Hey, TV execs: A Saturday-night suggestion...

Jul 10, 2006, 12:05 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Film, Television

93450__vice_lThis just in from the Office of Corporate Synergy: On July 22, NBC will help hype Universal Pictures' Miami Vice by airing the pilot of the TV show that inspired it (along with behind-the-scenes clips introduced by Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell). And while a refresher course on the pastel glories of Crockett and Tubbs 1.0 doesn't seem like a half-bad strategy for promoting what looks like another unappealing TV-to-movie remake, it also could serve as a template for networks trying to revitalize the vast dumping grounds known as Saturday nights. Indeed, why not use Saturdays to air forgotten hits, classic concerts, and miniseries, and shows that have developed cultish post-cancellation followings? I'd totally tune in if Fox indulged in ''yanked-too-soon'' marathons of Profit, Kindred: The Embraced, and Wonderfalls, or if CBS reheated that campy dish called Central Park West. What shows and specials would you dig out of mothballs if you ruled the airwaves?

Stephanie Travitsky Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 03:07 PM EST

Eerie Indiana, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Grounded for Life, Muppets Tonight, Boomer, B.J. and the Bear, Book of Daniel, Grand, Stark Raving Mad.

Michele Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 01:52 PM EST

Wiseguy, Meet John Doe, Nowhere Man, Crime Story, EZ Streets, V (both the miniseries and the series) Northern Exposure, Twin Peaks and Thirtysomething. Boy I watch a lot of T.V.

Cass Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 12:27 PM EST

What a truly brilliant idea...I can't believe TV execs aren't already capitalizing on this...I vote for "The Others" (NBC), "Dark Skies" (NBC), Tim Daly's "Eyes" (ABC), "Angel" (FOX), and "Due South" (CBS).

I would watch reruns of "Dallas" any day of the week on any channel. I would also love to see VH1 ditch some of their Celeb-reality shows and bring back some of the stuff that they ran in the mid to late '90s, like "8 Track Flashback" and reruns of the Dick Cavett Show. So awesome...

Georgi Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 11:07 AM EST

Sports Night, Talk Radio, Square Pegs, Once and Again, Roswell, Alice, Quantum Leap, One Day at a Time, Simon & Simon.....I could go on and on......

Ricky Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 10:48 AM EST

I would love to see one of the networks do something like this. TGIF on ABC was the greatest line-up of shows to watch as a kid and I miss that there isn't anything like it any more. Would be great if ABC did something called "Flashback Fridays" where they would recreate an entire line-up of shows from a specific night back in the day. Example: "Tonight on Flashback Friday we travel back to Tuesday, Nov. 13th 1984." They would then present the shows from that date just as the originally aired. Not just the shows, but the promos and commercials too.

I would also love to see NBC rerun the classic Johnny Carson Tonight Show episodes. That would make for a fun Saturday Night.

Stephanie Travitsky Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 10:43 AM EST

lol.

EP:

See this is why the movie title was changed.
Synopsis:

Rusty a house cat goes out of his house one day and decides to walk into the near by forest. There while chasing, and catching a mouse he sees cats similar to him execpt they are ferrel. The leader Bluestar a Russian Blue cat introduces herself and other members that are with her. She tells him about the four cat clans of the forest and that she is the leader of the Thunderclan. The authors (Erin Hunter actually is two authors)combine Sophoclies with C.S. Lewis and the games Dungeons and Dragons, and Final Fantasy. In fact the books have been so popular with children and teenagers that there are a bunch of role playing games on the internet.

Getting back to brilliant but cancelled:

Max Headrom

Raising Miranda

Brooklyn South

Boomtown

EZ Streets

Crime Story

The Ladies Man

Angie

Spencer (the Chad Lowe version. He quit the first season when he demanded a better pay. Without him the show was awful).

Nicole Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 09:28 AM EST

Okay, okay - this is exciting me. Is that sad? Here is my wish list:

1. Relativity (anyone remember that show? Loved it, and the guy who starred in it with Kimberly Williams - what was his name and where the hell is he nowadays??) Update: I just checked - David Conrad, and he's apparently on Ghost Whisperer - poor, poor man. He's awesome.

