Snap Judgment: Christina Aguilera's new single!

Jun 1, 2006, 06:04 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

155843__xtina_l This may wind up being my last blog item of the afternoon, seeing that as soon as I finish posting it, I've got to shut my office door and engage in a little bit of light, Da Vinci Code-style corporal mortification. And what sin would require such a rousing bout of self-abuse, you might ask? Well, earlier this afternoon, I got my first earful of Christina Aguilera's new single, ''Ain't No Other Man,'' (check it out here) and my response was one of only mild enthusiasm, something along the lines of ''Hey, that's pretty good.''

Clearly, though, after two solid hours of repeated listening, I've seen the error of my ways: Xtina 2006 is fabulous, funky, retro horn-y, and in great voice, delivering what should be an off-kilter kick to the keister of rote top-40 radio. Who knows, if ''Ain't No Other Man'' makes it big, maybe America can find room on the charts for Lina, a fellow retro-R&B diva with one foot in the '20s? Oh Xtina, can you find it in your heart to forgive me?

And what about you, PopWatchers, do you think I deserve the cilice? Holla!

#1 voice is Whitney #2 voice is Christina #3 voice is Lauren Hill #4 voice is Beyonce #5 is Mariah Carrie

rachael miller Fri, Jun 16, 2006 at 09:11 PM EST

I've got to say beyonce is a liitle more of what "pop" music is today, but Christina is 100 times better of a singer. But as for stage presence they're about equal. As for that Cove list or whatever, I dont know why whitney wasn't ranked 1 she is like the best singer of all time. I love both Christina and Beyonce, they are my two favorite singers behind whitney.

aurora Thu, Jun 15, 2006 at 06:45 PM EST

I love you christina and so does my friend Jay

tandile Mon, Jun 12, 2006 at 08:27 AM EST

I read a lot of negative comments about Christina. I guess some people will alwayz be negative and will never face the truth: Christina Aguilera has a MAGNIFICENT voice, this is not like any voice you here from a street corner, we are talkin about 4 octaves!!
About Beyonce vs Christina, Christina very obviously has a better voice but we should not compare the two because they are both VERY talented and brilliant in entertaining us and we should love them both!! TT

funnee_mee Mon, Jun 12, 2006 at 12:23 AM EST

Owh!! i love this song even for the first time i heard it..it's grooooooooooooovy, man!! this song is just superb..this song brings energy to me..

Renzo Fri, Jun 9, 2006 at 02:15 AM EST

Everybody watch the new video "ain't no other man" it is so hot and amazing. Plus the male lead actor is me. What do you think? e-mail Christina with your thoughts.-Renzo Lewis. A big ovation to Christina, Bryan Barber ,Jeri(the reason the dancers are fierce}and all crew and staff. Good Bless.

Carlos J Wed, Jun 7, 2006 at 10:03 AM EST

It's the best i have ever heard from her... good for her... it's going to be a hit, for sure.

Rawgik Tue, Jun 6, 2006 at 03:31 AM EST

Nobody here knows who DJ Premier is, right?
Sigh..

Steven Mon, Jun 5, 2006 at 12:49 PM EST

Hey ya! Loved the song! Between Britney and Christina, this is gonna be a RoCkiN' 2006!

chanuo Mon, Jun 5, 2006 at 10:15 AM EST

I took time for me before I said, I like it. Yah something is missing. I am excited though. She mentioned that her new album is a double CD!!!! I AM SO FREAKIN' Excited!

Todd Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 05:29 PM EST

Love it! Love the retro feel; to classic disco, but also a bit of a nod to Dee-Lite. They went away too fast.

aramisx Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 04:20 PM EST

The song is actually pretty kickin'. It's definitely different than what is out there. It's retro and funky... kudos to her, let's hope the rest of the album evokes similar feelings.

Doug Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 03:38 PM EST

Slezak's starting to sound like Randy Jackson...I don't understand a thing he's talkin' about.

Nick Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 03:23 PM EST

I like this song, it's funky, fun and makes me wanna dance in my office! Go Christina! Oh my co-workers are asking me to sit down...

I agree with this guy too! Damn you PopWatch!

