First Look: The new 'Buffy' comic

Jul 18, 2006, 09:20 AM | by Scott Brown

Categories: Books, Television

173745__buffy_l From comics she was born, and to comics she shall return: Buffy the Vampire Slayer's post-cancellation adventures will soon begin anew -- penned by Joss Whedon himself -- in the pages of Dark Horse Comics. Here's an exclusive cover image (by artist Georges Jeanty) from issue No. 1. As you can see, she's kept in shape during her hiatus. (Dark Horse will debut No. 1 at Comic-Con this week.)

This isn't Buffy's first foray into comics. And it remains to be seen if it ranks anywhere near Joss Whedon's best foray into comics: the all-too-brief "future slayer" saga Fray, which follows the dystopic advetures of Buffster's 24th-century successor. (Some will persuasively argue that this is Joss' best comics effort. I will counter with a spin move and the old axe-to-the-head. So watch it.)

So what's going on in the extended Buffyverse? Well, you may recall the show ended with the creation of an army of Slayers. Now they're organized, and the tide has turned in favor of the good guys. Ah, but you know how much Whedon hates winners: Soon an "old enemy" surfaces (Dark Horse is cagey on Big Bad's identity), and Dawn starts "experiencing serious growing pains." I hope that means the Scoobies will be fighting a mutant, undead Alan Thicke.

I would love a movie, as long as they kept all the same actors. And no, that was not the real Eliza.

Richard L. Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

Did Eliza really post to this site or am I just naive? It's pretty cool if she did. Anyway, if I am not mistaken, Joss said that the comic Buffy season 8 format allows them to do things the tv program could never do. The cost would be too much. No, what we all need is not Buffy and Angel resurrected, no we need a Buffy and Angel MOVIE. Then, they can spend 100 million to make it and the visuals would be fantastic. Obviously, Joss should write and direct it. I wonder if it will ever happen. In the meantime, the comics (Buffy and Angel) rock with in my opinion, Buffy being just a bit better than Angel. I know Angel season 6 is only out for 3 months as of today, but still, the quality of the Buffy comic just seems better. And Eliza, if that was really you, I love you babe!!! Slay on!!!!

Diamion Stallworth Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

It sounds like the story written on the comic book for Buffy Season 8 is wonderful. However, I would rather see this seaon on a regular Television series than a comic book. Please bring back Buffy to the television series.

GMM Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

I think putting season 8 out as a comic is a great idea by Joss. I've been collecting comics for about 20 years now and I think it's a good way to bring people into a different form of entertainment. A lot of Buffy fans who have never picked up a comic will decide to check it out. I give my girlfriend all the credit for getting me into BTVS. In fact, I just started a Buffy Season 8 blog. And I hate to say it but, Whedon's first six issues have NOT been very good. Of course, this is just my opinion. But has anyone else been reading the series? What do you think so far?

Oh and by the way I'll be Buffy I kind of favor her anyway. You can check me out on www.myspace.com/elizabethanntaylor2 and besides I am 31 and am about the age she would need to be. Ha!

Elizabeth Taylor Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

You have got to bring it back. The way it ended. I am sorry Sarah Michelle Gellar can try and branch out into the MOVIE world all she wants but to everyone of her fans, she is BUFFY!! At least bring a movie out into the big screen finalizing all of it. But, Buffy needs to be with Angel, not Spike, please GROSS!! Anyway keep it real JOSS and bring it back. How many responses do you need to see The WORLD is not done with BUFFY....

Emma Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 02:24 AM EST

I was so disappointed when Buffy series ended. It broke my heart to see Spike die as well. I love Angel but especially Spike. I really wish that if they cant bring it back on TV...at least they could make a DVD where there is actually a happy ending between Buffy and Spike..if not Angel!! I watch this Series almost everynight and this actually opened my eyes to love as well and the varieties of it. Please JOSS!! Put Buffy on DVD...a finale at least. Or at least Bring Spike on the Comics...grrr...I LOVE BUFFY.

I have been a fan of BTVS and Angel for a few years now and, this is the first time that I have ever attempted to express how or why I fell in love with joss whedon's creations. The actors on the show were average at best;with a couple of exceptions(James Marsters and Sarah Michelle Gellar), but the stories that were told every week were some of the most imaginative and well produced tv episodes that have ever been put on the air. The writers had an ability to toy with your emotions while watching an episode. You can be totally into a dramatic or action packed scene and they would throw in a very timely joke to make you laugh. I'm glad Joss has decided to bring the story of "The" Slayer back to the fans, even if it is in the form of a comic book. A great story like that should be told for as long as it can last, in any form. I am a fan of Joss Whedon and his work and I would encourage anyone who has an imagination to give his brain a try through his work. The guy is very good at it.

Prudence Mon, Aug 6, 2007 at 09:31 AM EST

I'm amazed at the how the posters here have such a grasp on the English language. Anyway, the comic is genius. I haven't picked one up since I was a kid so this will be fun. I can't wait. As far as another on screen Buffy, whether tv or movie, all the stars are busy with other things and have changed quite a bit in four years. I don't think it would be the same, even with the same actors. I enjoy reading and this reading will include pictures! How great is that?!

MYK Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 01:47 AM EST

Joss was planning on doing a WILLOW and SPIKE movie spin-off but then decided to do the comics. And there's rumors going around that IF Joss do decide to make a new BUFFY movie, it will be that ugly girl from MILLION DOLLAR BABY to claim the lead role of Buffy Summers... I say everyone should start a petition...

Jayde Matthew Weir Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 02:03 AM EST

I LOVE BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER!

Julia Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

I love buffy the vampire slayer tv series than in comic books. I brought all the complete seasons. I really hope that season 8 should be in tv series too. Could you plase, bring buffy back on tv series? I'm a big fan of buffy the vampire slayer. Please, make my wish come true. Many fans had hope too. & is there any continuation of sngel series? In season 5 there is no ending? Didn't know who win the battle.

the bad slayer Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 06:38 AM EST

for those of you who want to read the 8th season buffy comic (Dark Horse) you can get it in Forbidden Planet. There are stores in Glasow, London, Bristol, Birmingham, Coventry, Croydon, Southampton, Newcastle, Liverpool and Cambridge. enjoy!

OLIE Tue, May 29, 2007 at 06:54 PM EST

I really do think that Buffy was not only aa fantastic show in its own right, but a genuine living legend... It has completely opend the eyes of millions of sceptics round the world to believe magic may be real and have toe children of the world sleep with one eye open now they know what really may lay beneath their hiughschool... I do think that maybe the 7th season finale wasnt the best way to go out...It deffinately ahd some fantastic points...Anyas Death...Buffy being gutted and fighting her inner self(her doubt) I think one more season would go down a hit or even a big screen movie would be incredible just to see how everyone ended up and have the ultimate fight just involving Buffy the vampire Slayer and the Ultimate Evil...Wahts the thing that created..? The First...? But who created that...? Lets hope to find out...