2. Freaks and Geeks (I have the dvd set, but it would be great for a new audience to discover the genius of this show)

3. Malibu Shores (Kerri Russell, Christian Campbell, Charisma Carpenter, Tony Lucca......wow I loved this show when it was on).

4. The 90's movies-of-the-week with teenish stars like Tori Spelling, Sarah Chalke, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and many more. I think there were on Mondays on NBC for the most part.

Jen Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 07:49 AM EST

To the person who liked, FASTLANE, they are showing reruns of it on TV ONE (the better, BET alternative)

clay Tue, Jul 11, 2006 at 12:01 AM EST

Does anyone remember a great CBS summer replacement series called "Middle Ages"? It starred Peter Riegert & Amy Brenneman. I think it only aired a few episodes, but I remember those as being extremely well written.

jon Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 11:00 PM EST

I don't have a show to add, just had to say that I LOVE 'Central Park West' or CPW to those in the know. Can quote lines from it (yes, I know that's sad). It was the best worst show to ever be on TV and the moment its on DVD, I'm there.

Darkness Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 10:27 PM EST

Stuff that no one else has mentioned:

CBS' "Now and Again". "Firefly" from Fox. Let's go way back for "Quark" from NBC. That show was "Red Dwarf" before there was a "Red Dwarf". Heck, I'd even call for "Surface" (NBC) to come back.

(OK, so Firefly did get mentioned. It needs to be said over and over again. Firefly needs to come back.)

TV FAN Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 10:00 PM EST

Tim Daly's "The Fugitive"

Those "Movie of the Week" from the 70's (especially the Linda Blair ones)

Linda Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 09:06 PM EST

1. Miami Vice
2. Wiseguy
3. Remington Steele

David Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 05:19 PM EST

PAPER DOLLS!!!

Anna Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 04:40 PM EST

At least Arrested Development is available on dvd. My vote is for Andy Richter Controls the Universe.

Ep Sato Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

Wow, the Warriors as cats? DUDE! I'll watch just for the chance to see the cat with the bottles around his paws.

"Meow-arriors, come out to playyyyy!"

Oh, that totally made my day. Thanks :)

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 04:10 PM EST

EP:

I am not sure what the deal with the remake of Warriors myself. I heard that it might be pushed back until the fall. I did read that finally that Erin Hunter's Warriors book series will be made into a live action movie featuring real cats but the vocals will be computerized similar to Doctor Doolittle. It will focus on the first three books and my guess is that the sequels will also be grouped into threes. It will be called "The Wasrriors of the Forest" and Michael Clark Duncan will be the voice of Tigerclaw, the villian. I am curious to see how the animators are going to pull off the fight scenes.

I agree with Riptide and the Greatest American Hero, and the Misfits of Science, but Freaks and Geeks has to be added into the mixture too.

Kat Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 03:59 PM EST

two words :Arrested development

Ep Sato Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 03:59 PM EST

I like Molly's idea of bringing back Karen Sisco. HOWEVER, I felt that J.lo made that character a lot more fun to watch in "Out of Site". Maybe they could just have a "Elmore Leonard's cancelled series" channel? They could show episodes of Maximum Bob too...

I'd have it on the dial right next to my "fake cancelled shows" channel, where they show all my favorite episodes of Viking Quest and Fox Force Five.

Molly O'Poverty Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

i really liked "Miss Match" for some odd reason.

i also quite liked Tim Daly's show "Eyes" from last season that didn't seem to click with audiences. i don't think they gave it a chance. Also, "Karen Sisco", Matthew Fox's pre-LOST show "Haunted" and "The American Embassy" on Fox in '01.

D Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 03:30 PM EST

Easy:

8 - 9 p.m. Knight Rider
9 - 10 p.m. A- Team
10 - 11 p.m. Riptide

and as a bonus, if you decide to do some retro programming for Saturday morning, how about adding Kid Video from, say, 11- 11:30, so I'm up in time to watch it?