"i hate you popwatch. i hate you so much. because of you i'm pretty sure i'll lose my job pretty soon. i basically spend 50% of my time during the day on this site. and now the entire office has had to endure this christina aguilera song all day long. damn you popwatch. i hate you because i love you so much."

jon Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 01:57 PM EST

I kinda liked the new song... But it sounds like something's missing, like they needed to incorporate the sound from just one other instrument (maybe a high hat or some strings) because it's threadbare. I already know Xtina can sing, but I thought that she needed more to support the vocals. I'd HATE to say this but J-Ho's producers did better with sampled horns in "Get Right," ugh, I feel sick having to say that...

dave Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 01:30 PM EST

dma69 Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:38 PM EST

Heard the new XTina song and it's good, but I had to choose the song of the summer of '06, it would be either PROMISCUOUS by Nelly Furtado & Timbaaland or DANI CALIFORNIA by Red Hot Chili Peppers. But it does beat having to listen to BAD DAY or YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL for the gazillionth time.

Brian Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:29 PM EST

this song better be everywhere this summer... OR ELSE

R.C Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:09 PM EST

hmmm...beyonce vs. christina? i love them both.!!!! .but the queen will always be mariah..oh and beyonces "dangerously in love" album DID outsell christinas "STRIPPED" (NOT UNstripped)..but by a very slim margin..I think beyonce sold like just over 4 million and x-tina sold like 3.9 million or something...they're both extremely talented singers and songwriters but I give x-tina the edge for that angelic godsend of a voice..I can't wait to see how it all plays out on the charts cuz their upcoming albims are going to be released one month apart! Christinas is dropping august 15th while beyonces "B-day" is scheduled for release on her birthday september 5th...loves it! p.s. the "nelly furtado guy" is timbaland...their collaboration "promiscuous" is my current favorite listening and in heavy rotation no matter where i go....it will be the song of the summer 2006...mark my words!

Josh Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 10:59 AM EST

It's only taken a few months but finally a new pop song I'd listen to again.

dmac Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:50 AM EST

FYI, "Fighter" is one of the top played songs in my IPOD, lol so im a dual Fanatic of both haha. Woot Woot!

dmac Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:48 AM EST

LOL you people are taking this way to seriously, But atleast this post is becoming fun and interesting. Most of the post on EW remind me of C-span!!!!!!, Haha Yay @ blatant homosexuality, and name-calling..

Did someone say "Nelly Furtado guy" haha...

Im goign to eat my frosted flakes and check back here in um, an hour and see what else has transpired.

Jenny Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:34 AM EST

"If you are going to quote Cove magazine to prove Beyonce's greatness (she was ranked #7 behind Whitney Houston), why not mention that Christina was ranked #1 in the same list? (#2 was Mariah Carey)"

Oh snap! dmac just got pwnd!

Stevie Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:33 AM EST

Ernesto, thank you for that info. LMAO when I read that.

I like the song, very catchy, love the horns. Have always loved her voice. She has one unlike some of the other pop "divas" who came out around the time. (Sorry, Brit cannot sing. Perform, sure, sing, no.)

On the Beyonce vs. Christina debate (I have uncontrollable urges to join any that I see), I prefer Christina. I find Beyonce ridiculous for two reasons: "I don't think you're ready for this jelly." WTF? and her live performances do not showcase the voice she does have. This is every live performance I have seen of hers: "OOOH! WOAH! OOOO! AHHHH! OOOOOOOOO!"

CJ Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:29 AM EST

GREAT and awesomelly fresh
love it

Ed Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:12 AM EST

BMA, I think the gays, me included, will only like this song when the remixes come out. Remember the frenzy you felt when the DJ would finally play "Dirty". I don't care who I finally hooked up wiith at the club, when "dirty" came on, they were H-I-S-T-O-R-Y.
The only frenzy I'm going to feel for the original version of this song is the frenzy of ordering another round of cosmos.
I'll wait for Neptunes or the Nelly Furtado guy to remix this song (along with a back up rap).

jason Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 09:08 AM EST

i'm kinda bias because x-tina is my second favorite singer, but i love those gritty horns in the background. this is the first single, and just like"dirrty" it's main purpose is to get the buzz going again on christina. from what i hear, the album is off the hook, with all kinds of different early influences. it is kinda reminiscent of prince, but who better to be inspired by? make sure you guys who like it check her out on the mtv movie awards, she's performing it then - june 8th (date, not sure) i think. can't WAIT for the album to drop.

mytoxic Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 07:38 AM EST

Just like X-tina........:):)

bma Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 07:28 AM EST

On behalf of all the gays, WE LOVE IT! (at least, I'm pretty sure we all will, especially when the remixes come out...)

