Tarantino, Rodriguez announce the 'Grind House' cast

14587__rose_l_1 Grind House, the in-production Rodriguez-Tarantino genre twofer, is an excellent excuse to use the word "diptych." It's also an excellent reason to discuss the relative merits of Mickey Rourke vs. Kurt Russell. The former was set to play a killer named Stuntman Mike in Quentin's half of the carnage, the brilliantly titled slasher flick Death Proof; for as-yet-unconfirmed reasons (the rumor mill says he just didn't show up for work), Rourke has now been replaced by John Carpenter muse Kurt Russell. This will undoubtedly prompt many a geek debate over who would win in a no-holds-barred, grind house-type fight: Kurt Russell or Mickey Rourke? The answer is Rourke. But the real loser, I suspect, would be Dignity.

And as for Rodriguez's half, Planet Terror, I'm having trouble deciphering what it's all about. Something zombie-ish and sci-fi-eriffic. Something with Rose McGowan as an amputee with a machine gun for a leg. (This was included in the footage shown at Comic-Con, which sent the geek masses into shuddering waves of happiness.) A machine gun for a leg: I've always liked the idea, which I believe was pioneered by Genndy Tartakovsky in Samurai Jack. (Though it's clearly caught on.) Something about the simple, practical austerity of it appeals to the Shaker in me.

As for the other confirmed castmembers, we'll be seeing turns from nerd-beloved hunks both old (Michael Biehn) and new (Naveen Andrews). Rosario Dawson and Josh Brolin will also show up -- along with Danny Trejo, of course. What would a Rodriguez venture be without Danny Trejo?

Golly, look at these character names: Redhead Babe. Dr. Block. And my personal favorite, Zombie Coach. Put me in, Zombie Coach! I am officially seduced by your pulpy goodness. Diptych me without mercy.

About 2 seconds after I made my post, I knew somebody would bring up Four Rooms, lol. But actually, I even liked that flick, not as much as other stuff they've done, but it was still fun.

According to Ned: "Tarantino and Rodriguez together, it can't go wrong"

Did you see "Four Rooms?"

I'm a huge fan of both, but they can screw it up. Mind you, I don't think they weill. But it's possible.

Rose McGowan is the horror exploitation queen! Doom Generation, then she dates Marylin Manson, then goes on that show about witches and does the busty blonde gig in Scream? Too tasty!

And yeah, a Rodriguez flick without Trejo would be unwatchable. Will they be making machine gun for a leg action figures for this movie? Because I totally want one

I like both of these directors, but their schtick is getting tired. This sounds like SIN CITY 2. There's only a certain amount of gratuitous violence and vomit-inducing images I can stand.

Can't either of these guys make a movie which doesn't feature any people losing their limbs?

If some of you people might have remembered there was already a take in the "fake leg / machine gun " trick used in the Sam Raimi cult flick DARKMAN. Where one of Durant's (Larry Drake) henchmen had a machine gun disguised as a prosthetic leg.

Seriously though, I'm a huge fan of Tarantino and I like some of the stuff Rodriguez does (though sometimes it looks like an actual 12-year old is at the helm.)

As cool as this movie looks, i'm going to echo a sentiment Owen Gleiberman made when he said he was disappointed that QT wasn't making a proposed Jimi Hendrix biopic. I wish Tarantino would move on from junky trash like this (and I LOVED the Kill Bills) and direct something a little more grown up (same goes double for Rodriguez). I would also suggest they direct something they didn't write to change things up (this last sentence goes TRIPLE for M. Night Shyamalan!)

All these guys are technically, VERY talented directors and, by maybe bringing their distinct style to other projects, can make an otherwise conventional project 10 times more interesting.

In my opinion, this has worked very well for someone like Spike Lee recently (The 25th Hour, Inside Man.)

Hmm...wonder what happened to Rose's right hand in that picture? If it's injured, she should have it amputated and replaced with a swiss army knife or something.

I'm tired of Rodriguez always having to direct / work with Tarentino to get some cred or financing...he ain't all that...he only had one hit film...Pulp Fiction..and his style if all playd out.

Robert needs to do his own thing...

Zombie Coach! I can tell already, I'm gonna love this movie. Tarantino doesn't put out many movies, but when he does, he always seems to surprise and innovate. I hear that there will be trailers for fake movies in the intermission of Grind House, I hope this is true!!

Wow, an EW writer went a whole paragraph before insulting the Comic-Con "geeks." Must be a record.

Ned Tue, Jul 25, 2006 at 10:09 AM EST

This sounds awesome, Tarantino and Rodriguez together, it can't go wrong. And Rose McGowan is so hot, I'm sure she can even make a machine gun leg look good.

EO Tue, Jul 25, 2006 at 09:36 AM EST

Why do I not care about this movie?

brandonk Tue, Jul 25, 2006 at 09:33 AM EST

What good is having a machine gun for a leg? You can't fire it unless you're laying down, right?
