Well, JimK, I have absolutely no idea who said that the bands themselves have a race problem. U2 and Greenday are two of the more open-minded mainstream bands that I can think of. I'm also well aware that white people live in New Orleans and that many white people died in Katrina. I'm not saying that their sacrifices and loss aren't worthy of attention, or that they can't take joy in celebrating the survival of their communities. Did I ever state that only African-American interests should have been addressed during the concert? I'll be clearer - I'm not saying that the celebration should have only paid attention to the interests of the African American community. I'm just saying that it would have been nice to see some sort of African-American culture/performer involved. I'm not sure what it says about me that I'm the only one you've witnessed bring up the race issue. I would hope that it just means I noticed the entertainment during the event was fairly safe and targeted towards certain demographics. I'm sure U2 and Green Day have a relatively diverse audience, but I would also assume that their fans are predominantly Caucasian. I probably have just as much of a "race problem" as the next guy. I wonder what it says about you that you feel so threatened by the "race card?" Oh, and why exactly do we always HAVE to get along in favour of entirely ignoring the issue of race? Is some sort of bland agreement that everything is fine more preferable? Why can't race be a topic of discussion? Or just because we read EW, is this another one of those instances where we should not think and just be entertained.

The show was great, but I wish they had New Orlean's rockers, Better Than Ezra on the bill. I have seen all of the groups that performed live, and Better Than Ezra can rock with any of them.

Tyler, are you unaware that white people died in Katrina? Are you unaware that white people lived, and still live, in New Orleans? Beyond that fact, why on earth does that matter? Why the frig do you feel the need to play the race card over a football game's musical entertainment? They got U2 for the love of God...arguably one of the biggest acts in the known universe. It was nothing more than a mega-band coming to celebrate the re-opening of the Superdome. And yet here you are, seeing skin color and using it as a wedge to create dissension.

I'll bet you fancy yourself a progressive, open-minded person too, don't you? You're the only person I have seen *anywhere* online who noticed race and color.

What does that say about you? I think it's demonstrative of the fact that you have the race problem, not the acts that were playing.

I really liked it, much better than most of U@, who I usually dislike. IT rocked. Good times and a nice emotional feeling. It's obvious the crowd was into it, screw some whiny punks on youtube.

Why didn't they give the Rebirth Brass Band, a group from New Orleans, a chance to play? Of course "the New Orleans-style brass meshed suprisingly well with Edge's chiming guitar," the band was subjected to jive-ass harmonic backgrounds. Boo Greend Day. Boo U2. What a wasted opportunity.

I like U2 and Greenday, but I thought it was kind of strange to watch a celebration of New Orlenes and not have some sort of African-American performer involved, considering most of the communities that suffered the most from Katrina and the lack of government support were prodominantly African-American communities. I mean, U2 and Greenday are like two of the whitest bands ever, and while I realize that doesn't exclude African-American audiences from enjoying their music (and I realize the NFL has to be family-friendly since they exposed us all to nipple-gate), I'm just puzzled that some musical-artist-of-color wasn't involved. Even if they had some traditional jazz music, it would have seemed more appropriate.

The whole pregame was great. Started with Green Day and the edge on "wake me up when sept ends" - just a very fitting song to open up the superdome and for New Orleans. Then came Bono with the rest of U2 for "the saints are coming" - which I thought was ok but was interesting to see the 2 bands play together - and then ended it with "Beautiful Day." It was a classy pre game opening and hopefully the Super Bowl folks will take note and have a decent half time show this year.