Angel Rose Tue, May 15, 2007 at 01:38 AM EST

I really love buffy with angel, I agreed that it should bring back on tv or in the big screen. I really wish to josh to make a movie for angel and buffy together. They are the perfect couple for us here. Angel is a part of Buffy's world since from the start of the show, so please don't take away Angel from Buffy world. They were have a perfect chemistry together. :)

christa Sun, May 6, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

ok, it would be great if buffy could come back on tv, but most of the actors wouldn't do it, most of them are done with btvs. and i don't know about you, but i dont want to watch a bunch of strangers doing my favorite tv show.

the tony Thu, May 3, 2007 at 11:37 PM EST

Buffy is the single greatest show ever. I quite like the idea of the series changing medium, not that i have ever read a comic, but by changing medium it simply adds to the greatness that is Buffy. In comic form she will never get old, she can live on, fighting evil for generations to come. Whedon is a genius.

angelus Wed, May 2, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

This looks amazing. And I hear part of it is set where I live- Scotland!! Does anyone know where I can buy these comics?

mike R Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

they brought buffy back to life because she died by supernatural reason not killed by a gun like tara which is not supernatural and why but why buffy lived is because williow use dark black magic and she did not dye suddley tara died soon as it hit her heart the blow's out ya nevser's system and doctor knows that but ya i do wish they would of keep her around longer at least to the end but look they killed Anya off in the final mrs.summer, ms. clander, kendra, more

Cheers for your help

I think that this is great to bring her back and if it could be a tv show again, imagine the response you would have old fans and new ones. You could even do a show with the same premise but maybe in another dimension. That woudl be sweet too.

Peachy Tue, Mar 20, 2007 at 08:51 PM EST

Chibs--Faith is supposed to be making an appearance in later issues. Just be patient.

As for me, I pine for Willow.

I highly reccomend it if you can get yer paws on it!

Wynn Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

This MIGHT be worth the time & effort if they bring Tara back. The show went down the toilet after they killed her, and as nice as it would be to have Buffy back, I can't say I'm all that excited about seeing it continue down the same road as Seasons 6 & 7.

Bring Tara back, get the old chemistry and magic of the show back, and you'll get a TON of the old fans back (like myself).

Jadesha Gilliam Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 09:01 PM EST

Well, it a good idea for the comics but wouldn't be more better than watching it on t.v. We all the those actors. I wouldn't won't anyother actor taking any of there places. We all had fun with the actors and sad times. thats what brought the show alive. I think joss for creating Buffy it was the best show ever. I'm one of the biggest fans. Every body will miss the T.V. show. It do come on around 7am but really know body be up. I think buffy will be great in a comic and T.V.

Tristan Mon, Feb 19, 2007 at 01:48 AM EST

yea i really hate the fact that the new season is on comic books i hate it and it ruins it for me i want to watch it i want the show. and what ever happend to the tv movie that j.w was sopposably makeing ???

Claire Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 04:31 AM EST

As much as it saddens me to say this but Buffy should not be brought back onto telivion. It was a great show, one of the best but how can you bring back something over and over again until it has lost its spark. I think the comic is a great idea and will do nicely for those fans who choose to follow it but for me the story ended at season 7 and will probably remain the best show I have ever seen. I like happy endings and thats what Joss gave us at the end of it all. All the characters had grown up. Do you really want to see Buffy dating again? Xander moving on from Anya? Willow dicerging into her relationship that moves Tara further away and maybe without a good ending. Nothing lasts forever.

Tom W Tue, Feb 13, 2007 at 05:45 AM EST

I agre with J.W that the comic book is a very good route to take. Many of the series actors have said that they enjoyed where they left their characters and wouldn't want to return to that now to demolish what they created. Also James Marsters is looking older and its true he's supposed to be ageless, I believe that he is a brilliant actor but what is really important about keeping a legend such as Buffy alive, is continuity. Because lets face it what would be worse than coming back four years later and starting to analyse the ways in which everything had changed and what the characters looked like. I think the only way around this is to do a comic book version (which I am very much loking forward to) or to have it set in the present day. Also we all have to consider the fact that most of the Buffy/Angelverse actors have closed that chapter in their lives and probably wouldn't return now! I would much love to see the show brought back,I miss it! Give Joss credit does he ever fail us?

Jadesha Gilliam Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

So J.W. are you saying James Marster wont play as spike because he is to old. Well i love james marsters i want him to play as spike. He is very hot. I dont care i want him to play as spike. J.W. you have to ammit he a great actor.

J.W. Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

I think it is a fantastic idea that Buffy's eighth season will be in comic format. As Joss Whedon specified in an interview, there are no boundaries in a comic format. I have read other Buffy comics, and his statement is definitely true.

Most of the actors that appeared in Buffy are mostly involved in other projects, and perhaps they would not like to revisit the characters they once played. Another factor is that four years have passed, and the actors have matured to the point that they can no longer play characters in their early 20's. Even James Marsters said that he would only do a Spike movie if it was done before he looked too old for the part (after all, he is supposed to be an ageless vampire).

I am eager to see where Joss Whedon and other writers take the Buffy mythos in the comic. Kudos to them for embarking on this project.

I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer should be on TV not a comic.I love that show its more enteresting in watching it. I love Spike, Buffy, Willow and the rest. So please put back on fox. We love Buffy the Vampire Slayer show. Please, Please, Please!!!

JB Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

My buddy introduced me to "Buffy" just a little over a year ago. I'd heard of the show when it was on primetime TV but had never watched it (my bad!). Once I began watching the series on FX, I was HOOKED. I've now seen every episode of both "Buffy" and "Angel" (some via FX, some on DVD). It saddens me that none of the plans to continue the story on TV have panned out. It also confuses me: if there is so much of an outcry for some story continuance from fans worldwide, what is really the problem with launching it? I know it would take a lot of effort and money to get the project off the ground, but...just do it!

Stephanie Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

I think having a new comic series of Buffy is a wonderful idea. After season seven, I'm sure that will be no easy task. Many popular characters were killed: ie Spike and Anya. I read interviews with Joss Whedon about if Anya/Spike would return, but nothing was mentioned about Tara? I believe a lot of ratings ended up falling after Tara's horrific death on the show. It might be a good idea to bring her back, to return Willow/Tara fans for this Season Eight on Dark Horse. I have collected several Dark Horse comics with storylines around Willow/Tara. I certainly would be interested in buying the entire season if there would be a "band-aid" on a long over due cliched wound.

