Snap Judgment: An open letter to Janet Jackson

Jul 27, 2006, 05:41 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

161139__janet_lDear Janet Jackson,

Hey there, Janet. Let's talk. Over burgers. Yeah, remember those? I know you do. Actually, we can get crazy and order fries, too. I know carbs are the enemy, but I believe in keeping 'em close, if you know what I mean. Fine, fine, you don't have to order 'em, but don't spend the whole meal picking at mine, okay? And don't even think about discarding the bun. I hate it when you do that.

Anyway, look, let's get serious. You ignored my advice about your blah new duet with Nelly, and went with it as your first single, but I'm not here to chastise you. What's the title again? ''Call on Me''? Sorry, I can't ever seem to remember it, and I couldn't find it on Billboard's top 20, and... no, I didn't mean that as a dis.

Well, even if I did, let's put it behind us and discuss the video, the one that's streaming at AOL and YouTube. Now I'm saying this out of a place of love, Janet, and you know I mean it because I've been digging you since back when you were jammin' to that nasty groove with Paula Abdul in the Control days, and... heh, yeah, I did see that clip of her on QVC.

But damn it, Janet, focus! What's up with the video? Was there a sale down at Jo-Ann Fabric? You spend the whole clip swimming in a sea of silk and taffeta, and I'm not getting it. Not getting the pirate ship. Not getting Nadia Turner's 'frohawk from season 4 of Idol. Not getting the way you're grinding unconvincingly against Nelly's bare torso. Not getting you running through the hedges like Gwen Stefani in ''What You Waiting For?" Worst of all, you look tired, hungry, and like you're not having any fun at all. I know you can do better on your next video. Or if you're not into it, don't even make another one. You've had a great career; you've got plenty of money. You can relax if you want to. Relax and have a burger. And fries. We'll all still love you.

Love,

Michael Slezak

Dear Ms. Jackson, i am writing this to you because i am going through a real tough time right now and the only keeping me from giving it all up is your cd's and songs. your music let's me know that your life is meant for something. I know you probably will never read this. But i just wanted to write you this. because you are a inspiration to me and my poetry wht keeps me from ending it too. Maybe if you read this you could right back and i could show you one of them. I know that i should hold my head up high and move on but i cant and i dont think i deserve to move on with my life. well i guess i've wasted enough of your time goodbye Ms. Jackson.

Attention All:
I would like to go on record by saying,"I like Janet's song and video (Call on Me)!!!" I found her video to be very artistic. I love the way Janet is pushing the envalope both visually and musically especially with all of the technology avaliable today! I also love her latest video "So Excited". I find this video to be a great way for her to make the best out off a bad situation in her own special way! The situation I am referring to is the Superbowl incident with Justin Timberlake. Lets be clear, I am not speakig badly of him. I like his music as well!! Now, I am not a huge Janet Jackson fan. Which means that I don't give great comments of praise easily to anyone. I tend to like all types of music and artists the same.
So, Janet where ever you are keep your head up and go girl!!! Also Janet, I love your nails in the "Call on Me" video? Where ever did you get them? I design nails, that's why I asked!
As for all of the fans who hate the video you are intitled to your openions. I find it necessary to leave you all with my own favorite quote: "An intellegent person would know better than to insult me and an ignorant person can't!" Please, try to remember that we are all human with human rights! Nobodies Perfect all of the time we can only pray that we can be close to perfect some of the time! May God bless you all in your endeavors trough life!
Sincerely,

Jarvita L. (T.) Parker

Nobody has to check the Billboard. The only reason it's # 1 is because of the grass roots campaign of camp Janet. Her tone deaf faithful fans have miraculously pushed that sorry ass song to #1. Janet and Jermaine Dupri have been begging her fans to buy this song and album. Janet looks so stupid pimping herself on the cover of all these magazines naked. Janet get a clue...that is so tired. She is desperate. And it's so obvious her career is over. This is her last album on Virgin records. THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! They are going to drop her with the quickness. But she'll end up on So So Def records. That's SO SO SAD!!!!!!!!!!!

Jennifer Mon, Sep 25, 2006 at 05:48 PM EST

Check the Billboard charts again. I believe it's #1 on the R&B charts. Not bad, seeing that we don't really buy singles on discs anymore. Janet will be fine.

anthonycamden7112msn.com Sat, Aug 12, 2006 at 10:10 PM EST

First of all all these dumb asses need to realize what the videois about. The video is like aesop fables childrens stories, janets a genie and nelly is a pirate. the video is beautiful, and the words are clear for the stupid ass wipe who couldn't hear them. As long as your not jumping around like some damn fool janet. I think your song is one the bestfor the summer and the video is the best for the summer, and please don't do a de ja vu video

tameka Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 01:44 PM EST

someone else brought up mariah vs. madonna you should read all the commets on this page then you will be able to see what i am talking about . but it is just like what i have said earlier every one on this page has a right to their opion that is what makes this world a beautiful place to live . mariah and janet both have been through hell . What happen to janet wasn't right either. you are right mario this about janet song and video and i would have kept it to that until i read some of the other comments on this page . by the way i love the song but i hate the video even though i am of fan of hers and mariah's i still going to be honest . just read some of the other comments before me mario look i am done with this issue have a great day

Mario Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 10:50 AM EST

Tameka,

Take a deep breath.. release, repeat. There's no need to get all angry (you are, we can tell from your post being in CAPS). It isn't worth it -- really.

