'Lost': Grab an Apollo bar

Aug 22, 2006, 11:10 AM | by Scott Brown

Categories: 'Lost'

The third season of Lost is so close, you can practically taste it. In fact, you can taste it -- in the form of a complimentary Apollo bar. Below, find the complete press release from “The Apollo Candy Company, a subsidiary of The Hanso Group.” (We’ve redacted the contact phone number until we’re absolutely sure it’s part of the game.) Knowing what you now know, would you willingly bite into any air-dropped, Hatch-stored, Hanso-affiliated foodstuff?

Also, let’s begin a running tally of everyone who’s enjoyed the “out-of-this-world” taste of an Apollo: We can assume Hurley ate one (though I believe we only saw him eat one in a hallucination), and Kate devoured one in a long, very deliberate mini-sequence, shortly after the discovery of the Hatch. Are her horsey hallucinations somehow connected to Apollo consumption? Is the “out-of-this-world” thing a clue to an alien thread? (I sure hope not.) Also: Am I hungry? Yes. Not quite hungry enough to consume edible schwag, but certainly hungry enough to raid the breakroom Swiss Miss box. Back soon…

(See the complete release after the jump...)

COMING TO A GALAXY NEAR YOU: “APOLLO BAR,”
THE CHOCOLATE BAR THAT’S OUT OF THIS WORLD

Free Apollo Bars to Be Distributed for a Limited Time
In Select Locations Across the U.S., U.K., Australia And Asia

What once was lost, now is found… Apollo Bar, the scrumptious chocolate bar developed in the 1960s by M. David Benson, has been enjoyed by generations of consumers. For those who’ve yet to taste Mr. Benson’s bars, your opportunity to “discover what’s inside” awaits. Beginning Wednesday, August 23, free Apollo Bars will be distributed while supplies last in select locations throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Asia. The Apollo Bar is manufactured and distributed by the Apollo Candy Company, a subsidiary of The Hanso Group.

“Chocolate has been my life’s passion, and I am thrilled to be able to share my passion with people all over the world,” said Mr. Benson. “Once people taste my chocolate bar, I think they‘ll be hooked. I’d like to thank Mr. Alvar Hanso and the good folks at The Hanso Foundation for making this possible.”

Mr. Benson, founder of the “Apollo Candy Company,” distributed the first Apollo Bars in San Francisco, CA in 1964. The bars grew in popularity and were circulating across the United States by 1968 before the company fell into dire straits in the early seventies. However, due to the considerable financial intervention of Alvar Hanso, founder of the worldwide philanthropic organization, The Hanso Foundation, the company was saved from bankruptcy and infused with new life. Today, the Apollo Company is alive and well as the private purveyor of chocolates for Alvar Hanso and his many companies.

From August 23 through September, the Apollo Candy Company will distribute free Apollo Bars in cities throughout the U.S., including New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Chicago. For a complete list of dates and locations where people can get their free Apollo bar, and for more information on the Apollo Candy Company, please visit our website at www.apollocandy.com.

You really aren't missing anything with the candy bars... I just had one yesterday in Times Square and they are sub-par. Looking bad on it, it's sad that we Americans will just eat soemthing given to us by a total stranger b/c it is free!

kadie Fri, Aug 25, 2006 at 06:05 PM EST

The "DC" event in Tysons corner was well-organized and well-attended. I was psyched to be close enough to participate.

kmart Fri, Aug 25, 2006 at 02:24 PM EST

ABC came to Redmond, WA last night and they were supposed to give the candy bars after the screening of two terrible new fall shows...but they LOST the candy bars!!! Can you believe it??? Is this some kind of scam? The ABC people said they didn't know where any of the candy bars were. They took down the addresses and phone numbers of all the people there and said that they would mail the candy bar to us!! Unbelievable

There seems to be some confusion about the UK giveaways, as there are 2 different Forbidden Planet store companies in the UK:

www.forbiddenplanet.com (10 stores in UK) and
www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk (17 stores in the UK and 1 in New York)

I really hope the giveaway is happening at both, but if not then I get the feeling a LOT of UK losties are going to be disappointed!

Anyone else going to the Chicago event?

Joel Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 10:34 PM EST

Heh heh, they just rescheduled the Chicago event to Sep 12.... I love Rockit Bar & Grill!

Joel Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 10:25 PM EST

To answer your question EP: When I heard that chicago would have a giveaway I thoughy, "Wow this is so awesome! So glad I moved up here, this wouldn't have happened in Kansas City!" Then a cpuple days later I'm reading some comments on a blog entry for the game and seeing "What's this about the Chicago event? What's going on?" and then seeing it just vanish in a site update. I mean did they just drop the ball when they planned the giveaway at Rockit Bar (in the touristy River North area of town) and then realize -- "Hmm, maybe more than a couple hundred people are going to show up (even if they don't know about Hanso, Apollo, or any of that ARG stuff... this venue is really small for what an insane turnout we'll have -- let's move it to Indy!" -- Yes, I am a bit ticked off.

I mean, sheeesh - they could have had it at the North Avenue beach, there's a big metal ship right on the sand next to Lake Michigan -- they could slap a magnetic name plaque on it, like Helgus Antonius Jr. or Black Rock II (if you don't know folks check out lostpedia.com) -- ahh, if I worked on TLE ARG they'd be over budget ;>

No it does not bother me when they say it's in New York and it's not. We as New Yorkers have been dealing with this for our entire lives. The NEW YORK GIANTS and JETS oonly Play in the Meadowlands, which is in New Jersey.

