Joss Whedon's favorite TV characters -- what are yours?

Aug 23, 2006, 01:12 PM | by Scott Brown

Categories: Television

125412__finola_l So here's what happened: Slither director (and Jenna "Pam from The Office" Fischer husband) James Gunn wrote a list of his 25 favorite TV characters ever. (Yes, Pam was on it.) Now, Gunn is on the radar of Joss Whedon fans because he cast good old Nathan Fillion (Capt. Malcolm Reynolds of Firefly and Serenity) in Slither. So naturally, they took note of the list... and were shocked to find Captain Mal scandalously omitted.

This kicked up some dust on Whedonesque, and eventually resulted in Joss himself lightheartedly weighing in with a rival list. (He wisely disqualifies his own shows from consideration, but oddly includes General Hospital's Anna Devane, played by Finola Hughes, pictured.) And from there? A full-fledged outbreak of list-eria.

I'd like to note that The Wire's Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) does not appear on either list. (Though Gunn gets my love for including Omar Little (Michael K. Williams), hands down the most magnetic black gay gangsta gunslinger privateer on TV ever.)

I'd also like to start a rival list. (Because I'm a scamp that way, and I hope to spark a bloody Internet civil war, then loot the dead avatars of their e-jewels.) I'll get things going, and y'all keep 'em going:

1. Stringer frickin' Bell, obviously.

2. Yeah, Spike. Gotta give it up for James Marsters' Spike. (And not to get in a Buffy rut, but I'd have to agree with the Whedon posters who'd vote for Harry Groener's Mayor Wilkins.)

3. Kyle Secor's quietly ambiguous Tim Bayliss on Homicide

4. Brisco County, Jr. (Bruce Campbell) You try saving the old west from aliens sometime.

5. Data. Next Generation. Forget the movies. Remember ol' Yellow Eyes as he was in his prime.

6. I'd argue Johnny Carson, for the role of Johnny Carson.

Okay, that's six. Who hates me so far?

Keep it going: Who's on your list of the 25 best TV characters of all time?

Addition to Stephanie Travitsky's messge: I thought I had gotten everything in within the one-thousand characters one is allowed to use, but when I posted the message I realized I didn't. I'm going to add the part of the messge that did not get posted due to not getting it in within the one-thousand characters below this message.
ingleschnitz@hotmail.com)
That is the part that should come after the word "and" in the parentheses.) I'm really sorry for this inconvenience.

John Felix Koziol Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 07:56 AM EST

Stephanie Travitsky, I know you're entitled to your picks, but Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean has got to be one of the dumbest characters of all time. Sticking with British commedians, Benny Hill did a multitude of characters and all of them were much better than the single character that Atkinson did. I know this is just my opinion and, like I've already said, you're entiteld to your own, but it amazes me just how many people, my brother and wife included, who actually like Mr. Bean. Zazu, the major domo bird of bird of Mufasa Atkinson played in "The Lion King" is MUCH better than Mr. Bean. But like I already said, this is just my two-cents worth so take it for all it's worth and nothing more. If you care to comment back to me then my e-mail address is literature_lad@yahoo.com or ingleschnitz@hotmail.com. I would love to hear your comments on my comments. In the meantime, please take care. I reallt do hope to hear back from you. Sincerely yours, John (literature_lad@yahoo.com and

Darynthe Mon, Sep 4, 2006 at 03:08 PM EST

1. Spike
2. Dana Scully
3. Lucy Ricardo
4. Mr. Data
5. Max Guevara (Dark Angel)

I think that the most interesting in male characters are Spike and Date because of their not human condition and they way they are played through a journey that develops their characters.

Dana Scully is the best female heroine written for TV. Strong, resilient, patient, intelligent, loving...

Lucy is just timeless and lovable.

Rachel Tue, Aug 29, 2006 at 12:06 PM EST

I'll see you one Stringer frickin' Bell and raise you a Lester effin' Freamon.