If you type slowly and breathe while you're doing it you might catch all your spelling and punctuation errors. I am being snarky but not pissed off, there's a difference.

I wasn't being confrontational, I simply asked why you had to go on and on and on about Mariah and only mention Janet as a side note when it's a Janet thread to begin with. I never said you couldn't have an opinion, everyone has their own opinion and that's what makes life wonderful just don't expect everyone to agree with you.

on your first post: tameka | Jul 30, 2006 4:37:27 PM

you mention Janet twice .. on the first sentence "Janet can dance her ass off!" and on the last sentence, "that girl can dance". The rest of the entire post revolved around Mariah and how much better than Madonna she is. Ok, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it just anyone is entitled to their opinions but one has to wonder, how was that entire post relevant to Janet Jackson or Janet Jackson's new video for that matter?

My inquiries to you have not been WHY do you like Mariah over Madonna but rather, how is your liking of Mariah vs Madonna relevant to Janet Jackson's new music video?

Lastly, simply because I'm asking you this you automatically assume that I don't like Mariah Carey. You couldn't possibly be more wrong but hey, it's your opinion so you are entitled to it.

tameka Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 10:33 AM EST

MARIO, I HAVE THE RIGHT JUST LIKE YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE TO VOICE MY OPIOION OKAY. FOR YOUR INFORMATION MARIO HONEY I AM VERY SMART AND INTELLINGENT AND YOU SEEMED FOR SOME REASON TO BE VERY CONFRONTANAL WITH ME. I DON'T KNOW YOU AND YOU SURE AS HELL DON'T KNOW ME !!! I STATED HOW I FELT ABOUT JANET AND MARIAH. YOU SURE MUST BE A MADONNA FAN AND THAT IS FAN. IF YOU ATTACK ME THATN YOU HAVE TO ATTACK EVERYONE ON THIS PAGE WHO HAS AN OPIOION. I WASN'T THE ONE WHO BROUGHT THIS UP FIRST OTHER PEOPLE MADE COMMENTS ON MARIAH AND MADONNA AND I JUST ADDED MY OPIONIN. SO WHAT IF I AM NOT THE BEST AT GRAMMAR MOST PEOPLE AREN'T AND TO ME IT SHOWS HOW IGORNANT AND SNARKY YOU ARE TO GET PISSED OFF OVER A COMMENT THAT I HAVE MADE. NO IAM NOT ANGREY WITH YOU MARIO BECAUSE I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU AND YOU DON'T KNOW ME . I HAVE THE RIGHT TO MY OPIONION SOMEONE ELSE WENT ON AND ON ABOUT MADONNA BEING THE QUEEN OF POP AND MADONNA WAS NOT HE THE SUBJECT ON THIS PAGE . THEY ALSO BROUGHT UP MARIAH AND I HAD TO SPEAK BECAUSE I AM A BIG FAN OF HERS AND I WISH THEM BOTH LUCK . I JUST SPOKE THE TRUTH AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT TOO BAD .!!!!!!! YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO YOUR OPIOION AND SO DO I. SOME PEOPLE GO ON AND ON ABOUT MADONNA ON THIS PAGE I DON'T SEE YOU GETTTING PISSED OFF HOT AT THEM . I AM NOT INSECURE ABOUT MC SHE JUST HAD A BLOCKBUSTER YEAR BETTER THAN MOST PEOPLE . I ALSO CAN'T WAIT FOR CHRISTINA AQUILERA'S ABLUM SO YOU CAN KICK ASS ALONG WITH JANET JACKSON.

Mario Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 10:10 AM EST

Tameka,

Adding "darling" to just about every sentence (is it even a sentence if it lacks punctuation?) doesn't make you sound smart, only snarky and not even funny snarky but confrontational snarky and ignorant.

The problem as I see it, with most Mariah fans, "darling", is that they have to constantly bring her up in comparison to Madonna. If you wanted to say your piece about Janet and add a side remark about Mariah and/or Madonna that would have been fine but instead you focused your entire post on "Mariah" and only mention Janet as a side note. Why even mention Madonna in the same breath with Janet and Mariah if she's not even up to their caliber? Per your argument, wouldn't that make her irrelevant thus not worthy of mention? Instead, you go on and on and on about how Mariah is better, this, that and the other.. blah.. blah.. blah.

Are you really that insecure about Mariah that you have to hijack a thread that isn't about her at all just to voice your opinion about her?

Seriously, that's just plain sad...

tameka Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 09:41 AM EST

matter of fact mario if you look at the comments that was on this page a girl by the name of maria brought up madonna and mariah and i just give an opionin just like she did darling . plus there are more people out there that brought up madonna and mariah in the same breath i just spoke on it and now it time to just let it go darling but i just love great voices like marih whitney, christina, celion dion, aretha franklin, deborah cox, kelly price so i am i guess lambs 0f all of these divas MARIO DARLING OH THE CONCERT IS GREAT CAN'T WAIT TO SEE JANET NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tameka Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 09:34 AM EST

mario, it was necceary because someone else had brought up madonna and mariah on this page and i just gave my opinion just like any one else . i am not just a lamb i am a fan of people that can sing darling . i also gave an opionion on janet which i love to death too . and can't wait to see on tour just like mc !!!!!!!!!!!