Mark Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 07:37 PM EST

I don't like the idea. The real Buffy we all know and like was born as a tv show and should die as a tv show.

A Buffy comic? With no Angel characters? I'm sorry, but sadly for me, Buffy and Angel ended 3 years ago.

audrey Sat, Dec 30, 2006 at 05:42 AM EST

oh my god! it's been what 3 yrs, and watching the last eps. i was in tears man. i kept on reading the novels and sorta re-read the 'queen of the slayers' just visualising the whole thing and then i saw the headline on SFX and Wizard, and SHOCK. TOTAL SHOCK. i couldnt belive it, she's back! joss is back! everyone's back!Buffy's back!i'll do the snoopy dance once i finish this.

Stu Tue, Dec 26, 2006 at 02:49 PM EST

I for one would like to say that I am super excited about the comic and I think it was a smart move on Joss' part to create it. It should have greater possibilities than the show or a movie would, and those would have had trouble (ie getting the actors) anyways. I felt like the way buffy ended was perfect, but still can't wait to read what happened after!
thanks Joss.

Dan Wed, Nov 29, 2006 at 09:57 PM EST

I really wish thats instead of a comic, they would amke one big Buffy the Vampire slayer concluding ending in a big 2 and a half hour movie event it hink the only thing thats holding them back is lack of ideas to put inot it and getting all the actors together. Personallly i didn't get much into Angel as much as did get into Buffy but i know it takes a whole season of Buffy to get a main focus point acrossed like for example season 5 where it takes the whole season for them to figure out Dawen and finnaly Buffy dies now putting something great like this into a 2 hour movie might be near impossible. But i would just liek to see Sara Michelle Gellar (buffy) get back to together with Alyson Hannigan (willow) and Nicholas Brendan (Xander) for one final blow out conclusion to see what tehy ahve been doing over the last years that we haven't seen them, hopefully the comic willc apture this for me but seeing sara michelle gellar on the big screen playing Buffy would be a dream come true. So plz Joss if your out there if its possible to just make one last movie of Buffy with the original actors it would be so cool if you did and i would probably see it 2 or 3 times. LOL

My daughter and I just wanted to thank you for Buffy and Angel...for my part, Buffy...as my girl loves tall, dark, and handsome...Angel:)
I was saddened to see the series end but knew that the kids, like all of us, have to eventually enter the boring and mind-numbing realm of adulthood.
But we are two of the 100 people that you made the series for and are deeply greatfull for it!!!!!
Thank You and your superb cadre of Pros for an outstanding experience!!!!!
Btw, I bought all seven seasons on dvd:)

This was one of the best series I have ever gotten so emotionaly envolved with. It's truley a soap from daytime television and with that being said they continue to keep the same cast along with the story line going for years and years... Just give us some closer to both series. Tell, us what happens to Buffy - Spike and Angel. We all want to know. Spin the two together and end the questions we all have.

irina Wed, Sep 27, 2006 at 03:02 PM EST

P.S.
Just a side note. I really hope that this new comic will have nothing to do with Queen of the Slayers, because that was just weird.
Dawn wearing a hot pink outfit? Ummm...no thanks. A future magic child from two vampires? Again, really no thanks.
I just thought that the characters in that book were portrayed incredibly juvenile. And frankly, annoying.
Although the bits about Oz were decent and that story arc had potential. You know, picture a splashy little issue featuring Oz and his fellow wolf friends as they learn to control their powers and perhaps save a small Nepalese village or two.
As to the subject matter of whom she should end up with, Angel or Spike. At this point, I can't see either. I just can't see either SPike or Angel becoming human. They're not all that useful then. With the not being able to fight etc. And don't bring Xander up in regards to normal humans having the ability to do as much as etc.
Although, if I were to get very sentimental, Buffy would be with Angel. Cause, you know, first love and all that. The sweeping romance...
But for now, it should all be about becoming a cookie

irina Wed, Sep 27, 2006 at 02:53 PM EST

Buffy rocked from the start and keeps on rocking even though the show has gone to TV graveyard land. I've been dying to get my hands on this comic and I can't find a release date ANYWHERE. Or new posts, there's nothing after July, maybe early August. I have scoured the Dark Horse website, no news. My pain goes on.
Has someone heard something new?
I want - need - must get this comic!
I can't wait!

Sarah Tue, Sep 26, 2006 at 02:06 PM EST

I was a very big fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer & Angel and I still am. I was really gutted that both shows ended because they were really great shows to watch over & over again, I hope they will return Buffy Season 8. If it ever does return I hope they keep James Marsters (Spike) in the series because he played a really funny role!

Cal Mon, Sep 25, 2006 at 12:18 PM EST

Bring buffy bck plz it was the best show eva i was gutted when it ended nd then i was realy depressed

Elizabeth Phend Wed, Sep 20, 2006 at 08:42 PM EST

First off... my daughter became a fan of the show at the age of 10 and is now 13... thus reruns.. I know own all Angel, Buffy, and of course Charmed DVD's.. She was been so inspired by it that she has written a series animee for Adult Swim's 2006 contest. Well long story short she has 2 months to put it together. So I have to say thank-you... She loves Buffy and Angel.. and we have both finished the last book.. Queen of Slayers and think it would be easy for Joss to work out a new link from it or even a big hit movie.. Buffy/Angel are the highest seller of merchandise on e-bay.. I know! I spent 4 months digging up stuff my girls 13 birthday in July. So with that if ya think ya know Buffy well ya haven't seen anything yet...Besides you should see what she came up with to continue the show..Not bad for a kid. And yes the original cast a few new guys is the only way to go... Well da but James should get the shanshoe prophecy gift someone has too and we already know who can't thus yes Buffy can end up with either one of them but not really only one..lol

jeff Sun, Sep 17, 2006 at 09:31 PM EST

bring buffy back and its original cast it would be awesome it the best series ever

