We love John C. Reilly

161041__john_c_reiley_l You know how there are some actors who deserve to be much bigger movie stars than they are? The ones who watch their higher-paid counterparts get all the glory, while they're the ones with all the strength? (Oh frack, I just sorta paraphrased ''Wind Beneath My Wings.'') Any-hoo, one of those thespians might actually be on the brink of much-deserved household-name status (and the cash-money that comes with): After rockin' the bejeezus out of supporting roles in movies as varied as Chicago, The Good Girl, Boogie Nights, and Never Been Kissed (among others) John C. Reilly has signed deals for lead roles in two comedies with Columbia Pictures this week: Step Brothers (which will reunite him with his Talladega Nights costar Will Ferrell), and Walk Hard, from director Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and writer Jake Kasdan, about a folk singer who indulges in all the wretched excesses audiences have come to expect in musical biopics. In the words of another amusing gent: Respeck. Booyakasha.

Allrite! Chicago born and bred. rack up another incredible talent from my town. BTW, you should see "Hard Eight" and "Criminal" if you are a JC Reilly fan

Hopefully it'll be more of a Gene Hackman situation where a character actor seamlessly graduates into lead roles. LOVE Mr. Cellophane!

Let me clear my throat. As the fella who's been singing my main man's praises all summer now, it's time for me to say it:

SHAKE AND BAKE!

Jon C. Reily is one of my favorite character actors. I hope he, Steve Buscemi, Gary Cole, and Adam Baldwin get together for something very soon.

Loved him ever since he was in For the Love of the Game. Best of luck to him in the future!!

I agree some actors should remain character actors and though I love John C. Reilly (especially in Chicago and The Aviator), I think it's worked for him thus far and he is best suited as that.

And ANOTHER movie with Will Ferrell?!! Not a good career move. Ugh, now there's an actor who is overated and has reached over-saturation (how he has become A-list is beyond me).

Marshall Marshall Fri, Aug 11, 2006 at 11:20 AM EST

Good for him, he does rock. But Christ, don't feel sorry for the guy just because Tom Cruise gets bigger roles. Don't be a retard. He's a f***kin ACTOR with a real career. He's famous and a lot wealthier than most of us, hangs with hollywood, gets everything paid for, can party anytime he wants, and gets huge accolades for it. And because he gets ugly guy roles he doesn't even have to work out! There NEVER EVER should be feeling sorry for these people. They have unimaginably easy and fun lives and you are an idiot if you get caught up in some vicarious emotional battle over their supposed 'deserved level of fame.' ...and I would bet you C notes Reilly would agree.

I am a huge John C. Reilly fan, and I am very happy that he is getting a break to star in a film ... even if it is next to Will Ferrell (who's best role on film to date, in my opinion, was in "The Producers")

But I truly do believe the John has more than enough talent to hold his own in a leading role, I love him in everything he has ever done and he has constantly had to save films from weak leads. It's about time his talent was recognized. He should have no problems carrying a film with his excellent talent.

EW"You know how there are some actors who deserve to be much bigger movie stars than they are?" Yes I do, but I don't think he's one of them. He's a good backup character actor, but he's no leading man. He was ehh... pretty good in the movies he's been in, but the place he's at is where he needs to stay. Some actors were born to be sidekicks. I think John's one of them.

Boogie Nights is one of my favorite movies and I suggest for some great hilarity to watch the scene where Mark Wahlbery and Reilly are in the studio recordings songs they're so convinced are going to be hits!

blackpower Fri, Aug 11, 2006 at 09:15 AM EST

John C. Reilly has been my man since he played "Chest Rockwell" in Boogie Nights. I also loved him in THE GOOD GIRL and the PERFECT STORM. If you get a chance, put the Boogie Nights DVD on the disco dance scene. John Reilly and Don Cheadle are so funny dancing.

Love him!

jon Fri, Aug 11, 2006 at 01:07 AM EST

Jon C. Reilly is great in just about anything. Jessica, Sam Rockwell is great too but you have to admit, he's lacking in the likeability department where Jon Reilly has likeability to spare. The shot of him sitting in the back of the courtroom after Roxie's trial in "Chicago" was heartbreaking.

Jessica Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 10:59 PM EST

I feel like John C Reilly is pretty well known already. Sam Rockwell, on the other hand, needs more attention for his brilliance - how did he not make EW's list?

matt Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 08:57 PM EST

I am extremely happy for John. He's such a great actor, who has such great range, and I'm so happy that he's finally getting the big roles he deserves.

Amelia Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 08:55 PM EST

He is awesome! Me and a friend chased him once. So it was about 35 feet away from him, but we DID chase him! And my mom had a tiny conversation with him. Love him!

DBD Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 07:56 PM EST

Don't forget one of his greatest roles ever--as Sasquatch on the Tenacious D TV show back in the day...

Chuck_A Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 07:04 PM EST

I guess we can only hope that Mr. Reilly will be one of the exceptions.

bootsycolumbia Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 07:02 PM EST

EO, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

EO Thu, Aug 10, 2006 at 06:40 PM EST

Want to know the best way to destroy a good character actor? Start giving them starring roles.
