Isn't it time for an Elliott Yamin update?

Oct 30, 2006, 11:21 AM | by Michael Slezak

94252__elliot_yamin_l It's been 7 hours and 89 days…approximately, anyway... since I last blogged about Elliott Yamin. I came to this realization when I tried to use my E-card this morning, and it was declined. Clearly, this situation needs to be remedied, and fortunately, the most charming and naturally gifted vocalist of American Idol's fifth season is making headlines today, allowing me to do just that. Woot!

According to MTV News, Elliott is touring with Taylor Hicks' former band Little Memphis Blues Orchestra; but the folks at Yaminions.com say that's not the case, that LMBO merely backed Elliott during his recent gig at the Virginia State Fair. To which I say, WHY HASN'T ELLIOTT BEEN SIGNED TO A MAJOR LABEL YET?!?! Whew. Sorry 'bout that. Okay, I'm calm now. Really. But check out these YouTube clips (thanks to PopWatcher Justin Castillo for the heads-up) of E-Double and LMBO performing "Use Me," "Little Ghetto Boy," "I Believe to My Soul," and "Whipping Post," and tell you don't feel the outrage a little, too.

Elliott is awesome! He is on Little Memphis Blues Orchestra's new cd, "Live at Workplay!" The CD is absolutely fantastic and Elliott really sounds amazing on it!

lindagt Mon, Jan 29, 2007 at 07:42 AM EST

Michael, did you see the press release about Elliott's "partnership" with Sony publishing, RED Distribution and Hickory Records - the imprint for his self titled CD - coming out March 20? A single - "Movin On" will be released on digital media by Feb 13. I actually had a little sneak peak and Michael - you will not be disappointed :-)

Linda Mon, Jan 29, 2007 at 06:33 AM EST

Elliot deserves success - Can't wait for the CD - he has lots of fans out there!

Lisa Erdner Wed, Jan 24, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

It was just announced today that Yamin will be releasing his first CD entitled, 'Elliott Yamin The Album' on March 20, 2007. He has his first single coming out, 'Movin' On', which is going to be released in mid February.

Here's the website with more details...

I really hope Elliott comes out with a cd because he would be my #1 favorite from Season 5 American Idol. people in my family are probably going to buy me the rest of the American Idols cd, but I was really hoping Elliott's would be the first one I get, but I don't think it will be. Good luck to you Elliott and your makeover is so amazing. I had no clue who you were until I saw your name!

Still Waiting Sat, Nov 25, 2006 at 09:14 PM EST

Yeah, I am still waiting for an Elliott Yamin cd to come out. Any idea when?

wyatt Sat, Nov 4, 2006 at 09:57 AM EST

Check out Elliot's version of "You've Got a Friend." Only a true artist can take a tired old song like that and make it his own.

Lothlorien Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 08:57 PM EST

Thanks for the mention, Michael. We too are eagerly anticipating a cd release. I echo what most have been saying on here, that perhaps the wait would be better for him in that we can make sure he won't be saddled with pop crap and that he can veer away from the AI-stigma as far as possible. As always, we on the etrain pace back and forth with you, eagerly awaiting for the cd to drop.

Carol Diehl Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 04:41 AM EST

Elliott is a true "artist', I totally agree with the .. not taking the high road & comprising his music, like the man said "Clive iat your heart out "

Megan midgette Wed, Nov 1, 2006 at 08:01 PM EST

One more thing. Get a life spud. I'd like to see you try and sing. haha. you're probably only bashing him because you clearly are jelouse of all the love elliot is reseaving. hahahahaha.