Logan Morris Sat, Sep 16, 2006 at 12:12 AM EST

The Buffy & Angel shows were long lived and quite entertaining, but they ended. I'm curious as to why people think Buffy would end up with either Vampire? In both situations it wouldn't work. Angel & Spike also found out that Buffy is now with the immortal, someone that obviously outdid them both for hundreds of years.
Now to briefly touch on a point, someone said that Spike was useless. Well maybe he never quite measured up but he was trying to become the man Buffy could love. For that he deserves some props, so he wasn't perfect. But his journey was about becoming... not about earning. Buffy would have the final say, and if you remember she was the only one who truely believed in him, even when he didn't. Also for those James Martsers/Spike bashers always remember this, Spike was supposed to be dusted in his second episode, but his chemistry with all the other actors/actresses and his audience appeal led him to a much better role in the big picture or Buffyverse.
Angel and Buffy pairing, yes they definatley had chemistry. He was the kind of guy she could really count on. But bear in mind that he paid a big price to allow Buffy time to grow up. Not to mention the fact that Angel is now with Nina, and assuming he survives the battle against the senior partners army I would be going back to her. No offense to Sarah Michelle Gellar but the actress who plays Nina is more atractive then SMG in my opinion.
I honestly believe that the Angel story was about Redemption, a battle that never ends! So as curious as I may become the show ended as a way to tell you that attonement isn't a destination it's a journey. As sad as it is people never remember the good things you do but always remember the bad things you did. Case and point... see Cordelia upon returning from the higher plane.
Also some side thoughts to irritate other Buffy/Angel fans, since Angel signed his name Angel istead of Liam does it really make him unable to be the chosen Vampire with a soul? Why couldn't Spike be the Vampire the scroll is talking about? In the fight against Angel he made some great arguments. My last tid bit will be the most annoying... what if niether Angel or Spike are the Vampire the scroll is referring to? Because they are both Champions but in the end of Angel season 5 I'm convinced they're history. Maybe somehow Illyria would survive, but based on the sheer numbers it doesn't look good for team angel.

Meena Tue, Aug 29, 2006 at 11:26 AM EST

please bring back buffy and with spike it will get so many viewers and all the cast will get so much money if anyone wants to sign a petition we should all get together and find a way to contact joss whedon contact me at lilmischeeky13@hotmail.co.uk

ChristianNYC Fri, Aug 25, 2006 at 12:01 AM EST

Oh god Spike was NOT the moneymaker of the Buffyverse. What pipe have you been smoking?

Spike was the most human? REALLY?

Hmmm if you call trying to rpae Bufy, killing 2 Slayers, trying to kill Willow on a few ocassions, Stalking Buffy, stealing her clothes and being obssessed with her "HUMAN" then yeah.

That bleached blond, anorexic look went out the window with the Farrah Fawcett hairdo ages ago.

First of all, Buffy should go back on TV!!!!! I don't get why it was cancelled in the first place. Also, it was NOT right that Spike was dusted at the end of season 7!!!! He should come back somehow in season 8!!! PLEASE!!!

Andrew Tue, Aug 15, 2006 at 01:00 PM EST

is there a way to subscribe to this comic?

Alex Fri, Aug 11, 2006 at 09:01 PM EST

I like Spike, he is a very good character but I didn't like him on Angel. I thought his death in s7 was the perfect end to his story because he finally gets what he wants. Peace. It is also very anoying when you go to sites to look at Buffy and Angel related things and all you get rammed in your face is Spike. Yes my comment on his appearance was wrong but so is every commment made about his appearance good or bad. He is a great actor and his job is to act and bring Spike to life, not get nearly every single woman in the world calling him hot. Yes he is wonderful man and I like him but is it really fair to say ' I can't wait to see Spike because he is so hot'. IMO it's not. You should be looking forward to seeing him perform, not look pretty.

Kimberlee Wed, Aug 9, 2006 at 11:29 AM EST

What the hell is up with all the Spike hatred? Spike was, and is, an awesome character with a character arch that Joss should be immensely proud of. Despite anyone's personal feelings about the Buffy/Spike pairing, it served a vital purpose in the show. BTW, that personal attack on the physicallity of Spike is pretty low - James Marsters is personally a wonderful person with extaordinary talent, who I've never heard speak a disparaging word about another person if he could help it. Come on, people. These are more than just characters in a tv show - actors are human beings. It's like when everyone was pissed when Tara joined the show and everyone was calling her fat and ugly. First off, untrue. Second, are we in second grade? You don't like the character, fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Keep it clean, keep it fun.

Sean Wed, Aug 9, 2006 at 03:54 AM EST

Okay, I take it back! I am so sorry to have doubted you your Jossness! I just read your post on WHEDONesque.com about the comic. Sorry, so sorry.

Sean Wed, Aug 9, 2006 at 03:05 AM EST

Okay, I cannot find Joss's email address anywhere, and the ONE thing I really want to know about this awesome idea for a season 8 comic (beautiful way to keep us all attatched to the Buffster Joss!) is will you take into consideration of Nancy Holder's brilliant novel (even though I wasn't too sure about the ending) Queen of the Slayers.
I mean, that book followed the storyline as they drove off from the hole that was Sunnydale (where the mall was!) and it did stick quite well to the few events mentioned in Angel's final season. So I guess what I'm really asking is: will Joss change THAT story arc, or will he follow the events AFTER the book?

db Mon, Aug 7, 2006 at 11:31 AM EST

*sigh* I am really looking forward to reading this... and could care less about Spike making an apperance - I just wanna see what Joss' brilliant mind unveils. My only wish is that somehow, someway, somewhere there'd be a Tara in there. Do you hear that Joss? I *still* miss her.

Alex Fri, Aug 4, 2006 at 07:02 PM EST

I think it will be interesting to see what happened to Buffy after Sunnydale but I would much rather find out what happened to Angel. I know he survived but I want to know if he will ever shanshu. I mean come on, he deserves it so much. He was willing to give it up so he deserves it.

I am very glad that there will be no revival of Spuffy. It was a stupid relationship that promotes domestic violence. It was disgusting. I much prefer sweet, tender, loving ships like Bangel, Cangel, Tillow, Willoz, Fresley, Frunn. These I like.

Oh and ladies. Spike is not hot. He is ugly, lanky and has crap hair. He does not hold a show together and should have remained dead in Sunnydale. He was absolutely pointless on Angel and just served to give a few cheap laughs and to make Angel look even more deserving of happiness and the shanshu. He could never replace Cordy on Angel. The shows were held together by the acting talents of SMG, AH, ASH, DB, CC, AD, AA, GQ, JAR and CK.

Pants Fri, Aug 4, 2006 at 10:41 AM EST

Joss is GOD and SMG is talented, beautiful, and all around fcuking awesome. I know KS was the original Buffy, but now no one but SMG can be Buffy...that's all there is to it. This comic book will rock. More than rock...it will...um...uber rock...that was lame, but you get the point...yeah.

ben Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 11:54 AM EST

if they made a movie with another actress playing buffy i swear i would kill myself. Sarah michelle gellar is the only one who could play the sexy super vixen. kristy swanson, (as nikki from big brother would say) WHO IS SHE!!!

