Tribute: Bruno Kirby

Aug 16, 2006, 10:43 AM | by Scott Brown

Categories: Current Affairs

1069__bruno_l Character actor Bruno Kirby has died, and “Babyfishmouth!” is what I remember best about him. The man has dozens of credits, most of them supporting roles, but what sticks with me is that game of Pictionary from When Harry Met Sally. Billy Crystal has the punchline, but Kirby’s setup is what makes it priceless. His two teamings with Crystal -- as the latter’s best pal in both WHMS and City Slickers -- are probably Kirby’s most indelible work. (I'll always thank him for steering clear of City Slickers 2: The Legend of Curley’s Gold.)

This is the usual refrain when a character actor dies, but it’s true: It takes a special sort of performer to back the lead, blah blah, enriching a scene without stealing the focus. Cliché? Perhaps. But it's also true. Kirby will always be remembered as that perfect pal, the faithful retainer -- a fate that may have been sealed early on, when he made his big breakthrough playing young Peter Clemenza in The Godfather Part II. Kirby had subordination down to a science -- yet he was never any kind of pushover or patsy. He even had the stones to play up his second banana-ness with a hilarious recurring arc playing himself on The Larry Sanders Show, culminating in the ultimate second-tier celeb indignity: getting bumped from the sign-off show.

Jeez, he was just on Entourage! (Though mostly in bed, if I recall.) Poor Bruno Kirby. We’ll miss you, sir. Everything you were in, you made it better. How many can say that?

Ahhhh....Bruno!! The BEST! Ever since we heard you talking about Frank in Spinal Tap while driving the limo, we were totally hooked. We watched for you everywhere...we would see movies because you were in them. (That's why we saw City Slickers - for you and Daniel Stern.) Man, you were funny and interesting. The BEST! You will be missed!

THIS IS EARLY OCTOBER, 2006 AND I AM JUST NOW HEARING OF BRUNO KIRBY'S DEATH THIS PAST SUMMER. THIS IS DEPRESSING NEWS, JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I COULDN'T GET MORE DEPRESSED. THIS GUY BRUNO WAS A GIFTED, TALENTED ACTOR, WHOM, I BELIEVE, WAS NEVER USED BY HOLLYWOOD TO HIS FULLEST COMEDIC POTENTIAL. HE REMINDED ME OF THE GREAT CHARACTER ACTOR, ALEX ROCCO. THEY SHOULD'VE BEEN TEAMED UP TOGETHER IN A COMEDY. I RECALL ALEX PLAYED MOE GREEN IN THE GODFATHER AND BRUNO PLAYED YOUNG CLEMENZA IN GODFATHER TWO. BRUNO SHOULD HAVE BEEN STARRING IN HIS OWN COMEDY FILMS. HE WAS ABSOLUTELY HYSTERICAL IN THE FRESHMAN, ESPECIALLY THE SCENE WHERE MATTHEW BRODERICK IS FIRST INTRODUCED TO MARLON BRANDO'S CHARACTER, CARMINE SABATINI, INSIDE THE MOBSTER'S SOCIAL CLUB IN LITTLE ITALY. SITTING AT A TABLE WITH BRANDO AND BRODERICK, YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE BRUNO CRACKING UP AND TRYING TO BITE HIS LIP TO KEEP FROM LAUGHING OUT LOUD AS BRANDO RECREATED HIS DON CORLEONE VOICE AND PERSONA AS HE SPOKE TO A NERVOUS BRODERICK, WHO REALIZES IN THE FILM THAT THIS CARMINE GUY LOOKS JUST LIKE DON CORLEONE IN THE GODFATHER. BRUNO'S PERFORMANCE WAS THE FUNNIEST THING IN THE FRESHMAN, EVEN THOUGH BRANDO HIMSELF WAS FUNNY IN IT TOO, BUT IN A MENACING WAY. GOODBYE BRUNO, WE'LL MISS YOU. WHILE THERE ARE ALOT LESS LAUGHS HERE ON EARTH BECAUSE OF YOUR PASSING, I CAN LOOK UP AND SEE THE STARS IN THE NIGHT SKY SHINING BRIGHTER BECAUSE YOU ARE THERE.

