Kellie Pickler joins 'The View'

10435__kellie_l Pity poor Star Jones: Ratings for The View were up 8 percent for the week of July 3, the first five days since her very public split from the daytime chatfest. But in her defense, I'm guessing the viewership spike had more to do with interest in the show's rotating roster of guest hosts than with Star hatas returning to the fold in her absence.

I mean, I wasn't about to miss this morning's edition, featuring guest cohost Kellie Pickler, last season's sixth-place finisher on American Idol. In fact, if Pickler weren't going to be busy with a new record deal from Sony-BMG Nashville -- she announced her deal during ''Hot Topics'' -- I'd suggest Barbara Walters think about ejecting Elisabeth Hasselbot in favor of the charming-ditzy Southerner. When Walters mentioned the gossip that the 47-year-old husband of supermodel Christie Brinkley had an affair with a 19-year-old, Pickler (who recently turned 20) scored a big laugh by shouting, ''It wasn't me!,'' and later charmed the crowd with tales of her garage-door-installer beau and the new spa trend in ''fanny facials.'' Better still, Pickler wasn't at all flummoxed when Walters tried to interrupt an anecdote to make her say the word ''sal-mon.''

It was almost enough to soothe my stinging outrage that Pickler will have a single on the airwaves by late September, while fellow Idol contestant Elliott Yamin remains criminally, inexplicably unsigned.

Kelly your beautiful && you can sing

Pam Fri, Jan 19, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

Fabulous article in People several months ago about her. She talked about her mom leaving her and the last time she spoke to her was when she was in Jr. High and her moms comment was something like "If your calling me for money I can't help" That was the last she talked to her. She stated she heard she was in California. In the article she also talked of being abused by her. Such a sweet girl!! Hats off to the wonderful grandparents who raised her to be a delightful and talented sweet southern girl. THere is a song on her CD "Angel" that she wrote for her grandmother. Buy the CD it is GREAT!!!

Pam Fri, Jan 19, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

The name of the song is "I Wonder", she wrote it for her mother who left her at an early age. KELLIE IS PRECIOUS!!

Jami Fri, Jan 19, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

The song she sang is called "I Wonder"

lisa Fri, Jan 19, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

Loved the song - so why was Kelly crying?

Kelly Fri, Jan 19, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

The song she sang today brought tears to my eyes, did anyone catch the name of it?

cindy Tue, Jul 25, 2006 at 09:48 AM EST

Is Barbara suffering from old age dementia? She promptly dissed Kellie the day after her appearance because Kellie hugged her backstage. Then only minutes laters she hugged men on the show in front of the viewers. Admit it Barbara, she stole the show and you won't stand for that!

L Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 04:47 PM EST

We don't have poor opinions of ourselves, it's just that "dumb" is "dumb", and if she is putting this stupidity act on, i don't think it's cute. I'm sure many of you saw Kelli and Wolfgang Puck, come on, she fell out of her freakin chair trying to run away from a lobster!!!! Paleeees. She really needs some "dumbing down", OK, she has had it hard with her Daddy and all, but, enough of the duh act already, (maybe it is real) But she has got a very nice voice. She kinda reminds me (a little) of Kerri Underwood. Minus the goofyness. Any way,as long as she keeps singing and stops talking, she'll be fine.

melisa Thu, Jul 20, 2006 at 11:14 AM EST

Kellie is sunshine? GROAN! Didn't they used to say that about Kathy Lee Gifford? I guess I need some sunshine in my life so I can stop feeling bad about myself!;-)

ruth Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 02:17 PM EST

I never watch the View. When I found out that Kellie was going to be on, I watched. I love her and I love her voice. She is so talented. Many of you who are dissing her are Elliot fans. Come on, it's not Kellie's fault that E. hasn't signed yet. Just wait, he will.

Elizabeth Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:52 PM EST

Kellie has come a long way. Those individuals that speak so poorly of her are showing the world that they have a very low opinion of themselves.
Kellie is very talented and has the smarts. She's intelligent enough to not let those bad vibes get in her way. Success is in the cards for her. She can add a ray of sunshine where there is a dark cloud.
Kellie is sunshine.

cindy Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:58 AM EST

Keep Elisabeth and can Rosie.

L Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:15 AM EST

Kellie is not pretending to be stupid, she is stupid. I gotta give her credit where credit is due, the girl can sing. And Starr, since she lost all that weight, her face looks like Michael Jackson's made up puss in "Thriller" When Rosie comes to the "View" it will then be called "The Rosie Show" I love Rosie's brash, abrasive self. And BaBra WaWa, please, that old bat just won't go away. How old is she, 124 maybe?

melisa Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:53 AM EST

so she can sing, she isn't THAT great! So good she gets a spot on a talk show? Hmm kinda funny! The whole idiot act she played on AI turned me off to her forever. Women, especially blondes do not need her help to keep public opinion that we are stupid. she probably thinks it's cute when she acts dumb, but I am not impressed. I don't see what is so great about her, she sang just OK and I hate the dumb act, so what is her appeal?

Jenny Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 02:34 PM EST

I enjoyed Kellie on The View! She brought some life to the show!