Scott Fri, Jul 21, 2006 at 05:13 PM EST

Swanson isn't Gellar. A movie featuring the beautiful and talented SMG as Buffy would blow the doors straight off the place. Damn man.
A movie featuring DB as Angel, yeah, I would get behind that, especially if it also featured one blonde supercharged slayer.
Good times.

Tiffany Reed Fri, Jul 21, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

Seriously?!?!?! Seriously???!? I think I just had a heart-attack. My all-time favorite heroine (well next to the X-Men gals) and my favorite medium...oh Joss you sent me into heaven.

Kenneth Cole Fri, Jul 21, 2006 at 03:11 PM EST

First, the movie has already been done. Remember Kristy Swanson was the infamous Buffster so making another one would not be a good idea. Maybe an Angel or Spike movie would be better.

Carmine Castelli Fri, Jul 21, 2006 at 02:58 PM EST

OMG!!! EXCITED....ALSO MAKE A BUFFY MOVIE JOSS!!!!!

cris Fri, Jul 21, 2006 at 02:10 PM EST

we want buffy on tv back!

Scott Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 09:52 PM EST

Wow, that's an eye catching image there. Doesn't resemble SMG quite enough but still looks hot as hell.
Good one for the artist.
Maybe someday SMG will grace the screen once again as the sexy slayer but until then, this is of the good.
And Spike is a worm who was NEVER worthy of Buffy.
Somebody mentioned the actors are too old to reprise their role....well, not all of them. Actually, I can only think of one who fits that bill.

Leigh Walton Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 03:06 PM EST

That is indeed by Jo Chen -- her signature is in the bottom right corner. Chen will be doing covers, Jeanty interiors. It'd be nice if you could correct the blog entry.

taraswizard Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 02:54 PM EST

The cover reproduction! OMG! Thud (head hitting keyboard).

Joss made me get into comic books after a nearly 40 yr. hiatus, because of Fray. And now new BtVS comics that continue the story after "Chosen", that would put anyone's fanboy (or fangirl's) circuits on overload. Are there street dates on these comics?

ben Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 01:57 PM EST

YEAH BUFFY WASN'T CANCELLED!!! WHO'D CANCEL A SHOW ADORED BY THOUSANDS... EVEN MILLIONS!!!

Brandon Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 11:57 AM EST

Just a couple nitpicks. Buffy wasn't born in comic books, She was created by Joss Whedon in the early 90's for a movie which was horrific). The Series actually started in 1997 (A year before the comic you linked to was released) and it wasn't cancelled, It ended because Joss and SMG were ready for it to end.

patrick Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 11:32 AM EST

am i the only one that knows that btvs wasn't cancelled? joss said that he couldn't handle doing any more because he was so busy as it is, plus sarah michelle gellar wanted to leave to save her movie career

ben Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 11:06 AM EST

Well the first installment is supposed to be out sometime in october. However a source at Dark Horse said it won't be ready till february '07

Erin Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 11:01 AM EST

When is this coming out? I've never read a comic in my life but I loved the series and collect the action figures. Now I'm gonna have to start my comic collection!

Hunter Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 10:01 AM EST

So what is the street date for this? Dark Horse comics is located just a few minutes away from me. I've been thinking about starting a new comic book collection and this is what may make me get back into it. I haven't read one in over 10 years.
When can I buy it?

Prena Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 12:34 AM EST

"Maybe, you should stop mentioning Spike and get over it.There are people who don't give a crap about him either."

No, really? *gasp* I said he was popular, not universally adored. Don't put words in my mouth. And I keep mentioning him, because you keep responding to my messages. Where do you get off acting all indignant because I deign to reply your messages? Ooh, I dared to mention that I wish Spike was in the comic... apparently to you that means, "Must. continually. remind Spike fan. not. going to. happen. Because if I can't have my barfy TWUWUV4EVA B/A reunion, I better make it clear that S/B's not going to happen either. Neener, neener." So you calling me childish? Pot calling the kettle black much? I mean really, any day now you can stop telling me over and over again that Spike won't be in it. I GET IT!!! That doesn't mean I have to like it. So do me a favor and quit getting on my case. Sheesh.

"Nor did he improve Angel's ratings enough to save it from cancelation. The ratings in season 5 matched season 3 which were dramatically lower from season 1 and 2."

Spike's not Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp, there's only so much ratings he could pull in. But he did deliver results. The reason they cancelled the show wasn't because of low ratings, they wanted to make space for newer "fresher" programs. And a fat load of good it did them. They made a mistake, and they ended up paying for it. Doesn't change the fact that he still saved the show from cancellation the first time around and that in general unlike the titular characters on both shows, his bony ass tends to get things sold out NOWADAYS - so really there's no point dredging up the ridiculously irrelevant distant past. If he was in it, it would sell more because he has the most rabid fanbase willing to spend moola on any little thing that he's in. Deny it all you want but that is as good as fact.

nikki Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 12:27 AM EST

So for someone that loved Buffy but is oblivious to the written work..does this comic start where the series ended or is there a book between the series finale and the comic book beginning? And is there a comic book that let's you know what happened at the end of Angel?

Lisa Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:50 PM EST

Being a proud black man, when I saw the photo I screamed like a litte girl but also, as a proud nerd, I printed out the photo and raced to the nearest bathroom :) THANK YOU, Joss Whedon!

well that kinda grossed me out but ok. Anyone interested in buying all 7 seasons of buffy? if so Email Coffman45@aol.com

Roy Yu Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 08:49 PM EST

Joss Whedon and Jo Chen together on Buffy!!! Grins from ear to ear. Anybody know who the penciler is?

Khrystyan Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 07:32 PM EST

I'm with Laurene, I hope to god there is some Faith. Thanks to Joss for making this a go, I can't wait for it to come out.

Chris Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:41 PM EST

Yep,IDW has put out a lot of stuff already with more on the way. There is a 5 issue mini-series called Spike:Asylum starting in September. An Angel Halloween special scheduled for October.A Angel/Spike 5 issue mini-series set to hit sometime in the fall.Plus a Doyle one-shot later this month and a Connor one-shot next month. There is also the Angel scriptbook series. Each issue features the script for various episodes of Angel with original artwork depicting scenes from the episode. The first four issues have already come out.

Lobster Head Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:22 PM EST

D'oh! I meant Angel and Spike! With these two, since their rights are heald by one publisher there have already been a number of comics involving both, which I expect will continue on.

Chris Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:10 PM EST

I think you mean, the the legal publishing rights to Angel are at IDW while, the legal publishing rights to Buffy are at Dark Horse. The rest is on the button.

Can't wait to see these Buffy comics.IDW has done a nice job with there end of the Whedonverse as well.

