Snap judgment: Fergie's 'Fergalicious'

Oct 23, 2006, 06:00 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

153212__fergie_l I've got to be completely honest: I can't really criticize any song that contains an interpolation of JJ Fad's "Supersonic," one of the most addictively underrated pop-rap tracks of my youth. And so it is that "Fergalicious," the second single from Fergie's solo debut, The Dutchess, gets the Slezak stamp of approval. Is it lyrically brilliant? With declarations like, "All the time I turn around, brothers gather 'round/Always lookin' at me up and down, lookin at my uhhh," I have to admit it's not. Are there tracks on The Dutchess that better showcase Fergie's pipes? Most certainly -- and here's hoping "Clumsy" eventually gets its due at radio. But does "Fergalicious" make me want to forget the fact that I'm O to the L to the D, and head to the nearest club to shake my groove thing? Absofergalutely, PopWatchers! Now whether or not the upcoming video for "Fergalicious," featuring a bathing-suit-clad Fergie wrestling with two other chicks in some sort of pastry batter, propels the song to "London Bridge" ubiquity, or earns her the unfortunate nickname of "Chocolate-Covered Pea," well, I leave that up to you. You can get a sneak-peek at the clip right now at AOL Music. Yes, Fergie-Ferg pops out of a cake. Don't say you weren't warned.

Woah, AND Afro-Rican's "Give It All You Got"... quite blatantly actually...

Jeff Fri, Mar 28, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

Actually, it wasn't "Razormaid," the Kraftwerk song was "It's More Fun To Compute."

Jeff Fri, Mar 28, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

Actually not only did fergie rip off Supersonic, which is the REALLY obvious one, but she also ripped off 2 Live Crew's "Let's Dance," Kraftwerk's "Razormaid," and if you're a conspiracy theorist like me, she also ripped off Stevie B's In My Eyes just a little bit in the instrumentals. I have no personal issues with people ripping things off; in fact I found it clever how she was able to rip so MANY things off at the same time. Right now I'm trying to figure out what she ripped off during the part where the beat changes and she says "Baby baby babay, if you really want mahy..." because I'm quite positive I've heard that somewhere...

Oops, I broke the page.

Fergie's had a surprising amount of backlash in the past year, considering the mondo success of the Peas and her integral part in the group. Maybe it's overexposure or perceived lack of musical sophistication. Or the haters hatin' just 'cause. Whatever the case, the album is a surprising, diverse, solid listen and "Fergalicious" a fun, throwback diversion that will keep me movin' until a deeper cut ("Glamorous" or "Big Girls Don't Cry", anyone?) gets her some deserved respect.

"The Dutchess" cd is one of the best cds I've gotten in the last few weeks, and unlike some people, yes I still go out & BUY cds as in going to a store like Best Buy to buy em!! "Fergalicious" doesn't show off her voice, and its not nearly as grating as "London Bridge", but if its a hit, regardless of the JJ FAD sample, thats a good thing, cause then perhaps some of the mid-tempo ballads like "Clumsy", "Finally" or "The Make-Up Song" will be released. Fergie has a great voice, I wish her record label would let her release a single that showcases her ability to hold a melody. Maybe one of those ballads will be released in time for Valentine's Day....

those bad comments on fergie's songs are "risicolous"....i love london bridge..

Doubleh Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 09:25 PM EST

Please save the sanctity of JJ Fad and stop thismadness. I'm
delicious! Please. Stop with ll the claims that you're a lady, Fergie
and just embrace your inner slut. And I'm not hating...I love the
album but is she up to a SuperSonic sample. I don't think so.

Some of you need to get hit by a car and dragged a few blocks till you stop breathing. All this disrespect thrown at someone you dont know is sad. You guys are a waste of space and if you have children i hope they get taken away from you and you never see them again. The world doesnt need anymore idiots raising idiot children full of hate and stupid things to say.

Some Guy Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 06:15 PM EST

The track is good but not the best out of "The Dutchess". I like "Clumsy" and "Finally" better. As for Gwen Stefani's new single "Wind It Up". I hate it which is sad cause i really like her. I just think it sounds too simple on some parts and too crowded on others. Its messy and it doesnt really have a melody.

cj Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 05:34 PM EST

this is bad for her,you hated london brigde and it was a hit so i guess this one is a dud

Tauwan Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 03:39 PM EST

By the way, have any of you heard the new Gwen Stefani track yet? Wonder what those who listen to Fergalicious think of that one?

