A 'Friends' reunion? Really?

Jul 18, 2006, 03:49 PM | by Scott Brown

Categories: Television

93245__jen_l In the Friends yearbook, Jennifer Aniston appears under the rubric "Least Likely To Call for a Friends Reunion Episode." And yet here she is, saying she wouldn't mind doing a Thanksgiving-themed encore ep.

Now we've all said silly things to British journalists before -- it's part of growing up. But Aniston, who appears to be some kind of movie star despite critics' claims to the contrary, could make a Friends reunion happen with no more than a tilt of her head; everybody else, I imagine, would follow, if the price was right. (LeBlanc would probably do it for a roast beef sandwich and a ride to the set.) Imagine if George Clooney made some casual comment about scrubbing in at E.R. I think NBC would be on the line in less than two minutes, on the off chance he was serious.

I suppose the larger question is: Do we need a Friends reunion? Would it be a sentimental treat, or too much, too soon? Should we wait until they're a little more decrepit? It'd be more poignant that way. I want to see them swatting a new generation of hipsters off the Central Perk couch with rolled up copies of Newsday. No, wait: I don't want to see that at all. Do you?

hi i m sagar amd i like to mor and mor friends to oll wolds

Barbara Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

It's a perfect time to start thinking about shooting at least 1 more episode, (Maybe even a Movie)
It will be a great hit! Millions of people will be watching it, and also, it could be nomineed for an Emmy or Oscar.

And we all miss Matty LB so much. and it will be so amazing if we could just see him playing his amazing role as Joey Tribbiani. His Daughter has a very seriuos Brain diseasse, and I think that he could really need the money. Not just for his dauther, but for his life.
I Think that you guys should start filming this september than maybe air it on the summer of 2009. It will be almost 6 years past since then. SO please.. do this for us. We would really apreciate it. And Also, We would be really satisfied with a real ending to this wonderful, amzing sitcom.
So come one.... Please?

danpop Sat, Feb 9, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

friends...please come back I miss you guys so much... I only hope you miss it as much as we do...I hope it happens soon.

emilie Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

and for all the ppl that say that it would like wreck the originals ...it wouldn't because they have such great writers that they would make sure we wouldn't forget the originals(they're too good to forget anyways)...and btw im only 14 so by the time i started watching Friends it was only reruns so it would be great to see a friends episode which would be the first time it aired on tv.and im probably their #1 fan cause i have all there seasons and still watch it everyday on tv...and since i've started watching friends(about 3 years ago) i've wanted to become an actress ..so ppl that say it's not a great show ...you are so wrong...A REUNION SHOW WOULD BE SO GREAT!

emilie Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Okay i know that like the comments there have been posted there like so long ago but i just saw it...and i have to say that Friends is like the best show in the entire world...seriously maybe when you put those comments in was too early to make a friends reunion show but it has been almost 4 years so it would be great time for a reunion in a year. and btw for all you ppl that put all kind of crap on jen anniston ..c'mon wake up she's like the best actrice in the world and she's not bad in the movie and maybe she still plays a little rachel from friends but i think she still had few things in comment with rachel and it can officialy cant be easy to let go a character you played for 10 years go and probably love playing so much. And it doesn't mean that if they would make a reunion show that it means that the career is not going well...it could mean that they're doing for the public that wants it so badly.

Sophie F Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

Btw, I dont mean RIGHT NOW Lol

Sophie F Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

I really think there should be a Friends reunion! Seriously, for so many reasons, yes, I am a Friends Fan, and I've gotta say, It was one of the greatest shows of its time! Anyway, First of all, there will be millions of viewers, they'd have fun doing it, and, also, they'd get payed ALOT for it :P So, Why not?

umer rashid Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 07:26 AM EST

friends in my opinion was the most heartwarming serial, which has given people laugh in such desperate times. i miss all the cast especially lisa, and want them to be reunited. this show should never end.

Anberin Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

Its ashame that friends ended.I only watched the last series but found it really good and funny. I think friends should come back every year or after a few years on special ocassions such as thanksgiving and christmas.
miss friends hope that the friends team get reunited.

jayman Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 07:32 PM EST

my comment is really about tyler d ? ermm.. you said that the producers where "eager" to give a "happy" conclusion . but really you dont know what happend. PHEOBE AND MIKE. yes chandler and monica there amrried with twins. but then ross and rachell ohhh its good stuff c'mon everyone loves it. i agrree with whoever said that the first threee series where the best. and the lucy vella girl. get all 10 seasons in one go ? . bye! people x

HelloThere Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 03:36 PM EST

LISA KUDROW. Now there's another great actress. She was in "The Opposite of Sex" and in so many other great films. Jennifer Aniston is a sub-mediocre actress, I'm sorry, but it's true, she's getting comedic and dramatic roles that should be going to lesser-known but far more talented actresses. That's my problem with it. Oh, to have Lisa Kudrow be the female lead in The Break-Up with Vince Vaughn instead-- I'd pay $10 to see that movie! The reason why people are saying Aniston is a bad actress NOW is not because of her divorce, it's because ONLY in the last TWO YEARS has the public seen her acting in movies. Because she's acting in other roles besides Rachel Green from Friends now, her poor acting abilities are finally coming to light. I always thought Rachel Green was Jennifer Aniston playing herself. The criticism that Jennifer Aniston is not a good actress is well-grounded.