Lobster Head Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 04:56 PM EST

From what I have heard previously regarding this, the series will incorporate any info from Angel season 5 about what Buffy was up to, post season 7.

And, as others have stated, the legal publishing rights to Angel and Buffy currently reside with IDW, so there will be no crossovers. IDW has been doing a number of series following both Angel and Spike, however, so if you're interested in one of those two, track down the comics. They don't have the direct involvement from Whedon that the Buffy series does, though.

Beth Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 04:54 PM EST

I for one cant wait for this to be out. I am a buffy fanatic and own all the books...all the comics...all the dvds...posters...autographed pics...everything...

this really looks to be an extension of the "queen of the slayers" book that was released last year that was based the second the series ended. i cant wait to see where this is going and see the gang continue on since the odds are i will never see them on TV again. the scooby gang was really in their prime when they went out (except when they brought on dawn and killed tara..that wasnt so prime). i just really hope this doesnt become like the series did in the last season where everyone was anti-kennedy and anti potential and (now not potential but slayers themselves) all spike this and spike that...hopefully with the seperation between ign and dark horse we wont be subjected to another round of any of that.

Davidous Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 04:11 PM EST

OMG, my prayers 've been LISTENED!!

David Amulet Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 03:54 PM EST

I wonder how much--if any--of the "Angel" TV developments post-Buffy the new comics will incorporate. Dare I hope not all of it?

p. Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 03:47 PM EST

i loved spike as a character and i'm really sad that he wont be on the comics, but come on buffy and spike sucked together. they never had buffy and angels chemistry. buffy and angel will always be the it couple of buffyverse. even tho i started to love spike more than angel towards the end, that whole spuffy thing wasnt real. even spike knew it(i love you-no you dont)-get over it.

Jessica Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 03:42 PM EST

I'm a proud chinese female and I can't wait for this.

john Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 03:21 PM EST

No need to worry about Montana Judas,...he or she seems to have outed their possible taste quotient by saying "Anything with Paul Reubens and Luke Perry is box-office gold in my opinion." While Paul Reubens may indeed be enjoyable and groundbreaking, Luke Perry is relegated to bad TV hell. Everyone has an opinion, it is just a shame that this person must foist there's on fans of a particular show in such a rude and inconsiderate way. Instead, Montana,...go to a Luke Perry fan blog and post there,...oh,..sorry,...didn't realize the idiocy of suggesting that.

Travis Tidmore Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 02:52 PM EST

I can't Wait. We all know theres no other way we'll ever get a new Buffy story in a visual format, because all the actor's have aged to much, sure you could have them do a reunion type show and show what they're doing years later, but Angel & Spike wouldn't be a part anways because Boreanz and Marsters are too much older to keep playing characters who don't age.
So praise Whedon for coming back to do Buffy Season 8!!! I can't wait!

Wade Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 02:25 PM EST

To the Spike bashers out there.....Spike gave the show
balance....plain and simple....He was the bad to offset
the good and he didn't go by the book, which in a lot
of cases is exactly what you have to do for real. He saw
through facades everybody made for themselves. If anybody
on the show was the most human it was him. He was the
real deal...he wasn't fake. He just told it the way it was
and if you didn't like it that was your problem.

Chris Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 01:36 PM EST

Maybe, you should stop mentioning Spike and get over it.There are people who don't give a crap about him either. You're acting like a little child stomping your foot because you're not getting your way.You know when this situation prevents Buffy and Angel from interacting and prevents anything B/A,certain section of fandom loves it and gloats about no crossovers. It happened when the shows ended up on different networks and it happened again when IDW got the rights to Angel. But the minute the same circumstances now prevent any Buffy and Spike interaction and spuffy it becomes whine, whine, whine, and cry,cry ,cry.

Spike will not be involved and neither will Angel so no spuffy and no bangel. The Angel centric characters are off limits to Dark Horse just as the Buffy centric characters are off limits to IDW.That's been confirmed by people at both IDW and Dark Horse. If you don't like it,then don't read the books.Spike and Spuffy is not the be all and end all of the Buffyverse.Neither is Angel and Bangel.Joss,I'm starting to think has the right idea in not wanting to deal with either one,in these comics.

As for Spike being the biggest money maker, well I don't deny he makes money but I will say that the highest rated seasons of Buffy and Angel certainly weren't the years Spike and spuffy were front and center.Nor did he improve Angel's ratings enough to save it from cancelation. The ratings in season 5 matched season 3 which were dramatically lower from season 1 and 2.

All Spike brought to Angel was a small blip for the first couple of episodes before going back to what they were before. All that Spike pimping did not do much. There is a reason nobody wanted to pay for a Spike movie.

Jing Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 01:33 PM EST

Wow, that Artwork is great.
Does anyone know where i can get Wallpapers with Buffy Artwork like this?

Laurene Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 01:19 PM EST

okay i love the show. thats foremost important to say. SMG was the first actress i ever looked up on my computer for name and all that other stuff. Comics?? i never been too interested in 'em but c'on its Buffy so i'm will to adventure out and check it ouy.
One thing i dying to see tho is Faith will have an apperence. i love her. yes a lil more than Buffy cus we share similiarties. but anyway, i knoe this wont happen but i'll say it anyway(you never know) i hope Xander and Faith get together. that felt good to say.
okay too much writing. *smiles( Buffy rocks. first show i ever loved and screamed every time it came on even the re-runs.(the musical yea.)
Comic... i will def. invest time in getting and reading Love you Joss W.

The Other Kyle Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 01:02 PM EST

So she's wearing a t-shirt....of her self......

And are they not allowed to use the likeness of Gellar? Because that painting doesn't really look at all like SMG in the face department.

Bub Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:49 PM EST

Montana Judas, it's quite pathetic to come on and write such inane drivel. Coming on here and blasting one of the best, most intelligent shows of the last ten years only does one thing. It showcases your lack of quality material. If you don't like Buffy, then great, but use your time to write about something you do like. Strangers With Candy is funny, but it's not great art. Buffy is. Get a life.