I was very fortunate to share a dressing room for four months with Bruno while we were filming WE'RE NO ANGELS in Vancouver. I was the town sheriff and he was my deputy. And in those four months we laughed, we cried, we sang, and we traded every dirty story we could think of. It was my first big gig and I was scared shitless. He helped me get through that first day on the set when I thought for sure I would be fired. I would not be the actor I am today if not for his humour and generosity. He was one of the greatest of our generation both on and off the screen. And whenever I bunk with some young tyke on the set and they ask me to tell them stories of the greats I have worked he is always at the head of the list. Love you forever buddy.

I was thrilled to see Bruno Kirby in "Entourage" and, as others have said, he made a good show/movie/script great. We just watched the most recent "Entourage" episode and it wasn't until we saw the dedication that we realized Bruno is gone. I am sad. From the first time I made my husband watch "When Harry Met Sally" to the last, I would turn to him and say 'I love Bruno Kirby", to which he replied 'I know dear, I know'. He made acting seem effortless, fun, true, as though it wasn't acting. And was utterly delightful. Godspeed Bruno, you are loved.

i was on vacation out of the country when bruno passed, and i just found out tonight when watching the credits for entourage. i was much saddened and upset, because his performances affected me very much. wasn't he famous for uttering the very brooklyn line "fagedaboutit"? many years ago i went to see an off broadway play called "bunny, bunny" which was a fantastic play about gilda radner. a little while before the show started, we went into a bakery in the village, and bruno kirby walked in. he was gracious and friendly and i felt a charismatic bond with him. he will be very much missed!

Jim OConnor Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

Bruno was the best usher at Radio City Music Hall. As high school kids we would talk about the future. His dream, to become a model or actor. Good Bless

When I heard of Kirby's death . . . for an unknown reason, my heart dropped like a lead weight into a deep, dark ocean of sorrow. He wasn't the most famous of actors, but he was one of my favorites to watch in a movie. I always wanted to be like him - wiseguy'ish tough guy - proud and strong. His dialougue in 'City' - about his worst/best day seemed to emmulate the man's true character. I was Kirby and He was ME! I died a lot the morning I heard of his death. I sat in the still of that evening and watched 'City' and laughed all over again. I still don't know why he impacts my life - even now. All I know, is that this world is somehow emptier without him in it! I hope to meet him in heaven when it's my time to leave this world/Life. When I do, I'm want to tell him Thanks for being such a cool actor, an individual and how he change MY World!!

pamann Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 01:38 PM EST

I feel in love with him when he ran the banana eating contest in 'Room 222'. He had a wonderful voice, like a wise grandfather even as a young man.

Charlie Wear Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 03:53 AM EST

He was great in City Slickers! Casual Buzz

jose Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 07:20 PM EST

great part in godfather 2 stealing the carpet and in the freshman will be missed greatly

Phil Oropesa Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 11:55 AM EST

Mr. Kirby was sheduled to appear on Letterman, shortly after "Good Morning Vietnam" opened. I was trying to make ends meet and moonlighting as a limo driver in New York City. I was assigned to pick up Mr. Kirby at JFK and drive him downtown. His plane was delayed by over two hours due to a fierce snowstorm, even by NYC standards. Needless to say that he was relieved to find me waiting for him as he stepped of the plane. All the way to the car he kept thanking me for waiting. When I opened the car door for him he asked if it would be OK for him to sit up front with me. I told him it was going to be a long slow drive in the snowstorm and that I would welcome the company. As we were driving away from the Airport, he asked if there was any liquor in the back. I told him there was a bottle of scotch, a bottle of vodka and mixers in the mini-fridge. He climbed through the divider window and came back with the bottle of scotch and two glasses (I know, a very un-PC thing nowadays but a very cool guy thing to do). As we slowly drove through the blizzard into Manhattan, we drank scotch and talked about sports but mostly we talked about me. We talked about what I did for a living, my pregnant wife (our first), living in New York in general and life in the cosmic sense. To this day, looking back at the experience I can only recall him talking about himself just once when he said he was a little nervous about being on the Letterman show because Letterman was so unpredictable. When we arrived at his destination (his mothers apartment)he shook my hand, wished be all the best and gave me a $100 bill "for the baby...".

