Are these the 50 best comedies of all time?

151111__rushmore_l What happens when the Internet is full of lists? List-eria -- like, "hysteria," right? Except with lists -- cuz we're all, like, crazy for lists, right? Crazy, and maybe a just tad nauseated. (The best part of this coinage is, it comes with absolutely no negative associations.)

So what's the latest, shall we say, outbreak of listeria? It's in the pages of Premiere magazine, which has ranked the 50 greatest comedies in that least controversial of orders: chronological. Not that there won't be controversy: Any list that privileges Zoolander over Tootsie is going to kick up more than its fair share of dust. But what can be done? It's a little of the 50 greatest movie comedies of... ever (including Rushmore, pictured). In any language. (By my count, only one foreign entry made the cut.) You'd never see a list of "the 50 greatest dramas" -- it'd be deemed far too nebulous a category. Yet comedy, as always, gives the illusion of classifiability.

But this is what "list-eria" is all about: rowdy debate. And, according to the CDC, vomiting. Indulge in both below.

Which Way Is Up

blackpower Wed, Aug 2, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

There is only one film worthy enough to hold the title as the FUNNIEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME and it is Richard Pryor's "Which Way Is Up"!

poochie Wed, Aug 2, 2006 at 02:32 PM EST

1.) The original "Friday"
2.) "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka"
3.) "The Toy"-Richard Pryor

jon Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 11:40 PM EST

[In "Strangers With Candy" Jerry Blank voice] "Interiors" was hilarious!

Herbie Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 11:08 PM EST

I'd put every Woody Allen movie, including Interiors, above Zoolander.

Jill Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 06:37 PM EST

The two most serious omissions I can see are Monty Python/Holy Grail and Bull Durham. Also, the list of classics left off Arsenic and Old Lace.

Becca Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 04:40 PM EST

Overall, a good list. It includes the all time classics like "Some Like it Hot" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" which no one can really argue with. As for exclusions, my first thought after reading the was, like others, "Where are the women?" I will readily admit that comedy has been dominated by men, but there are some great female comedies as well. "Clueless" is a brillant mix of two very clever female minds, Jane Austen and Amy Heckerling. Would it really have hurt to leave off "Wedding Crashers" or "Zoolander" and add it instead?

***** Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 04:22 PM EST

I agree that list was lacking once it got to the current years. I was wondering if I was the only one missing The Princess Bride from that list. Defintily some serious exclusions there.

jon Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 03:56 PM EST

Um, no.

Not to bring out the Rachel Tension but where was "Hollywood Shuffle" or "The Nutty Professor" remake (the dining room scene was funnier than all of "Wedding Crashers" put together and I liked "Wedding Crashers").

And, will someone please believe me, "Addams Family Values" is one of the funniest movies EVER made! "I was a ballerina, delicate, graceful!" "I'll be the victim / All your life." "But Debbie, pastels?" "Are you enjoying this?" all from the same movie, all hilarious moments (if you haven't seen it then think of this as jibberish until you do).

melissa Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 03:19 PM EST

"The Princess Bride" and "Shaun of the Dead" may not technically be considered "comedies" in the vein of something like a Chevy Chase or a Mel Brooks film, but they're two of my favorite funny movies. "Shaun" in particular is so well done.

Mr. Show Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 02:57 PM EST

It's good to see a list that doesn't reek of snobbery, including raunch-fare like There's Something About Mary. Wedding Crashers was funny, but not good enough to be on the list. 40 Year-Old Virgin was the best comedy in years, and kudos to Premiere for recognizing a future classic so early.

I don't understand all the Zoolander hate though. It takes some time for it to grow on you (at first watch I hated it) but the more times you see it the funnier it becomes. It takes a few viewings for you to really start reveling in the absurdity.

Rob Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 02:53 PM EST

Wedding Crashers on a best comedies of all time list? That movie was terrible!

I would've replaced some of those movies with "Clue," "Clueless," "Ghostbusters," "Little Shop of Horrors," "The Princess Bride," "Uncle Buck," "Ruthless People, "The Truman Show," "Heathers," swapped Woody Allen's "Sleeper" for his "Bananas" or "Love and Death," and swapped Wes Anderson's "Rushmore" for his "The Royal Tenenbaums."

luanzoe Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

Re: Laurel & Hardy- I'd take Way out West over a Chump at Oxford anyday.

Also, Preston Sterges movie- I'd pick either Sullivan's Travels or The Palm Beach Story over Miracle at Morgan's Creek.

And where are Holiday, Ball of Fire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or Libelled Lady?

(btw, I'm 34, I've just always loved movies from the 40's & 50's!)

Tim Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 02:26 PM EST

I have to agree with the movies from the 20s and up to Blazing Saddles. After that mid-70s, the list is hit or miss. Some of the movies from the mid-90s and beyond, I can't agree on. More popular than gut-busting funny.

And yes, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World belongs on the list.

Dave Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 02:14 PM EST

Thank you! My first reaction was, why the heck is Brandon Routh in an article about the best comedies of all time? I think most of the list is pretty solid, and was especially glad to see Dr. Strangelove, the Mel Brooks' movies, Caddyshack, and 40-Year-Old Virgin made it.