HUH Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:48 PM EST

Montana Judas Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:37 PM EST

All you people need to get a life. Buffy is probably one of the worst TV shows/comic books ever. The movie with Christie Swanson and Luke Perry is another story. Anything with Paul Reubens and Luke Perry is box-office gold in my opinion. The TV show was fun to watch for the simple fact that the acting sucked, the story lines sucked even worse, and thirdly, the over acting was something to witness. You people should be more thrilled over the Strangers With Candy complete series DVD/Strangers With Candy Movie than this pile of horse manure.

ben Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:17 PM EST

i just bought the fray TPB and it is great. i do believe that the back story of a 21st century slayer in an apocalyptic battle causing to rid demons and stop the slayer line could be the finale to this series 8

javierman Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:03 PM EST

Cover Is by Runaways cover artist Jo Chen guys

Prena Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:36 AM EST

Stop mentioning Angel, Chris. I don't give a crap about him. :P Yes, maybe the comics will sell fine without Spike. But you must be living under a rock if you haven't figured out Spike's the biggest money maker the Buffyverse has. Do your research. Check out old Q numbers for both BTVS and ATS, Spike was always the fan favorite. And if keeping Spike away from Buffy is more important to Joss than selling product, well that's just mind boggling. Funny how he didn't have a problem pimping him out while the shows were still on, wether it was by gratuitously having Spike traipse around naked every other week on BTVS or putting Spike on ATS as a last ditch effort for ratings when the show was thisclose to cancellation. Hmm, what gives Joss? This horny fangirl is not amused. *g*

Clark Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:07 AM EST

Much as I love Buffy...I would rather see more Fray. I think her Fray-verse is much more interesting, and lends itself to the medium much better than modern day Sunnydale (or what's left of it)

Rebecca Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 10:48 AM EST

i absolutely love buffy but i wish spike was in the comic bc i know so many loved him and as a straight woman, i feel we need a hot guy in the comic at least. why not spike? he and buffy were so great together. love/hate =)

Lawly Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 10:02 AM EST

I'm a little ambivalent about it. Part of me wants to see Buffy in action again while other the other screaming that it isn't *really* Buffy, Joss Whedon or not.

I am glad that there won't be any Angel or Spike involvement, though. They tried using the triangle to sell AtS S5 and it sucked because of it. Plus, it would take a major character violation for either ship to hook back up, IMO.

So, let's see what you've got, Joss.

Adam Hardy Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:57 AM EST

Wow! That picture looks like Jeanty spent an awfully long time trying to get the face to really look like Gellar. She's a little bit comic-book-perfect, but aside from that? Stellar. I hope the rest of the visuals are as nice.

Chris Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:54 AM EST

As much as I loved Buffy, I thought the series Angel ended much stronger. And I would rather see a continuation of that story in comic book form. Hopefully if this Buffy comic is successful then Joss will turn his attentions to Angel.

DENi Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:53 AM EST

So when exactly is this comic going to be released for purchase? I checked out all those sites the above people posted and I cannot find any pre-order form for it. Where and when will it exist???

Matt Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:46 AM EST

Here's what happened at the end of Angel:
Andrew arrives with a small army of slayers to assist the Angel crew as they face imminent death. Unfortunately, Buffy did not participate but did give the orders to Andrew to assist Angel once she learned Angel's true motive for joining the Wolf, Ram, and Hart--that is, to show them that they don't have all the power in the universe. As long as there are champions amongst us, Wolfram & Hart will never have absolute power. Sadly to say, Gunn was sired during the battle and is now an undead enemy of the Angel crew. Interestingly enough, our two ensouled vampires did indeed survive along with Illyria. Wes actually misread the Shanshu prophesy: it said that the "vampires with souls" will play a major role... and will shanshu... Both champions are too vital to the human race, as well as to the Powers that Be, to be destroyed. By the way, there is some basis for this idea... Sirk in the episode "Destiny" said that what Wes interpreted was just a "child's book report on the subject." Although both champions survived, they did go there separate ways to fight the good fight. Illyria, however, attempts to fight the good fight but is still hell-bent on being restored to her true place... being exalted as a god by her disciples. Anyways, this is what I envision happened at the end of Angel.
Any thoughts?? email at mparantha@yahoo.com or visit www.myspace.com/mparantha

Lisa Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:28 AM EST

Let me be honest. No Spike = I don't really care.

By the end of the series I had sort of wished that the scoobs would go over a cliff in that school bus.

Now, I do wish that Joss would show interest in a "Angel" comic with Spike and Angel.

But Buffy? Totally over her. Scoobs? Even more so.

Jesse Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 08:19 AM EST

"From comics she was born" ... huh?

Evan Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 06:53 AM EST

For an early look at Buffy by the series artist Georges Jeanty check out this quick sketch I got from the artist at the recent Heroes Convention in Charlotte.

http://chippedham.blogspot.com/2006/07/heroes-convention-2006-report.html

Georges said that he hadn't really started drawing the book yet, so this was one of his first sketches of the character.

d Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 06:48 AM EST

that cover looks awful

Ryan Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:02 AM EST

I really hope they mention or touch on some things that happened in season 6 of "Angel" such as there new distrust in Angel after he took over Wolfram & Hart, and the fate of Cordelia.

TaraLivesOn Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 03:30 AM EST

Woo AND Hoo !!!
I hope we get to see (lots of) Willow too...

"THANK YOU JOSS!!!"

john lopez Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 02:09 AM EST

oh yeah... HOOORAAAAYYY!!!!! whew... oh and i forgot about warren. also i hope it will give us some insight on who survived the onslaught at the end of angel. *sniff* i miss fred...

john lopez Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 02:01 AM EST

ok, im gonna admit that i wanted to scream like a little girl but ultimately i just sat upright. i love buffy and co. with passion. BUT i wonder if the storyline has any to do with the nancy holden paperback sequel where half the group goes to england and the other half go to cleveland. and please dont think angel and spike will have anything to do with this storyline because the only bridge between buffy and angel after buffy ended was andrew... sheesh. i hope we see another story bridge character like cordelia. you know no one else gets messed with more than she does...as for dawn, shes a born watcher and key. that might mean her training as ripper jr. might be a disconcerting. what about the old enemy you say? between the master, angelus, the mayor, adam, glory, dark willow, spike (hey he started off as an enemy!) and the first... i wanna say glory but its probably a wild card. talk it back scoobies!

Jasper Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:35 PM EST

Being a proud white man, I jumped for joy; then as a proud gayboy, I clicked my heels! Joss, you're the man!

Seraph Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:12 PM EST

Here's a thought: Now that it's it comic book form, does this mean we'll actually get to see the things Joss wanted to do, i.e. bring Tara back, since actor schedules won't affect it?

Chris Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:07 PM EST

I'm sorry, but it's just not going to happen.I would love an Angel mention and a reunion between Buffy and Angel but that's just not in the cards at this stage. The characters are divided at two companies and that's just the way things are going to be.If you want Spike, there are plenty of comics IDW is publishing using him.

This comic is about Buffy, and at this stage neither Angel nor Spike are a part of her story now. From what I heard,it was Joss himself who wanted the Buffy comics at Dark Horse and the Angel and Spike comics at IDW with a firm seperation between them and no crossovers. At present Dark Horse doesn't want any crossovers and interference in Joss's story.I suspect that this is at Joss's request which means then it's him who wants no involvment or mention of Angel and Spike.