Mario Mon, Jul 31, 2006 at 06:45 AM EST

tameka,

that was completely unnecessary as neither of those to artists.. (Madonna & Mariah) are being discussed on here.

We can tell you're a Mariah lamb... no doubt.

HOw's that concert coming along??

tameka Sun, Jul 30, 2006 at 03:37 PM EST

I love janet and she can dance her ass off literally !!!! now i want to address the whole madonna and mariah thing there is no comparison between the two of them . Madonna is successful and she puts on a great show. Mariah is a vocal phemnon who has this spectular voice and she ranks up there with whitney houston and celcine dion and aretha franklin. she has a muti octive vocal gift. she has a range called the dog whistle range no one in the music industry can sing words and notes in that dog whistle range like she does that is what makes her incredible and amazing to me. mtv not to long ago did a show called mtv's 22 greatest voices in music and mariah came in at number one and whitney came in at 3 christina came in at 5. so those 3 can defintey out sing madonna . Mariah to me can sing cirlces around madonna and madonna can dance cirlces around mariah they are 2 differnent types of artist is all i am saying. if you listen to some of mariah 's earlier albums no one has been able to do vocally what she has done . she is in a league of her own. plus mariah was awarded female artist of the milleuem which is incredble and she has more number 1 records than madonna . don't get it twisted madonna is great but i personally prefer mariah because i am a fan of people with great voices and i am a fan of janet jackson because that girl can dance and i personally enjoy watching her dance can't wait for her to go on tour soon.

Philip John Sun, Jul 30, 2006 at 03:10 PM EST

I think that the bestest summer video is Jewel's "GOOD DAY". Too bad she's not given much importance these days. I hope she'll become a whole new phenomenon again. All summer videos are tasteless eye candies except 'Good Day'. Although I like Christina very much but her video is seen before. And speaking of Janet, I think she's declining. 'Call on Me' is colorful but where's the money claimed to have spent on this video; so, so, so cheap and very outlandish. Just so you know, for the fun of it, I did join her 'Design Me' contest.

Ed Sat, Jul 29, 2006 at 07:33 PM EST

I lost interest in Janet when she did The Velvet Rope. Each album is supposed to cover new territory but she revisited the whole sex thing after her album Janet. Then she went overboard when she got those new titties. The Velvet Rope was hidieous with that album cover (the hair comes to mind) and then the look she sported for that video, Together Again.
She is too dependent on other people to create her sound. First is was Jimmy and Terry, which were good in the 80's; then she went with Rene Alonzo who took her career in another direction with VR. Now she's with Jermain and he sucks even more.

I believe Janet is over her career, she doesn't appear to interested in getting back to the top.

Just Me Sat, Jul 29, 2006 at 12:53 PM EST

Wow! Janet is looking more like her brother Michael more and more. She is a beautiful girl, but too much plastic surgery is showing on her. She needs to stop doing that.

Chris Sanders Sat, Jul 29, 2006 at 09:51 AM EST

In Janet's case event singles need to be an event. They need to be fast dance singles that remind everyone why you liked the artist to begin with.

Tauwan Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 08:10 PM EST

Dear Janet,

Peep Ciara's new single 'Get Up' from the Step Up sdtrk. What a hot single should sound like and what a good video should look like.

Anxiously anticipating round two,

A long time fan

P.S. I must admit, Call on Me is kinda of growing on me...slightly

James Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

I was just upset because now I know what happened to my grandmas' BROOCH! IT WAS A HEIRLOOM! OK, now that I got that off my chest..

Just like Mario stated, Janets' first album came out circa 1982 with YOUNG LOVE and GIVE YOUR LOVE TO ME..LOVED THEM! I saw her perform on American Bandstand when she was just an "ACTRESS"

I actually like the song "Call on me" and not because I'm a fan. Its one of those songs you put on after sweatin' at the club and you're on your way home. Its just smooth...

Now the lyrics SUCK and Janet has never been a strong singer. What she needs to do is DROP JJ and TL and STOP working with her boyfriends/husbands. You just lose focus because you "BOO" will tell you ANYTHING!

And she needs to tone down on all of the surgery..PAGING STAR JONES! Star reminds me of a drag queen doing Diana Ross..OLD AND TIRED!

Randomm Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 05:20 PM EST

Anyone ever heard of "Feelin' You" by 3LW? It's like an upgrad of the song and is 100x better than "Call on Me" which is pathetic.

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:57 PM EST

What is it with all this puritanism?? It's a freakin' nipple, people! Children have them too, you know... it's called nature. Granted, the stations should have never zoomed in on her nipple ring but it's not like it was nipple biting, tweaking, etc... it was just an exposed nipple.

Also, why was it that Justin.. who tore off the outfit from her breast, got off so easily but Janet is still being punished by you puritans?

A nipple is bad but having television ads for violent movies, television shows, etc.. are OK during saturday morning programming (when most children are watching) and before 10pm when children and teenagers are watching.

Seems like people have their priorities backwards.. if you're going to be such a hypocrite and censor a nipple, please also make sure you censor violence which is far worse and far more destructive than an exposed nipple.

keith e williams Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:51 PM EST

after seeing janet jackson in concert and loving every minute of each show, i truly have to see if i will spend my money to see her again. after the super bowl stunt which i think she had full knowledge of what was to happen , i would just like to turn on my tv and not hear about one of the jacksons exposing them self to children, let alone on national television.shame on you miss jackson.you must be as smart as your sister latoya, when i met her she did not even know how to spell my name, it is keith!!!