I drove many "stars" in those two years, but Mr. Kirby is the only one that I look back on with genuine affection. Beyond that one brief meeting I didn't really "know" Mr Kirby. However, from that one experience, I feel "genuine" is the word that describes him best. He will be missed.

By the way Mr. Kirby if you are out there listening, my firstborn is enrolled in NYU studying theater and acting. Maybe a little of you rubbed off on that C note!

Jack Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 08:17 PM EST

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Bruno's death.
I loved everything he did.
In these days of over-inflated egos, media hogs, and talentless 'celebrities', Bruno was a real gem.
What a class act.
I feel a weekend retrospective coming on.

David R Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 04:58 PM EST

Someone else mentioned the scene where Bruno as Clemenza is eating with Tessio and the young Vito. Bruno reaches across the table and hacks off a chunck of bread and soaks the last bit of sauce...when ever we have a Sunday dinner of spagetti, and I finish with a slice of bread, I have always though of Bruno and I am instantly at that table, so natural. We will miss you next Sunday.

PBR Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 03:21 AM EST

The Shrek Doll. THAT was the episode. A great one! I couldn't remember. How odd that B Kirby was just ON the entourage.. and now one of the boys of the Hollywood entourage is gone.

Go with the angels.

Jenny Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 12:35 PM EST

My favorite Bruno Kirby scenes have to be in The Freshman, when he explains the "Kiss of All Kisses" to Matthew Broderick and when he gives Matthew his new Italian identity. A great character actor; he'll be greatly missed.

kenny k Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 09:33 AM EST

Bruno: Still dead after 29 hours

Gina Pesca Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 05:54 AM EST

I was saddened and shocked to hear of Bruno's passing. An amazing actor whose talent will be appreciated from this fan for years to come.
Rest in Peace.

Bill Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 02:35 AM EST

Too young to go....as a person who has been dealing with a best friend who has had cancer for many many years...life is tough....but now you can really enjoy yourself....You will be missed, but it is you that is having a wonderful time and we that still must live in the now, so long Bruno, see you on the flipside!

Mike Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 02:13 AM EST

I'll never forget the look on Bruno's face when Michael Madsen slapped him in Donnie Brasco. That was what made him a genious. He was great with his lines, but he was great with just his choice of expression.May he rest and/or party in peace.

Eric Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 01:47 AM EST

The absolute best at what he did. An incredibly talented actor who will be missed.

So very sad to see him pass.

Isabel Pope Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 12:17 AM EST

What was the line in GMV when he said something about the silent majority that wanted to hear polka music ?
We also do the and if you dooo...line at work. LOL
And my other fav line was when he was trying to justify his womanizing in CS, something about all the different types of cereal he was used to, and how could he get used to just the same cereal day in and day out. He really was underrated.

Laura Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 11:07 PM EST

Wow, I can't believe he's gone. Hit me so hard and made me realize he is one of my favorite actors of all time. He will be soooo missed.

snarky Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 10:55 PM EST

Wow! Someone else also remembers his guest stint on "Homicide"? He was great in that role. I'll always remember him as the perpetually "bumped" guest on Shandling's "Larry Sanders Show". Very funny!

tot Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 10:44 PM EST

He was excellent in everything I ever had the good fortune to see him in. And I can't count how many times I've read or heard "baby fish mouth" today. Hearing he died made me gasp, and I still can't believe it. Peace & love to you, Bruno!

John Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 10:26 PM EST

I firs saw him in "Good Morning Vietnam" and I thought, "Geez, they got a real army guy for this part!" That and "The Freshman" are just standouts. He was thoroughly convincing in any role.

Dan Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 09:59 PM EST

I received the same chill when I heard of Bruno's passing that I got upon hearing the news of John Candy's and Marlon Brando's death. It takes a true great one to chill me when I hear the passing of a human being I only came to know through the characters we fell in love with or loathed. Bruno could do either of them so well. From his side-kick-ish role opposite Billy Crystal (twice, City Slickers, When Harry Met Sally) to the shunned intelligent cabbie in This is Spinal Tap or his small but menacing and evocative role as Lorenzo Carcatera's father in Sleeper's (it is Bruno's telling of the story of King Benny rather than the flashback scenes that gave me chills...BANG, BANG! BANG, BANG!) So long. Though your career wasn't the stuff Hollywood hounded you for (good for you, sir), it was enough to leave a hurting on my heart knowing that I won't see anymore movies with your name in the cast.