As for Elliott, thank goodness he's not lined up to be another Clive Clone. Let's hope he's got a deal in the works with a label that is willing to take time with him and make the best possible album.

Elliott has an amazing voice and after seeing him live at the concert, it is apparent that he is absolutely tickled to be performing. I'd pay to seem him over and over again!

Love me some Elliott!

Annie Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:15 PM EST

I find it almost impossible to believe that Elliott hasn't got a deal tucked up and just waiting to be announced. This guy can sing better than most people already in the charts - he deserves a contract, I hope he's got one. I for one will buy his CD.

Waiting for Friday Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 01:06 PM EST

Yes, I've been worrying about Elliott too. Hopefully he is driving a hard bargain! He deserves a contract!!!!

Chris Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 12:31 PM EST

Kellie was great on The View! Although I never watch the show I made sure to watch it when I heard Kellie would be hosting. She added much needed balance, southern charm, and hospitality, and tamed the wildcats so to speak.

For those claiming Kellie can't sing, you are dead wrong. Kellie is a great singer with the most beautiful voice I've heard in a long time. She sings better than most signed artists. Listen to her sing the national anthem, nobody does it better:

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/entertainment/special_packages/american_idol/14518397.htm

E fans, don't worry about Elliott. He will do fine regardless of what Kellie does.

gumby Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:26 AM EST

Arthelle Neville & Aiesha Tyler would both be worthy of the spot.

Smarty Pants Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 11:32 PM EST

The ratings for "The View" are up because of all the controversey surrounding it. Star should have laid low to avoid generating such publicity for the show if she really wanted to stick it to them.

CathyEM Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 10:48 PM EST

I wouldn't worry about Elliott too much. He definitely has a sparkle in his eye and seems waaaay too upbeat for someone with no prospects. My guess is that he has at least one very lucrative deal on the table and that as soon as his AI contract runs out in August, some lucky record label will claim him. He has stated for the record that he is working on a CD right now.

Nancy Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 10:27 PM EST

I agree. Why would they sign all 10? Because their precious Chris came 4th place!! Why vote if you are lumped with their top 10? Chris is a dime a dozen. Every singer on Rockstar is better than him.

Elliott has classic appeal. He'll outlast every singer on AI but AI wants low hanging fruit so we have to wait for someone who thinks of the 'art of music' instead of the 'business of music' to sign him up.

Kathy Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 09:41 PM EST

Kellie was fabulous on The View today - cute, charming, and hilarious. She is a natural at this; get her a talk show already!! And about Elliott Yamin - the best singer to ever grace the stage of AI; let him announce his deal already - we all know he's got one!! Talent like his comes along once in a blue moon; can't wait for his CD.

Nancy Walker Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 08:19 PM EST

Hope she does not behave like a space cadet. I think her voice is decent. Lets give Kellie a chance to prove what she is made of.

sciencefan Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 08:08 PM EST

Michael Slezak, I have good news for you. Elliott DOES have a record deal.

Chris Daughtry will NOT be signing with Fuel, he's going to be signing his own record deal and starting his own band. Randy thinks this was the best thing for Chris to do.

Randy lists everyone "making an album"
Taylor Hicks
Katharine McPhee
!!Elliott Yamin!!
Chris Daughtry
Paris Bennett
Kellie Pickler

Loner Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 07:02 PM EST

So,now, of the Idols, we have 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th places signed with 19Recording labels (and rumored that 7th place Ace Young will be next). Taylor won with spazoid dancing and poorly sung/acted "soul" covers. How will that be sold on a CD? Katherine won second place with limited range, one-octave singing. How will a CD be filled and marketed with that? Kellie is ditzy and humorous. How will a CD contain that? Chris got a band and other collaborators for his CD, so he may fly.

Hmmm...seems to me that CD's are supposed to be about SINGING? Why won't they at least let Yamin announce? It's an insult to THIRD PLACE Yamin to keep announcing these other lame "stars" as signing and remain silent about the real singer!

Carla Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 06:45 PM EST

I like Pickler, Daughtry, Hicks and McPhee okay and don't have a problem with them signing with 19E but what I really want to know is, what lucky recording company is getting YAMIN?!!!

mark Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 06:13 PM EST

Slezak!! i'm just as big an elliot fan of u and i went to an AI concert and one thing that had me saddened that u didn't mention is how much thinner he looks. Since he's diabetic, it had me a little worried to see him looking noticeably thinner than when on the show!! Did anyone else who went to see the AI tour notice this?

Anonymous Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 04:18 PM EST

Elliott--DO NOT sign with Clive Davis--he does not deserve you!

Tina Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 03:45 PM EST

Kellie can not sing, and this is just stupid. Why is AI asking me for my money (text votes) if they are just going to sign half of the top ten. No way I am voting next year, it is pointless.

Oh yeah, and Elliott better get a deal!

Sarah Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 03:04 PM EST

Aw, I'm mad that I missed Kellie on "The View"! She always makes me laugh...she's funny! And re: the record deal, I heard she was signed by 19E (their country label or something), which is why she's able to announce her signing now. I thank the lucky stars that 19E does NOT want to sign Elliott, and when his 90 days is up, I think he will announce his deal, and I look forward to that day...because he deserves it more than anyone else this season...

me Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 03:03 PM EST

Watching Kellie Pickler somehow makes me dumber everytime, I think she's sucking intelligence from the world and stuffing it in her bra.

