Snap Judgment: Clay Aiken's new single

Sep 7, 2006, 10:42 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Music

93845__clay_lRegular readers of this blog know that I'm not exactly Kathy Bates to Clay Aiken's James Caan, and that I had some reservations about the American Idol runner-up's choice of the oft-covered "Without You" as the first single off his long-awaited  new disc, A Thousand Different Ways. Yet even with lowered expectations in tow, I'm still finding myself disappointed by Clay's adequate yet utterly predictable interpretation of Badfinger's ballad, which is now streaming for free at his official website (click here).

Sure, the dude can sing -- and in an era where Paris Hilton is a top 20 act, actual vocal ability is, well, hot -- but Clay's "Without You" sorely lacks the anguish of Harry Nilsson's Grammy-winning rendition, nor does it have the sheer melodrama of Mariah Carey's. Worst of all, though, Clay doesn't take any chances with the song's phrasing or melody or arrangement (the way Kelly Clarkson did when she tackled "Without You" during the first, Dunkelman-assisted season of Idol); as a result, Clay fails to (in the words of Paula Abdul) make the song his own. I wish Clay had tried stripping it down and slowing it down -- to turn it into a heartbreaking dirge. Or perhaps attempted to infuse it with an ambient, loungey vibe. As it stands, though, his "Without You" inspires neither love nor loathing, just a shrug of this blogger's shoulders. What do you think of Clay's new single? Let 'er rip in the comments section below.

The funny thing is his next and latest CD, "On My Way Here," was even worse than "A Thousand Different Ways!" I don't understand how he keeps his recording contract. He should be dumped. He didn't even try to promote this latest atrocity for the record company. He's not touring, but going back to do "Spamalot." On the other hand, who would go listen to him sing those horrible songs on OMWH anyway?

m Thu, Oct 18, 2007 at 10:37 AM EST

It's interesting to me that you 'blame' Clay for the song choice and pharsing when BOTH were Clive's decision and choice. Maybe you need to talk to HIM...or maybe you already have.~G~

mandy Thu, Dec 14, 2006 at 07:51 PM EST

clay has an incredible voice and " without you" is the the sweetest song. Clay made it sound so beautiful, i love it!!!

El Stinko!!!

patty Thu, Oct 19, 2006 at 10:05 PM EST

Way to go Phil......yeah eventually he convert a few more... the mans voice is one in a million.. Just needs the right record company to see his potential.

Phil Thu, Oct 19, 2006 at 07:05 AM EST

Clay has finally won my respect. At least, "I want to know what love is" sounds good. I have been listening to it every morning since buying the CD last week. Oh well, if you can't beat them, join them. Now I am a Claymate.

Juju Sun, Oct 15, 2006 at 11:41 AM EST

I see Phil finally grew tired of posting. What is with threatning other posters?

patty Thu, Oct 12, 2006 at 08:44 PM EST

I am not disappointed in his album at all. I am disappointed in the pre promotion which he did not get. Yeah he got a TV time after the album was released.

What bothers me is that he wanted to do a more upbeat album and "rock" which I am seen him do and they pushed him to do this album (although if you just love the voice I am not disappointed, I love it.

I have faith that he followed his obligation the RCA and will push forth to do what he wants. We have not seen the best he can do.

I am in for the long haul.......Go Clay! Also I am proud of him for standing up to the press and saying "what I do in my private life is none of your business". Well Done!

Jessica Thu, Oct 12, 2006 at 08:04 AM EST

Leave Mike alone! I can just imagine how gorgeous he thinks he is.

Nancy Walker Thu, Oct 12, 2006 at 07:59 AM EST

I love Clay, but his album is a major disappointment. I have yet to listen to it again. I hope next time he will get original material he can truly call his own.

ray Thu, Oct 5, 2006 at 04:33 PM EST

beloved by millions of people....Where were all those millions when clay's cover album droped? going from 600+ to less than 300,000 (multiple buying of course) not a sign of growing as an artist, it seems he's loss a lot of fan's. I felt so sorry for him on LK, Larry's facial expression was priceless when he ask clay if he wanted to come out, I know clay will do the right thing when he's ready...I wonder does the music industry know's he's a star?

patty Mon, Oct 2, 2006 at 09:55 PM EST

Did you catch "American Idol Rewind" the other night? When they said, when he sang "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me.", they knew they were standing in front of a "star".