Anna Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 04:06 PM EST

Ooh, I love Carlton Banks! Thanks for reminding me.

bootsycolumbia Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 03:22 PM EST

To Peppers_Eggs and Anna, don't laugh at me (okay, go ahead), but one of my fave characters played by a black actor was Carlton Banks on Fresh Prince of BelAir. He always was who he was, and made no apologies for it. There was an episode where he defended himself to the head of a frat house who didn't want to pledge him because he wasn't "black enough". That became one of my favourite episodes of the show.
So:

1. Carlton Banks, Fresh Prince of BelAir
2. The original Iris on Another World (the way she used to torture Rachel on that show was worth dashing home after school to watch)
3. Sgt. Yokas on Third Watch (I loved how she struggled to be a good cop, mother and wife)
4. Jim Rockford, The Rockford Files (my favourite show when it was on--I never missed it)
5. Chandler Bing on Friends (the other ones always got on my nerves at one point or another, but he never did)
6. Olivia Benson on L&O: SVU (heroic)
7. George Costanza on Seinfeld (not heroic)
8. Frank Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond (Peter Boyle never got an Emmy and Doris Roberts got, what, four? Stupid Emmys)
9. Julia on Julia ( I was a little twerp when this show was first on and had no idea that it was a groundbreaking show. I just thought that Diahann Carroll was gorgeous and cool. She still is)
10. Alexis Carrington on Dynasty (I could never figure out why Blake preferred being married to Krystle than to Alexis, who was so much more smokin')
11. Lieutenant Fancy on NYPD Blue (I lost interest in the show after he left.)
12. Q on Star Trek: TNG (I'll also tack on John DeLancie as Eugene in Days of Our Lives)
13. The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager
14. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: TNG (Best. Captain. Ever.)
15. Rhoda Morgenstern on Mary Tyler Moore (loved the scarves)
16. Homey the Clown
17. Barbara Ryan on As the World Turns (but she's not nasty enough anymore--get back to being a meanie, Barb!)
18. Michel on Gilmore Girls (I just love him. He makes me laugh whenever he's on screen)
19. Lou Grant on MTM and Lou Grant (there's a scene in MTM where Lou is poking out pimentos from a piece of lunch meat with a paper hole punch--I laugh until I cry every time I see it)
20. Burke on Grey's Anatomy (I'd fight Yang to the death for him, oh, yes I would)
21,2,3 and 4. The ladies of Sex and the City (it's just not right to pick just one--they're all fantastic)

Rose Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 10:22 AM EST

Everyone has come up with great lists. So many characters that I didn't think but they're all deserving. Since people keep bringing soap characters into their lists I want to give a shout out to Victor Newman, played by Eric Braden on The Young and The Restless. I haven't watched that show in almost 20 years, but I'll never forget Victor - he was "Ruthless"!

kclark Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 09:56 AM EST

1. James Marsters' Spike. Right now, he's my favorite character in...ever.. I laughed, I've cried, I've kissed a million goodbye buying DVD's. Honorable mentions to Sarah Michelle Gellar's memorable character study of Buffy, and David Boreanaz's poignant Angel.

All the rest in no particular order..

For shows airing now, Sawyer is sexy, but I think Locke from LOST has the potential to be one of the greatest characters ever.

Lucy Ricardo, who was a pioneer of television, and even though it's old and black/white, it's still funny.

A friend on my live journal chose Robert Powell's portrayal of Jesus, in JESUS OF NAZARETH. That was one of the great performances, so I'm going to go with that one, too.

Loved Whedon's choice of Anna Devane, but for soaps I'd also have to choose Geary's portrayal of the multi-faceted Luke Spencer, who has won all those Emmy's for good reason. Santa Barbara's Keith played by Justin Deas was also unforgettable. (and Mason/Julia) Then there is Barnabus and Angelique from Dark Shadows, too.

Ed Asner's Lou Grant, from Mary Tyler Moore and Lou Grant.

Darlene from Roseanne. Also, since I'm giving it up for the Gilbert girl's, I loved Melissa Gilbert's portrayal of Laura Ingles Wilder. I cried over this kid so many times.