Miles Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

The more I see of her, the less I like Barbara Walters, shouldn't she just be mummified and buried in a tomb somewhere.

Kyle C. Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:51 PM EST

Criminal...inexpicable...disgraceful...

how does the best vocalist of the year...potentially their best male vocalist ever...the heir apaprent to Donny and Luther...NOT get signed?

GOOD GRIEF! Houston, we HAVE a problem!

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:48 PM EST

Brandy makes sense, Rosie doesn't.

Here is what should have happened:

Viera is replaced by Rosanna Scotto
Star is replaced by Brandy, Thea Vidal (since ratings went up when Star was heavy), or Annonda Lewis

Joy and Republiditz.

Irene Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:33 PM EST

Wow, everyone needs to calm down about Elliott and a record deal. Do you honestly think that he hasn't already been picked up? I believe that a deal was worked out months ago and Elliott just has to wait the 90 days to announce.HAVE PATIENCE! THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!

bootsycolumbia Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:25 PM EST

Evra, yeah, that is a bold statement, but I happen to agree with you. When I watched Idol last season, I kept saying to myself, this guy (Elliot) is almost unmarketable--and I meant it in a good way. I'd almost call him adult contemporary, but that kind of music (imo) tends to be kind of dull. He doesn't fit into the categories of pop music that we currently hear--I mean, he's nothing like Justin Timberlake or Usher or Josh Groban. He really does remind me of a Luther Vandross, a pure singer who just sings for the joy of it. I think it's a good thing he didn't win. After all, he'd be stuck doing Ford commercials. That's not a dis against Taylor Hicks. I just mean it's a total waste of Taylor's talent. I can't see Elliot Yamin doing stuff like that. I hope he's just holding out for the best contract he can get, one that will really let his talent shine.

Melissa Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:19 PM EST

I love watching the View now that Star is gone. It's the best thing to happen to daytime tv since Kelly Ripa joined Regis! Poor Elisabeth is so naive, though. I love her reactions when they talk about "porn" and how she'd react if she caught her hubby with it. She's so sweet, I don't know how she's going to survive the show once Rosie comes on!

Suzanne Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:07 PM EST

completely agree, stephanie. Another news person would be great--I heard today that Brandy is on the short list to replace Star! What?! A good investigative reporter who wants to be located in one spot would be WAY better!

And so true about Elliott. Kellie seems like a sweetheart, but I so miss seeing Elliott sing every week.

Evra Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 02:00 PM EST

This is total crap! There is no way that Elliott could get passed over for a sixth place finisher. Is it possible that the powers that be heard a scrambled version of that amazing voice that we heard during this season of AI? With a now deceased Luther V., I can't think of anyone out there today with a better set of chops. I know that is a bold statement, but really, who does have a better voice than Elliott Yamin. IMO he's got that gig locked up. So where is his record deal?

GTH Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:36 PM EST

I get you with that "sting". It gets me each time someone besides Elliott announces their big record label deal. Elliott's Idol contract is up in late August (90 days post-Idol finale). I'm sure we'll hear some news from him at that time. Everyone's that has announced to date has inked with an AI affiliated label. It appears that Elliott will go elsewhere. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Connie Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:28 PM EST

I think that Elliot is tied to 19/Sony/BMG for at least 1 year post Idol. If he doesn't want to be marketed that way or if he wants better R & B coverage, perhaps he's biding his time until he is allowed to get a deal elsewhere. Clive Davis hasn't done much for Bo Bice, I'm not sure what Chris Daughtry was thinking signing with him.

Josh Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:28 PM EST

Kellie's got a future. I don't think her singing career has much promise (do you remember her disasterous "Blame It On The Sun?") But she's got enough spunk to make it on TV. Meanwhile, I'm still holding out for the Kevin Covais single.

investigativesponge.typepad.com

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:26 PM EST

Here is the problem:

I am sure that Kel is bubbly and full of life but The View is a serious news talk show for women. We don't need two Melodies from Josie and the Pussycats running the program. Now can we please get a news lady on the show besides Babs?

Annie Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:19 PM EST

I agree iwth you Slezak about the "criminally, inexplicably" part of Elliott Yamin being unsigned. I mean come on. Kellie is really cute and funny, but she is suited to be on a place like the View or some sitcom, not a recording star, while Elliott has pipes that I could listen to for endlessly.

curls4di Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:07 PM EST

I enjoyed Kellie Pickler on the View today. She was like a breath of fresh air.

Ed Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 01:01 PM EST

I get embarrest everytime Elizabeth speaks. She is so Valarie Cherish!

Ernesto Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 12:51 PM EST

I am not a THE VIEW fan, but when I knew Kellie would be on I had to watch it, She is a very cute and funny girl !!!! Thank God for STAR getting the boot!!!Pity Star, she seems to need the sympathy now that screwed her chances by going against Barbara Walters Ha Ha!