Julian Hills Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:24 PM EST

Hey, I agree with part of your leter to Janet. The single and the video don't bode well for a first single to re-launch a sagging career. But I hate how critics (those who can do... those who can't criticize those who can) try to label beloved artists washed up. As a Mariah Carey fan, she's proof that a comeback is always possible when the person is truly talented. Justin Timberlake and Beyonce have both made questionable choices. The power of written words have the ability to influence people, and these cynical-- non talented members of the media... should listen to a whole album before making judgements. Janet's problem is that she's a bit out of touch with what she should do. The truth is... people want to see her dancing with 100-gazillion dancers behind her-- much like the 80's and 90's. She can do that... if she makes a good album and goes back to basics... (sorry Christina) then she'll be fine.

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:20 PM EST

In all seriousness,

I love Ms. Jackson!! I certainly hope that "Call on Me" is just a fluke and that the album is much better than that crap. I had to scrub my brain after watching the video, that's how painful it was.

LMAO at the comment re: how her look in this video could out-drag drag queens in a dragstrip contest.

HA HA HA HA!

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:18 PM EST

did anyone read about Madonna's concert in Rome to 77,000 fans and how there are plans to get fans to sing "Crazy For You" during the break between Let It Will Be and Drowned World in unison to show her their love for her? Man, I wish I were there!

*grin* -- sowwy Phil!! Couldn't help it!

:-P

Phil Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:08 PM EST

I thought I mandated that we FEAST on Janet comments on this post & no more Madonna mentionings?! DOH! See, now I did it.

Anyways, look we can go back & forth on the comparisons to Janet and Madonna forEVER, since they've both been out relatively as long. But lets try and keep some semblence of rationale here and simply comment, critique, & caution Miss Jackson on her current fiasco, the "Call On Me" creature she has deemed her latest music video.

We're all adults here, let's stay on topic, please.

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 04:03 PM EST

Hey James!

Troy, yeah.. someone mentioned The Cell and Memoirs of a Geisha.. whatever the case, it's boring. :(

The thing is, everyone thinks that because we don't like the video we must be Janet haters. Heck, I grew up adoring Ms. Jackson (cuz I'm nasty!) along with Madonna, Cindy L, Jody Watley.. and quite honestly, Janet kept me interested up until The Velvet Rope.. after that, I kind of lost interest. All for you was good but I never bought it and never had any interest for Damita Jo.

I agree with you, James.. Ms. Jackson never ventured outside of her safe zone and always stuck with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. A bad move, in my opinion because eventually they would run out of fresh ideas (evident with Damita Jo & All for You, which sounded much like her earlier stuff).

My favorite Janet CDs are Control & Rhythm Nation 1814!!! Man, I still play those like crazy. :)

One thing that bothers me about this upcoming album "20 Years Old" is that her career didn't start in 1986, with Control.. her career started in 1982 with her self titled album. Artists should learn to embrace everything they've ever done, good or bad.

Janet, Honey... please get a different group of collaborators next time? Your voice unfortunately lacks range so you can't out-diva Mariah, Whitney, X-tina.. regardless of how much you try... you can't out-shock Madonna (nipplegate) because you're too much of a sweet girl.. you could, however go the dance club diva route because the gay community still embraces you as much as they continue to embrace Madonna.

RBlues Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 03:51 PM EST

O.K.--I'm 40 and back in the day, Janet was IT! I just watched this video and WTF! I'm embarrassed for her, that was just sad.

maria Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 03:51 PM EST

Ok, I have to say 1 thing for all those people that say that Mriah and janet are the real queen of pop:
first of all you are so ignorant, and arrogant here in the US just because Madonna is snubbed by radio and tv and in
spite of this she still sell records 1.5 millions copies are not so bad!
Second: go outside US and take a look at the charts!
Madonna rules!
Third : Confessions on a dancefloor has sold more than 8
million copies worldwide (more than Mariah).
And last but not less important:
Madonna will perfom in Rome next week in front of 70.000
people (sod out) in London for 6 date sold out in an hour in Japan(sold out) in Germany (sold out) and more and more..... Did Mariah or Janet are able to do it?
Madonna has 12 number one in UK, more than 12 in Italy,
she won every kind of award .
She spent 14 weeks at the top of the chart with Hung Up.
There's only one QUEEN OF POP , MADONNA!!
So please think before talking!
US is not the only country in the world!
Even if Madonna is snubbed there in the rest of the world she still rules!
And if ther is an artist that deserve the title of princess of pop that is Kylie Minogue !

Troy Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 03:24 PM EST

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but isn't this reminiscent of the movie "The Cell" with Jennifer Lopez?

James Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 03:17 PM EST

Sorry, I'm late! I knew you guys were on this post!!!
The problem with Janet is she has been working with the same producers for 20 YEARS! I know JD produced this, but can she find FRESH TALENT??? I mean, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis basically work with her. Who even employs those two anymore? Its like being an agent and having only one actor...STUPID!