Megan Midgette Wed, Nov 1, 2006 at 07:57 PM EST

wow. THANK YOU! Elliot still makes my heart melt even after he left on idol. Yo, he is THE BEST singer I've ever heard on idol and the fact that he doesn't have a record deal yet makes me ponder. Does it have something to do with his apearence? He has already said he was willing to get teeth straiteners, but still no record for him? WOW! Elliot, even if you don't get a record deal ever, I wanna let you know if, by any chance, you are reading this that I WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR NUMBER 1 LOYAL FAN. so peace out guys and keep the elliot love comin'. :)

Gogo Wed, Nov 1, 2006 at 12:52 PM EST

I liked your article. It was short and to the point. Elliott is growing and I hope will continue. Unfortunately, AI isn't truly a talent contest. It's a popularity contest. When they get true talent, they don't know what to do with it. Elliott will be laughing all the way to bank.

daisy Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 06:28 PM EST

thanks so much for writing about Elliott, Mr Slezak, the best darn singer to grace the AI stage, I will be listening to him for yrs, and will wait patiently for him to make his beautiful music, with that gorgeous voice

sange Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 05:06 PM EST

Thanks Mike for the Elliott mention-truly you are a smart man and knows real talent when he sees it.I wish Elliott didn't have to have that AI cloud over him though, but I believe with everything in my soul that he will make it big for many many years to come! He's just toooo good! His cd will be hot just like his concert was,and I have no worries about him.He WILL be a major success!

Ginger Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 04:18 PM EST

Doxiechick from etrainstation.com thanking you for the wonderful things you say about Elliott. We know this man is heading for something big, and we all anxiously await the news about a deal!

Sandy Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 01:58 PM EST

Thank you for the Elliott Yamin article. Elliott has a large following of dedicated fans who are eager to hear and buy his CD. If the songs are anywhere equal to "I Love You More Than I Can Say", this guy should go far.

suzanne Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 11:20 AM EST

I miss Elliott. It's seems just crazy that we haven't heard that he's been picked up by Universal Urban, or Blue Note, or Columbia, or something. I know that some artists go out on their own, but how can that work w/o a money machine to publicize a CD?

Nancy Walker Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 09:16 AM EST

Elliot is the real thing! I believe he will overshadow Taylor Hicks when his album finally hits the music scene. And this is not to say I don't like Taylor, because I think his voice is decent;but Elliot's voice is better. As far as Clay goes, still like him, but his CD was a washout. I am disappointed in this too slow covers album. And for sure it was suicide singing Foreigner's music.

Sayuri Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 08:32 AM EST

Thanks for mentioning Elliott!I'm feeling a little anxious about his cd,well, just the date of releasing, because I know his music will be wonderful, just like his voice.

Vee Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 07:56 AM EST

I love Elliott's beautiful voice. The man was born to sing. He wants a career not a flash in the pan, and I am delighted that he's taking his time, and making choices to ensure that his music represents his style and showcases his talent. I will be first in line when his CD finally arrives!

Crazycate Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 07:42 AM EST

Elliott is the best thing to come onto the music scene in a long time. I think he is a rare and superior talent whose star will shine very brightly soon. I can't wait for his album, it will be fabulous; just as his concert was. Thank you Michael for keeping him in your best thoughts.

Norm Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 07:18 AM EST

I took bathroom breaks when Elliott Yamin was on AI. However, I've seen him in concert and wouldn't have believed a singer could grow as much as Elliott has. Yes, it's time he got a contract; he has proven what he can do and he has blossomed into a stage presence. And what a voice!

Brenda Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 12:32 AM EST

I can't quite listening to "USE ME". That one better be on his CD!!! Love that man...

Linda Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 12:06 AM EST

Many thanks from www.etrainstation.com for posting this Mr. Slezak. You've made legions of fans very happy!

Cathy Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 10:22 PM EST

Michael, Thank you -- we fans are anxious for an update. We know he's in the studio working with Josh Abraham, Derek Bramble and DJ Lethal (per his recent interview with Shirley Kennedy in the National Ledger), but we're hungry for more. What makes me happy is that we aren't getting "another American Idol CD" -- we're getting an "Elliott Yamin" CD and this man is GIFTED. I can't stop listening to my homemade CDs. And "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" from his solo concert in Richmond is pure magic. So I'll be patient, because I believe that he is worth it.

Ellipsian Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 09:04 PM EST

Elliott rules!!!

That is all.

Lu Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 09:03 PM EST

Elliott will put out a quality album that will be worth the wait. This guy has is a huge talent and has a huge heart to match. Go Elliott!