Dave Addison from MOONLIGHTING, but Maddie too. That show was wonderful at it's peak.

ER is a show I've watched off and on for many years. Clooney was memorable, but I have to say Carter is the one who I think of as the greatest character from this long running series. Will never forget Lucy and Carter after they were stabbed.

Although this show was often silly, John from Allie Macbeal. Wow.

Spock, kirk and Data were great Trek characters, but I think the most memorable performance was Patrick Stewart's Picard.

kathy Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 08:52 AM EST

Oh definitely SPIKE...he'd be my number 1 favorite character, and I agree with a lot of the other choices but I have a few more to add to the list.
How about;
Magnum P.I. (Tom Selleck)
Iolas (Michael Hurst) from Hercules
Barney Fife (Don Knotts)
Zorro (the original one)
The Rifleman (Chuck Connors)
Kolchack (Darren McGavin)
Columbo (Peter Falk)
Kojak (Telly Savalas)
Matlock (Andy Griffith)
Jim Rockford/Maverick (James Garner)

Nose Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 08:39 AM EST

I am with you on Tim Bayliss from Homicide. He was the reason I watched the show. Also, Victor Garber as Jack Bristow on Alias, William Peterson's Gil Grissom from CSI, and there are too many Simpson's characters to name. Megan Mullaley and Sean Hayes in the first few years of Will and Grace also deserve a nod, and the best show currently on tv, as far as I am concerned is Scrubs, and I can include most of the characters from that show..JD, Turk, Carla, Elliot, Cox, Kelso, Janitor..they all rock.

jason Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 08:16 AM EST

the only 2 that matter, luther from coach and jackie from roseanne, played BEAUTIFULLY by the amazing laurie metcalf. oh wait, carla from cheers

here's my top ten tv characters of all time.

10. Chris Keller - Christoper Meloni in OZ. That show came very near to being gay porn sometimes, but his study of a man who would do anything to survive was about the best acting ever to be ignored by those irrelevan Emmy people.

8. Sawyer - in Lost.
7. Jack Bristow - Victor Garber in Alias. "what you really mean to say is you're going to have a loud party on saturday night."

5. Buffy - The Vampire Slayer. into every generation there's only one.
4. seven of nine - Star Trek Voyager. nuff Said.
3. Ally Walker - The Profiler, in Profiler. Can we bring that show back now. she was all c.s.iying before C.S.I.
2. Ashton - North and South Miniseries - Oh, the southern belle slut has never been so tasty.
1. Diana - the Evil Scientist in V and V the Final Battle. I still can't believe she ate that hamster, and had poor Robin become her scientific experiment mating project.

Exactly why is it "odd' that GH's Anna Devane was included? She was/is a kicka** character played by an amazing actress? Is this just more soap opera snobbery insinuating that she or ay other soap character should be ineligible??

Anna Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 11:47 PM EST

Well Peppers_Eggs, there have actually been more than enough blacks on tv to make a list of 25. It's more than a little offensive that you have decided to dismiss some of the great work that has been done on tv just to make some kind of point. Here's 14 more black people to help finish your list (I've actually listed more than 14 names, which is fine since I have no idea how or why Raven ended up on your list):

12) Frank Pembleton and Meldrick Lewis, Homicide
13) Bernie Mac and Jordan, The Bernie Mac Show
14) Lord Bowler, Brisco County Jr.
15) Most of the cast of Frank’s Place, particularly Bertha Griffin-Lamour
16) Dwayne and Freddie, A Different World
17) Florence the maid, The Jeffersons
18) Turk, Scrubs
19) Dr. Benton, ER
20) Shirley, What’s Happening
21) Sherry Palmer (aka Lady McPalmer), 24
22) Geraldine, The Flip Wilson Show
23) Homey D Clown,
24) Regine, Max, Synclaire, and Overton, Living Single
25) Gareth Blackstock , Chef!

thwarted Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 04:13 PM EST

I totally second Bill Haverchuck from Freaks and Geeks. Also, Geoffrey Jellineck from Strangers with Candy...and c'mon, you have to have David Brent from The Office.