Philip John Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 03:04 PM EST

I suppose all the videos for this year's summer songs have come out already and I must say that I'm pretty much disappointed. I personally like colorful, fresh, fun and unique videos such as 'A Thousand Miles'. This year's summer songs' accompanying videos are nothing but tasteless eye candies. First there's 'Ain't No Other Man', which, if I'm not mistaken Mr. Sleazak find OK and hardly any fault. I agree but not really,.....will continue this

Phil Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 02:47 PM EST

I'm doin good Mario, hope you had an excellent week! Philly is a lil' wet & VERY FREAKIN HOT this weekend...but other than that we're doing good! Philly is fun to visit, but after you've lived here a bit, it wears out its welcome!

Anyways, I love Janet as much as Madonna, hell I GREW up on both of them my entire life, but seriously I can't say how sadly disappointed I am with this "Call On Me" video. Shhhhheeesh I actually met JD last week. One week ago! I wish I had seen this one week ago, I'd have def. been like DUDE WHATCHU THINKIN!? So so so so so so very tragic. Zero Chemistry goin on, and the hit factor ain't much higher. I guarantee all of you, Virgin will be releasing a 2nd single at the end of August to co-incide with the Mtv Video Music Awards, esp. since Sony released beyonce's "Deja Vu" this past Tues on iTunes, since she was stallin on airplay alone, but she will CATAPULT into the top 10, and will surely knock Janet out of the Top 25. Ya heard it here 1st.....

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 02:32 PM EST

phil... you kill me! :)

how you be? My best friend is looking to move to Philly, I might move with him if he gets a big enough place to have a roomate. :)

If not, I'll have a place to crash on a regular basis while in Philly.

Phil Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 02:16 PM EST

I understand the reason people get catty and bitter on these blogs is because they feel so strongly about their opinions, but clearly the over-all consensus on this topic of Janet's new song & video seems to be pretty cut & dry. I'd say 1 out of every 10 bloggers seems to think that the song is actually good and will be a hit, whereas everyone else thinks its just plain crappy.

And enough about comparing Janet to Madonna's current work. Yes, there are Madonna fans here, but we discussed HER to no end LAST week, lets just tear Janet apart one delicious bone at a time, UmmKay? Its not like there's much meat left on there for us ALL to pick at!

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 01:17 PM EST

What I don't understand is why there are these fans saying that she made a "top 20 list" when her song has yet to get past No. 25. When did 25 become 20???

LMAO!

Pauli Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 12:56 PM EST

"Ummm, What Planet are some of you Living on?! Call On Me Featuring Nelly is a Very Good Song..Janet IS Back and a Top Twenty Single Is Proof of that, and it will only rise on the charts, TRUST THAT!..and to all the haters, especially the obvious Ones, Madonna is no longer a presence on the charts..sure, she sells out arenas but so does bruce springsteen and phish and JANET!!"

Um, I hate to break it to you, but Madonna's Hung Up made it to #7 on the Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 2 weeks. In fact, it debuted on the Hot 100 chart at #21 in its 1st week based solely on strong download sales. I don't see this Janet song reaching the top 10 on the Hot 100 and we all know for a fact that Call On Me didn't debut anywhere near #21 so Madonna once again has her beat.

Mario Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 12:56 PM EST

lala --

Fact: When a person decides to become a musical/theatrical/TV personality they become a public persona, thus they are fair game when it comes to criticism by ALL -- be they fans or non fans. Michael Slezak has a right to criticize Janet because that is his job, plain and simple. This is HIS blog, not some random blog where Janet was brought up. This is an ENTERTAINMENT blog, Janet is an entertainer thus it is relevant that he discusses her latest song/video. If YOU don't like what he has to say about it, then it is YOU who doesn't have to visit this site, plain and simple.

You know, name calling people doesn't make you sound intelligent, it only makes you sound ignorant and racist. I would suggest you refrain from doing that unless of course, you ARE ignorant and racist.

Lastly, re-reading your comments before posting them or previewing the post before finally posting would help eliminate a lot of your spelling errors.

Life is waaaay too short to get upset enough to defend someone who doesn't know who YOU are and probably couldn't care less either.

Karla Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 12:54 PM EST

I think everyone needs a snack of fake wax fingernails.

And a nap. Just put on the new Janet video and lull yourself into a pretty land of fairy tales. With some faux-threatening sexuality. And drag queens!!

Joho Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 11:56 AM EST

I hope the rest of the album sounds like Control.

TuMadre Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 11:43 AM EST

First... LMAO at the comment about Janet and/or Mariah being the Queen of Pop!! HA HA HA HA ... that's the dumbest comment I've read on here. Everyone knows radio in the US is crap... Madonna is an international star, not just some boring state side only star. Her singles this album have all gone to No.1 and her COAD cd debuted at No. 1 in 29 countries. A record for female artists but she's not the Queen of Pop.. riiiight!

Why did Mariah have to cancel dates on her new tour?? because no one wants to go hear her "sing" live... tickets are relatively cheap and she's having to cancel dates because of low or no sales. HA HA HA!

read it below and weep, haters:

Billboard Boxscore has just posted the final statistics for Madonna's North American leg of her Confessions Tour: (Venue / Gross / Attendance / Shows)

The tour has grossed an astonishing $85,842,663 from North America alone.
The North American leg of the tour is now over. Now Madonna's sensational tour shall soon be conquering Europe and Japan.

Not ONE single cancellion, NOT A SINGLE ONE!

MADONNA = UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF POP -- and not just the US but INTERNATIONALLY!