Kathy Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 08:18 PM EST

I definitely am outraged that the best male vocalist AI has ever seen has not been signed to a major label! But, I have no doubt that Elliott Yamin will be a huge success. I am trying my best to be patient!

Alice Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 07:46 PM EST

Thanks Michael for the update. Can't wait for Elliot to release something, anything!!!!

Vivi Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 07:36 PM EST

I love me some Elliot Yamin!!!

I miss you, Elliot.

David Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 07:31 PM EST

Michael,
Thanks for keeping us informed about Elliott. I went to his solo concert in Virginia and it was excellent. He really has grown as a performer. Can't wait for his CD.

Carla Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 06:09 PM EST

Thanks, Michael, for giving E a mention. I can't wait until he comes out with his own cd and yes, if he doesn't get signed to a major label and distributed everywhere on earth it is an outrage! Best darn singer to come along in years, and not just on American Idol.

Mary Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 05:47 PM EST

Phil, Ruben is doing pretty good.

* "Return" CD: #2 R&B/Hip Hop, #8 Top 200
* "Change Me": #2 Adult R&B, #23 R&B/Hip Hop

Mary Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 05:42 PM EST

I don't care to purchase AI albums. I want quality not karaoke.
I will buy Patrick Hall's album and when Elliott releases his I will definitely purchase his CD.

Mary Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 05:39 PM EST

Benito,it's obvious that Elliott is going the route of cutting out the middleman. He's rumored to be hooked up with the FIRM and this is their busines mode.

Mary Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 05:38 PM EST

Jen Jen...you are right. Elliott's first record will isn't going to be a rush job. Remember Bat Out of Hell took 4 years in the making, and Meatloaf didn't have a label for that one till it was finished. (I don't think he did.) At any rate ..what a success story.
Believe in yourself and Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down.
Meatloaf said to his band, I'm a train and you can choose to follow behind in a car, or you can hook on to the train.
This ETRAIN is hooked on to Elliott.

yxyou Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 05:16 PM EST

Mike,
Thanks for remembering Elliott. He still has many fans and I am sure that his CD will sell quite well. He is probably the only one out of all AI 2005 contestants who will gain more fans after his association with AI will be forgotten because of his amazing voice.
Just listen to 'I love you more than you will ever know' on youtube. It's a masterpiece.

I CARE ! ! ! ! I don't think of Elliott Yamin as "from American Idol". He has already moved beyond IT. I think of him as the Best Damn voice ever. He will be legendary, just watch and see what this man accomplishes.

Lorenzo Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 04:41 PM EST

I am posting this everywhere, so forgive me if you're annoy.

http://www.niggaspace.com/

How can something like this exist? Why hasn't no one taken it down? I hope someone at EW checks it out and writes a blog about it because as a person of color, this offends me more than anything that Flava Flav could do on his TV show (which actually I like).

linda Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 04:36 PM EST

The very fact that a major label deal has not been announced yet says to me that he is doing his best to get away from Idol and on his own - he's not going to be a pop star - he's going to be a legendary artist - if you don't believe me - check out the YouTube video from this concert of I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know.

paige Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 04:27 PM EST

cancel studio 60!

Connie Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 03:48 PM EST

Spud,

How could you possibly think is appropriate to call Mrs. Yamin a "crypt-keeper monstrosity" and hope that she dies? Have you been practicing that one in hopes of making the finals on "Yo Momma," because it's a) not funny b) incredibly rude. Using terms like "charity case" and "troll" is just uncalled for -- you may not appreciate his music but there is no reason to attack him personally for his looks or personal situation.

spud Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 03:04 PM EST

I am probably in the minority when I say to quit gushing over the troll! He is a zero-prescence Mr. Tumnus wannabe who puts his spin on songs in an annoying way that's even more difficult to watch. Fine soe other charity case to back and quit whining over this one. BTW, has that Crypt-Keeper monstrosity he calls his mother shuffled off this mortal coil yet?