Love 'Friends', love Jen, would love a reunion-
Seriously, look at all the crap on TV now-all the good shows are gone, it's crappy reality and 'America's Got Talent'?! Uh, no...it doesn't.

dma69 Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:23 PM EST

Friends is overrated and Jen is a bland actress. Period. Don't believe me? Watch every film she's been in. She's STILL playing Rachel. She needs to get that role out of her system if she expects to still have a career.

Kiki Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:07 PM EST

Oops, meant Meryl Streep (speed-typing)!

Tiff Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:55 AM EST

OK, I know this has nothing to do with the article, but I thought the Arrested fans would like to know that they are thinking about making a movie about it. Here's the link. http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=12144

Kiki Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:51 AM EST

Too soon for a reunion, give it 5 years at least.

Yikes, anybody who calls Jennifer Aniston a great actress, doesn't know what great acting truly is (Meryl Street, Kate Blanchett, Michelle Pfeiffer). She plays Rachel in EVERY movie! Those fans probably like her cuz she's cutesy, seems FRIENDLY and so they say she's a good actress. C'mon people admit it her persona you like, not her acting, you can't be serious!! Anybody I know who likes her, admit they like HER, but that she's a below-average actress.

Even now, it's only cuz of Brad she gets so much ink. Ever hear about Lisa Kudrow? Nuff said.

Dave Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:19 AM EST

I was going to take a look at everyone's posts and then comment how I thought it would be too soon. That is, until I saw Elyse mention how Seinfeld sucks. I don't know if there's enough voltage in the universe to electro-shock me back to coherence. How in the name of Cosmo Kramer can you say Seinfeld sucks??? It was one of THE BEST SHOWS EVER! No other show captured the, well, nothingness of the '90s better or in nearly as clever and funny a way. Not to mention that Friends (and countless other shows since) would not have even existed without Seinfeld. Ok, time to breathe and relax. I'm off the soapbox...

Howard Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 11:15 AM EST

Mike, do yourself a favor and check out the first three seasons of the show - they were ribs-hurting funny, and the chemistry between the six of them was fantastic. That said, I don't want to see a reunion (heck, I loved Seinfeld and I don't want to see a reunion there either). They put all the characters in a good place (except Joey left his and went to a really crappy place), and it's not really necessary to see where they are now (especially since the show's only been off for two years). Let everyone do some other stuff for a while.

Tyler D Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 10:20 AM EST

Freinds was "relevant" only due to the fact that it was part of pop-culture. It didn't really tackle any serious issues or break new ground. As for a reunion, it's too soon and I would only watch if there was some actual turmoil within the group. I don't need another saccharine ending from a show that was all too willing to provide its fans an easy, happy conclusion.

Xin Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:42 AM EST

Why do people rush Friends or Jen are over-rated??? At its time, Friends was relevant and highly admired series. It still is. But just because it is behind us now and it does not have the hype, we should not rush to say it is all over-rated. We all saw it for full 10 years, so, I think that sums it up. Concerning Jen Aniston, I think she is smart and talented. Anyone who has a problem with that should be some sort of a retard or a person who thinks he or she is smart if he or she bad-mouths Jen Aniston.

jj Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:38 AM EST

Every time Jen Aniston says something, people start opening their 'smart' mouth to criticize her from her not being good actress to her divorce. I find that a bit strange. I like Friends, I loved it through the entire time. I still watch re-runs. I really don't think they will do any episode though. Jen was trying to be polite and not say a big 'no.' So the Americans think she is going to do Friends :) Funny Americans, you need to understand proper English before you open your mouth. Any ways, so many people admire Jen and her acting. The so called critics never said good things about her (especially since her divorce) and they never said anything good about anyone any way. So can't be bothered.