U all cant be serious. janet is dead as a door-knob

gio Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 11:15 AM EST

I get the feeling that most of you have yet to BLAST this song and just get into the groove..you are all judging way to harshly. I know we have extremely High Expectations but Sheesh Janet is Gonna deliver and if you guys were fans than you would know that by now and just sit back enjoy, request, support and allow yourselves to be surprised..and remember, defend her throne against some of the lunatic Mandonna 80's fans.

Kevin Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 11:03 AM EST

I really like Janet, too. A lot. When I heard that the new album, "20 Years Old," was going to be a tribute of sorts to "Control," I was super excited. "Call on Me" sounds nothing like any of the songs from "Control," it doesn't even seem to be inspired from that album. And don't even get me started on the video. Ok, so it jumped to 25 on the Hot 100. I can't imagine it'll go much higher. This just wasn't a good choice for the first single. Here's hoping "So Excited"—the rumored second single (a dance song!!!) will bring the Janet we know and love back. We miss her much.

Karla Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:56 AM EST

Well artistically, I like the video. It's visually interesting. And the song is pretty and light, which matches Janet's breathy voice. The girl has never had a strong voice, so her song choices have been pretty smart throughout her career.

But why is Janet dressed up like a procession of drag queens? I mean late 80s to early 90s era drag queens. Every one of those costumes would win in a dragstrip showdown.

And how fun are the Halloween wax nail tips? Omigawd, those bring back da memories!!! Do you rememeber the strange minty taste of the wax? Ack - but you gotta eat them!

You need to go back to school and learn to read AND count... the article says: "it can't be found in the top 20", you then state "her song is in the top 25" in case you don't know how to read or understand what you read, 25 is NOT top 20... he didn't say top 25, he didn't say top 30.. he said top 20. Who's got the shrimp head now?? (I bet this is way over your head and level of comprehension).

If you guys want to hear a hot song and watch a hot video, I recommend you watch Ciara's - Get Up.. that is H O T.

gregory james Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:44 AM EST

well, this decade so far has not ben kind to mrs. Jackson at all. her set "all 4 U" has sold a paltry 2 million and "Dumita Joe" has sold an abysmal 1 million, especially for an "event" record after such media and press response to the planned nipple-gate, most thought the new set would really electrify but low and behold, people are just over janet. she has been able to last but not all are Madonna, who has proved time and again that she is the TRUE Queen--Madonna has sold 10 million records more than Janet in this decade so far-so who is the queen u ask!?

monica Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:36 AM EST

I think I really agree with some of you about the song being a little middling. I was dissapointed but now i like it alot. very much it is a summer breezy song and the beat is very nice indeed. janet is going to really comeback from her last un-successfull attempts at relevance and most important she has street credit and respect from urban, white and all different audiences which will only count in her favor w/ sales in the long run.
and to all of the under-cover Mandonna fans, unless one is flamboyantly gay, an old queen, an englishman or longing for the 80's to "comeback", mandonna really doesnt and has never mattered. i actually find it funny. to say she matters is to say michael jackson still matters. their legacy is large but it is a faded one. janet, mary.j, mariah and shania are the new order. get used to it. maybe celine and toni. B...but whitney, mandonna and the like are chart history . most would agree.

Dawn Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:34 AM EST

I am a Janet stan from way back and even I think it sucks. Janet fans deserve a hell of lot better

gio Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:28 AM EST

Ummm, What Planet are some of you Living on?! Call On Me Featuring Nelly is a Very Good Song..Janet IS Back and a Top Twenty Single Is Proof of that, and it will only rise on the charts, TRUST THAT!..and to all the haters, especially the obvious Ones, Madonna is no longer a presence on the charts..sure, she sells out arenas but so does bruce springsteen and phish and JANET!! Janet is BY FAR A better Dancer and Performer than Madonna and does not rely on pure spectacle, she can move w/ the best of them..Madonna has sold a paltry 1 million records last year and is doing no better this year..ha..lets see her new single JUMP to the bottom of the bargain barrel along with Other 80's stars...Madonna as a chart/sales success and radio presence is far from over, Janet is and always has been the REAL queen of Pop..Only b/c of the color of her skin has she been denied the "media" title..Mariah is the Reigning Queen and will have to abdicate the throne for JANET!!

tim Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:20 AM EST

She needs to give up and move on to become an R&B princess vs pop queen...Madonna has that label!

Uxobii Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 10:11 AM EST

Whatever! Some of the posts here are from obvious Janet "haters". Call on Me is a nice song and the video is a lot better than most of the crap videos out there. Call on Me set a billboard record on the R& B charts beating TLC's old record and debuting better than Beyonce's Deja vu. Janet has been around for over 20 years and people still remember her. Janet is an awesome entertainer. Looking forward to the release of 20 years old!

None_of_your_bizniz Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 09:59 AM EST

HER SINGLE IS #25 ON THE 100 BILLBORD SINGLE'S CHART SHITHEAD.....GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.

chocolatespirit Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 09:52 AM EST

I like Janet and respect what she has done in terms of innovative performance styles that all the young'uns have ripped off--but we all know she's no Chakha with the vocals-and that hasn't stopped Madonna, but sorry girl at 40--all that breathy, falsetto nonsense doesn't work unless the song is HOT, and it ain't. And Nelly? Does ANYBODY care about Nelly anymore? If you gonna do a collabo as your comeback--comeback hard and get a rapper who can, uh, rap. Love you girl, think you're beautiful big or small, but yeah, go have a burger, relax and pass the torch!