Note to Ms. Britney -- put in a diaphragm already! K-Fed is killing your career honey, with all these damn babies!!

mytoxic Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 07:08 AM EST

我今天下载的,《Ain't No Other Man》is very good ! 我很喜欢。

Julie,

If you are going to quote Cove magazine to prove Beyonce's greatness (she was ranked #7 behind Whitney Houston), why not mention that Christina was ranked #1 in the same list? (#2 was Mariah Carey)

Blinked_eye Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 04:10 AM EST

I just heard it on the radio and woah...THIS IS COMING FROM CHRISTINA AGUILERA?!!?!?! Just amazing! GENIUS!

Emily Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 02:53 AM EST

After months of listening to James Blunt, Howie Day, Gavin DeGraw, Nickleback, and that guy who whines through "Bad Day," this is very refreshing. Finally! Something different for the radio.

Her voice is amazing.

Julie Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 02:06 AM EST

This song is HOT. The song may get a bit repetive, but the vocals are top-notch. The song is sassy and fun and oldschool. Radio needs more songs like this. Christina is a true talent.

dmac Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:52 AM EST

Beyonce has been classified as a Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano because of the strength and power of her singing voice. She is also capable of employing high and fast melismas and this technique is a unique feature to her sound. She has been hailed frequently by the media as one of the best contemporary pop singers. In Cove Magazine's countdown of the 100 Most Outstanding Pop Vocals of all time, she was placed at number #7 (just 1 place behind Whitney Houston) and given a mark of 48/50 for her vocal capabilities:

Voice type: Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano (possibly classified as a full or Wagnerian soprano)
Highest notes: D6 , E6, possible F6 or G6
Lowest notes: C3, E3
Vocal range: (approx) 3.2 octaves (C3-E6)

E6 - A live 'Whoooooh' after singing her hit "Work It Out"
D6 - She hits it in her song "Happy Face"
C6 - During a live performance of "Emotions", Kodak Theatre, 2002
C6 - The highest note in "Emotions" from Destiny's Child Survivor CD
E3 - "Dangerously In Love", Grammys, 2004

dmac Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:39 AM EST

Lol awww, Look what I started.... I really should stay off Blog sites, I bring the worste out of people on posts haha...

Beyonce Vs. Christina.. Uh oh.... NEVER!!!!! Haha **Runs in a corner and waits for the trouble I started to subside**

Ed Fri, Jun 2, 2006 at 12:12 AM EST

I think I've been censored by E.W; they call it spam blogging. I only state opinions which is what this board is about. Here I thought the Dixie Chicks were treated unfairly.

Beward, don't show any interest in posting or you'll get sensored too.

johnathan Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 11:32 PM EST

Man, I am SO TIRED of diva competition...but I just can't help myself. Christina has a better voice than Beyonce, but the way that "XTina" presents herself is classless, and betrays her talent. She seems to start beef with anyone she can, and it just gets annoying. So Beyonce has the upper hand in my opinion, but I'll take Mariah over either of them any day.

Ken Adams Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 10:59 PM EST

Beyonce Vs. Christina? Christina wins before anyone even opens their mouths. I will admit that Beyonce has had more luck on radio, but Christina's voice has something that radio can't do justice to. Her live take on At Last was classic.

Thad Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 09:37 PM EST

Love her!! not the song so much.

Tyler Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 09:29 PM EST

I agree with you Grand, but Beyonce does have class too. I'm not just that into her. I find her annoying.
(I'm so bored I keep going on here and checking this. Ha!)

Jonathan Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 08:58 PM EST

meh. thumbs down for me. way too excessive.

Tyler Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 08:46 PM EST

First of all DMAC, I didn't know the album sold more than Dangerously in Love, but thank you for that information.
Secondly, I never once said Beyonce couldn't sing.
Thirdly, I did watch the Grammys and Beyonce way over did that. I was not the only one to say/think that either.
All I said was that I'm not looking forward to her music and she can't sing as well as others.
I have every right to express my own opinion. Thank you.

dmac Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 08:40 PM EST

Tyler for the record, Unstripped sold more albums then Dangerously In Love, to say Beyonce cant sang, must mean you either have no idea what singing is, what good singing sounds like. Didnt you watch the '04 grammys? She sang Dangerously In Love, to a standing ovation and thunderous applause.