Dani Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 03:01 PM EST

Michael:
I too loooove Elliot but I've been waiting for a blog about a much more pressing topic. What is your snap judgment on the new Beyonce single/video to "Irreplaceable"?

Phil Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 03:01 PM EST

Does anyone really truly care? I'm not an Elliott hater, but seriously this time of year just means a slew of crappy albums from American Idol winners, alums & runner-ups..and I've honestly gotta ask DOES AMERICA STILL CARE? Everyo ne from these blogs knows I hate Clay Aiken, but his album's been out for a month now, & yeah its a crappy covers album, but even I would have guessed he'd still be hanging in the Billboard top 10, but he's not. I didn't have high hopes for Reuben's latest cd either, but his sales were even lower than I anticipated. Though Mario Vazquez dropped out of the competition after securing his spot in the top 10, his single, "Gallery" has been all over pop radio & MTV since June & his cd came out a few weeks ago with barely any significant impact. Kellie Pickler's album drops tomorrow, but she's appealing to the country crowd, so thats kind of a different animal all together, but like I said, DOES ANYONE REALLY CARE TO PURCHASE AMERICAN IDOL ALBUMS RIGHT NOW?? I'm going to go out on a limb and say the saturation point has been reached...

Beth Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 02:50 PM EST

Yes. Somebody. Please. Sign. Him.
Before I, and many like me, forget about him altogether.

aramis Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 02:21 PM EST

*blinking stare*

Uhm, Slezak, my good man...I'm with you on most issues, but...WOW...It's hard to follow you on this one.

"American Idol" is pure example of what's wrong with TV and MUSIC these days, which includes yuks - though, talented - like Yamin. If they were really talented, they would steer FAR away from AI, period. Look how long it took Kelly to shed her AI stigma (which included cutting everyone off altogether who had anything to do with her stint on the show and her crappy first album).

If Yamin were to make it - I wish him well that he does - he needs to run FAR AWAY from anything to with AI, period.

Benito Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 01:38 PM EST

Michael, maybe this would answer your question:

ARTISTS PRODUCE ALBUMS ON OWN: DIGITAL MUSIC CUTS OUT STUDIOS

http://www.nydailynews.com/business/story/...3p-392455c.html

*Artists are singing a different tune as they increasingly bypass the major record companies to make CDs -- solo.

*Everyone from one-time teeny bopper heartthrob Hanson, to quirky pop act Barenaked Ladies, to hard rockers Motley Crue are on their own.

*The rise of digital music sales has made it easier for artists to cut out the middleman. Almost any artist can sell songs on iTunes.

*The Internet is also shifting the power away from the majors. While once artists depended on their record companies to promote their songs to radio stations and MTV, now social networking sites like MySpace.com are the place to break records.

Are Elliott Yamin and his cousin, Josh Abrahamn going this route? If so, my kudos to them. (Clive Davis, eat your heart out!) It will give Elliott's fanbase the impetus to be proactive, to be empowered to work their butts off on his behalf.

RBlues Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 01:33 PM EST

WHERE IS ELLIOTT'S CD?!

We love you Elliott and are waiting "PATIENTLY". It reminds me of what my grandma used to always say. "Anything worth having, is worth waiting for", but c'mon already!

ernesto Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 01:22 PM EST

Let's face it, Elliott will have a hard time being a pop idol but once he gets a record deal, he'll be the one winning the grammy's.

JenJen Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 12:37 PM EST

Elliot is the only one to try and score a contract outside of the 19 label that all the other Idols sign to. He also doesn't want to rush and record a crappy album just to get it out before Christmas time (unlike Ruben, Clay, Katherine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, Kelly Pickler, and Taylor Hicks). At least that's what he said in the EW interview at the end of the Idol season!

In any case, I applaud him for not taking the easy road and compromising his music. BUT, I do hope he gets a record contract soon. The music industry would be crazy to pass on such a talented and charming person!

Joe C Mon, Oct 30, 2006 at 12:08 PM EST

Keep pushing for your guy, Michael. I certainlythink he'll have a longer career than that curly haired chump who lost to Kelly in season 1, Justin-something