Enough said, give him time to grow and yes, he is a star and he will grow into someone amazing and beloved by millions of people. Just give him a chance.

Some choices have not helped him but he will eventually make the right choices and his voice will shine. I believe in him and what he wants to do. Be negative if you want. But I think he will show us all... Regardless of his song choices so far, I don't think there is anyone that can say that he can't sing. It just takes time to find the right groove and he will find it.

Big Momma Fri, Sep 29, 2006 at 09:47 AM EST

LL, I totally agree that everyone has the right to choose their favorites. However, when groups of obsessed wackos attempt to force feed the rest of us and/or get downright nasty if someone doesn't share their enthusiasm for a particular personality, I for one take offense.

LIBERAL LOSERS Fri, Sep 29, 2006 at 02:43 AM EST

LOL......YOU PEOPLE ARE A BUNCH OF IMMATURE ASSES....

CLAY HAS HIS FANS JUST LIKE TIMBERLAME......SO WHAT!!!!

ITS A FREE COUNTRY......THANK GOODNESS"!!!!

LIBERAL WACKOS ARE OUT!!!!!
ROTFLMAO

yawn Fri, Sep 22, 2006 at 09:57 PM EST

This whole "Claytastrophe" is getting to be a HUGE bore...don't you claybots have ANYthing else to do? Y'all are only surpassed in the ability to bore us to tears by the flying monkeys when they come out to drool over their wind-up idol.

cooka Fri, Sep 22, 2006 at 03:15 PM EST

Cooka, What do mean we are being cruel? All we said was
Clay was a k.d.Lang wannabe...and you have to admit he looks just like her.

MIke | Sep 22, 2006 9:21:12 AM

Ewwwwwww!!!! you did it again!!! my poor k.d. lang.

yawn Fri, Sep 22, 2006 at 12:24 PM EST

k.d.lang and Clay Aiken ARE the same person.......have you ever seen the two of them TOGETHER???????

MIke Fri, Sep 22, 2006 at 08:21 AM EST

Cooka, What do mean we are being cruel? All we said was
Clay was a k.d.Lang wannabe...and you have to admit he looks just like her.

ray Thu, Sep 21, 2006 at 11:00 PM EST

His sales are as phony as a two dollar bill, the mates are going on a super buying spree, to try and beat JT in sales, the only difference is JT has earned himself grammies for his acomplishments, I think those mates are the reason why clay is getting dumped on, thoes mates are his worst nightmare.

patty Thu, Sep 21, 2006 at 10:18 PM EST

You won't see any results until next week! They only update it once a week. Then we will see. I think he will do well - but I would imagine he will do well because he is standing up to the press. Regardless
of what people say, he will not bend and I respect him for that.

yawn Thu, Sep 21, 2006 at 10:01 PM EST

Just checked out the Hot 100 over at Billboard....funny, didn't see any sign of Clay or k.d.lang. It's BEEN two days since the release...whatsa matter, Claybots, didn't get your allowances yet?

patty Thu, Sep 21, 2006 at 07:29 PM EST

Yeah I caught the interview, and even though he "skated" around the issue, I thought he has held up his integrity and said "it is none of your business!"
Gay or not the guy has guts! He's done with it and people can think what they want and that is his position. I have to admire his stand and "to heck with
everyone", attitude!

Phil Thu, Sep 21, 2006 at 06:55 PM EST

Has anyone seen this interview with Diane Sawyer when she asks Clay if he is gay & I swear I saw the entire ice rink FORM in front of him as he SKATED around the question, and ultimately called himself stubbon, when Diane asked him how long he can hold this position, & rather than just fessing up, he doesn't say no, he actually claims its RUDE to ask & accepts its part of her job, but WHY DOES IT MATTER? Way to go Clay. Seriously.

Its official God blessed him with an incredible voice since he seemed to omit his cajones!

ray Thu, Sep 21, 2006 at 02:04 AM EST

Does Clay have any interest in being taken seriously as a artist, or is he fine being used as a short-term cash cow? This is why I never got doing a covers album. I would have respected him if he had fought for more original material.