Tyler Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 08:26 PM EST

I can't wait for Christina's album. I'm sure this is NOT the best song on the album. I like it though. Christina has a voice and knows how to use it. I love my diva Christina.
As for competing with Beyonce. Yeah, yeah. Beyonce can't even sing HALF as good as Christina.. but Beyonce sells more. I'm frankly sick of Beyonce and not looking forward to her music. Seriously, they played the crap out of her first album. I liked it before that though. The album wasn't GREAT though. It should not have won 5 grammys. Anyways..

Chris Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 08:02 PM EST

I really like this song. It is so funny...some of you talk as if we are discussing a sonata or something! It is just fun pop music. Don't take yourselves so seriously, especially when discussing music that isn't meant to be intellectually deep!!

It is so nice to hear something that doesn't sound like everything else on the radio. Music, especially R & B, has gotten so repetative and boring lately. I look forward to workin' my groove thing to this song. Hot!

johnathan Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 07:45 PM EST

Not crazy about it. Ech. It's alright, but doen't it sound like a knock off of Prince? And her voice does sound kinda obnoxious. I'm not crazy about Mariah, but at least she shows some restraint once in a while.

djm Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 07:26 PM EST

I love the new Christina song - I hope it does well. As for Lina - I downloaded "Come To Mama" when it was the single of the week on iTunes - LOVE IT!!!

Diego Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 07:25 PM EST

I absolutely love this, great voice, great music, it's gonna be a HIT :D

Ann Thrope Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 07:06 PM EST

I loved it just for the fantastic beginning. It maybe drags a bit in the middle, though. But this one can definitely grow on you.

Fatima Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:43 PM EST

It's not very good. I found the midsection breakdown of "ain't no other aint aint no other other" to be incredibly annoying. I don't know, it just bugs me

But LINA! Oh my god it was weird to see that written here. i've been a big fan of her's since 2001's "Stranger On Earth" record and I always wonder why she doesn't catch on, not just in the mainstream, but the neo soul scene as well. Despite a switch to Hidden Beach records, she still didn't even get a review in EW. Boo!

Colby Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:28 PM EST

Wow! Record of the Year Grammy for Aguilera! Hot song!

shelly Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:26 PM EST

I don't like it. I actually find her voice kinda annoying, much like Mariah Scary's. It is not a real attention grabber. But radio will play it as it caters to R & B as well as pop...hmmmmm intentional? Yes!!!

dmac Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:22 PM EST

Its ok, She will most likely kill the song with a stupid eccentric video of some sort. But the song is unique, nothing like it out there.. She will also have to compete with Beyonce's new single "Deja Vu" which most likely will dominate the summer/fall radio stations... Should be a nice battle though.

C Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:20 PM EST

Great single! I love the sound, and only Xtina could take this to the airwaves and get away with it. Superior voice. I hardly ever buy whole albums anymore (thanks to iTunes), but I will definitely purchase this one.

JD Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:09 PM EST

To quote Randy Jackson,"America, we got a hot one right here!! Dude, that was da bomb"

Going back to find a cure for Yaminitis (Elliot Yamin Depravation!!)

EatACookie Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:06 PM EST

Yeah, I got a sneak peak at hearing this and it's not bad, not great but it's a little different that most of the pablum on radio.

Dean Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 06:00 PM EST

Hot! Wow, I never knew she had that in her. Don't like Pop at all, but this is HOT. Took me 2-3 listens, but this is so unique and there's nothing out there like it. Song of the summer, would be my guess. I think I'm actually gonna get this album.

Stylish Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 05:50 PM EST

I loved it! This song makes me realize who is truly the blonde pop-queen in this town! ;)

Ken Adams Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 05:31 PM EST

Definately loved it... This song should shake things up this summer. (not to mention it made me want shake things in my living room) Good job X-Tina.

Reese Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 05:24 PM EST

I totally love it!! Go ahead, X-tina. Not sure if I'll buy the whole album but I'll, at least, buy the single on iTunes.

Jillness Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 05:22 PM EST

I just heard it on the radio and I LOVE it! Very fun and FRESH. Not predictible like so much of the boring pop that is on the radio. Made me want to shake it!

brandonk Thu, Jun 1, 2006 at 05:16 PM EST

I like it! Anytime we can get some new music with a little big band tinge, I'm all over it.