Sucks,I know but since The Buffyverse is his baby, then it's his decision.

Maybe after the Buffy season 8 comics there might be some crossovers but we're are talking about atleast two years if not more since this season 8 series is going to run some 20 issues total.

I think these Buffy comics will sell just fine without Spike and/or Angel.

Kenny Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:03 PM EST

That cover is actually by Jo Chen, not the series' artist Jeanty.

Prena Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 08:12 PM EST

I know. But he should. Let's face it, the last couple years of the show, most females tuned in for Spike. Without our lust object of choice, what's in it for the ladies? No fair that I won't get to see his lovely face, preferably wearing eyeliner to bring out his blue blue eyes, and guh, the black nail polish. Sexy accent, bad boy 'tude. It does not get any cooler than him. *dreamy sigh* He added so much spark to the show. Buffy without Spike there to mess up her pretty new life and screw with her head like he always did, it's just going to feel off. Like something's missing. I'm sorry for the simultaneous shameless gushing and whining, but that is the truth of the matter. LOL.

Chris Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 07:27 PM EST

Spike along with Angel are owned by IDW comics. They will get no mentions.

Prena Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 07:01 PM EST

Spike should get a mention. The comic will make more money that way. Plus, damn it, I miss him and Buffy snarking at each other. They were pretty together. And hot!!!

Just Me Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 07:00 PM EST

Oh goody! Just what we need. First there was the show on television, and now children can get more demonic activity by reading a Buffy comic book. I am glad Kirk Cameron is still around. Christopher's comment sounded vicious and truly unkind. If you are wishing Kirk death, I figure you have had too much Buffy.

Celeste Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 06:45 PM EST

http://comicsinfinity.com/ is a really good place to get comic subscriptions.

I am super excited about this and can't wait to see what Joss and the crew come up with.

p. Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 06:32 PM EST

yay i'm so happy, i miss buffy like a pain in my heart. i hope angel wll be in it too so that they can finally get to be together, otherwise i'm gona be seriously pissed off.

Faith Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

thank goddess! i can't wait to see what he does with dawn, talk about an undeveloped storyline...part slayer, full key!

Jessica Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:32 PM EST

I miss Buffy,Im so glad its coming out in comic books. The comic book store down town where I live better have it when it comes out. I love the picture, looks amazing!

Jaina Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:57 PM EST

absolutely stunning.

Crystal Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

God that makes me miss Buffy. Apart from that, that's a darned good piece of art.

Christopher Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 02:31 PM EST

Hey Diana,
The preorder isn't through Dark horse, but another company, called Thing From Another World. You can't currently pre-order Buffy because Dark Horse hasn't announced it and allowed TFAW to pre-sell it yet.

Once they do, TFAW will ship the item for you, preventing you from ever having to step into the geeky, eeky hall of doom that is your average comic shop. ;D

TFAW also does subscriptions, so you might be able to get a better rate on buying a whole year-- not really sure, as I personally troll my way into the halls of doom!

Geno Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:50 PM EST

Comic-Books can be very well done these days. If you're a "BuffY" fan and are interested in the book, don't be afraid to give other books a chance. "Y-The Last Man", "Ex-Machina", "Ultimates" and "Fables" are just a handful of comic books that are well-written and great to read!

Augie De Blieck Jr. Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:45 PM EST

Dark Horse doesn't do subscriptions through the mail. You're going to have to reserve at your local comic shop, or through one of the mail order services, such as Khepri.com or DCBservice.com

Or, yeah, wait for Amazon or a book store to list it.

Or haunt the comic stands at Borders and Waldenbooks in the hopes they get it.

Or just go to your local comic shop. Find one here: 1-800-COMIC-BOOK

Richard Howe Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:44 PM EST

I'm pretty sure that that cover is actually by Jo Chen, who has been announced as the cover artist. Georges Jeanty is doing interiors, and his work doesn't really resemble that. (It is good, though.)

Alex Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:36 PM EST

The animated series died in the pre-production phase. I heard they couldn't find a distributor or a studio to produce it.

ben Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:27 PM EST

when did they state that the TPB would be released in a year. i prefer TPB but cannot wait that long. ill probably get the series and then the TBP later

Diana Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:08 PM EST

Does anyone know where specifically to go for preorders? I used the link that Christopher provided above but I can't find where to go.

Thanks!

Jakeem Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 12:07 PM EST

So whatever happened to the proposed "Buffy" animated TV series featuring the voices of cast members from the prime-time show?

Kimmie G Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 10:36 AM EST

Thanks so much, Christopher! I've bookmarked the site, and will be awaiting the pre-order availability!

fan Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 10:26 AM EST

I love you, PopWatch. I love that you're tracking the Buffy comic's progress. Keep us posted, please! I can't wait for it! (since it has to do with Dawn, I'm guessing Glory's making some sort of comeback, and Dawn's Key-ness is an issue again. You heard it here first. :-)

scout Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 10:25 AM EST

I am so excited. My inner fangirl is going nuts right now. I have been waiting for this forever. I'm not familiar with any of Georges Jeanty's other work, but that cover looks amazing. Since he was Whedon's first choice for the project, I should have expected nothing less. After all, Whedon also insisted on Cassaday for Astonishing X-Men, so he obviously has impeccable taste.

Miles Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 10:06 AM EST

At 26, some would say I am too old for comic books, but this is the first set of comic books I will buy since I was 17, I can't WAIT!

johnathan Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 10:01 AM EST

I shouldn't be so sensitive about this, but Buffy wasn't really "cancelled." That puts the show on the same level as any old show that lasted a couple months. It was really retired by Joss Whedon and especially SMG, who wanted to move on to film roles.

Christopher Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:58 AM EST

Kimmie, Dark Horse offers preorders. Go here:
http://www.darkhorse.com/index.php

If you want that 'waiting breathlessly for Tuesday night' feeling again, preorder the issues; if you would prefer to go highbrow, wait for the trade paperback (TPB) to be released in a year. Either way, they'll come to your mailbox.

Cici Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:41 AM EST

Can Angel get in this comic too then I can finally have the romantic reunion that I was always dreamed about for years.

D Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:22 AM EST

Dude that looks like Mischa Barton.

Kimmie G Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 09:17 AM EST

I have a ridiculous question. Is there a mail subscription to this, or do I need to venture into a comic-book shop to get them? Not ever having been a comic reader, I'm extremely naive, but the fact that this is my most-favorite TV heroine ever, Buffy, I'm willing to expose my ignorance to find out how I can keep up with the Slayer. Please advise!