Dr. House, Giles, Spike, Dr. Perry Cox, Miranda Hobbs, Eric Cartman (if for no other reason than the words, "Kyle's mother is a..."), Angela Chase, Lex Luthor (as portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum), Dr. Miranda Bailey, Dr. Cristina Yang, Christian Troy (no better, or sexier, antihero on TV), Sydney Bristow, Jack Bristow, Julian Sark. Not an all-inclusive list, but it makes me happy.

zigra Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 02:36 PM EST

One thing I think is evident from this is that supporting characters are almost always more interesting than the "star":

Logan over VM
Spike over Buffy
Norm/Cliff over Sam/Diane
Rev Jim over Judd Hirsch character

Which makes the Dale Coopers and Houses of the TV world so much more fascinating to me. And ensemble shows so popular right now

Side note: my favorite character quirk was Crosetti's Lincoln assassination conspiracy theories on the first two seasons of Homocide (before they tried to pretty that show up)

kmt Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 02:19 PM EST

the education and evolution (and eventual unravelling) of tim bayliss was the crux of homicide. and i agree that the entire cast, excluding any new character after kellerman (well, the ME played by austin pendleton near the end was a welcome surprise), was the greatest cast ever on television. period. point. end of discussion.

jmg Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 02:10 PM EST

I was ecstatic to see Brisco County, Jr played by the wonderful Bruce Campbell on the list. I loved that show and I love him; he's so funny. One of those great shows that FOX cancelled too early to give it a chance.

Also, Norm and Cliff from Cheers. I know that's two characters but they went together, know what I mean?

1. Valerie Cherish

LOVE LOVE LOVE Tim Bayliss!

Actually that entire cast (with the exeception of any new cast member after Mike Kellerman) was phenomenal.

Stephanie Travitsky Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:47 PM EST

Dan:

You are so right. Jennifer had the best one liners on the show. Plus, the flying frozen turkey episode was hilarious!

Barry Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:47 PM EST

Dr. Christian Freaking Troy on Nip/Tuck. So despicable! Gotta love him!

Lora Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:41 PM EST

Keith Mars
Eddie van Blundht from X-Files
Lorelei
and the chick from Wonderfalls

Dan Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:37 PM EST

Can't believe nobody's mentioned WKRP, probably the best ensemble ever. My favourite was Venus Flytrap (aka Gordon Simms).

JenJen Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:23 PM EST

How about some love for Sydney Bristow and Al Swearengen??

Stephanie Travitsky Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:23 PM EST

Mr. Bean

Stewie Griffin

Peter Griffin

Chicken Lady

Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds (SNL Jeopardy parody)

Reverend Jim

Jake and Elwood Blues

Dave Nelson

Bill McNeal

Eddie Murphy as Gumby

Cross777 Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:18 PM EST

Bayliss?!?!? OMFG he was the absolute worst thing about that show.

1. Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson SG1)
2. Sam Tyler (Jon Simm - Life on Mars)
3. Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary - Rescue Me)
4. Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews - Lost)
5. All the great guest stars on Wiseguy;
Sonny Steelgrave - Ray Sharkey
Mel Profit - Kevin Spacey
Suzie Profit - Joan Severance
Roger Lococo - William Russ

It was these guys that made Wiseguy a great show which was killed by the horrible Ken Wahl and his drug addictions.