Brett Colbo Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 02:02 PM EST

God, I thought that was Brandon Routh, not Jason Schwartzman. HAHA. But, since I never saw Superman Returns, I guess it could be a comedy.

Best Comedies:
1. Waiting For Guffman
2. Best In Show
3. This Is Spinal Tap
4. A Mighty Wind

kinglouieXVIII Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:47 PM EST

Premier's list was pretty solid. I love that they included SOME LIKE IT HOT (one of the best movies of all time) and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN (one of the funniest movies of the past decade).

However, if you're going to include an Austin Powers movie, everyone knows the funniest is THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME. The last sequence in which everyone is describing Dr. Evil's rocket is priceless! And why no love for HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE or NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (aaaaaaaah, stop throwing tomatoes at me!)?

JL Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:45 PM EST

Best in Show is definitely superior to Guffman. I consider myself both a theater person and a dog person and I found that Best in Show was much funnier. Besides, the article did say that it was chosen because it is the most universally appealing Guest film.

"We could talk or not talk for hours and still find things to not talk about."

lola Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:41 PM EST

How about the " The Russians are coming, The Russians are coming!" Brilliant comedy by Noramn Jewison and "1941" also!

exiene Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:35 PM EST

Ok, comedy is subjective and I agree with maybe 45 films on the list but ZOOLANDER was not funny. I was hoping that Royal Tanenbaums would be on the list as I liked that movie better than Rushmore(Then again, Jason Schwartz is not one of my favorite actors, in fact I see him and I have an urge to smack him...I need help.)While I'm here, Waiting for Guffman is a funny move..but the horrors of my own experiences w/ community theater made the film a painful documentary rather than a comedy to me and Guffman didn't have Jennifer Coolidge who was a scream in Best in Show.

cRAIG Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

i'll start with the comedies that have no place on this list: Private Benjamin, Austin Powers, Zoolander, Wedding Crashers. that was easy. if i want to be a little more picky, i'd say they picked the wrong Christopher Guest-ensemble (Waiting for Guffman is clearly superior to Best in Show), and maybe one too many Cary Grant-style screwball comedies. you're telling me Wedding Crashers or Zoolander is funnier than Fletch?

bridget Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:08 PM EST

RUSHMORE is my favorite movie, hands down. Awesome.

And WAITING FOR GUFFMAN is funnier than BEST IN SHOW. Especially if you're a "theater" person.

"Do you need us to strike, because we know how to do that."

Okay, so maybe that's not the line verbatum, but you understand.

Rachel Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

...where the eff is 'Office Space?'

yssys Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:46 PM EST

All i can say is ¡No jim Carrey!, they made a list and there is no Jim Carrey, they are Crazy, that`s all i can say

Stephanie Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:42 PM EST

Wrong, Best In Show was a lot funnier than Guffman, in fact Fred Willard was brilliant.

Here are my picks:

Animal House

Vacation and Christmas Vacation

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

The First Police Academy

Airplane!

Fargo

The Kentucky Fried Movie

I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!

Brain Candy

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Time Bandits

Mean Girls

mon Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:30 PM EST

To Jess B, right on about Wayne's World! and about the list lacking ladies.

Jess B. Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:23 PM EST

I like how they did the list in chronological order and tried to spread it out between classics and more modern movies. That makes it slightly less annoying when they leave things out. And thank GOD they included The Jerk, all those Mel Brooks movies, and 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Although, where are The Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters?! And what about Wayne's World, which deserves to be on the list just for the "Bohemian Rhapsody" lip-synch fest at the beginning? And that list needs more ladies, too. Might I suggest Tina Fey's oh-so-witty Mean Girls?

elizabeth Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:15 PM EST

Uh, what about Shrek!! That has to be the funniest movie in recent years. I mean the first one- not the lousy sequel.

Ellie Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:07 PM EST

Where are "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and "Liar, Liar" on the list?

mon Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:04 PM EST

I'm wowed by a couple of the choices as well like "Wedding Crashers". I thought it was a funny and fun movie, but one of the funniest of all time? Not for me. I do love that 40 yr old Virgin made it on the list. Def the funniest movie I'd seen in a long time. Also, happy about Vacation! Still cracks me up on the TBS and TNT repeats. My old fave is Bringing up Baby. I was mixed about Zoolander because when i first saw it, i didn't find it as funny as i'd hoped, but upon multiple viewings on TNT and TBS, it has really grown on me!

One of my personal favorite comedies is Coming to America. Sexual Chocolate!

Miles Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 12:01 PM EST

The list was pretty good, then it hit the year 2000 and the funniest thing we got to show for it is Zoolander. It's really our fault not Premiere's. But we've become less funny with the years... and that list proves it.

jason Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 11:47 AM EST

they just don't make movies (or movie posters for that matter, i've always loved the old-time posters!), like they used to, ah what hollywood has done to ruin everything. the list is cool up until 2000 anyway

Lora Tue, Aug 1, 2006 at 11:46 AM EST

The Premire list is crap...though some of my faves were there, Wedding Crashers?!?!?! Austin Powers?!?!? Are you kidding me with this? And everyone knows Waiting for Guffman is a million times funnier than Best In Show