Breea Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 09:35 AM EST

Janet needs to stop dressing like she's still 20 years old because all that stomach out is OLD!!! Speaking of old, she looking raggedy in the face, like an old piece of worn leather.

Lynny Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 08:33 AM EST

Dear Janet,
If you are trying to reclaim your place as R&B/Pop princess from Beyonce, this is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not the way to do it. Her video may be odd, but at least people have a reaction to it and her song is now stuck in my head. What is the name of yours again? You were my idol back in the day. I remember singing in my room to "Control" and learning the moves from Nasty Boys in the living room, playing and rewinding a VHS tape of it off of Friday Night Videos (that's right, I said Friday Night Videos). What happened to you? You used to be so fierce and now... just... I can't even talk to you right now.

Sara Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 08:28 AM EST

Who the hell is that drag queen playing Janet Jackson? no wonder there's no chemistry with Nelly. He's probably very very afraid.

Dawn Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 07:55 AM EST

Dear Janet,

We need Ms Jackson (if your nasty) to return. First, I know you love the troll J.D. but do not have him produce for you. Have him stay away from the set so you and nelly could have some chemistry. The video sucked Jan. Hook up with Mark Romanek please or at least Sanaa Hamri.

BTW Just because it worked with Thats the way love goes, you should not have went with mid tempo song. You need a club banger baddly. Think velvet rope ms jackson. Hook up with Pharrell, Timbaland, Dark Child, Scott Storch or Lil John. Just come hard with it.

Thad Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 06:55 AM EST

Makes me miss the nipple. I had such high hopes.

Tom Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 06:05 AM EST

I love Janet but enough with the sexy stuff. Didn't she learn from Madonna that too much just turns people off? Janet should be doing a Ray of Light-type of change like Madonna did in 1998 - re-introducing herself to a new generation of fans with a fresh sound, and more introspective lyrics. 20 Years Old would be the perfect vehicle to do that, but I fear it's going to be another album of sex songs with those annoying interludes that bog down her albums.

Janet is no longer a risk-taker.

Me in Berlin Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 03:19 AM EST

it's really good to hear that there are a lot of people sharing my opinion. I am a great janet fan but when I first heard this "surprise song" weekend, I felt so embaressed that I couldn't listend to it until the end. It was the same with call on me. Then I watched the video and thought "OH MY GOD", what the hell is she doin? how to hell does she looks like?? how does she moves?? what's the mess with this pirate ship?
lots of questions.
now all I hope is that the next single will be better. I did realize that her work's been so bad since she's engaged to this little...um...jermaine dupri.
just my opinion

Phil Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 01:28 AM EST

OH BOY! Where do I EVEN start!? First off, any hopes I had of "Call On Me" rebounding with a frsh video is out the door. And since all the Janet die-hard fans were calling us crazy for ridiculing her when we first heard "Call On Me" and were astounded it was a piss-poor duet with Nelly, well the video SAYS IT ALL. There is absolutely zero chemistry between Janet & Nelly, and hence, the purpose of the duet is POINTLESS. Miss Janet WHAT ARE YOU THINKIN!?

Ok, let me compose myself here. Seriously all those bright colors & flashy different costume changes, sweetie, ask any homosexual you know, I mean u HAD dancers, but evidently, the budget for the green screen left all them on the drawing board, but I digress, oh yeah I had a thought here...oh yes, NONE OF THIS MESHES!!! And to capitalize on the Pirates of the Carribbean craze to boot!? I WISH Captian Jack Sparrow would swoop on into this video and add some flair to it. It might cause some excitement & maybe make Janet actually show SOME kinda emotion in an otherwise stoic video.

Honey... sweetie... This is NOT a hit. Good luck with the 2nd single, you didn't even make it that far with the 2nd single from "DAMITA JO". Oh & if anyone at Virgin is reading this, feel free to tell Jermaine Dupri, if this is the CHEMISTRY he is goin with for the proposed Janet & Mariah duet....GET HELP NOW!!!!!!!!!

jon Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 01:02 AM EST

Dear Janet,
Some of these people below claim to be your fans, but they aren't your real fans. A real fan, like a real friend, knows when to tell you when there's a problem. The problem is that "Call On Me," your new non-existent single with a bored-looking Nelly, is bad and that the video for it is also, um, bad. Not Paris Hilton bad (I mean the video, not the song, "Stars Are Blind" is hot). Sorry, I got off track but that's exactly the point! Paris Hilton should not be more catchy, exciting or interesting than you. I can sing "Stars Are Blind" (Even though the guys are crazy...) but I can't even HEAR the words to your song. YOU'RE JANET JACKSON! This shouldn't be happening. Janet, please, dump Hype Williams (whose vids post-"Gold Digger" have been tired), eat a PowerBar, put down the Be-Dazzler and make a fun, fresh video with a fun song before the summer's over. You lost half your body weight in like a week, you can do this.

Because love would never do w/o you,
Jon

Fatima Fri, Jul 28, 2006 at 12:11 AM EST

Janet Janet Janet

What did I tell you about the ponytail with heavy bangs look? It didn't work during "Go Deep" and it ain't going to work now.