Kara Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

Excluding all things Whedon, I can think of one character that should make *somebody's* list -

Daisy, from Dead Like Me (In fact, that entire cast was amazing)

jon Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:13 PM EST

Still on the air:

Dr. Melinda Warner - "Law and Order: SVU"
Dr. Miranda Bailey - "Grey's Anatomy"

Off the Air (they don't make 'em like they used to):

Edina Monsoon - "Absolutely Fabulous"
Karen Walker - "Will & Grace"
Paco Ortiz - "Nurses"
Bradley Grist - "The Powers That Be"
Fallon Carrington - "Dynasty"
Peyton Massick - "Savannah"
Tobias Fünke - "Arrested Development"
Principal Blackman - "Strangers With Candy"
Chelsea - "Significant Others"
Dianna Brock - "Central Park West"

(thank you imdb.com for helping with some names)

Sarah C Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:11 PM EST

Lucille Bluth
Lenny Briscoe
Jack Bristow
Dana Scully

mike Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:10 PM EST

Why isn't Emma Peel from the Avengers on any list? I know the Avengers reruns are running on a semiregular basis on BBCAmerica, but it's worth checking the combination of beauty, brains and leather fighting gear.

Stephanie Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

Zach Morris. Nuff said.

Ariella Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:57 PM EST

So neither of them mentioned Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell)? WTF? Ok, so Joss Wheadon (possibly my favorite person-i've-never-met of all time) did include Logan from VM, and he is definately my favorite supporting character, and is totall amazing in every way, but still, without Veronia herself, what have you got? She's inherited the Buffy mantle for self-sufficient, quipy, pro-active teen TV blondes, and I for one, couldn't imagine a favorite television-anything list with out her!

Nicole C Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:55 PM EST

I can't believe that we all forgot about Agent Dale Cooper from "Twin Peaks"!!! Gasp!!!

Nicole C. Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:54 PM EST

Vincent from "Beauty and the Beast"
Claire and David from "Six Feet Under"
Carmela Soprano "Sopranos"
Most of the cast from "Freaks and Geeks", but will give extra praise for Bill, Sam Weir, and Nick.
Alex Keaton in "Family Ties"
Most of "Arrested Development", but Gob ranks the highest in creepy factor
David Brent in "The Office" (BBC)
Jim in "The Office (American)
Willow on "Buffy" or Spike!
Mattie and David on "Moonlighting"
Sam on "Cheers"
Lisa on "Simpsons"
Bender on "Futurama"
Several of the "Degrassi" characters...but particularly Craig, Paige, and Ashley. And Joey Jermiah and Caitlin from the old episodes!
Punky from "Punky Brewster"

Truman Burbank Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:53 PM EST

1) Gareth Keenan
2) Lucille Bluth
3) George Costanza
4) Angelica Deveraux
5) Audrey Horne

JL Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:51 PM EST

Karen Walker (from Will and Grace) is hands down the best sitcom character ever created. No contest.

JL Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:48 PM EST

I am so happy with the inclusion of Anna Devane and the fact that she was the one selected to headline this article. She is hands down the best soap opera character ever (and that includes Erica Kane)!

Jen Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:37 PM EST

T.R. Knight's George O'Malley on "Grey's Anatomy."

Dule Hill's Charlie on "The West Wing."

LOVE the references to Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, and Freaks and Geeks!

Ali Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:33 PM EST

I would have to go with (in no particular order)...
1) Loreali from the Gilmore Girls

4) Willow from Buffy and the Vampire Slayer
5) Elaine from Seinfeld
6) Coach from Cheers
7) Gob from Arrested Development
8) Homer from the Simpsons
9) Bender from Futurama
10) Jayne from Serenity
11) Data from Star Trek the Next Generation
12) Carmella from the Sopranos

Lindsy Serrano Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:33 PM EST

Maryann Thorpe from Cybill! Christine Baranski has so much sass and I love her

DoubleH Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:31 PM EST

OK- I love Stringer Bell! I mean who doesn't want an educated thug on your team. So lotsa votes for him. And my two favorite female heroines Olivia Benson from L&O SVU and Veronica Mars, of course.

Rebecca Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:23 PM EST

It's awesome that you included Stringer on your list. I loved how he incorporated his business school know-how into running the drug gang.

I'd add just about everyone from Arrested Development, because it's one of the best ensemble casts ever.

Lastly, Bill from Freaks and Geeks is simply priceless.

Big Dog Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 12:22 PM EST

Eric Cartman from Southpark is the best character on television. He consistently offers many laugh out loud moments which are rare on tv today.