I say deal with it, quit your bitchin and get on with your lives. If you don't want to go don't. No one is twisting your arm to go. I am going to the one on the 24th in NYC. I have to sit through a concert I don't want to see or hear and to get there I have to drive an hour away and then take an hour train ride, then walk almost 40 blocks to get to the park, then about a mile into the park to get to the stage. All in all it should take me about 4 - 4 1/2 hours to make it there. So if I can do all this you can alljust STFU and make a day out of it, have some fun and let it go. The rest of the world is right, Americans are lazy fools.

I live in Orlando, where Lost's parent company ABC/Disney has a huge venue conducive to distributing large amounts of propaganda. But do they set up an Apollo giveaway here? No - the fans in Florida are neglected, I suppose. Do the bars contain a golden ticket? Oops, wrong story. I want an Apollo bar!

Dazzedelf from TLEC Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 04:24 PM EST

You might want to give that phone number to management at Tyson's Corner in DC because nobody has gotten permission to give bars out there according to them. I called today to get the times that are NOT posted on the website and the malls' events coordinator had no clue and said if they set up without permission they are OUT.

David from TLEC Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 04:12 PM EST

Thanks Jeff! And thanks for the other thing on behalf of Tapdawg! You're truly a stand up guy and you went beyond the call of duty on that one!

T&A Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

Is it made with Hanso developed Splenda?

joopiter Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 02:14 PM EST

Hmmm... maybe if you eat an Apollo bar you're stuck on the island forever. Like Persephone eating pomegranate seeds in Hades (if I'm remembering my mythology correctly.)

I'm thinking that I'm not going to make it to a location to get an Apollo bar, despite my proximity to NYC. Something tells me that's not a valid excuse to miss a day of work. (Although my boss is a Lostie, so she might actually let it fly...)

Donna Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 01:23 PM EST

I feel sorry for the DC guy who has to drive TWENTY MINUTES to get him an Apollo bar. Ohio is just one of many, many, many states in which it would be impossible to drive twenty minutes, or thirty minutes, or even several hours for a taste of the Hanso Corporation. Think of me on your long, long excursion to the wilds of Tysins Corner Virginia. (And isn't there a second event actually in DC anyway?)

Makes me wonder about the testing site, er, giveaway site in Kentucky. What magnetic forcefield, secret scientific workshop, or Hanso crazed robot king drew them to that spot on the globe? Or does somebody just have relatives living nearby?

BP Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 01:18 PM EST

For all the DC/NOVA readers, I spoke with a Tyson's Corner representative. They had no idea any of this was going on. So I am wondering do you look out for an Apollo van or what? Shady indeed.

EP Sato, Tyson's isn't directly accessible by Metro, but you can hop on a bus from theMetro and get to the mall in about 5-10 minutes. Stop your whining or stay home. I suspect you won't stay home.

newbie Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 01:07 PM EST

Pretty funny. I haven't followed the Hanso game at all, I hope that won't in any way make me lost in Season 3. The posties on this website (myself included) & Lord knows how many other sites have long mentioned the possibility of something funky being in the food drops. I like Scott Brown's connection between the food and Kate's horse hallucination, I hadn't made that link (however didn't Sawyer see it too?). I also agree w/him that I hope it is all manmade creepiness vs. alien. Jees, looks like I've fallen off my no Lost postings wagon!

kinglouieXVIII Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 12:46 PM EST

Ugggh! All of these pointless tangents are sucking the life out of the show. I sure wish all these faux websites would stop.

klo Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 12:25 PM EST

i agree EP - as a chicagoan, its ridiculous to think they would say chicago then do this out in the burbs. Its called michigan avenue or the loop Hanso!!!!!!

The DC Area Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 12:12 PM EST

Sorry folks about my fellow DC area resident. We get this all the time. Someone with an inferiority complex about living in DC (they want to be in NYC). DC's a small city, so we should be happy when anything happens in our area (which includes MD and VA). Quit your bitching, drive the (gasp!) 20 min and get your damn candy bar.

Now back to your regularly scheduled comments.

the.whispers Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 11:53 AM EST

Boone ate a chocolate bar in the pilot. I don't know if it was Apollo or not. It might be if it was taken from the plane. He offered it to Shannon but she said no. However in one of those endings that show everyone happy Shannon ate some of Boone's chocolate.

EP Sato Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 11:08 AM EST

Sorry to go OT, but I gotta vent about this. What's up with everyone saying places in Virginia or Maryland are somehow a part of Washington, DC? Per Apollo's site, the DC giveaway will be at The Tysons Corner Center Mall. That's a good 20 minutes outside of DC, and I don't even think it's metro accesible. In other words, the event is NOT in DC and is clearly NOT for DC residents, therefore, the ad should say "now in select cities, like Tysons Corner Virginia" not "now in DC". Totally bunk man.

So I'd like to ask fellow city residents. New yorkers- Does it bug you when someone says that something's in NYC, but it turns out the event's in New Jersey or in Long Island? Chicagoans, does it irk you when an event's supposed to occur in Chicago, but you have to drive to Highland Park to get to it?