LJM Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 09:53 PM EST

"And if you doooo, and if you dooo!" What a great performance in GMV... made me laugh till I nearly wet myself. All his work was so convincing, made me forget I was watching a movie character and not a real person

Brad L Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 09:50 PM EST

I was a theatre manager at the Hyland Cinemas in Toronto I remember Bruno came by one night when filming the Freshman here. He took in a film and stopped out afterwards to sign my "When Harry Met Sally" poster. He was a gentleman and I really appreciated the gesture and conversation. From Spinal Tap to Tin Men and especially Good Morning Vietnam I will always enjoy his performances and how he could bring a smile to my face. Our planet is a little less funny tonight without you Bruno.

Gary Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 09:32 PM EST

Bruno Kirby ...I love you !. What a fantastic actor and gentleman.

Kevin Acker Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 09:12 PM EST

Bruno, say hello to your dad Bruce for me. I'd say rest in peace, but I know you guys are getting geared up for a great poker game, or rooting for one of your teams to win. a job well done, all the way around.

Joe C Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:57 PM EST

He and Academy Award Winner Bobby Moresco (Crash) both came from our small Catholic School in Hell's Kitchen. Both great kids, and talented men. Proud to have known them both.

Mark Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:54 PM EST

I remember the great chemistry between Bruno, Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern in City Slickers. I saw the movie on the big screen in a packed theater and have rarely witnessed such nonstop uproarious laughter from the audience. Godspeed, Bruno.

David Schwarz Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:48 PM EST

Mr. Kirby played opposite both De Niro and Brando, as well as Williams and Crystal - very few have reached such lofty heights in their careers - and so magnificently as well. You will be sorely missed, sir.

Ken Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:39 PM EST

One great performance (actually several) to Bruno Kirby's credit was his turn as a vengeful ex-con in the TV series Homicide. He brought his usual edgy borderline humor approach to the role as he stalked one of the detectives night and day.

kelley Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:35 PM EST

"i know funny" Now we all know sadness. Great timing, great facial reactions, great fun. Yes ...he did know funny !!

robert Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:31 PM EST

Great in a Columbo episode and of course, the Godfather II.

CYNTHIA Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:27 PM EST

Remeber in "When Harry Met Sally" and Bruno's character was in bed with Carrie Fischer and she said, "Promise me I'll never have to go out there again." And Kirby's character held her gently and promised her she wouldn't as they snuggled & kissed in their $6,000.00-upper-east-side-Manhattan-1980's-type-monster-king-sized-bed...And at that moment, I wanted to be Carrie Fisher
nestled safely in the big strong arms of Bruno Kirby..with his soft sexy voice whispering in my ear..They were the lucky couple..From what I hear Harry & Sally divorced three years later..but the second banana couple are still serving drinks on that wagon wheel coffee table.
Bye Bruno.

Robert Waldmann Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:15 PM EST

I'm just some dumb smuck in an obsolete corner of the world, but I want Bruno's loved ones to know that Bruno had an impact on me. His ordinary air about himself was refreshing and something I appreciated. He was simply the type I grew up with, just regular, and I loved that person was allowed to be portrayed in Hollywood.

ZELDA HOGGLESQUASH Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:15 PM EST

BARRY GORDON SUX.

Jack Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:05 PM EST

Bruno... you were great-- and no -- you WEREN'T BARRY GORDON!!!!

sabrina Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 08:02 PM EST

Dear Mr. Kirby,

I just have one word "BABY-FISH-MOUTH".
I found you unconventionally attractive and swooned over your gentle unique voice. We will all miss you..EVERYONE I know is taliking about you and how much they LIKED you...
We always play this game about famous people and you would be on the list of Who we would like to have over for dinner.
Bless you Mr. Kirby, you made so many of our films so very special....

Carol Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 07:58 PM EST

Bruno Kirby put his heart into every role. He had a gift and a great talent. He was real and it felt like he was a friend to all. He will be sadly missed by so very many. My condolences to his family.

Jakeem Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 07:54 PM EST

What I remember most is that he bowed out of the "City Slickers" sequel because of creative differences with Billy Crystal. And he wasn't very complimentary of Crystal's ego at the time, either. I just hope they patched things up before he died.