GERRARD Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:33 AM EST

I LIKED FRIENDS, I STILL MISS THEM. SOME PEOPLE SAY THEY DON'T WANT TO SEE FRIENDS - WHAT DO U WANT TO SEE? PRISON BREAK?? BESIDES, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANISTON NOT BEING AN ACTRESS. SHE HAS BEEN ACTING SINCE FOREVER AND NOBODY CAME TO BADMOUTH HER AFTER HER BREAKUP. SO SHE IS GETTING THE HEAT JUST FOR SOME OTHER REASON AND NOT FOR HER TALENT. SHE IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTRESSES KNOWN TO ME AND TO MOST PEOPLE. AND I DON'T BELIEVE THE BULL THE SO CALLED SMART NEW YORK CRITICS ARE SAYING. THEY HAVE NOTHING POSITIVE TO SAY ANY WAY ABOUT ANYONE. SO IN SHORT, I NEED FRIENDS BACK FOR ONCE. BUT SILLY GUYS THINK JEN SAID 'YES.' SHE DIDN'T, SADLY. SHE WAS JUST BEING POLITE. HAPPY NOW?

Tim Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 09:12 AM EST

Friends is overrated. Never watched it. And Jennifer Aniston is just one step away from doing Lifetime movies on a regular basis.

Sara Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 08:37 AM EST

Her quote was:

"The only thing I can think of doing is maybe for fun doing a Thanksgiving episode. Our Thanksgiving episodes were really fun."

HOW does this mean that she WANTS to do a reunion? It sounds exactly like the answer you'd give to a question you're too nice to say "no" to. Vague, not a definite no, but also not a definite yes, end on a positive note.

HelloThere Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:08 AM EST

Jennifer Aniston is the most overrated actress. I don't want to see Aniston acting beyond Friends reruns, her acting is boring and one-note, and her facial and body ticks while she's acting are beyond annoying. I want to scratch my eyeballs out and shave my head in frustration because I don't understand why people would pay $10 for a movie ticket to see sub-mediocre acting.

Reese Witherspoon, Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, Jodie Foster, Lindsay Lohan, Meryl Streep, Scarlett Johansson, Kirsten Dunst, Christina Applegate, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz...those women I want to see act because they act really well in different roles.

Not Jennifer Aniston. Unfortunately the only role she's ever been good in is Rachel Green from Friends.

HelloThere Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 05:05 AM EST

Mike Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 02:44 AM EST

Friends, in my opinion, was over-rated...massively. It was only mildly entertaining (although I gotta admit I didn't start watching till the last 3-4 seasons). As for a reunion...I dont' think anyone will watch. Jennifer Aniston did a good Rachel...but that's about it...all the movies she's ever done were trashed by audiences and critics alike...except ONE movie, which was The Good Girl...and that's because Jake Gyllenhaal was in it. =D

Ned Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 01:13 AM EST

Sounds like a fun idea to me, as long as they don't break up Ross and Rachel again.

Jessica Wed, Jul 19, 2006 at 12:18 AM EST

Do it, do it, do it. NBC needs the ratings and I need some Friends.

It is not too soon. It has been what? Three years? Bring it on!

Marci Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 11:30 PM EST

No. No reunion now or ever. Friends is, in my opinion, one of the most overrated TV shows ever. Jennifer Aniston is one of the most overrated actresses ever. She has no screen presence, no charisma; I agree, the only reason she wants a reunion is because she's finally realized that she's just not that good. She can't do anything else but play Rachel.

Just Me Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 08:53 PM EST

Brian:
Don't pop the bottons off your shirt. Friends was trash. I don't want to see their silly pusses on the television anymore.

Brian Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 08:39 PM EST

all you people who don't want a Friends reunion...you'd rather watch what, Two and a Half Men? Friends was a success due to great writing and adept acting. If they can get the key people back for both, then I think it would be worth watching

Just Me Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 06:55 PM EST

Please, no friends reunion. This show-which was a load of garbarge, does not need any more time in television world. There is enough trash on TV. No thank you friends.

john Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 06:35 PM EST

please, no, not that....on a side note Elyse how can you not like Seinfeld? (not that there's anything wrong with that)it's an absolute classic in my book, though I'll admit that the series finale (with the exception of the funny clips from past episodes) pretty much stank up the rm

Wee Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 05:40 PM EST

Hi Ed, they actually had a 90210 reunion a few years ago, where a lot of the regulars (including Shannen Doherty) reminisced on the show. Was pretty good.

I'm not sure if it's "too soon" for a "Friends" reunion. TV is pretty much dead, in general. How often does a "not-that-recently-cancelled-popular-show" come back?

If the writers decided to re-inact the characters, they would def need some interesting stories to justify the reunion so soon.

If it's just a case of the cast getting back together at the set of Central Perk to discuss their favourite moments, they could wait at least 5 years for that.

Would still watch, though...

lars Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 05:38 PM EST

No.

Ed Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 05:09 PM EST

Jennifer Aniston needs to get together with Michael Patrick King and do a t.v series about a has-been movie actress trying to make a comeback. They should call it "Friends Reunion".