She felt oddly vacant in that video, and in a sense, oddly removed from reality. I can't believe I thought "Damita Jo" was a mess now. I would take the old school soul of "I Want You" in a heartbeat over this plain disaster. Total could have put out a better single.

Ed Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 11:56 PM EST

Janet, you promised on your website that you were going to be giving us the best of the last 20 years - u call this the best?! First of all, I waited patiently for your new song to come out - disappointed! Second, my hope was that the video would spark some interest in the song; after all you said you were going to be working with some of the best in the video biz to make this video. Instead, what do we get, you dancing in front of a green screen - U B LAZY! What did you have to do to prepare for that video except rehash some of your old moves from Pleasure Principle. Lets hope your next single makes up for this lazy attempt at a comeback. And yes, you do need a comeback because Demita Jo was a mess from head to toe.

d.c. Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 11:53 PM EST

Amen to that Michael.. The whole video was a big snooze..I had to laugh at all the robot-iconic scenes with dress-up Pomp and Pagentry that was meaningless; a romantic duet-couple that is improbable and with a song, that had no reason to be sung other than she memorized the words and promised to lip-mumble-sing them with this guy in hopes of making a lot of money.

Sally in Chicago Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 11:23 PM EST

Snooze big time. I turned it off mid-way. I just don't get it and her vocals - you can't understand a dang thing she's saying.

Derek Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 09:24 PM EST

Dear Janet fans:

Just admit it: Call On Me is BORING. Janet made a mis-step by releasing this completely forgettable fluff. Furthermore the video is an expensive piece of nothing. And FYI, although the single jumped to #25, it will stall there due to its lagging sales on iTunes simply because no one wants to pay $0.99 for a BORING single! But don't fret Janet fans - So Excited is coming soon. Slezak - keep the honest opinions coming!

bootsycolumbia Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 08:07 PM EST

That has to go on the list as one of the worst videos of the year. I haven't expected much from JJ in a long time, and she isn't disappointing me now. Boring song, no chemistry with Nelly, meaningless scenario...I hope the next single is better, because I want Janet to make a comeback. I really do. I thought she was unfairly maligned during the nipplegate thing, while Justin Timberlake got off relatively easy. Plus, I still think she's the most normal of all the Jacksons, so I'll keep cheering her on. But I don't like this video or this song.

Some Guy Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 08:01 PM EST

Dear Janet,
Im sorry but i have to agree, this video, well, its not one of your best. Im being nice, too nice. You really do look bored. And the dancing, why? Why bother when its so obvious you arent feeling it? Did Jermane put you up to this? Are you so in love that you have gone completely blind and death for that matter? How does the video fit the song? Are there pirates in your song? Maybe there are and i fell asleep before that part came up. Did you forget the difference between a slow and amazing song, and slow and painfull death? Oh Janet... Whats wrong? Wanna talk about it?

Ray Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 07:58 PM EST

Amen, Slezak. Remember how good Velvet Rope and All For You was? Then WTF was Damita Jo?! Let's compare her to Madonna and hope that right now she's in her Erotica/Bedtime Stories Phase and her Ray of Light/Music/Confessions on a Dancefloor Phase is just around the corner. (No, I didn't ACCIDENTALLY leave out American Life from that second Phase.)

simoun Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 07:10 PM EST

FYI, the single just jumped from #63 to #25 in the Billboard Hot 100. It just became available digitally. The song is reminiscent of "Doesn't Really Matter", one of her biggest hits prior to 'All for You'.

cj Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 06:41 PM EST

girl, you're in trouble

ABW Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 06:38 PM EST

Not only is the song blah (frankly, IMO blah has been her oeuvre for quite a while now), but this video really creeped the hell out of me - so much so that I couldn't even watch it to the end. So many of the shots make her look like brother Michael. I don't know if it's her age, diet, stylist or whatever. But Janet: it's over for you.

eik Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 06:35 PM EST

Yawn... yikes! I fell asleep.. is that video over yet??

I can already tell you this video is NOT going to make it to my top 10 videos list at the bar where I work.

It simply does not work.

So because one doesn't like the video or EVERY video an artist puts out, then one is a hater? Please.. get off your high horses and un-stick your nose out of her behind. The video sucks big bertha @ss.

Ed Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 06:32 PM EST

I agree with Slezak, this video is just as bad as the song. Call On Me when you release the next single! Lets hope that it's a better one than this tired piece of ship wreck - pun intended!

Paul U. Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 06:16 PM EST

I think it's pretty. it's like The Cell meets Memoirs of a Geisha, without having the narrative problems of those films. what's the problem, Slezak? don't be such a hater.

Eric Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 05:52 PM EST

I'm so sick of Slezak. So you like Janet, do you not. Call On Me is a laid back single. Not the best, not terrible at all. The video, I think, helps make the song, Slezak needs to write a letter to himself to get a life.

Alex J Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

This is an amazing video, I know your paid for your opinion. But that doesnt make it the right one.

You cant find her single in the tom 20 because she jumped from 60 to number 25 on the hot 100.

I know you say your a fan but i wonder if your just sharing your opinion or just being snarky and janky.

C Thu, Jul 27, 2006 at 05:17 PM EST

Janet does best when she is simple like the "Love would never do" video or when she is super sexy like the "If" video. She fails when she does something like "Call on me" or whatever the video was with Busta Rhymes. They are too outlandish to work. She has a sweet smile, she needs to use it in the videos because America loves a sweetheart.