This album isn't going to expand his popularity, it isn't going to garner critical praise, the material isn't even something that challenges him. This is basically a AI memorabilia album.

This is definitely a regression for Clay.

T Wed, Sep 20, 2006 at 10:25 PM EST

I agree with you 100%. I was a Clay fan from the beginning, and I have bought all his cds, book, dvd, joined the fan club, but his new album is disappointing. It's so slow and soporific. I wanted some originality. Rehashing others' songs is not going to get him the radio airplay he wants (I think). He's got to take some chances and this album was way too safe. I thought his first was much better.

cooka Wed, Sep 20, 2006 at 01:37 PM EST

You guys are so cruel. What did k.d. lang do to deserve this kind of insult?

MW Wed, Sep 20, 2006 at 08:49 AM EST

I JUST LIKE TO SIT BACK AND ENJOY AND LISTEN at home and at work. He has beautiful music I can play at work and not be afraid of being fired!!
You think people that love Clay's voice and his selection of music is wrong, well that's too bad. I don't like music that degrades women, when you watch them on TV it's bordering porn, where men have a thing about grabbing their crotch. I'm enjoying seeing love get back into the picture and I'm hoping more of our youngest will be guided towards this type of music.
He has a great voice and seems to be a great guy. I just enjoy his voice.
Kinda wish he would get away from Clive Davis and do more of his own stuff.
I think your critique is wrong!

patty Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 10:32 PM EST

Why do you poeple have to be so cruel. Why can't you just let us who like the guy enjoy him. Why beat him down? I do not go on any other singer's site and say mean and cruel things. It just seems so unfair and meaningless. Yes, if you want to comment on his album, absolutely, you have that right, but to mean just is not necessary. Make a constructive comment fine, but to put the guy down is not fair.

I want so much to enjoy his music and to hope others will appreciate it too but there is no reason to be negative and cruel. Okay, I know you will be mean to me now but I just don't get what you are about? It is just music and everyone has their own taste but it is not necessary to be abusive, just a nice critic is all we ask. JMO

MIke Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 09:23 PM EST

Hey Yawn, That was a good one. Clay does look like
k.d. Lang, now that you mention it.

yawn Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 07:15 PM EST

"His music" consists of covers of songs made popular by OTHER people, his voice is mediocre at best and his picture STILL looks like k.d.lang in jr.high! As for his personal life, I for one, simply do not care.

patty Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 06:58 PM EST

Big Momma, I have tried to discuss his music but if you read all these posts. Many are not about his music but his private life! I would prefer to just discuss his music but it always seems to roll around to his private life not his music or his voice.

Big Momma Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 08:10 AM EST

Patty, we have been discussing Clay's music, not his sexual preference.

Big Momma Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 08:09 AM EST

Patty,we have been discussing Clay's music, not his sexual preference.

ray Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 03:43 AM EST

Well clay's album has hit the stores, and the mates are up to there same old buying strategies, all the sell's in the world will not help clay get recognition from the industry, or gain him new fan's, he has the same old american idol groupies, I blame the claymates for his downfall, they have done everything in there power to cause none fans to hate them and clay, there bragging and putting other artist down has help seal clay's down hill spiral...there's still some more of clay's cover cd's left on the shelf, you better go and buy up the rest to pad his first weeks sales...have a nice shopping spree.

patty Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 10:00 PM EST

Okay I am a Clay fan, Okay I like him, Okay I am not a "Claymate"! I really don't care what any of you say, I have listened to music for many years and his is the first music in a long time that I REALLY enjoy. You don't, so what! It is just my opinion, not yours!

I like the guy, gay or not, I LIKE HIM! He is funny, goofy, charming, and has a good heart. What is wrong with that? Did you see Leno the other night? I was actually there! I enjoyed him and Howie! Very funny. You may not like him but he does have a comic instinct.

He can sing, he can zing them back with the best of them, and he wants to help people in need, that is a rare combination. He has a great gift of comedy, sincerity, and music. I see nothing wrong with this package, except that the people who won't just let him be himself, whatever that is.

Get over it, he has a gift of making people laugh and be happy.. is that wrong? Gay or not I really enjoy him.

MIke Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 08:23 PM EST

Well said Phil, We are with you guy!.

