. As I recall it was very fast moving. Lots of sets moving around and great stage numbers.
Seeing the trailer, it seems that Terrence Howard would have been a better pick for Jamie Foxx's role...Foxx ain't doing it for me these days...he was a miss in Miami Vice...but most people will be seeing it for that one show stopper song...and Jennifer Hudson has a lot of AI fans still...so they will follow her to the well.

Dreamgirls - I saw the preview of this movie. All these critics was praising this mess before they even saw the preview. I wonder what they are thinking now, “damn I was stupid”
Beyonce with her one dimensional acting, Eddie Murphy should have been replaced by Terrance Howard. I mean the best thing about the movie looks like Jennifer Hudson.
Dreamgirls looks like a bad Lifetime movie of the week.

Dreamgirls will be a nightmare! Woefully miscast! And the singers aren't that great! Yuck!

Bob G. Fri, Oct 20, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

OK, I just got chills hearing J. Hud singing 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going' WOW !!!!! I cannot wait for this movie to open.

Is the one sheet for 'The Good German' intentionally trying to look like 'Casablanca's?

Miles Fri, Oct 20, 2006 at 09:17 AM EST

Dreamgirls and Germans, the blog carries heavy Oscar apirations. I cannot wait to see both.

Auriana Fri, Oct 20, 2006 at 08:27 AM EST

Am I the only person who has no interest in nor desire to see Dreamgirls?

aramis Fri, Oct 20, 2006 at 08:16 AM EST

Dreamgirls or Clooney?

Ballocks! How does one decide between such things? It's not fair I tell you! NOT FAIR!

It's like being stuck on a toilet with no paper after you've done number two, but you're dehydrated from having walked 50 miles in the Southwest desert, and you're forced to choose between a cold bottle of Evian, or a fresh roll of Charmin.

Obviously you NEED both. But the doodoo heads in charge won't let you have but one.

Cruel. Just plain cruel.

If I'm remembering the (amazing) book correctly, "The Good German" does refer to George Clooney's character--he lived in Berlin for years and returns to the ruined city during the Potsdam Conference to find Angelina Jolie's character. It's a GREAT book--soo many twists and turns in the murder mystery, so I have great hopes--and great expectations--for the movie.

But with George Clooney, how can you go wrong?

re: the painted veil

from the very "david-lean-like" trailer, it looks like it's going to be a great film. naomi is ravishing and shows great acting skills and emotional ranges there, and really drives the drama, as always. edward norton is equally good.

love you naomi! you'll be heading for the oscars with this one if things will run its just and fair course.

Slammy Fri, Oct 20, 2006 at 06:57 AM EST

I love you Naomi!