Umm, this is a total rip-off of Teaches of Peaches. Peaches betta get on the phone with her lawya!

Tyler D Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 01:13 PM EST

Anyone else think that clip of Fergie being awe-struck by all the talent on the soundstage looks insanely fake - like a manufactured moment so she could look humble. Plus, is the concept of this video really "visionary" like they keep stating over and over. See, it's a candy world because Fergie is so delicious. Wow, that's about as brilliant as Jessica Simpson. I used to like the Black Eyed Peas, but Will.I.Am has really turned into an awful rapper/producer/artist.

Tauwan Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 01:07 PM EST

Ba-da-ba-ba-ba I'm lovin it!

The song is kind of lame.

You do know what this means, don't you? This means we have approximately seven months until Fergie goes on the daytime talk show of your choice (I'm guessing Tyra) and complains about how people just objectify her and nobody takes her seriously as an artist. Fifty percent chance of tears.

Start those countdown clocks!

carole Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 11:25 AM EST

FINALLY - someone else has heard Fergalicious - I've been raving about it for over a month now and everyone's like - Fergie? whatever. That track is so hot. Made me respect her.

mike Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 10:40 AM EST

The music Clear Channel calls hits are pathetic. I know I should yell, kids get out of my yard. The music still sucks.

dan cullinane Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 10:17 AM EST

fergie...? um...why are you talking about her? madonna on friday and fergie on monday? was there like some kind of musical rapture i missed last week where jesus took all the good music to heaven and this is all thats left to talk about? because that would really suck...it would be much better to be skewered on satan's tail and slow roasted than to have to live in a world like that...

Joe C Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 09:46 AM EST

Sorry, Tom, but I like Fergie, and I'm not a kid either. I think it's a lot of fun! Still loving 'London Bridge' maybe the song of the year as far as I'm concerned. Everybody: How come every time you come around/my---ah, you know!

Ed Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 09:45 AM EST

P.S.

Call, you're comment makes you an ugly person inside, stop the bitterness, love Fergie

Ed Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 09:36 AM EST

Dustin, I second your thought, Slezak's blogs make me giddy; I soon turn into one of my 2nd graders when our very hunky principal walks into the classroom.

...and about Ferg's new song, love the fact that it's a complete rip of Super Sonic AND hate it because everytime the the part of the song where she says, Rock-Rock (?) comes on, it makes me contort my face which eventually gets noticed by the person driving next to me.

Call Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 09:04 AM EST

Anyone wanna hear a secret? Fergie is ugly. Like a burn victim. Ugly like a Mack truck. And her songs are sh** as well.

Tom Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 08:18 AM EST

This so is a perfect example of all the crap they play on mainstream radio today. Who the hell listens to this crap? Awful song, so many artists out there who really deserve airtime cause they make good music. Don't get me started on this "Danity Kane" Sucks.

Dustin Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 07:55 AM EST

Couple things, one of which I was kind of beaten to already:

1) I had no idea magazine writers worked such hellish hours. This item was posted at six in the a.m. (!) and other than myself I don't know any gay man who'd even consider waking at that hour, especially if he had some tres cool job like writing for EW, which certainly equals some modicum of glamour and a late morning call time. I have to get up that early because being a graduate student means the worst hours in the world--but you, Slezak, are a paragon.

2) You've made scads of comments about your advanced age and other like-minded self-deprecations--but I can't help but think you're cute as all hell. The endearing charm of your blog-text--not to mention your decidedly twink-y taste in music--puts me in mind of sexy dimples and firm, high, rounded buttocks. I second poster Allen's question, and implore you to post some sort of photographic material of yourself so we can see if I'm right about your hot ass, or indeed if you have dark circles under your eyes resulting from rising pre-dawn to make blog-posts.

Allen Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 07:26 AM EST

"the unfortunate nickname of "Chocolate-Covered Pea,"

That is too funny...are you as cute in real life as your words lead us to assume?

Danna Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 06:12 AM EST

Is it just me, or does "Fergalicious" sound just like "Batty Rap" from Frengully?

josh Mon, Oct 23, 2006 at 05:27 AM EST

Does she piss herself in the video?