Jill Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 03:27 PM EST

Bring back "Profiler" a former Saturday night staple!

duy Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 02:59 PM EST

"Action!" and "Popular"

K Diddy Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 02:33 PM EST

FASTLANE, That show was bangin'! At least bring it to DVD!!!!

Ep Sato Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 02:31 PM EST

F all that. I want to know what the heck happened to Walter Hill's remake of the Warriors. They gave us the BS 'Directors cut' (with no bonus scenes included), and the most violent video game ever, but skipped out on the MOVIE that all these peripheral goodies were supposed to be supporting. Where are the Warriors? I want these Warriors. Alive if possible, otherwise Wasted.

Nicole Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 02:26 PM EST

2Ge+er, soo funny from MTV, at least they need to get all the episodes and the TV movie together on DVD for us fans!

Geno Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 01:29 PM EST

"Greatest American Hero" ruled! And a more recent wound that hasn't healed...save "Huff"!!

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 01:13 PM EST

The Others was so odd but pretty cool.

Conviction and Trial by Jury were good shows but the problem with T by R is that there are too many Law and Order spin offs.

I agree that Cupid should not have been cancelled, and the same with Arrested Development.

As for other classics:

Talk Radio the series and The Associates with Martin Short and Alley Mills.

Kimmie G Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, no question, would keep me home every Saturday night (as if I'm not already). I'd probably hang out with Miami Vice too, as well as Alias, Laugh-In, Friends, The A-Team, Dawson's Creek and Roswell. (Yep, I loved the WB back in the day.)

Alvin Krinst Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:59 PM EST

The short-lived but devilishly compelling early-'90s series "2000 Malibu Road" never even aired in its entirety; it deserves a full revival. It had a great cast (Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Beals, Tuesday Knight), tongue-in-cheek quality and outrageous soap-spoofing savvy that prefigured "Desperate Housewives."

Christine Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:58 PM EST

I'd love to see the Elvis biopic starring Kurt Russell. My 14 year old self didn't know who Elvis was, but I sure had a crush on "The Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes".

mike Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:49 PM EST

It's the age of tivo and the DVR. There could be actual programming on Saturday night.
From the trailer for Miami Vice, the movie doesn't look much like the first season of the TV show.

Jakeem Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:22 PM EST

I sure would have liked to see "Reunion" play out for an entire season!

brandonk Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:17 PM EST

I know a lot of people "do stuff" on Saturday night, but quite often, I'm home and wouldn't mind watching TV, except there's nothing on that I want to watch. This sounds like a fun suggestion.

kriselda jarnsaxa Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:12 PM EST

Oh, man, "The Others" rocked! And it was on NBC - just one of many shows that they've kicked too soon (see "Conviction" for a recent example... ugh). "Tru Calling" has some real potential on Fox, and I'm SO glad to know I'm not the only fan of "Kindred: The Embraced" - that was a fun one. My husband would really get a kick out of revisits to "Misfits of Science" and "Catwalk"

kathy Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:03 PM EST

It's never too sign to fight for any return of AD, even if it would be for one magical night only...

Christopher Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:02 PM EST

UnSub, with David Soul... The Others... and The Lone Gunmen!

djm Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 12:00 PM EST

There was a show that was on back in 2001(ish) called "The Others" that I would love to see again. I can't remember which network it was on, but I remember it being a really creepy show that was fun to watch. Unfortunately I was working a job that switched me to nights and by the time I went back to days and could watch it had been cancelled.

Tiff again Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 11:51 AM EST

Action! I can't believe I forgot that one!

Tiff Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 11:49 AM EST

Firefly, Strange Luck, Brisco County Jr. (which comes out on DVD next week!!!), Dark Angel, Threshold

Those are the ones right off the top of my head.

Ragna Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 11:36 AM EST

Firefly. For the love of all Browncoats, show Firefly again!

Kat Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 11:18 AM EST

I'd have them pull out "Cupid," Jeremy Piven's inventive one season show, "Brisco County Jr." with the great Bruce Campbell, and "Frank's Place," all of which I'd be happy to watch again.

Nancy Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 11:16 AM EST

Is it still too soon to suggest Arrested Development? Stupid Fox.
