Whitney and Jenna Fischer are, like, total BFFs

Given that you kids are here reading this blog, I’d say there’s a good 10 to 1 chance you’ve all got MySpace pages. This was a phenomenon I initially resisted -- much like the entire concept of Friendster, I didn’t see the point of turning my friends and acquaintances into commodities to be collected like stamps -- but found myself rapturously embracing one drunken evening after I realized that my MySpace friends don’t have to be limited to the boring weirdos I know in real life but could also include Real Life Celebrities™! Thus have I now befriended Tina Fey, Fall Out Boy, and (duh) Dane Cook, and thus does my life have new weight and meaning. But for all their fabulosity (and the way I’ve used shameless band-befriending to rachet my friends total up over 100), the famous people aren’t really useful in any practical way.
Except. Except for Jenna Fischer, a.k.a. Pam on NBC’s The Office , who is not only my friend, but who sends me special messages of hope and love on a regular basis.
Okay, I’m not all that special: Pam/Jenna has 34,639 friends. And apparently there was initially some question about the validity of her MySpace existence, as her profile pic is currently a shot of her holding up a sign that says “Yes, it’s really me.” But her bulletins and blog posts are Just. So. Sweet, and they make me feel like she really cares. It started with the “Acting Advice Blog” she posted back in July, a 3,000+-word instruction manual for how to get a foothold and survive in the cutthroat business they call the Hollywood that was so good it almost made me regret my decision to quit my Off-Off-Off-Broadway theater career and take this writing gig (note I said “almost”). Here’s a highlight:
“...why was Shem Bitterman (that is his real name) such a dick? I have no idea. Stuff like that will happen to you if you decide to become an actor. People will roll their eyes when you tell them what you do. You have to develop a thick skin -- without becoming jaded, guarded or cynical. That's a tall order. I'll say now what I wish I had said then, 'Shem, sir, with all due respect, you are a f---face and you can kiss my ass.'"
She’s back today with another bulletin, this one much shorter, directing my attention toward a film she wrote, directed, and starred in alongside her husband, James Gunn (who you Gilmore fans will be interested to know is the brother of Sean Gunn, who plays Stars Hollow’s resident kook, Kirk). It’s a celebrity mockumentary called Lollilove, and it’s about a rich couple who decides to help the homeless by giving them lollipops. She recruited famous buddies like Linda Cardellini, Judy Greer, and Jason Segal to participate and released it this spring through the toxically wonderful Troma Entertainment. If you head over to the Lollilove MySpace blog today, you can find a terrific interview with her soon-to-be sister-in-law Michelle Martin, who also starred in the movie. (Michelle is marrying Sean and James’s brother Matt, who, I am told, is the third out of four Gunn boys. I am currently hoping to snag me the fourth at a wedding this fall. But that’s a long story for another time.)
But it wouldn’t be Pam/Jenna if she kept it all crassly self-promotional, so we were also treated to the following fun fact:
“I'm currently shooting episode 3 of the new season of The Office and because I've been sitting behind my desk all day I only dressed the top half of myself. I'm wearing sweat pants and Ugg boots and it's awesome! If only I could have done that when I was a real receptionist.”
God, isn’t she just the coolest? Isn’t she just so down to earth and fun? I want to be her best friend! I want to hang out and drink tea and giggle about what it's like to kiss John Krasinski and braid her hair! I want to text message her pointless things like “OMG WTF LOL!!” I want her opinion on the dress I’m wearing to the Emmys! Damn it, MySpace, you are just not enough anymore!!!