Ben Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 07:43 PM EST

"They gotta lotta parking meters in florida" Loved him in Donny Brasco. He will always be remembered and missed.

Squire Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 07:33 PM EST

When I checked the News online, as I do every morning....I was both surprised and sad to hear of Bruno's passing! Sad by the loss of such a Great Actor at such a young age...and Surprised to see him described as a "character actor"...as an opening to the article! How about Great Actor you Hollywood Idiots! Bruno made me laugh so many times, it's hard to single out a favorite performance....but the driver in Spinal Tap is absolutely classic "Bruno"...just brilliant! RIP Bruno and All The Best to Your Family! You will be deeply missed by this fan...and there are very few actors out there of your caliber...thanks for all of your brilliant work!

Pam Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 07:07 PM EST

"Yes I can, if Frank Sinatra says it's OK"
"....when you've loved and lost like Frank has, you know what life's about."

Garen van de Beek Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 07:02 PM EST

Bruno worked out at the same little gym I did...in fact, I just saw him a couple weeks ago. No one had any idea he was ill...he was his regular guy self...wearing his black T and black shorts as always...riding the stationary bike with his nose in a magazine. Of course, he was a great actor...but he was just a regular, nice guy too. He will be missed.

mike Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 06:57 PM EST

Great Unique Voice, Many Great Performances, he voraciously eats the food and the scenes he's appears in Godfather 2, was always a great interview, I don't remember if it was on Letterman or Leno, but he talked about as a young man how every guy or friend had a "stash" of porn, very funny, very true, Bruno you will be missed

Ronnie Peterson Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 06:48 PM EST

Bruno, Right now I can barely type just finding out of your passing, You have brought tears to my eyes from laughter too many times. Rest in peace you will be missed.

Respectfully,

Ronnie

jason Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 06:35 PM EST

Damn that Bruno Kirby! Every time I see him eat pasta in the Godfather,2 I am forced make and eat some.... with Italian bread, thus destroying my low carb diet. Damn you!

cathi Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:54 PM EST

Bruno Kirby was my cousin as well. He was much older than me so I do not remember him as a child. Instead I remember him being bigger than life. Watching him in movies, on broadway and listening to him in Stuart Little. I will cherish being able to share his talents with my children through all his incredible works. Ironically I am participating in a 1/2Ironman this weekend to raise funds and awareness for The Leukemia Society. The race will mean more to me now and I will think of him often while I'm on that long road especially when I cross the finishline. I dedicate my race to you Bruno. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends and fans. I beleive if you can make a difference to one person in your lifetime than you have found success. From these postings we can see that you were so very successful.

Wendy Lueker Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:51 PM EST

The first time I noticed Bruno Kirby, James Caan was enduring his hysterical chattering while serving late night MP duty with him in "Cinderella Liberty" - But does anyone remember Bruno's many guest appearances on Letterman? Dave would have him on because he was such a great story-teller, I'm sure. Like the time Bruno and Matthew Broderick went to dinner with Marlon Brando. Matthew got a spot on a clean, white shirt and frantically tried several methods to remove it at the table. Marlon leaned in to Bruno and said - "Kid's doing quite a number on the shirt.." (Imagine a dead-on impersonation of Brando on that line from Mr.Kirby) The great character actors are missed the most, I think - RIP Bruno

Claudia Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:24 PM EST

Bruno Kirby is my cousin. He was a wonderful person. Both he, his father Bruce, and brother John loved to act and lived to act. I am happy that he got to do what he loved to do so often in his life. He was very good at it too. The last time our family saw Bruno was in his performance on Broadway as Uncle Louie in Lost in Yonkers. He was magnificant! Our family had a whole row in the theatre. We always hoped to see him again in California. We never thought we would lose him so soon.
I have special memories of him when he used to live in New York and he would come to our house and as childredn we would play and talk for hours. You will be missed Bruno. Our hearts go out to the rest of the family and his friends.

Kelly H. Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:22 PM EST

I was so saddened to hear of this! I am a huge fan of Bruno Kirby! He will be terribly missed. When Harry Met Sally is my absolute favorite movie and it just wouldn't have been the classic it is without him. Bless him and his family.