Phil Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 07:58 PM EST

Ok, so I haven't been on this blog item for a few days, and I just popped in here now and I'm like where did ALL that come from??

jane, I'm far from lonely, and actually I have quite alot of friends, in fact, so many, that none of them even know I even partake in these such blogs!! I am one of the most loyal friends one can ever have, I would do anything for my friends, but I don't understand why you would question my social circles when I've never come off as lonely or pushing my agenda onto anyone such, as people like Millie on this board. I am confident in my posts because I am sure of myself, & my opinions, that does not make me egotistical.

Millie, I thought I was done with you last week. I'm going to assume thhat you were either drunk or drugged up when you made comments regarding my mother. Last time I checked, my mother doesn't use a computer, or even have an email address, let alone would have anything to add to any discussion regarding clay Aiken, since she doesn't even know who he is. Please stay on topic, and if you should happen to mention my mother again, TRUST ME when I say I will have the entire board oust you. Its poor taste to attack a woman who would probably think you're mental and need medication for even bringing her up in a so-called blog. She doesn't even know what a blog is. SERIOUSLY!

FYI, Clay's album comes out tomorrow, so I expect at LEAST a couple comments from the insane ClayMates tomorrow. My money's going to Fergie and Lupe Fiasco's new discs.

yawn Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 05:48 PM EST

Be careful, MIke, you may have to relinquish your "DUMMY OF THE YEAR" title if you keep making SMART comments like that!

Blogzilla and her ugly stepsisters "JuJu" and "Jane" won't like it if you steal their thunder.

Big Momma Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 10:34 AM EST

ok, it appears that the,"Lollipop Kid(s)", have taken the hint and vacated the board. I am not sure how far away the sewer is from their present location, but I have no doubt they will find their way back.

MIke Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 08:15 AM EST

Millie, So this is the name you are using now?
I had rather be dummy of the year than moron of
the BLOGBOARD!!

yawn Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 06:55 AM EST

JuJu/Jane/Millie:

Do you really believe that we don't KNOW you are all figments of someone's incredibly inferior imagination?

And why do you only come out in the wee small hours of the morning? Is your casket being fumigated then?

Maybe you should eat your SPINACH, Honey, so you can be free of the world of the undead once and for all!

Millie Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 01:49 AM EST

Phil you should be enrolled in English 1B, and take Yawn, and Big Momma with you. Since you are such a genius with words, why don't you write a paper on your mother? She is a true source of excellent material. I didn't want to spill her secret, but there is talk going around a local police department about her "friendly ways." She has gotten out of more traffic tickets than Michael Jackson has had nose reconstruction. Do not waste all this wonderful material when it could prove to be your pot of gold. When you are done writing about her night walking, you can write about an idiot who goes by the name "Yawn" on a message board. Please do not forget Big Momma with the powerful handy-dandy dictionary. She will prove to be invaluable to you when you run out of witty sayings and ideas. Please be good to her, cause I know she is being good to you.
Take care, all the best to you both.

Millie Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 12:41 AM EST

Mike:
DUMMY OF THE YEAR 2003-2006. Congratulations! You are a strong candidate for the year 2007 as well.

Jane Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 12:33 AM EST

Phil you are one lonely guy! You have an entire board supporting you? You will heckle someone to death? I hope you have true friends, not make believe ones on a message board. How low can you go? You are probably the first boyfriend Big Momma has had in years. Mercy dates can be fun.
Yawn: Please get off your soap box. You are a a bore!

Juju Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 12:21 AM EST

Gee, I have been missing alot since the last time I was on this board. Yawn, anyone can sound intelligent with a dictionary right on top of a desk. Do you honestly believe that you can tell someone's intelligence by some post?
I can see that Millie has been stirring up trouble, but you are no better than she is, because you are answering someone you consider annoying.
Bert and Phil are just pitiful! Yawn even you can sound smart. You should not assume that you are the only one with an extended vocabulary. You have taken ego to a new height.

yawn Sat, Sep 16, 2006 at 09:17 PM EST

Turn down the volume, please, Mona....it's not necessary to yell.

mona Sat, Sep 16, 2006 at 09:08 PM EST

yawn Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 08:12 PM EST

If you thought the "Claybots" were out there on the warning track, just wait until the flying monkeys get here.