Shawna Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:51 PM EST

Now on the other hand I WILL watch a 90210-esque reunion show where all of the actors come back and sit at a round table and just discuss the show and funny "behind the scenes" stuff.

Shawna Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:49 PM EST

Where are they planning on doing the "Reunion Set (stage)"? Chandler and Monica moved out of/sold the crazy purple and blue apartment and Joey moved to LA. I just don't forsee a good reunion without the main set. Anywho... if NBC does do a reunion I might watch it, but it's definitely not a must see for me.

frie0286 Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:16 PM EST

maybe miss aniston is starting to realize what the rest of the world has known since that little film she made called "picture perfect" - the woman can't headline a major motion picture to save her life. the suggestion of a reunion can only be a reaction to a fastly declining career that needs to be salvaged in some way. of course she would suggest the only role she was ever likeable/successful in portraying.

brandonk Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:07 PM EST

Hmmm...interesting...wasn't her ex-husband on one of their Thanksgiving episodes? I'd love a Friends reunion, although it would be kind of weird after Joey not mentioning them the whole two years he lived in LA. I always thought that show would have done better if they'd started out every episode with him talking to one of his Friends on the phone for a minute. On the other hand, Frasier didn't do that, and that show lasted a long time (and was good). Ramble, ramble, ramble...I guess I'm done now.

jon Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 04:02 PM EST

I don't understand US TV audiences' belief that a TV show has to begin and end, and the only way it can ever come back is with some corny "reunion" episode or a bad TV movie. Look at BBC America and shows like "Absolutely Fabulous." By our standards, that show was cancelled forever ago but it came back several times with movies and whole seasons. Never were the episodes "special" in any way except that they were new but it was a limited run.

Friends is one of those shows that wasn't based on anything but its characters, so they can easily come back and just do an episode or six episodes if they want. It doesn't have to have special graphics or a name (like "A Very Special Friends Thanksgiving") but just "look, here's a new episode of a very popular show that is not coming back next season, btw." NBC can figure out how to put that in a commercial.

Elyse Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:53 PM EST

And by the way.....Seinfeld sucks...I actually think it's one of the dumbest shows I've ever seen.

Elyse Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:53 PM EST

saw....or whatever

Elyse Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:53 PM EST

And by the way.....Seinfeld sucks...I actually think it's one of the dumbest shows I've ever seen.

Elyse Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

I don't think it's too soon at all. I loved that show soooo much, and I love Jennifer Aniston. I say go for it, I know I would tune in, and you know all of you people saying it's too soon for a reunion would be watching it too, so pipe down and enjoy it, complaining punks.

Nicole Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:43 PM EST

Yeah, and while we're at it, how about a Will & Grace reunion too? Way too soon. I still feel like the series practically just ended. I agree with the rest - maybe in five years. And I also agree with Geno - bring on the Seinfeld reunion!

Christopher Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:37 PM EST

Too soon. Maybe in another five years? I dunno. But it should be when the characters have left reruns for a period, too.

Chuck U. Farley Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:34 PM EST

The problem is that they wouldn't stop at just one "special episode". Pretty soon there'd be a Christmas show, a Hanukah Armadillo reunion, a St. Patrick's Day drunken reunion... All of which will dilute the power of the original.

Sometimes it's better to just walk away on top and keep your memories as is.

ShaneXtopher Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:16 PM EST

I'd rather see a Friends: Fear Factor edition.

Howard Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:16 PM EST

Give us time to miss them first. As much as I love Jen (and really loved Rachel, especially in the beginning before Jen lost weight), I think this is one instance where we shouldn't see them all together for a while.

Matt Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:15 PM EST

I think that doing it now would make it seem too soon, but if they did it in like 10-15 years from now it would be rather weird to see Ross taking Metamucil, and other old age quirks such as that. And I mean doesn't doing that show reunion thing, sort of hint off that your career isn't going well? So give it maybe 3-4 years from now, and we'll probably see a 'Friends' reunion.

nina Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:13 PM EST

Yeah, it's definitely too soon. I love the show and all but... no.

Geno Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:09 PM EST

No thanks. The show had a great run. Let it go. "Seinfeld"
is one show that I would LOVE to see return even on a 1-shot basis....

Graeme Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:01 PM EST

No. It's not a good idea. And why do these rumours keep popping up every couple of months?
I'm still skeptical that Aniston said it because I always thought Aniston, Cox, or Kudrow would never agree to do it.

JL Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

I would love to see it. Period.

whiteshark17 Tue, Jul 18, 2006 at 03:00 PM EST

Nope, way too soon. The show just went off the air two years ago. Although I wouldn't be apposed to say, an hour or two hour show of each of the actors favorite moments with them commenting on them. They should wait at least five year (hopefully ten) before a where are the now one episode special, or even a movie. Hello, in ten years we could have the Friends movie!