Bo Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:17 PM EST

The scene in the Godfather when he and DiNiro are stealing the carpet...when Bruno is waiting for the cop to open the door. Time stopped and it appeared to be a painting. What a voice.

Victoria F Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:17 PM EST

Shocked and sad... I had a crush on the guy. He always made me feel good...like he'd be just a reqular guy to hang out with at a Bar B Que. Kisses...say hi to God for me.

Hoz Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:07 PM EST

"Carmine said one boy, here there are two!"

Bruno Kirby was an extremely talented character actor. I can remember so many of his roles, even very brief ones like the limo driver in "Spinal Tap" & the young Peter Clemenza in "Godfather II." Honestly, tho, one of the movies that I REALLY THOROUGHLY enjoyed Kirby's turn in - and, quite surprisingly, NO ONE on this site has thus far even mentioned it! - is "The Freshman." His portrayal of 'Victor Ray', nephew of the late, great Marlon Brando's Godfather-like character 'Carmine Sabatini' in this fantasticaly entertaining film, "The Freshman", is an absolute CLASSIC character actor role, the very definition, in fact! Con man Bruno Kirby stakes out Grand Central Station for a sucker and "in a moment of weakness, victimizes" Clark Kellogg (Matthew Broderick), a freshman just arriving at NYU's film school. One of the best bits in the flick?: Bert Parks singing Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" to a Komodo Dragon!
Maximilian Schell, Frank Whaley & a kooky Penelope Ann Miller role shore up an already-outstanding cast. See it!!
Clark Kellogg: "You lost my money on a horse?"
Victor Ray: "In retrospect I'm not even sure it was a horse."

Bruno ... your great characters will surely be missed. My condolences to his family in this sad time.

Eric Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 05:05 PM EST

This message is for Bruno Kirby's family. My wife and I were so saddened to hear of Bruno's passing. We are huge fans. He made it easy to be a huge fan. He was instantly lovable and beleivable in every role. He had an everyman sensibilty. We will miss him.

Dave Elliot Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:53 PM EST

Wotta bummer to a great actor. I lost my father to leukemia and offer my wishes to Bruno's family.
I saw "The Harrad Experiment" (on a double bill with "Don't Look in the Basement") when I was a kid. It was quite risque with all of the nudity and such. I love him in GF2 as young Clemenza, urging Vito to steal the rug and flipping off the car that just misses them as they hang the new sign on their storefront. His all-time best performance, in my opinion, was axed from the Spinal Tap film where he smokes a joint with the band in their hotel room, strips to his underwear, and sings Sinatra, then passes out. It is available as an extra feature on the dvd. Rest in Peace, Bruno. There's a lot of us down here who are extremely sad that you're gone, especially as young as you were. DE

Justin Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:42 PM EST

Bruno Kirby brought so much to the big screen. He was more than just second fiddle. He was truly an icon in the industry and a real class act. It's just starttling to hear of his death. So sad.

Vernon Kirby Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:35 PM EST

I never heard of him.

Donna Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:31 PM EST

Like everyone else, I was shocked and saddened to learn of Bruno's death and I pass on my condolences to his family. I read through the remembrances on this page and saw Sharon's comment about appearing with Bruno in "The Harrad Experiment." That's my first memory of a Bruno Kirby performance and I was so glad to see someone mention it. His performances were all rich and memorable and strong! We'll miss you Bruno!

Jim McKeny Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:31 PM EST

Just in case Bruno's brother John should read this: John your old pals from LACC are thinking of you and your family at this time. Many of them are trying to reach out to you via email. Even though it's been a long time, i remember your dad and brother coming to see you in "Guys & Dolls" at the Camino. -mckeny

Nichole Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:18 PM EST

I remember him in all those movies you mentioned and besides "When Harry Met Sally", "Sleepers" sticks out in my head, because it was then when he played a hot-tempered physical abuser that I thought, man he has more range that I thought.

Elly Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:17 PM EST

i loved Bruno Kirby. he was so sweet and kind and always cared about everything. i got to meet him. may he rest in peace.