Bert Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 08:09 PM EST

Oh no please, not the Soul Patrol!! This could lead to the last of the sane people evacuating the board.

MIke Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 07:10 PM EST

You got that right Reina. Nobody trashes TayTay.

Reina Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 05:34 PM EST

With all of the arguing and name calling resulting from this blog, can you just imagine what would happen if someone (Slezak, are you listening) was to write something negative about Taylor? Lord have mercy, the "Soul Patrol", would be "Out of Control."

ernie Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 05:01 PM EST

Don't sweat it, MIke.....Ernie is cool with it!

Heh,heh, heh!

MIke Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 04:47 PM EST

Add three cheers for Ernie also. Don't know how
I left Ernie out in the previous post.
Sorry Ernie.

ELMO GO BACK TO SESAME STREET NOW.

One of these things just doesn't belong
Can you tell which thing is not like the other

Bert Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:35 PM EST

I could definitely get used to that Yawn.

yawn Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:22 PM EST

Might I suggest "Blogzilla",Bert, as a fitting moniker for Thoroughly Miserable Millie?

Bert Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:04 PM EST

Monster, this from the Bride of Frankenstein.

yawn Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 10:23 AM EST

Millie, I don't recall addressing my remarks to you specifically, but since you insist on injecting yourself into every situation, I will do so now:

Maleficent
Inconsequential
Ludicrous
Laborious
Immaterial
Effigy

Do you have a dictionary, Honey? Look up the big words so you can understand what a poor excuse for a human being you truly are. Afterwards, try to get your hands on a book of etiquette (you know, MANNERS) and see if you can find out how to participate in rational, civil discussion. Then, take a typing course, or stop drinking (or both) so that when you DO feel the need to share your inane thoughts with the adults on this board, they will at least approach some sort of sense and hopefully, intelligence.

My apologies to Phil, who assuredly could have done a much more superior job with the "poetry" than my effort. He is a genius because he succinctly stated the malodorous essence of Millie in seven witty lines.

And one more thing before I dismiss you, Millie.....you obviously know NOTHING about Big Momma.......she is one hot Bronx Babe with a lot on the ball, and you are no match for her intelligence, womanhood and verbal ability.

Big Momma Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 09:09 AM EST

Hey Phil, thanks for taking my back. I really do enjoy reading your posts as well as Yawn, Nancy, Stephanie, Ray and Vivian etc. This was supposed to be fun, or so I thought. However, I don't think we should let the rantings of a very angry, obviously unhappy, person ruin our time on this board.
I don't think I have ever seen anyone go to such great lenghts to spew viciousness and ill will. I hope this person does not go about her everyday life with such an attitude as this could lead to some very ugly situations for her.

Perhaps, if we really do ignore her, she really will go away.

MIke Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 07:05 AM EST

Millie you are a complete A--hole.

Phil Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 01:10 AM EST

Oh and Millie, IF I were a PILL, I'd be ecstasy, cause I make all the non-ClayMates FEEL GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 01:07 AM EST

Millie: I critiqued you and at the SAME time STAYED on topic. All you did was TRY to come at me and Big Momma. Do us ALL a favor, and go buy Clay's new cd next Tues. and lock yourself in a room and listen to it ALL day....oh a padded room, with no way out in case you didn't understand!!!

Don't TRY and come for me if you can't even stay on the topic of the blog girl. I'll heckle you to DEATH EVERYTIME, and I got an entire board supporting me WHILE I do it!

Millie Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:50 AM EST

Yawn:
Phil is a genius? Thanks for letting everyone know how low you IQ is. What discovery has Phil made? What is he so famous for that makes him a genius? Did you leave your thinking abilities on vacation?

Jane Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:46 AM EST

I don't know why Millie is wasting her time with a guy who is obviously suffering from low self-esteem. There is no way Bert nor Phil have someone in their lives or they would not be on this board 24/7 trading insults with a woman they don't even know.
Millie: That is not nice what you said about Big Momma. You should not insult someone for being overweight.

Millie Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:41 AM EST

Yawn:
Too bad your brain isn't working. Park your rear, take a load off before engaging your mouth, but of course you need a brain to do that.

