'Hairspray': Christopher Walken joins the cast

105334__walken_l As my dear Uncle Freddy once said shortly before he died in a tragic sequin accident, “There’s only one thing better than John Travolta in drag -- and that’s Christopher Walken dancing and singing.” Oh, Uncle Freddy: If only you could see today’s news! The Walken has been cast in Hairspray -- as Edna Turnblad’s husband Wilbur, no less! Which means he’ll be wed to the divine Travolta-trix, the she-John. (So Jim Broadbent’s out. I’m sure he’d have been excellent, but... c’mon! Walken!)

What a pair they’ll make, Walken and Travolta! I assume, nay, demand that “You’re Timeless to Me,” their big love duet in the stage show, will morph into a terpsichorean spectacular. Both are golden-toed hoofer-savants. Both are kitsch icons. My only worry is: If they’re both on-screen at once, will the projector simply collapse under the weight of its own camp?

Really like the idea of Walken but still cannot understand for the life of me why they cast Travolta. I've seen the show on Broadway three times and while I knew they wouldn't go with Harvey Fierstein or Bruce Vilanch for a number of reasons, I cannot picture Travolta as Edna. He's got a LOT to prove.

Billy Crystal I think would've been excellent-but Christopher Walken!?-YES..that is GREAT casting. I can't wait to see this movie.

last I heard they were trying to get Billy Crystal to be Wilbur. Billy would have been perfect but Christopher won't be too bad.

oh slamcut, i'm sure it needs more cowbell.

i haven't seen the musical, but i love the original movie, one of my guilty pleasures. i've not been feeling travola lately, but him dancing and singing and now walken dancing and singing, i must admit, i'm getting kind of excited.

If they would dump Revolting Travolta it would be a hit.

Now THERE's something to look forward to! Ever see Travolta as Babs Streisand? I'd love to see them cohost SNL together, too!

Seeing Christopher Walken and John T in Hairspray together will be like walking into a gay bar in Palm Springs - the gays and the grays!

How can anyone forget that Fatboy Slim video where Walken is dancing and flying all around the hotel?

Maria Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 11:53 AM EST

e, be warned: Walken has about 10 minutes in Pennies from Heaven and the Youtube clip is his only dance number.

That said: Walken! Singing and dancing in a movie! And this time, the movie is a musical! Can't wait :D

Kevin Spacey is going to love this! Now, instead of impersonating Christopher Walken's failed "Han Solo" audition (to date the funniest thing I've ever seen on SNL), and can instead impersonate what it would be like to see Walken on Broadway! Dude!

OMG Im totally psyched for this movie (even though I found the musical to be actually quite ho hum and not worth all the praise it is getting. Its enjoyable but not spectac (except the last song "You Can't Stop the Beat" which saves it all pretty much) with a cast like that! plus Zack Efron too!

zac Thu, Aug 17, 2006 at 10:45 AM EST

i cannot wait for this movie. i love the musical and the cast is sooooo good. michelle pfeifer, queen latifah, travolta, amanda bynes, britney snow, james marsden, and now walken. i cannot wait.

OMG! I'm gonna go rent "Pennies From Heaven" now.

Is there any cow-bell in Hairspray?