Rick Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:15 PM EST

I remember he was something special when he was in an episode of Columbo. Not the newer ones, but the original. Circa 1972 or 73. A Colonel killed some bratty executive, who was going to sell the academy he was running, with a mis-fired cannon. You could tell Peter Falk treated Bruno with something special. "Trip the lights fantastic, Bruno"!

aztvwatcher Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 04:10 PM EST

Even though I've seen it many times, I always crack up at his lines in Good Morning Vietnam...the filling in as DJ...talking about his love of Polka...and conspiring with another late great character actor J T Walsh to get rid of Robin Williams character...he stole every scene he was in...absolutely hysterical and seemingly effortless...another great one gone before their time

One of the finest moments I've ever seen in a movie occured when, as the young Peter Clemenza in Godfather Part 11, he realized that Vito Corleone had replaced him as the leader of their fledgling crime syndicate. Sitting at the dinner table in a bib and a with a fork dangling in his hand ready to attack a pasta dish, the perfectly calibrated incredulous look on his face signalled one of the most important developments of the film - and as only the finest of actors can pull off, it was done without a single word spoken. I regret that I didn't think of showing my appreciation for that brilliant, subtle moment while he was still with us. RIP Bruno Kirby, and thanks for showing us time and again that a side dish can often be the best part of a great meal.

I remember the first time I noticed Bruno. It was city slickers and he was on the plane and he went to the bathroom and told his girlfriend:"Miss Me" and we all will very much.RIP Bruno Kirby and thank you for all of your great work!

I was shocked and saddened when I saw the news. The thought of him makes me smile--I remember the Godfather role the best. What a great loss.

"you're a sporting goods salesman!"

"Not today!"

Will be sadly missed, I really enjoyed watching Bruno work.

Bob Davidson Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:53 PM EST

He was wonderful.

In my heart, I know I'm funny.

RIP, Bruno.

rosie Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:51 PM EST

I get such a kick out of seeing him in that old, old Columbo episode about a boys' military school. His father acted in many a Columbo, so it is a treat to see Bruno, too.

I am very sorry to hear this news because I have remained a fan from a the 70's when Bruce Kirby, Jr. and I played young lovers in The Harrad Experiment. Ah, the scandal of a co-ed dorm! He was a funny man and I always had a secret smile in my memories. I am sure Don Johnson and Tippy Hedren feel the same. It may never make a trivia question, but it should.

Echoing others: "Elevating movies, even good ones" was what Bruno Kirby was all about. Another well-worn cliche applies: you never caught him acting. Bruno was sincere, captivating and effortless.
Check out his star turn in "Almost Summer". Pure smarm played for charm somehow made that clumsy film endearing.
Thankfully for us that appreciated him, he was that rare film industry commodity: a superb character actor allowed many chances to ply his art.
And for good reason.

My husband and I were (still are) really big fans of Bruno Kirby. He was definitely a very talented actor, and he had impeccable timing and a great voice. I second what someone said above: I didn't know him personally, but still I feel as though I've lost someone I knew. It's nice to see this outpouring from his fans. I hope he knew how much he was loved.

Len Urban Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:32 PM EST

He was absolutely great in Modern Romance.."You want 100 Ludes"?

g Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:31 PM EST

Wanna see Bruno in a really funny role? Check out Tin Men with Danny Devito and Richard Dreyfuss

Matt Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:23 PM EST

My favorite line of his was City Slickers:
"I can get an erection whenever I want. WATCH!"

Gerad Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:21 PM EST

Mr. Kirby provided some of my favorite moments in my favorite films. Great work, great career that sadly ended far to early.
"Let me get ya hot Phil. Price, I need a price"

Thanks for all the moments & smiles. You will be missed.

I used to work somewhere he came in often, he was a really nice guy!… One day I told him how I saw “Spinal Tap” for the first time and was excited to see him in it. Well, he asked me if I had seen the “extras” on the DVD… and I hadn’t… so he told me that there was more to watch… and so that night I popped the DVD back in and sure enough MORE scenes with Bruno… and there is this one part that I DON’T know WHY they took out… the guys in the band are messing with the driver, Bruno, and it is AWESOME… you should check it out… Bruno recommended it!

Whenever I am about to pack my bags to go to the running of the bulls in Pamplona annually, I always put the DVd of 'City Slickers' on: watching Bruno taking a 'header' over the fences as the bulls come down the street makes me weep. Now a part of me will weep tonight for other reasons. What a gift he had - what gifts he gave us. RIP my friend. It's a sad night down here - but the angels will be laughing with you up there.