Millie Fri, Sep 15, 2006 at 12:38 AM EST

Phil you are a pill. At least this time you have shown some spunk and creativity in your words. Too bad they came from a silly jerk! And Big FAT Tub A Lard Momma, go take some pounds off at Jenny's. They have taken the door off so you can fit through it.

Pathetic
Has-been
Irate
Loser!
Mountain Climb
Onion Smell
Malicious
Mousy
AH? What is it?

Bert go back to where you came from.

kathy Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 05:44 PM EST

I usually listen to easy listening and soft rock radios. That's where I heard most of the songs which Clay covered. I think all of Clay's covers are not as good as the originals. I don't mean Clay didn't sing well. He hit all the notes there are. But somehow his version devoided true emotions and he made all of them sound alike. Actually I made a playlist with all the orginal songs I got from Itunes and it was a much more pleasurable listening experience than I got from Clay's CD. I suggest you try it too. Those songs are not half bad.

I don't remember those original songs in Clay's album. That means nothing really stands out and grabs me. Lonely No More is probably the most decent one.

Phil Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

Big Momma Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 01:56 PM EST

Lovin it Phil, just lovin it!!

Phil Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 01:05 PM EST

Millie, Millie, Millie!! I'm always Phil, and I'm NO ONE else. Its my REAL name, its what I go by, since I have nothing to hide, no hidden agendas or multiple personalities, its the ONLY name I use!

Perhaps some of you twisted ClayMates that use multiple blog names and/or handles should take the same advice and stop trying to promote your hidden agendas through various different names. And since you wanna be this STUPID...

Manipulative
Insipid
Lilttle
Lapdog
In service of
Evil Master Clay!

Now begone! You have NO POWER here!!!

comment Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 12:30 PM EST

Claymates are so transparent. Trying everthing to sell you beloved master, eh? Putting that "I'm really not big a fan of Clay, But..." first doesn't give your opinion any more credibility. Yes, there is always a huge BUTT. lol. "it's my sister.." "it's my wife..." "it's my mom..." What's next, mates, it's your dog...? lol

Bert Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 09:34 AM EST

Good one Millie, go take a shower. Right up there with pop a mint or slay a dragon.

Are you kidding BERT? You could never hurt my feelings. No one cares what you have to say. BERT or PHIL, who ever you are today. You are not that important. Go take a shower.

Bert Thu, Sep 14, 2006 at 06:20 AM EST

What's wrong Millie, did your feelings get hurt? You're pretty good at dishing it, but can you take it??
When you have a minute go back and read your posts. Anyone who does not share your opinions is automatically labeled STUPID. This site is for everyone to express their opinions and by the way Miss Thang you are no lady .

I just finished reading one of your previous posts Ray. You are a joke! It is obvious that Clay is going to bounce back from the ugly scandal that you so purposely will keep harping on. Are you stupid? How could his problem be the result of his fans loving him? You should go write for the Globe rag newspaper, or the Examiner. You would probably invent some whopper-of two-headed monsters, or baby with three heads. Maybe you will put yourself in a silly story and sell millions. I hope you do, maybe, just maybe, we will never hear from you again.

Since when has Clay been in competition with Josh Groban? They are two totally different types of singers. Josh Groban is an awesome singer in his own right. Clay is awesome doing his type of singing. Even if the whole album is full of cover songs, he covers them well! I am looking forward to his new CD being released.

My Mom Wed, Sep 13, 2006 at 08:51 PM EST

I have to say something here, my mom is a huge Clay fan.
While certainly I see no appeal to him except that I did
go a Christmas concert with her last year and even though I had trouble actually watching him, he really does have an amazing voice.

My point here though is, I have not seen her this happy in years. She is having the time of her life! She has made many new friends, she travels, she has conquered the world of computers, digital cameras and I am proud of her! She is still a vibrant, attractive women and many of my friends say they think is great that she is out there having a ball, rather than sitting home doing nothing like their parents.

I have absolutely no interest in Clay Aiken, but I have to appreciate the fact that he has brought joy and happiness to a lot of people, young and old. That alone is enough for me to have a little respect for his appeal.

Phil Wed, Sep 13, 2006 at 03:17 PM EST

Oh and since SO many of you "fans" of Clay have also professed your love of Josh Groban, HOWEVER WILL YOU CHOOSE XMAS GIFTS now that this was just announced:

I guess Clay has a month and a half to ATTEMPT to rack up sales til Josh drop's his latest disc, which BIG SURPRISE ain't CHOCK full of covers!!!

I admit, I'm having WAY too much fun today.....

Phil Wed, Sep 13, 2006 at 02:04 PM EST

Ok, so I'm sure most of you ClayMates are counting down the days til next Tuesday, when u can rush out and actually buy (multiple copies) of Clay's latest release. But for the rest of us sane people, the day we look most forward to is 2 weeks from TODAY. Yes, ladies & gents, thats the day Billboard will release the sales figures for the new releases that come out next tues, September 19th.

Not only does Clay have to worry about Mr. Timberlake's 2nd week of sales, but he also has to contend against the debut of Fegrie's solo disc, "The Dutchess", Elton John's latest, as well as a live set from Kenny Chesney, Mexican hot mama Paulina Rubio, teen sensation Jesse mcCartney, hip-hoppers Bone, Thugs, N Harmony and Chingy, who also currently has the #1 Hip-Hop & R&B track on the Billboard charts with "Pulling Me Back". Throw in a dash of rock-n-roll with New Found Glory and Jane's Addiction's latests, and I don't see an easy road ahead for Mr. Aiken, SO PERHAPS he won't have a #1 debut after all!! Hahaha

Tracy, if you are sick of me go to the doctor for a prescription. If you are sick enough, you just made fade away. Good try though.

DK you know talent when you hear it. If you buy Clay's music you wont regret it. He has a beautiful voice, as you already know.

I just listened to Clay's album, not a big fan but I wanted to give it a fair chance. Some of the songs don't appeal to me but I thought he gave a fresh new look to a lot of these songs. I grew in this era and I honestly liked his interpretation of these songs.

When I listen to a lot of music out today, I can't say I enjoy it at all! I find Clay's voice refreshing. You can appreciate the melodies, you can understand the words and the accompliment is spot on. The songs themselves may not be your type of music but I appreciate his effort to sing them in the spirit in which they were written and I actually enjoyed this album very much, I just might have to buy it, I know this goes against the general discussion, but I think he has made an honest effort and I liked it.

Thankyou Phil and Mario for your response, but I won't mention Madonna again because some people can't take the heat.

tracy Tue, Sep 12, 2006 at 03:22 PM EST

Clay has an impressive range, he can hit some high notes. But I don't find anything stand out in his tone quality, he sounds very bland and pales in comparison to Josh Groban's and Michael Buble's rich, smooth baritone.

Suzanne Tue, Sep 12, 2006 at 02:53 PM EST

I listened to it. The accompaniment, and especially the bass, overpowers the vocal (especially on the first chorus "I can't live . . ." in the lower octave), which I don't get at all b/c the best thing about Clay Aiken is his tone quality. I agree that it isn't very original until the last third of the song, but honestly, I liked it. I liked it far more than many, many things in current release, but it paled compared to Nilssen--obviously. I mean, you could hear Harry's voice. (Why do producers cover up a good voice with loud accompaniment? why o' why o' why?)

tracy Tue, Sep 12, 2006 at 02:45 PM EST

Idol fans are all so weird. Claymates, Soul Patrol..... they all buy loads of their masters' cd and send to troops. Imagine Clay telling soldiers in Iraq Measure of A Man and Taylor telling them Take It To The Streets.
LOL!!!

coco Tue, Sep 12, 2006 at 02:40 PM EST

I bet 80% of Clay's cd end up in used cd store as usual. That's why on Amazon, there are tons of MOAM selling at $0.99.

Avickdore Tue, Sep 12, 2006 at 01:35 PM EST

I just finished listening to the snippets. No life, no artistry what so ever. He's just capitalizing on what's already been done knowing that his fans will snap it up. This album of covers is strictly for Claymates, no one else. It was a very smart move by RCA to do this. Clay's never been challenged vocally. He doesn't HaVE to and he knows this. It's all about the amount of CDs he will sell and Claymates have been ordering the cd since before the album was announced. They should have racked up tons of them in orders by now so yeah, he should sell well. Don't be surprised if you receive a Clay Aiken CD for Christmas. They (Claymates) have to find some creative ways of getting rid of all the extra copies they bought.