JG Hickey Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:20 PM EST

Like so many of his roles. His brief appearance as the limo driver in Spinal Tap made a great movie greater. Bruno perfected that art, making something special even more special.

Ken Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:17 PM EST

Whenever I saw Bruno Kirby on the screen, I remember him in A Thousand Clowns. The clueless, egostitical kid show host is trying to make up with Kirby's uncle and gives Kirby a cardboard cutout of himself. Kirby's response, a masterpiece of diplomatic ambiguity "You can just imagine how I feel." Delivered flawlessly.

Natasha Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:16 PM EST

He was just so instantly loveable and he elevated any project he was in. I never met him, but feel like I just lost a friend. You will be missed, Bruno!

gia xara Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:09 PM EST

Don't forget "Cinderella Liberty"! RIP, Bruno! :(

donovan Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:06 PM EST

i was fortunate enough to have met Bruno through some friends many years & summers ago. He took the time to teach my son how to throw a baseball, tell a joke & wink at a girl. Thank You for your true kindness.

Hunter S. Thompson Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:04 PM EST

Don't forget "Marty Lewis" in "Where the Buffalo Roam (1980)". I believe he was playing Jann S. Wenner of the
just started magazine - Rolling Stone. He still moves like a cat.

Kara Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:03 PM EST

I was really sad to hear about his death. He was one of my favorite character actors. I'll watch "Tin Men" this weekend just to hear Bruno sing "La Bamba." He will be missed.

Michael Chimenti Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 03:01 PM EST

He really is one of the last of a golden era - one of the last great character actors. They just don't make 'em like that any more. And like all great character actors, while his body of small parts is enormous, he also leaves behind a legacy that includes a couple of real classics. I met him after seeing LOST IN YONKERS on Broadway - a real class guy.

Seth Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:57 PM EST

I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friendly with Bruno during the filming of Good Morning Vietnam in Bangkok. He was a bright talented guy, a gentleman who took his craft but not himself too seriously. His appearances in The Larry Sanders roast and final episodes belied a generosity of spirit that was really charming.

He will be missed

Dale Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:51 PM EST

Check out Bruno in Albert Brooks' "Modern Romance" in 1984.

Fred Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:50 PM EST

Oh, Bruno,
I first saw him in many many roles as a child actor
and got to meet him while working at "The Beverly Wishire Hotel" in 1986 he had lost his wallet and I found it.
He came and picked it up and we talked for two hours
about cars and acting a real sweet guy.
Then he got his break thru parts and I was very proud
of him. We talked a few times but lost touch.
man what a guy.

Kate Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:47 PM EST

To me, his most memorable second-banana line was from WHMS: "You made a woman meow?!" Bravo Bruno & rest in peace.

Gigavasquez Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:44 PM EST

I recalled seeing him on Broadway in a Neil Simon play which was later made into a movie without him (Richard Dreyfuss) played the part. Too bad -- Bruno was spectular as the uncle.
Great actor. Love him. Will be missed, Like any great character actor, they don't die, they make timely exits. RIP Bruno!

Jim Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:37 PM EST

Bruno was magnificent in "Good Morning, Vietnam". An equal to Robin Williams in many aspects. RIP, Bruno.

Sue Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:32 PM EST

What a shock. I just watched "When Harry Met Sally" the other day on DVD. When I saw he died I thought, "He's too young!" He'll be greatly missed. I loved watching him in his various roles.

Linda Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 02:21 PM EST

You are so right!!
It does take a special performer to
back the lead--he was perfect!!
If I could pick a perfect friend it
would be him.
I will miss him and treasure what he gave us to remember

We at WMMR-FM in Philadelphia were lucky enough to have Bruno stop by for an interview about ten years ago, when he was in town doing a play. And as deservedly praised as he was for his acting, just THAT VOICE, and his command of the language, made for riveting radio. He told a story about being a theatre usher on Hollywood Blvd, when Elvis came with a group (Entourage?) During the film, he called his mom down so she could meet him. Priceless! Bruno Kirby was proud of his dad, devoted to his craft, and most of all a gentleman. I count myself very fortunate to have met him. Today, we replayed that interview on the air in Philly, and it was as real and charming today, as it was when he graced us with it.

Gone too soon. Rest in Peace, Bruno.
